00:00Hey, I'm Dr. Rachel Ross from the Dr. Rachel Institute, and I'm so excited to be here at
00:10Essence Fest, and I'm going to be bringing you some information about sexual wellness. Okay,
00:16so let's just get right into it. So our first question comes from Michelle Johnson out of
00:21Denver, Colorado. Her question reads, how do women prepare for sex during menopause? Love it. Great
00:28question. Well, the first thing to think about when you're going through menopause is, first of all,
00:33don't fear it. Just embrace it. But the other piece is to know that when you're going through menopause,
00:39the lining of your vagina is going to kind of what we call atrophy or thin out. So what you want to do
00:45is make sure you have a really great lube close by that you use, that you've tried, that you've
00:51tested, and you know it's not going to irritate you even more. The second piece to that is to know that
00:56aging is 100% natural, and I say it all the time. Ladies, if you're having hot flashes, mood swings,
01:04vaginal dryness, and it's impairing your life, talk to your doctor about bioidentical hormones.
01:10We know for a fact now that adding a little estrogen into our lives as we go on, kind of
01:15taking us back to our 30s when we're in our 50s, actually has major health benefits. Okay, great
01:21question. The other question comes from Clara Andrews out of 96 South Carolina. That is the town,
01:29all right? What precautions should you take to protect yourself during COVID-19? Very great. So
01:36having sex in COVID-19, I want you to take the same precautions we took in 2019, now that COVID-19 is
01:44here, right? What are those precautions? One, we're using condoms. We're getting people tested for STDs and
01:50STIs and HIV and all that good stuff before we even consider not using condom, but taking it one step
01:57further, making sure that the people that we let down here and up here and all that actually deserve
02:02to be there. There's nothing more damaging to your psyche, to your ongoing progress, as it is to
02:08actually, you know, orgasm with somebody who needs you no earthly good, right? And believe me, there's
02:13some science in that. Google it. Okay. So the other piece about COVID-19 is, you know, I'm excited
02:20because you actually get a chance to slow down and get to know somebody a little bit before you decide
02:25to have sex because you're worried. Does this person have COVID? Do they have HIV? You know, we've got all
02:29these worries. So now we're slowing it down. We're waiting to see if they quarantine and come out of it
02:34without COVID. And then you can actually meet them and consider whether or not they're worthy of your time
02:39to have sex with in the first place. Yay. All right. So the other question, this is my last
02:44question. Wonderful question comes from Alana out of Nashville. The quarantine wiped my sex drive
02:51completely. How can I get my groove back? Love this question. Well, the first part to getting your
02:58groove back is understanding that like sex eventually, after you've been with someone for long enough, it
03:04actually is like the gym, right? We may not really want to go, but we know that when we get there,
03:10we're going to enjoy it. Right? So what you can kind of do to wake that area back up is so we've
03:16been stressed. We've been sitting there. Masturbate. Get a really nice vibrator, some great lubricant.
03:22Turn on your favorite movie. Read your favorite sex book. You know, some erotica, some zane,
03:27and go ahead and put the vibrator on there. Think sexual thoughts and really start getting your
03:33clitoris and your vagina back thinking about sex before you go back to having sex. And you would
03:39be surprised. Studies show that the more we play with it down there, the more we actually feel like
03:45doing it down there. All right. So I'm Dr. Rachel. Follow me at Dr. Rachel, D-R-R-A-C-H-A-E-L. And for
03:51those of you who want to be sexologists, head over to the Dr. Rachel Institute because we've got a
03:56program to train you to do just that. See you later, Essence.
