In celebration of Peacock’s new film, the two sat down with ESSENCE to talk about their undeniable chemistry, character preparation, and more.

00:00Even with the audition tape, I had to sing, you know, a modern song and also a gospel song,
00:05and I was so happy because people don't know I'm such a gospel fiend, and I love God,
00:11and one day I will do a gospel project, but I got to, like, kind of go into it slowly with this.
00:17My gosh, I always wanted a sister, and here you are!
00:20You're cousins, Jess.
00:21Cousins, sisters.
00:22It's the South. It doesn't even matter.
00:25So this is our church.
00:26I am starting to feel the spirit.
00:30Ladies, how you doing today?
00:32Fantastic.
00:34Amazing.
00:34So with you guys being sister cousins in the film, how did you guys build that on-screen chemistry,
00:40or was it just organic?
00:42It was really organic.
00:43Yeah, we didn't have to do much.
00:47We didn't have to do much. We met, and then that was kind of it.
00:50We were just like, okay, great. We're just going to do these things.
00:53We made up a handshake. We did the whole thing.
00:55The handshake in the film we made up the first week?
00:57Yes! We made it up and then put it in the movie.
00:59That was not, like, written in the movie.
01:01Uh-uh.
01:01And then, yeah, they saw us doing it, like, all the time.
01:04We'd be like, okay, yeah.
01:05And then they were like, we have to add that.
01:07So, yeah.
01:08So, Chloe, for you, with you being such an accomplished musician as well as actress,
01:12when you have these roles that combine the two passions,
01:16do you feel as though it's more difficult to execute, or do you like it more?
01:19It's easier for me to execute because it's my love of all of them combined.
01:25And even when I had to audition, right at the start of the pandemic, I sent in a self-tape,
01:30and I didn't know I got the role of Sam until, like, two years later.
01:33Right.
01:33And then production started.
01:35So, I'm a huge believer in timing is everything.
01:38But even with the audition tape, I had to sing, you know, a modern song and also a gospel song.
01:43And I was so happy because people don't know I'm such a gospel fiend, and I love God.
01:49And one day I will do a gospel project, but I got to, like, kind of go into it slowly with this.
01:56So, it was really fun.
01:57So, Angelica, you've had a very successful recent few years, so congratulations on that as well.
02:02Thank you. I appreciate that.
02:03How did you prepare for this role when you got it?
02:06You know, it was more so Jess talks really quickly.
02:13There's a cadence to the way that she speaks and how the dialogue flows.
02:19And there's a lot of jokes in just the dialogue.
02:22And so, I really wanted to make sure I hit them and didn't just, like, skip over them or that they didn't land.
02:26So, it was a lot of script analysis for me, actually.
02:29Like, really sitting with the script, going through all of the dialogue and all of the scenes.
02:34And really going through, like, okay, what is her, that's so actor-meaning, what is her motivation?
02:39But, like, genuinely in this moment, I'm like, what does she want?
02:43Why is she so ambitious about this when she's not great at it?
02:47You know what I mean?
02:47Why does she really want it?
02:48But she really believes that she's great at it.
02:50And I think that that's also a theme of the movie.
02:53Like, we just believe, you know, unapologetically.
02:56We have so much faith and so much belief in ourselves.
02:59And that can go such a long way.
03:01Chloe, how did you prepare for your role?
03:03How I prepared for my role?
03:05So, we began the music around two months before we started production.
03:09And it was really fun because I'd go into the studio with Harvey Mason, who I've known for years on a producer level.
03:15And, you know, now knowing he's the head of Grammys.
03:18So, it's pretty cool to have such heavyweights a part of this film, like, with Bill Packer and Tina Gordon and Universal.
03:24So, it was pretty cool.
03:26I got to learn a lot.
03:28I got to have so much fun with the music.
03:30And in terms of the acting side, I really pulled a lot from my own personal experiences.
03:35Like, even the moment where Sam was going to Ty's home after the party for the first time to try to convince him to, like, let her in somehow to his music world.
03:47And I remember Tina was like, seem more confident when you walk in.
03:51Seem more confident.
03:52And when we saw how that played, I said, Tina, can I suggest something?
03:55I was like, no, she was like, seem more scared.
03:57And I said, well, can I suggest something?
03:58I was like, inside the elevator, I want to seem scared.
04:01But a lot of times with this business, you have to fake it until you make it just to be let into the room.
04:06So, when I got to play it exactly how I felt in certain situations, she was like, that's it.
04:11That's what it's supposed to feel like.
04:13So, it was great actually taking from real-life music experiences where I still have a long way to go, but where it was earlier in my career and relating that to Sam and the drive and the work ethic and just the passion and wanting something so bad.
04:28That was really easy to bring to Sam.
04:31Chloe, Angelica, I appreciate you.
04:33Appreciate you.
04:33Thank you, and I look forward to seeing the film.
