For the first time in Bangladesh's history, an Islamist party has a chance to grab power. Often criticized for its views on women and a fraught political history, the Jamaat-e-Islami party is trying to rebrand as a moderate political force.

00:00Hundreds of thousands of Bangladeshis have been showing up in Jamaat's political rallies.
00:08The fiery leader Shafiq al-Rahman is promising an Islamic welfare state, a model that's
00:14a mix of religion and politics.
00:17And his views are resonating with many, including women.
00:24Jamaat-e-Islami is not merely a religious party, rather it is an institution and a centre
00:29of education.
00:31From our personal lives to family, social and state life, Jamaat-e-Islami promotes a practical
00:37Islamic way of life in every sphere.
00:39Through this approach, peace can be established in society, corruption can be eliminated and
00:44a justice-based social system can be built.
00:47Jamaat opposed Bangladesh's 1971 liberation war.
00:53Many of its leaders were hanged after they were prosecuted by the government of former
00:57Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
00:59The party was also banned in 2013 under Hasina's rule.
01:04And now, years later, the tables have turned.
01:09The ban has been lifted.
01:10Jamaat has allied with a student party whose leaders led the uprising that ousted Hasina.
01:17A political shift in favour of Jamaat, a party that has not fielded a single woman candidate,
01:25is making many progressive Bangladeshis deeply uncomfortable.
01:29Jamaat-e-Islami seeks to push them backward and deny them proper recognition.
01:43Historically, Bengali women have stood shoulder to shoulder with men during the language movement,
01:50mass uprisings and national struggles.
01:53However, when women demand their rights or seek equal participation and employment,
02:00Jamaat-e-Islami always tries to sideline these concerns.
02:05Jamaat leaders argue that they do not plan to implement a strict Sharia law
02:11and will allow women to work and be an active part of society.
