Watch as Oprah Winfrey kicks off the 9th Annual ESSENCE Black Women In Hollywood
Transcript
00:00So I first stood up here three years ago in awe. I was humbled to be an honoree, but what I deeply
00:08felt is what I know everybody feels when you are in this room together. It is the magic of our
00:14sisterhood. And it is the, it really is a magical, it's like fellowship. We know what that is. It is
00:23the warm and welcoming love of all the brilliant women that we are surrounded by today. And that
00:29day that I was here three years ago, that was the day that Gabrielle Union broke us all
00:35open. Remember that? With her truth about what it means to be a black woman in Hollywood and
00:41talk about fierce and fearless, which is the award she received. Her bold words, like people
00:46were like squirming in the seats and they're like, really? She's saying that? Yep. Yeah.
00:52It helped start the conversation, a conversation that opened the doors for us to create
00:59more inclusion, more connection, and more opportunities with and for each other. So last year I stood
01:08here and honored my wisdom teacher, Dr. Maya Angelou. She was my greatest teacher, my wisdom source.
01:16And though she is no longer with us in body, she remains with all of us in spirit. And what I know
01:26for sure is that we all represent what's possible when we come together and realize each of us, you and you and you and you are each other's wisdom source. We are the wisdom source for each other. And it's our job to recognize that, that God is being reflected to us all the time.
01:56through the wisdom of each of us. And as my friend and prolific storyteller, Ava DuRenay, who's not here today because she's shooting a new series for OWN. She says that when black women are together, a sacred space can be conjured. So I say, let the conjuring begin.
