00:00Hi, my name is Sandrika Citizen. I'm a senior business entrepreneurship major from Houston,
00:10Texas, and I serve as the 2019-2020 Miss Norfolk State University. The HBCU experience is black
00:20excellence in its prime. It's coming to a university where there's true history because
00:26it connects you all together, all HBCUs across the country, and you find pride in it.
00:40I see homecoming and the community intersecting the day of the game. We have a parade for the
00:47community early that morning at 8 a.m., and it's just like a time where we all get together
00:51and really just celebrate how the university contributes to the community, and we just
00:55have a good time, and everybody's happy to see each other and happy to see what's been
00:59going on throughout the year.
01:09The favorite part about the football game for me is halftime. The Spartan Legion comes out
01:13on the field, and then we have Hot Ice, which is the best band and the best dancers in all
01:18of Virginia and across the country.
01:30Norfolk State has changed my life because I came here as a girl who kind of had an idea
01:37of what she wanted for her future. She just wanted greatness to, like, having a direction,
01:42having a family that isn't blood, that loves me so much and supports me so much, and I
01:46love them back because that's what my university stands for. We have the shield and that's integrity
01:52and honesty and civility and making sure that you're out here doing what you need to do to
01:56be a global citizen and make a difference in the world and in your community. I personally
02:00feel like, at this moment, black culture is the culture of today, and that's what we're
02:05here to do exemplify what it means to be educated and black. And me being in this position right
02:11now just continue to remind me that I made it here, and someone else can make it here too.
