00:00Hey everyone and welcome back to our channel. Today we're diving deep, I mean really deep,
00:09into the darkest, most mysterious parts of our planet to uncover the top 10 most bizarre
00:16and terrifying creatures lurking in the abyss. These are the real life monsters that seem to
00:24have swum straight out of a sci-fi movie. So grab your virtual submarine and let's begin our descent
00:33into the unknown. Coming in at number 10 is the master of deception, the anglerfish. Now you've
00:42probably seen this one in movies and let me tell you, the real thing is just as creepy. Living in
00:51the pitch black depths, this fish has a very clever trick up its sleeve, or rather on its head. It has
01:00a long, fleshy, rod-like growth called an esker that dangles right in front of its massive mouth.
01:09At the tip of this rod is a little ball filled with glowing bacteria, a built-in fishing lure.
01:16Unsuspecting prey, mesmerised by the hypnotic light in the endless darkness, swim in for a closer look
01:25and snap. The anglerfish's huge jaws close in an instant. It's a deadly and effective hunting strategy.
01:37What's even stranger is their mating ritual.

01:48as in, and your

05:29look like a melted mess on the surface in its natural habitat it's a beautifully
05:36adapted and surprisingly normal looking fish now for number six a fish that will
05:44truly blow your mind the Borelli fish this creature looks like it was designed
05:51by a surrealist painter it has a completely transparent fluid filled dome
05:58on its head yes you heard that right a clear head and inside that clear head you
06:06can see its eyes which are two large green barrel shaped orbs but here's the
06:13crazy part its eyes are usually pointed straight up allowing it to spot the
06:20silhouettes of prey swimming overhead in the faint light that penetrates the deep
06:26sea it can also rotate its eyes to look forward when it's about to eat the two
06:33small spots on the front of its face that look like eyes are actually its nostrils
06:40it s an incredible evolutionary adaptation that gives it a unique advantage in the
06:48twilight zone of the ocean slithering in at number five is the frilled shark this
06:55creature is often called a living fossil and for good reason it looks like a
07:02bizarre cross between a shark and an eel its long serpentine body can reach up to
07:09six feet in length and its mouth is lined with rows of terrifying three-pronged needle
07:16sharp teeth about three hundred of them in total its name comes from the six pairs of
07:24frilly gill slits that give it a prehistoric appearance the frilled shark is a formidable
07:32predator it's believed to hunt by bending its body and lunging forward like a snake swallowing
07:41its prey hole it mostly feeds on squid and its flexible jaws and expandable stomach allow it to
07:50consume prey more than half its own size seeing a frilled shark is like looking back in time to the age
07:59of dinosaurs floating gracefully into our number four spot is the dumbo octopus finally a creature that's
08:09more cute than creepy named after the famous disney elephant this octopus gets its nickname from the
08:19two large ear-like fins on the sides of its head which it flaps to propel itself through the water it looks
08:27like it's flying through the ocean living at extreme depths some have been found as deep as thirteen thousand
08:36feet making them the deepest living of all known octopuses unlike other octopuses they don't have an ink
08:45sack probably because in the complete darkness of their habitat a cloud of ink wouldn't be a very
08:54effective defense mechanism they hover over the seabed searching for worms snails and other small crustaceans
09:04which they swallow whole the dumbo octopus is a charming and gentle reminder that not everything in the deep
09:13is a monster at number three we encounter a creature with a dramatic name the vampire squid despite its name
09:23it's not a vampire and it's not technically a squid it's in a unique order all on its own
09:32it lives in the oxygen minimum zone a part of the ocean where very few other animals can survive
09:40its name comes from its dark velvety skin its reddish eyes and the webbing that connects its eight arms
09:50which looks like a cape when threatened it doesn't squirt ink instead it flips its webbed arms over its body
10:01turning itself inside out and exposing spiny projections called ciri in an even more spectacular defense it can
10:11release a cloud of bioluminescent mucus a sticky glowing goo that can confuse a predator for up to 10 minutes
10:20giving the vampire squid plenty of time to escape into the darkness
10:25our runner-up at number two is the black swallower this fish has an appetite that is frankly unbelievable
10:36while it's a relatively small fish itself usually less than 10 inches long its most remarkable feature is its
10:45ability to swallow prey much much larger than itself sometimes up to 10 times its own mass and twice its
10:54length how is this possible its stomach can stretch to an incredible degree like a balloon it grabs its
11:03prey with its sharp teeth and just keeps swallowing until the entire meal is inside sometimes its ambition
11:13gets the better of it these fish are often found dead at the surface because they va swallowed a fish so
11:22large that the decomposition process releases gases causing the swallower to float uncontrollably upwards
11:32it's a case of your eyes being way bigger than your well enormously expandable stomach
11:39and now the moment you've all been waiting for the number one most bizarre and terrifying deep sea creature
11:48is the undisputed titan of the abyss the colossal squid
12:09so
12:18so
12:20so
12:22These hooks leave telltale scars on their main predator, the sperm whale,
12:52the sperm whale, and the sperm whale.
