00:00Thank you so much to Matthew and the entire State Farm team for the introduction.
00:05And we are excited to have an incredible conversation and to welcome the sexy baby boy from the Border Lone family.
00:13So, Charlie, who's joining us?
00:15Let's give some love for Kofi Cerebo.
00:18Woo! Come on out, Kofi. Cash flow Kofi.
00:21Hey.
00:22Hey.
00:23Let him get a picture, Kofi. Let him get a picture real quick.
00:26Hey, hey, hey.
00:29All right. All right.
00:33Come on and join us.
00:35You're welcome, everybody.
00:36I love it. Is it Kofi or is your name? Cash flow.
00:39Sit on down. Let's have a conversation.
00:42And we're so excited that you were willing to come and join this Path to Power conversation
00:46because, of course, people see you as this kind of sexy man they know on TV,
00:50but you're a real man dealing with real life, real finances, real glow up.
00:55And so one of the things I often ask women is if money was their man, what would that relationship be?
01:01But for Kofi, we'll flip that.
01:03Kofi, if you were in a relationship with money, what would that relationship be like?
01:08If money was your woman, would it be a sexy, sultry relationship?
01:12Would you be making out with your bank account or would you kind of be in a distant relationship?
01:17That's a good question.
01:18That's a great question.
01:19Yeah.
01:20I mean, I feel like it would be like a love-hate relationship.
01:23Oh.
01:24And you know what I mean.
01:26It's just one of those things.
01:27Tell us more.
01:28It's like, I feel like being black and young, like, you know, I always aspired to have money,
01:33but I also kind of like, there was an animosity with it.
01:36I kind of hated, you know, I hated the idea of it because there were so many problems I experienced
01:40based off of the notion of not having money.
01:43So, like, now I get money and, you know, there's a lack of respect, you know?
01:48So, it's like when you get something that you kind of respect but don't have a relationship with,
01:52it's like now you kind of have to build that respect.
01:55You have to build that trust.
01:57It's like I have this thing that I don't necessarily value because I've never had it before
02:01and it's caused so many problems in my life.
02:03Now I could actually use it to solve problems, but instead I low-key create more problems.
02:08And that's why they say more money, more problems.
02:10But I think it's more of an understanding thing and a communication thing if we are going to personify money.
02:16But I feel like we would have to speak to each other and talk about what, like, what, you know, like, what it really is.
02:25You know what I'm saying?
02:26Like, I feel like there's so much depth to, like, what money, you know, I guess equates to in our society.
02:31I've kind of related it to time and space.
02:34You know, it's like the more money you have, essentially the less you have to do,
02:39the less places you have to be, the less you have to put on.
02:42You know, I feel like we all kind of have to put on to get money to survive, essentially.
02:45So, you know, I just think there's a lot of depth and understanding to money.
02:50Y'all like that answer?
02:51You know what I'm saying?
02:52So how have your spending habits changed now that you've got money?
02:56A little bit.
02:57You know, you're famous.
02:58It's working.
02:59I'm still working on that.
03:00You know, it's like I splurge, but it's like I splurge on, like, creative things, you know.
03:03So it's like, I'm still, I love diamonds.
03:05I love, I love fancy shit.
03:07I love, you know, cars.
03:08I love all the cool stuff.
03:09But I also love, like, art.
03:11You know what I'm saying?
03:12Like, and that's honestly the most expensive stuff.
03:14The art?
03:15Production, you know, like when it comes to film and music and studio time and all of that.
03:20Like, that's, it adds up.
03:22I love it.
03:23I love that you're paying attention to it.
03:24That's what counts.
03:25You know, so many of our money habits come from our family.
03:29And I got to visit the homeland of your parents, Ghana, this year for the first time.
03:33It's beautiful.
03:34So talk about how growing up has shaped it.
03:36You talked about sort of that love-hate relationship with money.
03:38You're working on healing.
03:39How has growing up shaped your money conversations?
03:42And what are some of the habits you have now to help you have the wealth that you deserve?
03:47I just think, honestly, the awareness.
03:49You know, I feel like my parents always did their best to teach me how to spend money.
03:52But I think the goal is always to make more money, you know, at least, you know, right now.
03:59But I'm still learning, you know.
04:02I don't necessarily think I have bad habits.
04:04I just think it's about using your money to work for you, you know.
04:08A lot of times we just think money is as simple as making it and spending it.
04:11But there's so many tricks and tips and ways you can move things around here and put it here.
04:17It's like, I didn't know all of that, you know.
04:20A lot of us, we just spend cash, you know.
04:23Like, credit is a whole other beast, you know.
04:25So, it's like, just really learning to respect it, you know what I'm saying.
04:29And my parents, they're just so smart, you know what I'm saying.
04:31And they made so many mistakes, so they're able to really teach me from those mistakes
04:35and try to make sure I don't make the same mistakes.
04:37But you learn through failure.
04:39So, I've failed a lot. I've spent a lot of money.
04:41I spent all my money season one.
04:43Did you?
04:44All of it.
04:45But, you know, I went home.
04:47What'd you spend it on?
04:48I went back home, though. I went back home.
04:49I went back home to Ghana for the first time.
04:51I spent a lot of money on my short film.
04:53I made a short film called Jump and, you know, what the fuck is mental health.
04:57But, again, production, life, living, space, you know, just going places, decompressing.
05:02I love it. They thought you had all this money sitting in the bank.
05:05They're like, oh, he been spending that Oprah check.
05:08I ain't got Oprah money.
05:09So, you need to go over here.
05:10Kofi, you already have, you're working on your new habits.
05:13And for anyone else who's like, you've been there, you make a good money,
05:16and you kind of, you want to spoil yourself.
05:17But the good thing is, State Farm is here.
05:19They didn't come by themselves.
05:20They have some wonderful State Farm representatives.
05:23You can get a free 15-minute consultation.
05:25If you were the star of a show on Oprah Winfrey Network and you blew through some money,
05:29you can go over there and meet somebody.
05:34So, how do you manage your time and your money?
05:36Like, how do you, you obviously are a very busy guy.
05:39You are very in demand.
05:41How do you manage all that?
05:42That's a lot of adulting.
05:44I know, for real.
05:45That's a lot of adulting.
05:46Honestly, I just try and take my time.
05:48You know, like, I feel like it's very easy to be impulsive.
05:51And when you have money, it's like, what are you doing?
05:53You could do anything.
05:54You know, and again, I can't do Oprah anything.
05:56But what are you doing?
05:57You could do anything, you know?
05:58Right.
05:59So, it's like, sometimes it's really just thinking about what you're doing.
06:02You know, sleeping on it.
06:03And, you know, praying on it.
06:05And budgeting and structuring and having a vision.
06:07Like, when I'm real sure about what I'm trying to create and what I'm trying to do
06:12for a certain amount of time, say, for the next three months, for the next six months.
06:15Right now, my main thing is property.
06:17Like, I feel, again, money equates to time and space.
06:20I feel literal space, tangible space is real estate.
06:23That's why everybody gets bread and starts buying property.
06:25I just want to have something that I could have forever.
06:28I love it.
06:29And space is vast because you could always change.
06:32You could always rebuild.
06:33If this building burns down right now, the people still own the space.
06:36You could still rebuild.
06:37You could build something bigger and crazier.
06:39Right.
06:40But that's where I'm trying to put my money at because I feel like it's not going to go anywhere.
06:45It just kind of stays there.
06:46So, again, there's just so much learning.
06:48But, like, I'm trying to really learn where to put it.
06:50That way I don't feel bad about getting it.
06:52Because, again, some of us get it and then we get bored because we don't know what to do with it.
06:56And the money ends up becoming a burden.
06:58So, it's like, how can I still, you know, let this be the blessing it is but still not let it become, you know, primary?
07:04Because at the end of the day, it is just money.
07:06It's hard to say that when you struggle because of something that's just paper.
07:09But it's just money.
07:10There's so much more to life.
07:12So, it's like, what is money if you can't be happy?
07:14You can't actually enjoy it.
07:15You can't wake up and smile and then spend that bread.
07:18Spending it is not going to make you happier.
07:20You know what I'm saying?
07:21Look how grounded he is, y'all.
07:23He is.
07:24And I have to give you, like, so much support.
07:26Give it up for him.
07:27Because, I mean, you're splurging.
07:28That's real.
07:29I love it.
07:30Good smart man alert.
07:31They want to clap for you and celebrate you.
07:33Because, I mean, some people splurge on a bag and some people splurge on creating an incredible film to open up conversations on mental health.
07:40So, we salute you for that type of decision.
07:43And one thing that you illustrate through your character, Ralph Angel, through you.
07:48Ralph Lauren.
07:50Ralph Angel, but we see the reality of, like, everybody kind of wants a second chance.
07:55But you're talking about, like, an opportunity to learn from their mistakes and to be able to start over.
07:59So, you were very honest around sort of having to learn how to be financially responsible.
08:04So, how did you sort of recover from, like, you know what, maybe I don't want to blow my money and be more responsible.
08:09How did you really create a plan to make sure that you're investing wisely?
08:14That's a good question once again.
08:17Well, first of all, I knew I had season two.
08:21So, I was like a little, you know, I was like, all right, I get a second chance to do this again for real.
08:26And, again, I just took my time.
08:30Like, the first year, I kind of just went with it.
08:32I was just in it.
08:33I didn't really think about my habits.
08:34I didn't think about the money.
08:35I just was living, spending, hotels, you know what I'm saying, flights.
08:39The whole nine.
08:40And it was mine.
08:41They're imagining themselves in that hotel room.
08:43Who was like, oh, I was in the room, too.
08:45Don't do that.
08:46Um.
08:47Um.
08:48Threw me y'all.
08:51Um.
08:52So, anyway, I called my.
08:54You were talking about how you were spending.
08:56No hotels.
08:57Not hotels.
08:58Year two was like my year of nothing.
09:00Like, I said, no thing is more important than my space.
09:03Space, for me, stands for stay present and constantly enriched.
09:06Wait, wait.
09:07Say that again.
09:08Break that again.
09:09Because it's like, what do you do?
09:10What do you do with space?
09:11It's like, you can't really do nothing.
09:12You could just really be there.
09:13But, like, all we want to do is we want to be on our phone.
09:16We want to do something.
09:17We get agile.
09:18We like, I got it.
09:19Like, nobody just wants to be somewhere, you know?
09:20And I think that has a lot to do with, you know, what's going on, you know, in our
09:22mental and in the world.
09:23There's just a lot of, like, anxiety just in the air.
09:24So, I'm really learning that even with all the bread.
09:26Okay, cool.
09:27And I think that has a lot to do with, you know, what's going on, you know, in our mental
09:32and in the world.
09:33There's just a lot of, like, anxiety just in the air.
09:35So, I'm really learning that even with all the bread.
09:38Okay, cool.
09:39I'm in the most beautiful hotel.
09:41What is it if I'm sitting here on Instagram looking at all the other beautiful hotels?
09:45You know what I'm saying?
09:46Like, why not be there?
09:47And then what does being there actually look like?
09:49Like, what does that actually feel like?
09:51You got to fill your space.
09:52Don't fill your space.
09:53You know what I'm saying?
09:54Like, don't fill it with things, but fill it.
09:56But he's giving you...
09:57Are y'all getting these gems he's given?
09:58I'm trying to drop these gems real quick.
09:59You got to say that one more time, Kofi.
10:01You got to fill your space.
10:02You got to fill your space.
10:03I said fill your space, don't fill your space.
10:04F-E-E-L.
10:05Fill your space.
10:06Word.
10:07Not F-I-L-L.
10:08Word.
10:09Fill your space.
10:10That's good, Kofi.
10:11Look at you.
10:12Yeah.
10:13All right.
10:14All right.
10:15You have a lot of passion projects.
10:16Like, WTF is mental health.
10:17The short film Jump.
10:18Is it Jump?
10:19Coming out soon.
10:20Do you...
10:21Okay, you have to set a goal and you have to get your money right to plan for these projects.
10:24Because that's, like, you're working independently.
10:25You're doing your thing.
10:26Yeah, I'm working on that.
10:27I'm working on that.
10:28It's a challenge?
10:29I wouldn't say it's a challenge, but, again, like, going into it, Jump is still, like,
10:33it was born from that first season, you know?
10:35Right.
10:36So, Jump is a baby of, like, that just, I'm going to do it.
10:38I want to make this my first...
10:39Now that that's done and I made it, now there's definitely got to be a little more structure.
10:43Just because there's so much I want to do, I just can't be out here hurt like that.
10:47Like, I can't be breaking all that bread with no return.
10:50Once at a time.
10:51But I wanted to be able to make a project with...
10:53It wasn't for nothing.
10:54You know what I'm saying?
10:55Like, it wasn't about money.
10:56It wasn't about accolades.
10:57It wasn't a...
10:58I wanted it to feel as organic as it could feel with the fact that I still spent a lot of money on it.
11:03Absolutely.
11:04You know, so that's not necessarily going to be my approach every time.
11:08But, you know, I'm working with people.
11:10I'm working with, they say, creativity and commerce.
11:12I'm, like, 80% creativity and 20% commerce.
11:16So, I'm trying to, like, balance it out, you know what I'm saying?
11:18And speaking of balance, you know, so you're making it, you're growing, you're learning,
11:22and you obviously need a partner.
11:24Ladies, I know you're going to want to know this, who can as well.
11:27How do you feel about dating a woman who makes bad financial decisions, bad credit, things like that?
11:31Deal breaker?
11:32That's not how... I'm not going to say it's a deal breaker,
11:34but I'm going to definitely try and put her on just because it's, like, that's just not...
11:37You know what I'm saying?
11:38Right. You can't grow together.
11:39Again, you got to own your space.
11:40Like, all you have is, like, you know, if your bread's not right, you're going to be stressed.
11:45You're not going to be acting right.
11:46You can't take vacations.
11:47You can't take vacations, vacations, everything.
11:49Where do you want to take the ladies of Essence on vacation, Kofi?
11:52Ooh, electrical.
11:53You said where I want to take them?
11:54They want to know where you want to take them.
11:55This is the vacation. We here right now, right?
11:57We here, that's right.
11:58We in New Orleans.
11:59They saw you on Girls Trip.
12:00It's a vacation, right?
12:01They're trying to bring their Girls Trip.
12:02We're trying to bring their Girls Trip fantasy to life with Kofi.
12:05I love it.
12:06Well, thank you so much.
12:08We appreciate you and the conversation.
12:09You all can go to letstarttoday.com to get more tips on how to get your money right,
12:13like Kofi here, you know, because he said, you know, it's a negotiation.
12:16Get your money right.
12:17That's right.
12:18He wants your money right, lady.
12:20That's right.
12:21And, of course, the State Farm team is here, so if you want to meet with a consultant,
12:24you can meet with them here at Essence Festival.
12:27So please give some Essence Festival love.
12:29Thank you so much, Kofi, for joining us.
12:30And we're going to be at the fan zone.
12:32We're doing a little meet and greet, so if you all try and kick it, chop it up real quick.
12:36We're going to be over there somewhere.
12:37I don't know where, but...
12:38Y'all heard that.
12:39You can go meet with Kofi with Kofi right now.
12:40Don't all run at once, but do all run at once.
12:42Because that line is going to be long.
12:43And be sure to make sure you take care of your finances so that you can fill your space,
12:47not just fill your space.
12:48All right.
12:49Thank you all so much.
12:50Y'all funny.
12:57Bye.
12:58Bye.
