00:00No matter how many times I watch this movie, I'm content with the fact that I'm never going to figure it out.
00:06I don't think I'll ever figure it out.
00:08Jordan Peele is one of the greatest cinematic directors of our time.
00:13Obviously, Academy Award winning director, writer.
00:17It just doesn't get better than that.
00:19Hi, Naturally Curly World. It's G.
00:22And this is Watch and Go, the series where we review TV shows, movies, and fun things.
00:28Today, I'm going to review Us.
00:58Who is that?
01:05Run!
01:10What are you people?
01:27It's us.
01:28Let's get into Us.
01:31The first product that I want to tell you all about is my all-time favorite shampoo from Dove.
01:37This one is the Anti-Dandruff 2-in-1 Shampoo and Conditioner.
01:41I recommend it to everyone because it really does work wonders for your scalp.
01:46I'm not going to demonstrate that on camera.
01:48You know how to wash your hair.
01:50I'm going to show you essentially how I refresh these braids using four incredible products that you definitely need to try yourself.
01:59So, the first product that I'm going to use while I talk to you about the movie is from Righteous Roots.
02:06It's their hair oil.
02:08If you have not seen Us, there will be spoilers in this review.
02:13There will be spoilers in this review.
02:15Spoilers in this review.
02:18In this film, really, we're following Lupita's character.
02:23Her name is Adelaide Wilson.
02:24She seems very reserved at first.
02:28And then, as the movie starts to progress, as they go over to their summer cabin,
02:33you start to see that she is shifting in her character.
02:37She's showing signs of anxiety, like anxiousness.
02:41Okay, so that's done.
02:42The next step is actually going through each of these extensions and reshaping them.
02:47The moose that I'm using is from The Main Choice.
02:49There's so many things I liked about this film.
02:51So, the very first thing I liked was the pacing.
02:55I mentioned before that the anxiety that builds up through our lead character, Adelaide Wilson.
03:04You're with her throughout her entire journey.
03:07And that really has to do, in my opinion, with how the film was paced.
03:12It was real chill.
03:14Nothing really got out of hand until it needed to get out of hand.
03:18And I think the writing and the cinematography, the direction, it all plays into that pacing,
03:23which is why we were all so captivated by this film.
03:27I love the music.
03:28The music was phenomenal.
03:31Aside from the use of I Got Five on It by Luna's, the score itself was actually startlingly beautiful.
03:41I really, really enjoyed it.
03:42Much like the pacing of the film, there wasn't a lot of shock.
03:49There wasn't a lot of loud sounds until you absolutely needed them.
03:55Prime example is actually the intro.
03:57When we have the bunnies, which I'm not going to get into because that's a whole other rabbit hole.
04:03The person that is in charge of that score, his name is Michael Abels.
04:11And he is an African-American composer who also gave us the score for Get Out.
04:16The next thing that I like about the film, it's really the chemistry between all the characters.
04:24But the thing that I love the most about Adelaide and Red being the same exact person is that when they come into the same room together,
04:34when they're actually confronting each other, this to me calls into question for the audience member, the idea of identity.
04:44This is a challenge.
04:46How far would you go and what lengths would you go to to confront the true reality of yourself?
04:55And that's something that both of these characters were tangling with every time they were in a room together.
05:02I would say that they are more than just characters.
05:06They're us.
05:08And that to me is like one of the many cruxes of this film.
05:12It makes you think about your own identity.
05:15What would you do if you had to look yourself in the mirror and confront the things about yourself that were pretty much unseemly or things you don't like about yourself?
05:26Names are very important in this film.
05:29The name Adelaide in French and German actually means nobility.
05:33She is actually a representation of someone that has a lot of privilege in a country that she resides.
05:42When you think about the flip side of that, Red, she is the opposite of having nobility, of having privilege.
05:51And she has been fighting her way up to this high stature.
05:57One of the names that stuck out the most to me in the film is Gabe's doppelganger's name is Abraham.
06:07The name of Abraham is significant across many cultures and many religions.
06:11And to me in this film, Abraham essentially is the equivalent of a king in response to Red's queen.
06:20For me, Red symbolizes animus.
06:25And that is essentially the concept of our psyches having a masculine side of our female mind.
06:37So when I see her, I'm always wondering, like, why are you constantly protecting your son?
06:44So Red, if she is truly animus and she has this masculine side of her female mind, she's trying to preserve her lineage.
06:56And that would be through an heir.
06:58And the heir is her son.
07:00So even though that seems like a crazy, complex thought, that just kind of ran into my head.
07:06I'm done twisting these extensions and I'm going to walk you through how you can just finish them with a leave-in, spray leave-in.
07:16And something really cool that I don't know if many of you have seen yet.
07:20So I'll tell you about it when we get there.
07:22This is my favorite, my absolute favorite leave-in.
07:27It's from Tropic Owl Living.
07:29It's the Jamaican Black Castor Oil Leave-In Conditioner and Detangler.
07:34Oh, yeah.
07:34I constantly fall into this rabbit hole of thought when I think about the end of us.
07:42I think that what's being shown is that we are witnessing what it looks like for a world to go mad.
07:52And what it looks like when people have a break in their identity.
07:58When they lose sight of who they are and what they've been doing.
08:03So if you're missing like a huge chunk of who you are, it throws you for a tailspin.
08:10It throws you for a loop when you finally bring that reality back into your world.
08:16You have to reconcile those things.
08:19You have to figure out who you are.
08:21And I think that's what we might be witnessing at the end of the movie.
08:26I didn't realize that I needed a hair tonic.
08:29It's from Eden Body Works.
08:31And it's full, full of vitamins.
08:35And it's liquid.
08:37You just shake it up.
08:38You just spray it on.
08:41In the end, there's been much debate about Jason's smile.
08:46At the end of the movie, we see that Red has triumphed.
08:51And I think Jason looks at her and smiles at her because the tethered in him sees her.
09:00For the first time, he sees her.
09:03This mother figure that had been protecting her son.
09:07Protecting the heir to her throne this whole time.
09:11Finally recognizes her.
09:13And I think that's where the smile comes from.
09:16It's one of the most moving moments of the film.
09:20Absolutely.
09:22But it's also the one that I feel like really sparks the debate.
09:27It really sparks those questions within all of us.
09:31What does he know that we don't know?
09:33And I think that's truly amazing.
09:37Us deserves five out of five stars.
