Transcript
00:00When you come back home, what's the first thing you have to do?
00:06Return all my grandma's phone calls.
00:09So she calls me like seven times a day.
00:13Especially while you're gone?
00:15Yeah, when I be gone, sometimes I don't get the answer.
00:17So she got GPS on me though.
00:20The way my life is set up is I kind of got like an ankle bracelet on
00:23so she know what city I'm in.
00:25As soon as I get off the plane, she know I'm in New Orleans
00:28and I got to report to her.
00:30Now, does she cook something special for you when you come home?
00:33Yes.
00:34Sea leg gumbo.
00:36I go right out there to the east where she live at.
00:38Make sure, you know, look at the flick of the wrist.
00:42That's the real flick of the wrist.
00:44That's the real flick of the wrist.
00:45So you got to get your gumbo.
00:46Gumbo.
00:47I can't drink carbonated beverages.
00:49So like cold drinks, you know, Coke, Sprite, Dr. Pepper,
00:53I can't do that because she knows that refrigerator is going to be
00:56stocked with Gatorade, things I can drink, sweet tea, chocolate milk,
01:01all the stuff.
01:02I see you got your sweet tea right here.
01:03Sweet tea, well, I had it.
01:04Mm-hmm.
01:05Mm-hmm.
01:06Mm-hmm.
01:07What's one thing that you have to have at you when you go on tour?
01:10Um, my laptop.
01:13Mm-hmm.
01:14Laptop, working at all times.
01:16Okay.
01:17Okay.
01:18So when I'm on tour, whenever I'm not doing the show, think about it,
01:22the show is only like an hour or two, you know, but you're out of
01:25town for two or three days.
01:26Right.
01:27For the show.
01:28So the rest of that time I'm working on new music.
01:29Mm-hmm.
01:30I'm listening to stuff, you know.
01:31I'm a very business-minded artist.
01:32That's good.
01:33That's smart.
01:34So I'm handling a lot of business from the road.
01:35Mm-hmm.
01:36In touch with Fatima, you know what I mean?
01:37We coordinate.
01:38Okay.
01:39So it's a business, man.
01:40This ain't no hobby.
01:41This ain't no hobby.
01:42For real.
01:43You ain't new to this.
01:44You true to this.
01:45So your platform is Be Real, Be Righteous, Be Relevant.
01:49Yes.
01:50You seem to have, um, I don't know the right word to choose,
01:53some sort of principles, like limitations as to what you would
01:55or would not do outside of David Augustine, so to speak.
01:58That's true, that's true.
01:59Let's talk about that.
02:00So I got in this game and there's certain things that me as a man,
02:04um, I don't feel like should be glorified, you know what I mean?
02:07So as an artist, I'm not gonna glorify it.
02:09So a lot of people don't know this, but I don't curse in my music,
02:12you know what I'm saying?
02:13I don't just talk about stuff that I don't do.
02:16Like a lot of my favorite rappers growing up were rapping about a bunch of lies.
02:20A lot of stuff they really don't do.
02:22Right, right.
02:23Like they wasn't really killing all them people.
02:24They wasn't really selling all that dope.
02:25Right, right.
02:26You know?
02:27But you listen to it.
02:28They don't own those yachts.
02:29They don't own those yachts.
02:30They lease those cars too.
02:31Sometimes.
02:32The day of the video shoot.
02:33You know what I mean?
02:34Yeah.
02:35That being said, me as an artist, I don't curse in my music.
02:39I don't, I don't, in real life, I don't drink and I don't smoke, right?
02:42So I don't cast judgment on people, but like this is a sweet tea.
02:46Right.
02:47For the viewers at home, it's a sweet tea, you heard me?
02:50And it's just things of that nature.
02:52I don't, um, I don't try to hide the fact that I'm a very spiritual man.
02:57Growing up in New Orleans, you know what I mean?
02:59Definitely, um, spirituality is all around us.
03:02Right.
03:03It's ingrained in us.
03:04So I'm a man of God and I proudly put that out there for people to understand.
03:07That's something wonderful, something great.
03:10And you hear it in my music, you see it in my lifestyle.
03:13A lot of artists who I meet, I'm cool with these people at this point.
03:16I'll meet them and in real life, they're the coolest people ever.
03:21But as soon as it's time, we could be having the most intelligent convo.
03:24As soon as it's time to go record in the booth, they transform into this super thug, you know?
03:29Like dogs.
03:30We were just at the library.
03:31Yeah, you know what I mean?
03:39So like, I'm the underdog in this music industry.
03:41I'm David, I feel like the industry is Goliath, you know?
03:44And it's a bunch of people who want to see me compromise, who want to see me sell out.
03:48But the only thing I'm going to sell out is concerts and shows.
03:51I heard that because your grandmother would not like it if you sold out.
03:53Believe that.
03:54Grandma, my mom, throw them threes up.
03:56You hear what I mean?
03:57Yeah.
