00:00I'm so into you, I can barely breathe
00:05Welcome to Ms. Mojo.
00:07And today, in celebration of our 10th anniversary,
00:10we're counting down our picks for trends and songs from 2016 that leave us feeling totally nostalgic.
00:16I'm not overreacting. I'm doing what any reasonable person would do in this situation.
00:22I'm nominating.
00:24Number 5. Trends. Reboots.
00:28Oh, we have fun.
00:30Woo!
00:31If there's something strange in the neighborhood,
00:34who you gonna call?
00:36Ghostbusters!
00:37From television series to feature films,
00:392016 was smack dab in the middle of the decade of reboots.
00:43Whether it be Ghostbusters or Gilmore Girls A Year in the Life,
00:47studios, networks and streaming services produced a plethora of sequels,
00:52spinoffs and revamps of our most treasured pieces of media.
00:55Wow, winded.
00:56Haven't done that for a while.
00:57Oh, good.
01:00I've missed you, kid.
01:02I've missed you too.
01:03How long's it been?
01:05Feels like years.
01:06During this time, nostalgia was off the charts,
01:09reuniting us with beloved characters, stories and settings.
01:13Sure, not every reboot captured the magic of its original form,
01:16but it was always fun to play catch up with some old friends.
01:20It's good for you to get out of that little house every once in a while.
01:23It certainly was good for you.
01:25I'm always happy to see you.
01:28And I'm always happy to find a reason.
01:31Number 5. Songs.
01:33Rihanna featuring Drake.
01:35It was the anthem of the year.
01:37At the beginning of 2016, Rihanna blessed us with her eighth album, Auntie.
01:42The first single, Work, dominated the charts upon its release.
01:52Featuring Hotline Bling rapper Drake, the song is a fusion of dancehall and reggae.
01:57In fact, it has been credited with helping bring dancehall to the masses.
02:00The lyrics incorporate the use of patios, which is described as, quote,
02:10a West African-influenced Creole language spoken in the Jamaican diaspora.
02:15From radio airwaves to nightclubs, work had everyone out on the dance floor.
02:19Number 4. Trend. The Mannequin Challenge.
02:31It's the internet craze that is frozen in time.
02:34In the fall of 2016, the Mannequin Challenge took over the internet.
02:38What in the world was I thinking?
02:41New day, new money to be made.
02:44To partake in the challenge, players had to remain still in a tableau,
02:48while a camera moved around them as Black Beatles by the duo Ray Schrimmer played.
02:52The students of Florida's Edward H. White High School are often credited with starting the trend.
02:57We just started doing crazy poses and recording it,
03:00and then that day we posted it on every social media site that we had.
03:04After their video gained millions and millions of views,
03:07everyone jumped on the bandwagon.
03:10Even the NBA got former First Lady Michelle Obama to participate.
03:25Number 4. Songs. Closer. The Chainsmokers featuring Halsey.
03:30In 2016, you could not escape this song.
03:33Closer by the Chainsmokers featuring Halsey grabbed a hold of the Billboard Hot 100 and did not let go for a whopping 12 weeks.
03:47Blending the genres of pop and electronic music together, this earworm is about as catchy as they come.
03:52A song about heartbreak and longing, listeners clung to the relatable lyrics.
04:05Even if you are not a fan of it, everyone who was listening to the radio a decade ago definitely knows this number like the back of their hand.
04:11Number 3. Trends. Hamilton.
04:23Even though it arrived on Broadway in 2015, 2016 was truly the year of Hamilton.
04:44Blazing a trail in the greatest city in the world, New York, this Lin-Manuel Miranda musical was passionately smashing every expectation.
04:52Every action's an act of creation.
04:54I'm laughing in the face of casualties of sorrow.
04:56For the first time I'm thinking past tomorrow.
04:59And I'm not going to win my shot.
05:02I'm not going to win my shot.
05:04Winning a Grammy, multiple Tonys, and a Pulitzer all in one year showed the world that Hamilton was not only a great piece of theater, it was a phenomenon.
05:14A decade later, this revolutionary show still burns bright on Broadway, proving to be just as young, scrappy and hungry as it was in 2016.
05:23We won! We won! We won! We won! We won! We won! We won! The world turned upside down!
05:33Number 3. Songs. Cheap Thrills. Sia featuring Sean Paul.
05:55Rolling Stone called this song, quote, the bouncy party anthem, and we could not agree more.
06:00From her seventh album, This Is Acting, Sia's single, Cheap Thrills, was a radio darling.
06:06Since its release in the mid-2010s, it has become a staple on every party playlist.
06:21The wildly successful tune earned Sia her first number one single on the Billboard Hot 100 charts that year.
06:27Featuring a remix from Sean Paul, this poppy tune encouraged all to hit the dance floor, and maybe even, eventually, swing from the chandelier.
06:40Number 2. Trends. Pokemon Go.
06:44Nostalgia hits in, like, I'm a kid, I need to play this again, it's real life.
06:47Well, he texted me, like, 30 minutes ago, saying, let's meet up in Hollywood to catch Pokemon.
06:52Try to catch them all, you know?
06:54It was impossible to predict just how massively successful this game would become.
06:58In 2016, Nintendo, the Pokemon Company, and Niantic collaborated to produce a new mobile game
07:04that would allow anyone to become a real-life Pokemon trainer using augmented reality.
07:08With the aid of GPS, Pokemon Go received well over 500 million downloads internationally.
07:15GPS technology places animated monsters inside, in the real world around you.
07:21Then you flick this ball here to catch it, to move on to the next level.
07:25Gotcha!
07:27Users across the world overflowed public places like parks and streets in an attempt to catch a mall.
07:32Amassing billions of dollars in profit, this game really took on a life of its own.
07:37Take a look at this crowd, this is unbelievable, of Pokemon Go users mobilizing into action,
07:44right here in New York City, after reports that a Vaporeon?
07:49This is one of the characters, it's a very sought-after character, as you can see.
07:53Number 2. Songs. 24 Karat Magic. Bruno Mars.
07:57When Bruno Mars dropped this single in late 2016, there was definitely some magic in the air.
08:11Sharing the same title as his third studio album, 24 Karat Magic was a fun and entertaining way to cap off the year.
08:17Put your big ears to the moon. Girls, what y'all trying to do?
08:25Receiving plenty of positive praise from critics, many compared it to the musical stylings of James Brown and Prince.
08:31A blend of funk and R&B, the song soared to the top of the charts,
08:35and would go on to win Mars' Record of the Year at the 60th Grammy Awards.
08:3924 Karat Magic in the air.
08:47Before we unveil our top picks, here are a few honorable mentions.
08:51Song. Into You. Ariana Grande.
08:54We were so into this song in 2016.
08:57A little less conversation and a little more touch my body.
09:01Cause I'm so into you, into you, into you.
09:06Song. Sorry. Justin Bieber.
09:09Still popular a year after debuting, it's never too late to give the song a listen.
09:14Yeah, I know all that I let you down. Let's do it the same, sorry now.
09:20Stranger Things. This show turned everyone upside down.
09:25Let's get out of here. Let's go.
09:28Yeah, that's right. You better run.
09:31These are running deep crazy.
09:33Trend. Deep side part.
09:36This hair trend still has people divided.
09:38Parting it on the side like this is good for somebody who has thinner hair,
09:43so if you have finer, thinner hair that lacks volume,
09:46this is a good hair part for you because it clearly volumizes your hair.

10:08Number 1. Trends. Skinny jeans.
10:12Denim may have evolved over the decade, but every millennial's heart is still zipped up in this trend.
10:17As the biggest fashion craze of 2016, skinny jeans were all the rage.
10:22People wouldn't lie about my tight pants. I got my tight pants. I got my tight pants on.
10:29Snug and tight. The legs were insanely narrow, and for some reason, we couldn't get enough of them.
10:35From the Gap to Levi's, denim retailers were stocked full of the suffocating trousers.
10:40More stretched, it's more people. And by more people, we mean...
10:44Nowadays, wide-leg pants have overthrown our precious hip-huggers.
10:52However, many fashion forecasts are claiming that in 2026, skinny jeans will make their long-awaited return to our closets.
10:59Because what are you gonna do? Wear mom jeans? Can't feel my feet, but I look good.
11:05Number 1. Songs. Lemonade. Beyonce.
11:09If there was one thing that truly defined 2016, it was Beyonce.
11:14I ain't sorry. I ain't sorry. I ain't sorry. I ain't sorry. No, no, hell no.
11:21In April of that year, she dropped a surprise visual album called Lemonade, and fans drank it up.
11:27Featuring some of her most personal and influential work to date, the project featured a variety of different music styles,
11:33ranging from country, to jazz, to hip-hop, and beyond.
11:37When you love me. You love yourself. Love God herself.
11:44Not only were the songs on a different level, but the visual counterpart featured stunning imagery and storytelling.
11:50An exploration of black femininity, Lemonade was and is a revolutionary and powerful part of music history.
