00:00...concerns at home to weather warnings.
00:02NBC6's Brenna Nesvral is live for us with everything you need to know to deal with this very chilly change.
00:08And she's sporting the right look, especially if you're heading out the door.
00:14You would think I'm not in Miami right now, right?
00:16I'm in Miami Beach, yet dressed for the north right now.
00:20That's how cold it is.
00:21In fact, Sjernay, if you joined us at 7 o'clock this morning, I checked my phone.
00:26The feels like temperature here was 20 degrees.
00:28Now it is warmed up a little bit, 24, right?
00:30Not too bad.
00:31Maybe not for a lot of people, but for me, this is actually freezing.
00:35But take a look here at Miami Beach behind me.
00:36We are seeing more people out this morning versus how we are looking at 7 o'clock this morning, 7.30 even.
00:43We're seeing more people walking around, some even braving the cold and jogging.
00:48I think that's a little crazy, but, you know, people enjoy it.
00:52Look at this gentleman right now.
00:53He's not even wearing a jacket.
00:54He might not even be from here.
00:56But even looking at the restaurants down Ocean Drive, we are starting to see people eating outside, enjoying the cold.
01:01In fact, I just speak to one gentleman earlier who told me this doesn't come around often, so why not be out here and enjoy it?
01:08Look up north.
01:08It's snowing.
01:09Here, it's beautiful weather.
01:14South Florida is bracing for the cold.
01:17It's cold, though.
01:18Yeah, right.
01:19Now it's kind of windy.
01:20Temperatures are dipping into the 30s, the coldest we've seen in more than 15 years.
01:25Y'all Miami residents, I know they're about to lose their mind.
01:27What y'all going to do in 30 degrees?
01:29Shelters across South Florida are preparing to help those most at risk.
01:33Camilla's house expects to serve over 1,300 meals this weekend and will expand the number of available beds from 156 to 240 to give people a warm place to sleep.
01:45Meantime, a long ocean drive, lots of empty tables, outdoor heaters running, and people bundled up.
01:52But there's always a bright side, especially for visitors.
01:55There's no snow here, so I'm happy with that.
01:59And while some may be brushing it off, the cold can be tough for our furry friends.
02:03This weekend, it's going to be unseasonably cold.
02:06We can make a little chilly for our pets, especially ones that are smaller or have shorter coats.
02:13So take some precautions, bring them inside.
02:16Or give them a little extra layer.
02:18And when it comes to warming your home, fire departments across South Florida recommend using central heating if possible.
02:25And if it's the first time you've turned it on in the season, don't be alarmed.
02:30You're going to smell a burning smell, and that's the dust that's burning.
02:36If you're using a space heater, extra caution is key.
02:40Nationwide, about one in six house fires during the wintertime are caused by a space heater.
02:45But a few simple steps can make all the difference.
02:48So make sure to plug space heaters directly into the wall.
02:51Do not use an extension cord, and always turn space heaters off and unplug them before you leave your home or go to bed.
02:58And lastly...
03:00Ensure that it's far enough away, at least three feet, from any furnishings, curtains, so that way they don't catch fire.
03:05Fire officials stress making sure you have working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms,
03:10and do not bring in any barbecues or use your oven as a heat source.
03:14If you do, in doubt, think that something is going wrong, call 911.
03:18We're always here to respond.
03:21And what's your name?
03:22Mr. Blue.
03:22Mr. Blue?
03:23In Miami, my name is Mr. Blue.
03:25Hey, guys.
03:26So we're here with Tanya and Mr. Blue, some joggers here from Germany.
03:29I just stopped them on their run, because Mr. Blue, you were just telling me this isn't that bad?
03:34No, that's our regular temperature.
03:37Temperature.
03:38It's cold now.
03:38It's cold in Germany, but this is cold for Miami.
03:41And you said you come to Miami every year.
03:42You come for the Super Bowl, Super Bowl weekend, even though it's not here.
03:46And this is abnormal for Miami, though.
03:49Nothing se compara con Miami.
03:51So this is Miami.
03:53This is Miami.
03:54Cold, warm.
03:55We take it like it comes.
03:56You know.
03:57And are you enjoying this cold weather?
03:59Not really.
04:01We have a long flight because of the summer, of the sun, and now it's windy and cold, so it's like home.
04:08Yeah, and just like Germany, I just want to quickly show you the difference in outfits, because Tanya here, she's dressed for the cold.
04:13She's got her scarf, her jacket on, and Mr. Blue, you're in shorts.
04:17You're enjoying it.
04:19You said this is normal for Germany.
04:21Maybe not for us here, but we'll enjoy.
04:23We love to do U.S., so have a great time, and thank you for all.
04:27Thank you, guys.
04:28Enjoy.
04:30Bye-bye.
04:30So you see, we're seeing different people here, from visitors here enjoying the cold.
04:34Some residents might not be, me included.
04:37We bundled up in bed later this afternoon.
04:39But this is what we're seeing.
04:41So if you're going to step outside this weekend, today, tomorrow, just protect yourself, check in on your loved ones, and, of course, layer up.
04:48Shrine, I'll toss it back to you.
