UNCONTAINED Episode 01.

Part 1 of the UNCONTAINED mini-docuseries. A back-stage look at the AFROPUNK x TARGET UNCONTAINED Artists at AfroPunk Atlanta 2021!

It's been close to a month since we witnessed the return of AFROPUNK's live music festival in Atlanta. It had been over a year since AFROPUNK's community gathered in real life to celebrate music, fashion, art, entrepreneurship, and inspired cuisine of all sorts. The return of AFROPUNK sparked new energy and has been a catalyst for conversations within the black community. With the return of the festival, AFROPUNK brought back their longtime collaborators, Target, to create a platform dedicated to empowering leading women in the arts. Over the two-day period of the festival, fans gathered at the UNCONTAINED stage to enjoy music from artists such as Rico Nasty, Tems, Van Jess, Yung Baby Tate, and Doechii. Platforms such as the UNCONTAINED stage have played an important role in highlighting new talent to audiences who otherwise would have not had a chance to see them due to the lack of live festivals over the past year or so. An example of this is Tems, who had her debut festival performance in the US at AFROPUNK. Over the past year, since her feature on Wizkid’s “Essence”, Tems has been flying the Nigerian flag high, and with the recent signing to Since ’93/ RCA Records, the world has started to notice this shining star. We've seen her trajectory to superstardom and fans have been waiting to see her live and so, it was no surprise to see so much excitement around this incredible act. Artists like Doechii have spent the last 12 months growing their fanbase through online platforms s well as bagging features from artists such as TDE's Isaiah Rashad. Doechii's "Yucky Blucky Fruitcake" currently sits at over 24 million streams on Spotify and has two million views on YouTube, so a platform such as UNCONTAINED was a perfect place to celebrate her.

Another exciting act that fans couldn't wait to see was Yung Baby Tate, who has been putting out work. Following her electrifying performance at the AFROPUNK festival, she was criticized by some people when images of her were shared online. The body-shaming however was quickly slammed by the artist and her fans and quickly turned the hate around to a body positivity campaign. Yung Baby Tate even got support from Rihanna, who DM'd her with some words of positivity.

In case you missed the festival or would like to relive the moments at the UNCONTAINED stage powered by Target, you can catch the performance on www.planetafropunk.com where all the exclusive behind-the-scenes footage will be available. AFROPUNK and Target have put together exciting content which you can enjoy at the comfort of your own home and witness a celebration of incredible women who are leading the music scene right now!

00:00I
00:19Rebel you say gang rebel rebel
00:23It's into this. I don't know if you know this
00:25It's been a journey getting here
00:27Experience is what got us here. It's a lot of hustling a lot of resilience and not giving up
00:34We've had to face a lot of resistance just getting to this point
00:40Okay, y'all ready for our next performance?
00:45Okay, y'all ready for this Nigerian American R&B duo?
00:50Y'all ready for Vam Jack?
00:53Y'all ready for Vam Jack?
00:55Make some noise!
00:57I don't wanna play
01:00No hitting round in the beat house
01:03There are no secret beat
01:05Mine's a little bucket sugar
01:07Just love it
01:09Yeah
01:10This one should know
01:12We see ourselves in the audience so much
01:14I know how special it is to look on stage
01:16And like see people that look like us
01:18I don't know, it's like this mutual celebration
01:20And I think that's very unique to Apple
01:31The word uncontained
01:32I think it's kind of in the same world as being fearless
01:35Yeah
01:36And really just not letting yourself have bounds
01:40Yeah
01:41When you are in that space and allow that
01:43Allow yourself to be uncontained
01:45That's when the beauty happens
01:46That's when the magic happens
01:47Cause there was a time when we were made to feel like
01:50We shouldn't be happy to be Nigerian
01:53Cause there would be so many tauntings, comments
01:56Yeah
01:57You know, there's a way that people can
01:59You know, people, words can make you feel like
02:01Well maybe it is true
02:03Maybe I shouldn't, you know, like
02:05Be comfortable in my hair
02:07Maybe I shouldn't be comfortable, you know
02:09With who I truly am
02:11I feel like most of the Nigerian record will tell you
02:13Like this is not the path that we are encouraged to go on
02:17That's not
02:18I just wanna shout out Tams
02:19Because obviously you're an Nigerian sister
02:21You know, they said Afropunk so I had to switch it up
02:27I had to give it, give them something different, you know
02:40Being free means living in truth
02:43And if you're not free
02:45It means that somewhere, somehow
02:47You are living some kind of life
02:50And that's the story of everybody in this world
02:55And so being an artist or being free
02:57Or like learning to accept yourself
02:59Is learning to accept the truth
03:01Not just about yourself, about the world
03:03And learning to love that thing about you
03:07This song really means something to me
03:09It's very special
03:11So if you know it, let's go
03:20It's easy for me to think, oh there's something wrong with my voice
03:34Because nobody sounds like me
03:36It didn't really take too long for me to start liking
03:39Like for me to love my voice
03:41I have come to not just love, but love it to the point that I want to share it
03:48I said five in the morning
03:50I wake up said five by my hands
03:52It's where in my mind is a warning
03:54Pray to the one you're in line
03:56And most of my songs give me the opportunity to express the feelings I have about other people
04:00About other things
04:02About the things that are going on in my life
04:04Not necessarily me speaking to myself
04:06But me speaking to them
04:08With a strength and with an assurance in my mind
04:12That it's like a declaration
04:14Learning to love the truth
04:16Know the truth and love the truth
04:18And share the truth
04:20And that is what freedom is
04:22I think this is like Africa rising right now in this world
04:41After this shift, it's just so incredible
04:44And I'm just happy to be a part of that
04:52This much attention
04:54This much recognition
04:56It's not for me to just say
04:58Oh wow, look at me, I'm recognized
05:00It's for me to give back at every single point
05:03So when that music plays, I'm in it
05:05Until it stops
05:07Literally
05:22Alright
