Since its reopening on Feb 2 on a limited basis for people on foot and war-wounded patients, the Rafah crossing has seen the flow of a trickle of Palestinians.

Gazans and NGOs estimate that Israeli forces only allowed 50 to 100 people to go through the Gaza-Egypt border on Feb 2 saying that strict Israeli security checks had slowed the process.

00:00How are you?
00:03All right, just as a reminder, it dates back to May of 2024.
00:10And over the weekend, the UN system...
00:18We welcome the reopening of the Rafah crossing.
00:24As we have said before, civilians must be allowed to leave and return voluntarily and safely.
00:29As international law requires.
00:32Ultimately, central humanitarian supplies must enter in sufficient quantities and with fewer restrictions through Rafah and all other crossings.
00:43Also today, WHO supported medical evacuations efforts from Gaza.
00:48The reopening of the crossing allowed some patients and companions to exit directly into Egypt.
00:54While others transited through the Israeli-controlled Karim Shalom, Karim Abu Salim crossing.
01:00Today, Mitzah San Fronter had been banned completely from Gaza and the West Bank.
01:09Do you have any reaction to that?
01:11When I had not seen that report, obviously, I think the Secretary General expressed his concern about 10 days ago at the push by the Israeli authorities to ban a number of international NGOs.
01:24Organizations like MSF and others are critical to the UN's humanitarian operation.
01:32We work with them hand in hand, and it is difficult to imagine us being able to do all the work we need to do without organizations like them.
01:40What we want to see is Palestinians being allowed to go into Gaza as they wish, Palestinians being able to leave Gaza as they wish,
01:50and for both humanitarian and commercial cargo to go in through Rafah.
01:56Just for clarification, does the Secretary General think 50 to 150 out of 20,000 is a low number each day?
02:03Of course. I mean, it's a low number by any indication.
02:07This is the first day, right?
02:09So let's see how things work out.
