01:00I could get used to this!
01:02But first, on my sofa tonight.
01:04For 25 years, this Liverpool comic has made us laugh,
01:07and continues to play to sold-out arenas around the world.
01:10Now, his life story has inspired a Hollywood movie.
01:13Is this thing on?
01:14It's our good friend, Mr. John Bishop!
01:17CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

01:37CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
01:39CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

01:51Hello!
01:52Hello!
01:53Hello!
01:54Hello!
01:55Hello!
01:56Hello!
01:57And we've got two stars in the gripping new heist thriller Crime 101.
02:01He's the Aussie megastar of Marvel's Thor, Rush, and the hit Extraction films.
02:08And she is the Oscar winning star of Monstrous Ball, Die Another Day, and the X-Men films.
02:13Please welcome Chris Hemsworth and Halle Berry.
02:16CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
02:18Hello, it's so nice to have to see you.
02:22You're welcome to the show.
02:24Hello, welcome to the show.
02:26Over here.
02:27Have a seat.
02:29Yay!
02:33Oh, very good. They've greeted each other.
02:36You're all thinking we picked a good week.
02:39Welcome all, lovely to see you.
02:41So welcome back to Chris and John.
02:43Now, Halle, you were on the show but not on the sofa.
02:45No, only over Zoom.
02:47Yes, in the bad old days, in the bad old days, yes.
02:50And it's a first-time welcome to Rachel in any form.
02:54Hello.
02:55Hi.
02:57Nice to be here.
02:58This is a nice thing.
02:59Chris, you are particularly fond of one of Rachel's films.
03:02My favourite film, this is a big moment for me, is Wedding Crushes.
03:07I have seen that film countless times.
03:10I'd say more than a hundred.
03:12Really?
03:13It's whether it's the...
03:17If I'm lonely on a press tour, like last night, I'll switch it on.
03:21If I'm hungover on a Sunday, it's a feel-good movie.
03:24Christmas Eve, the kids, it's family friends.
03:27It's...
03:28I know most of the dialogue in every scene and inside out.
03:32I love it.
03:33It's a brilliant film.
03:34Oh, my God.
03:35I have to jump in on this, because I told her backstage I wanted to tell this to her.
03:39I share your love of Rachel McAdams.
03:41Good.
03:42Don't we all?
03:43Yes.
03:44The Notebook is my...
03:48When I met my new guy, Van, the first time we got together, I said,
03:53we have to watch The Notebook, because if I don't have a love like this,
03:57and if you don't make me feel like her, this is not happening.
04:01Wow.
04:02And I was like, and if I'm not saying, it ain't over,
04:05and if I'm not jumping around you, then this is not going to work.
04:09That is a high fictional bar.
04:11It's my go-to.
04:13It's my go-to.
04:14When I want to cry, and when I want to feel good, and when I want to feel like I believe in love,
04:19like, that's my movie.
04:20Oh, my God.
04:21I just did the same thing, too.
04:22I love you, Van.
04:24I love you in that movie so much.
04:26And I've been waiting to tell you that.
04:27Oh, my God.
04:28And now I get you.
04:29Tell her that.
04:30Well, my Rachel McAdams.
04:31I love me, girls.
04:36Whenever I want to be a bitch, I watch it.
04:43Very good.
04:44And weirdly, Halle Berry, I'm sure you're going to bond with John, because you have,
04:53you have Liverpudlian roots.
04:54I know.
04:55Your family from Liverpool.
04:56Yes, I just told him that backstage.
04:58He thought, I thought that was not the conversation we were going to be having.
05:01I know.
05:02Can you believe that?
05:03I know.
05:04We could in some way be related.
05:06I said to her, it's good, because at least somebody on the couch can understand me tonight.
05:10So, who was it?
05:11Who was your mom?
05:12My mom's side of the family.
05:13So, did she sound like John Bishop?
05:14No.
05:17Her family left a little too early, but that is the origin of my roots.
05:21OK.
05:22Have you been to Liverpool?
05:23No.
05:24It's not really working, this.
05:26When she said that to me, he said, my mum's from Liverpool.
05:30I thought, oh, my God, we'll find a connection.
05:32I said, what part of Liverpool is she about?
05:33I don't know.
05:35That's where we're from.
05:37Yeah, but that's a lovely thing.
05:38And I'm very proud of that.
05:39Yeah.
05:40And we're proud to have you.
05:41Yes.
05:44Listen, we've got lots to talk about tonight, but let's start with Chris Hemsworth and Halle Berry,
05:48who bring us Crime 101.
05:50It is in cinemas from the 13th of February, and to get us in the mood, check this out.
05:58Take a deep breath in.
06:00And exhale.
06:09What do you see?
06:13What do you feel?
06:15Feel this moment?
06:19I wouldn't die for any insurance company.
06:21Get in.
06:22There's water in the trunk.
06:23Could have been certain.
06:24Could have been a G.
06:25He hits jewels, cash, and high-value items.
06:28He knows exactly what to transport and when.
06:32There's no DNA.
06:33He's in and out in seconds.
06:35Your guy's untraceable.
06:36I need that.
06:37I need that.
06:38I need that.
06:39I came here to make you a business proposition.
06:41Worked to the same company for 11 years.
06:43You're a VP when you should be a partner.
06:45Those high-value items your company insures might make them disappear.
06:50Start by handing me your phone.
06:51So you're a thief.
06:55Life's too short to drive boring cars, right?
06:57If you see her with me, she's taken.
06:58Oh!
06:59So this is one of those great movies with an ensemble cast, multiple kind of stories that
07:09all come together.
07:10So tell us who you both play and how your stories connect.
07:13Would you like to go first?
07:14Would you like to go first?
07:16No, you go.
07:17I play a high-value jewellery thief.
07:21He's meticulous about how he plans these heists.
07:25He has a very strict code of conduct and how he operates.
07:28And there's a sort of moral ambiguity in the world he exists in.
07:32And he's obviously on the wrong side of the law on one hand, but he's still a good human
07:37at heart.
07:38And Mark Ruffalo's in the film as well.
07:40And the three of our stories are basically on a collision course into a pretty dramatic,
07:47climactic finale.
07:48But it's a throwback to the 70s, 80s, 90s heist films I think we all love with the
07:54contemporary feel.
07:55Yeah.
07:56There's complex characters, there's a deep level of emotion, but it's entertaining and
08:00it's sleek and sexy and visually pretty stunning.
08:03It is absolutely gorgeous.
08:05You are the thief, Mark Ruffalo the detective.
08:07So Hallie, who are you?
08:09Yeah, I am a high-value insurance agent working with these insurance companies that appraise
08:17high-value assets and very wealthy people.
08:21And she has worked her whole life.
08:23And what Chris and what our characters share in common is we both grew up with meager means
08:28and we both have worked really hard to get where we are.
08:32And my character, of course as many women as we age up, our businesses often age us out
08:38and tell us we're too old and we're no longer value.
08:42So my character decides that she's not going to accept that.
08:47She meets Davis, Chris's character, and she's facing a moral dilemma.
08:54What will she do?
08:55Will she stay on the right side of right or go to the right side of wrong?
09:00And it is interesting because it's a thing that links all those three characters.
09:04Yeah, all of us.
09:05It's sort of like sliding doors.
09:06We all intersect with each other at certain times throughout the movie
09:09and we find out that we have a lot more in common than you would think that we would have.
09:13Yeah.
09:14And it's interesting, you know, you've made so many movies over the years
09:16and I heard you in an interview saying that, but actually this is one of your happiest working experiences.
09:20Oh, this was amazing.
09:21And you know, when you've done it 30 years, when you say this has been one of my all-time best,
09:26that's really saying something.
09:27These guys, Chris, Mark, Bart, Barry, all of them, I mean, my feet did not hit the ground.
09:34And I say that because you've heard people talk about stories of all the horror things that have gone wrong in our industry.
09:39Not the case here.
09:41Like, I have never felt more seen, respected, cared for, stood up for, protected than I did on this movie with all of these men.
09:49It was, I hope, we're going to do Crime 103.
09:53Mark, Chris and I, we're going to do Crime 103.
09:58And, look, I knew you probably enjoyed making this movie, Chris,
10:01because you like driving and there's a lot of driving.
10:03A lot of driving, yeah.
10:04And you do it.
10:05I do, yeah.
10:06I was very lucky in this film.
10:07I mean, I shot Rush maybe 15 years ago, Formula One film, where I did a lot of training then.
10:12I grew up in Australia, lived in the outback and farms and a lot of paddock bombs, sort of rusted old cars
10:18that would demolish and derbies into each other and, you know, mostly illegal sort of activity.
10:23But you kind of get comfortable behind the wheel and, um, in this film I adjusted like a kid in a candy store.
10:30It's like I'm going to go top speed, weave in and out of traffic, handbrake, turn, do this, and no one's going to pull me over and give me a speeding ticket.
10:36Wow.
10:37But it has a sort of grit and an authenticity to it.
10:39And you can't, you can try and do that on green screen and it doesn't have the same feel, you know?
10:44Because, Hallie, were you jealous?
10:45So jealous.
10:46I got to do none of that.
10:48I love stunts.
10:49I love to get in there and I got to do none of that.
10:52Did you get to do some insurance research?
10:55High risk, high value insurance research.
10:59Yeah.
11:00Oh, yeah.
11:01Yeah.
11:02Powerpoint presentations.
11:03But actually, you do love action and stunts and things.
11:06When did you, because it's one thing loving, how do you discover you love it?
11:08What was the movie where you kind of went, oh, I'm really good at this?
11:11Well, I was a gymnast as a kid, so I don't know if you were an ice skater.
11:14So that's another thing.
11:15Yes.
11:16I had dreams of being, like, the black Nadia Comaneci, you know?
11:22Like, that was my dream.
11:24So when I did Catwoman, that was the first time I did all of my own stunts.
11:29And I tried to make my Catwoman really like a, like a cat.
11:33And so I was into all the, I learned capoeira for that movie and I really got into doing all of those stunts myself.
11:39And so that's when my love of, and I realized that also, when a performer can do all of their own stunts,
11:45that frees up the director to put the camera anywhere and shoot from any angle.
11:49Because you don't have to sort of accommodate a double, you know?
11:53Yeah.
11:54You can sort of give them a lot more to work with.
11:55And that's when I realized I would try to lean into doing all of my own stunts.
11:59But you have to, you have to know what you're doing.
12:02I did, I did Doctor Who.
12:04Um, and...
12:06I'm too sorry.
12:08I thought I'd bring you back to the UK, you know what I mean?
12:11APPLAUSE
12:14I did Doctor Who and there was a, so Doctor Who's like a scientific series over here,
12:20where there's a time machine that flies through space.
12:23And the first day, they said, your character is going through space and it crashes,
12:28so you've got to fall on the floor.
12:29They said, do you want a mat?
12:31I said, no, don't worry about it.
12:32So I said, and it just said fall on the floor.
12:35And they said, do you want a stunt double?
12:36I said, don't worry about it.
12:37So I literally just threw myself on the floor.
12:40BANG!
12:41OK, let's do it again.
12:42I'm like, what?
12:43He said, you've got to do that about 15 times.
12:46I'm like, fuck off, get him in.
12:52And it's interesting, you mentioned Catwoman there.
12:54And Catwoman's one of those films that, you know, it's no secret at the time,
12:59its reception was a little rocky.
13:01But since then, it's taken on a kind of life of its own, hasn't it?
13:03It really has.
13:04It's been amazing to see that the younger genera...
13:06Like, they get the joke.
13:08And it does have a life of...
13:10It's the film that, I think, out of all of my movies, believe it or not,
13:13people walk up to me and they're like...
13:15And I'm like, OK, Catwoman?
13:18Or, you know, they say, you're a Catwoman!
13:21So people really...
13:22Do you purr back?
13:23I do.
13:24And I just...
13:25That'd be awesome.
13:26Say, that's your experience with Halle Berry.
13:28She purred at me.
13:30You've had it now.
13:32Rachel, in terms of, like, stunts and things,
13:33you do have an adventurous side,
13:34because what did you...
13:35You did cycling in Australia or something, didn't you?
13:36Yeah, I did.
13:37I thought, this sounds like a great idea.
13:38I'll cycle around.
13:39Do you know Magnetic Island?
13:40Oh, yeah, yeah.
13:41No Magnetic Island, yeah.
13:42You do?
13:43Yeah, I've been there as well, yeah.
13:44Yeah, because you're a bike guy.
13:45Yeah, I'm a guy.
13:46Oh, yeah.
13:47Oh, yeah.
13:48Oh, yeah.
13:49Oh, yeah.
13:50Oh, yeah.
13:51Oh, yeah.
13:52Oh, yeah.
13:53Oh, yeah.
13:54Oh, yeah.
13:55Oh, yeah.
13:56Oh, yeah.
13:57Oh, yeah.
13:58Oh, yeah.
13:59Oh, yeah.
14:00Oh, yeah.
14:01Oh, yeah.
14:02Oh, yeah.
14:03I was, you know, I was travelling.
14:04I...
14:05The first time I backpacked by myself, I wanted to go to Australia.
14:08A little Canadian girl, I thought, I'll just go as far as I possibly can.
14:12My parents were like, sure, OK.
14:14So I went to Australia and...
14:16How old were you?
14:17I was 19.
14:18What?
14:19See, that's...that's big.
14:20Yeah.
14:21You know what I mean?
14:23No, it is.
14:24That's a big thing to go backpacking by yourself to Australia.
14:26Yeah, big, dumb.
14:28But, uh, it was great.
14:30It was great.
14:31But, yes, I wound up, um, with, you know, a random guy from London.
14:36Uh, biking.
14:38Biking.
14:39Yeah, that's what we call it in England.
14:42Strictly biking.
14:45Um, he had his bike, I had my bike.
14:48We stayed to our bikes.
14:50Yes.
14:51Oh, yes.
14:52And, uh, uh, yeah, and I was dead weight.
14:55He was so fit.
14:56And, um, and he was trying to be really patient.
14:59But I was hallucinating by the end.
15:02I was praying to God.
15:04There was no civilization.
15:06There was no people.
15:07There were no restaurants.
15:08Chris lives there.
15:09There's a couple of people.
15:10The Australian tourism board are loving this show.
15:11Nothing.
15:12Nothing.
15:13There's one guy on a bike.
15:14Looking for Rachel.
15:15LAUGHTER
15:16Just talking about, uh, travelling around Australia, you did this such a lovely film, Chris.
15:35Uh, the film where you're motorcycling round Australia with your dad.
15:39Yeah.
15:40And tell us about that journey.
15:41Yeah, so, um, it was initially part of the Limitless series.
15:45And then it became its own thing.
15:48And, and so we separated and it was an individual episode.
15:51But, um, my dad was, uh, diagnosed with, uh, Alzheimer's a few years ago.
15:56And the, just, the director came to me and said, look, I know it's a very sensitive subject.
16:02And, um, we have this idea where there's this thing called reminiscence therapy,
16:08where we basically, the hippocampus, the part of the brain that Alzheimer's dementia is attacking,
16:13you stimulate via old memories and, and, and reignite neural pathways and so on potentially.
16:19Um, and it's somewhat experimental, but they're getting, you know, there's a lot of positive results.
16:24Yeah.
16:25And so we had this idea about going back to the family home we lived in and doing a road trip up to Northern Territory.
16:31Um, we lived in a Aboriginal community, four and a half hours outside of, uh, Catherine in, in Arnhem Land.
16:39And, um, where he was a bullcatcher. This is 30 something years ago.
16:43So we're going to do this motorbike road trip.
16:45And, and I was very apprehensive about it.
16:47I didn't want to sort of exploit anything he was going through for the sake of sort of drama and entertainment and so on.
16:53Yeah, yeah, yeah.
16:54But he said, man, a deep integrity and, and, and humility.
16:58And I said to him, look, do you have any interest?
17:00And he said, oh yeah, sounds like a lot of fun.
17:02And look, maybe, you know, me sharing my story might help someone else.
17:06And so we, um, embarked on this, this, this road trip.
17:10And we started in, in Melbourne, where we lived.
17:13And a friend of ours bought the house we lived in 30 something, 40.
17:18Well, we, when I was born in Melbourne, lived in the house when I was probably six till 18.
17:25So 20 something years ago, he bought the house.
17:28And he had a series of photographs that he had taken of the house when he bought it.
17:34And so the art department said to him, can we have those photos?
17:38And they redressed the entire house.
17:40This is amazing.
17:41According to those photographs.
17:44And then we went to the house and walked in and it was like stepping back in time.
17:50Oh my God.
17:51That, I mean, it's just, it gives you chills, doesn't it?
17:54Yeah.
17:55It was remarkable.
17:56And, and I, it was this overwhelming nostalgia, this ginormous reminder of the passage of time.
18:03Emotional because of the memories we had there and now the memories we weren't going to have
18:10or the memories that were potentially disappearing.
18:13And my dad walked in and he's like, I said, you know, I'm trying to, you know, there's cameras on us.
18:18And what do you think?
18:19And he goes, oh, it's great.
18:20It's great.
18:21I said, how do you feel?
18:22He goes, I don't know about all the theatrics, mate.
18:24You know?
18:25All the cameras and stuff.
18:27I said, yeah, we're doing a documentary.
18:29Anyway, and he kept saying, where's your mum?
18:31She'd love this.
18:32And I said, well, she's not in the episode.
18:34And she goes, oh, okay.
18:35And then a minute later, he's like, where's your mum?
18:37What's she doing?
18:38And I said, well, dad, she's not, she's, she's here, but she's not.
18:40It's just us.
18:41And, and he kept asking.
18:43And it was so beautiful.
18:44He wanted to share it with her.
18:46And then eventually they were like, just, just bring her up.
18:48And so she came into the house.
18:50For her, it really hit home because it was a real reminder of the sort of memories we'd had and what we're missing.
18:57And then he, you saw him relax, you know, that was his sort of anchor.
19:01Yeah.
19:02As things are sort of being taken away and disappearing.
19:05And it was quite beautiful and, and, and profound and heartbreaking.
19:10And, and I've had people say to me, who've seen the episode, who are suffering with dementia or Alzheimer's,
19:15say, I wish my kids could see this or my family members, because people dance around the issue.
19:21No one comes and says, what are you afraid of?
19:23How are you feeling?
19:24Because they, they, it's too hard to confront.
19:27So they suffer in silence.
19:29And so I was asking questions to, to my father and yes, on camera, but the questions I probably wouldn't have been brave enough to ask.
19:38And those things.
19:39And how's he feeling?
19:40And it was, I asked him in the doc, I said, you know, what are you afraid of?
19:45And he said, I just don't want to be a burden, you know?
19:48And it said, it said so much to me about him.
19:51And not that I could have any more respect for my father, but the fact that his main concern was not being a burden to those around him.
19:59More so than I'm losing my memories and my time is expiring, this was beautiful.
20:03But the episode became about connection and about love and family and what's important, which is a shared moment.
20:09And also there's that lovely thing of sharing memories.
20:11Yeah, it's about sharing memories.
20:12And in the midst of all of that, there's a very sweet but funny moment where you and your mum and dad are in that original house.
20:21And you are watching, particularly this is the first film you ever made.
20:25Yeah, it should have been the first and last film I ever made.
20:29We created this ridiculous sort of parody of Steve Irwin, The Crocodile Hunter.
20:35Well, we've got that clip.
20:36I know you.
20:37It's the clip of the family.
20:38So please enjoy Chris Hemsworth's first ever film performance in Crocodile Hunter.
20:44Can we see it?
20:45Yeah, you can pop it on.
20:48The Crocodile Hunter.
20:54You almost felt crocodile correct.
20:56How are you going, folks?
20:58We've got a real bloody river in store for you today.
21:01Oh, this is gold.
21:02We're going to be chasing the Siberian tiger Australian fox.
21:07It's going to be bloody unreal.
21:09Let's go have a look-see.
21:12Now, I've got myself a little son of a fox.
21:15That was my hat.
21:16How are you going?
21:17The riding hat.
21:18Come here, come here.
21:19Have a look-see.
21:20That's what I'm talking about.
21:21Deadly ass.
21:22He's digging a hole.
21:23Remember, when he's not looking.
21:26Over here.
21:27Over here.
21:28Over here.
21:29Over here.
21:30I've got him.
21:31That guy wasn't hurt in the making of his film.
21:33You get him in the full Nelson, like so.
21:35And you've got to get him...
21:37Look at the dog.
21:41Next week, we'll be chasing the Australian grasshopper.
21:44Can't wait.
21:45See yous then.
21:47That was your first film.
21:48Everyone can enjoy your latest film.
22:01Chris Hemsworth and Halle Berry in Cry 101 from the 13th of February.
22:06Good.
22:07They're shorts.
22:08Top pair of shorts.
22:09Top pair of shorts.
22:10Oh, my God.
22:11There's something very Australian about that.
22:14Yeah.
22:15Yeah.
22:16Top pair of shorts.
22:17That's very cool.
22:18Next up, Rachel McAdams brings us a brilliant movie from Evil Dead director Sam Raimi.
22:24It's called Send Help.
22:26It opens in cinemas on the 5th of February.
22:29So, Rachel, you play Linda Little.
22:32She's fantastic.
22:33Tell us about Linda Little.
22:34Who is she?
22:35What's she up to?
22:36Well, Linda is a real worker bee.
22:39She's been at her company for seven years and she can do everybody's job with her eyes closed.
22:44And she's in line for a big promotion.
22:47She's very excited.
22:48She's going to use the money to get a bigger apartment and go travelling.
22:52And then she gets passed over for the douchebag friend of the bus.
22:58who's been there for six months.
23:01Oh.
23:02And it really grinds her gears.
23:04It would.
23:05And she's just about had enough, you know?
23:08Yeah.
23:09Yes.
23:10I'd rather say, eat her asshole.
23:12Yes.
23:13Grind her gears is...
23:15It's not pissed off, you know?
23:16It's not enough.
23:17Sorry, once again, eat her asshole?
23:18Eat her asshole.
23:19OK.
23:20It really eats her asshole.
23:21It really eats her asshole.
23:23Like that?
23:24Like that?
23:25Yes.
23:26Like that.
23:27Good job.
23:29I'll work on it.
23:30But tell us more, because then a big thing happens.
23:38We were allowed to know the big thing, aren't we?
23:39Oh, the rest?
23:40The rest?
23:41Well, the send help bit.
23:42Right.
23:43Um...
23:44So...
23:45You remember what happens, right?
23:47I don't know how long ago you filmed this, Rachel.
23:50It was like six months ago.
23:52Um...
23:53After you lost your asshole.
23:55Yes.
23:56Uh, yes.
23:57So she gets invited to prove herself once again.
24:01Um, on the company trip to Bangkok, um, he...
24:06Her new boss invites her to solve a problem there, and they get on the plane, and...
24:10Um...
24:11The plane...
24:13Goes...
24:14Down.
24:15Is that a spoiler, though?
24:17No.
24:18No, it's really not.
24:19It's called send help.
24:20Right.
24:21I think...
24:22I think you'll...
24:23The audience will be disappointed if they don't know help.
24:28They'll be like, why does she need help?
24:30I don't know.
24:31The plane is growing.
24:35Yes, yes.
24:36And then she winds up washing up on a Thailand beach, and, um...
24:42And she thrives.
24:43And she thrives.
24:44Yeah, she does very well, because she's a fan of Survivor.
24:47She's a big fan of Survivor, and she spends a lot of her time, her spare time...
24:50She's auditioned for Survivor countless times, never been chosen.
24:54Wow.
24:55I know.
24:56That's her moment.
24:57It's more asshole eating.
24:58Yes.
25:01I've never heard this expression before.
25:03I've made...
25:04I've coined...
25:05I've made this up.
25:06Everybody in my life...
25:07That's her.
25:08Hayley...
25:09Hayley's...
25:10She's got Scouse DNA.
25:11You know what I mean?
25:13I can find the...
25:14I can find the spare end.
25:16I can get to it.
25:17Eat your ass off.
25:19I can't wait.
25:20There's some people out there going, yeah, great.
25:23You're going to take off.
25:25Let's do it.
25:26It's going to take off.
25:27Listen, our clip is you and your boss, played by Dylan O'Brien.
25:30And it's you coming to terms with your new situation on the island.
25:35You can't put that kind of weight on that yet.
25:38You don't tell me what to do.
25:39How about that?
25:40You know what?
25:43You think you're so smart.
25:45Well, guess who you're talking to?
25:47CEO of a next-gen 500 company, baby.
25:50That's right.
25:51Accompany your father, Bill.
25:56God rest his soul.
26:00Oh, wow.
26:01Oh, wow.
26:02You know what?
26:03You're so done.
26:04Huh?
26:05Yeah.
26:06You're so fired.
26:07Oh, am I?
26:08Yeah.
26:09Oh, no.
26:11Where are you going?
26:12Where the fuck I want to go?
26:13Making my own camp.
26:14Oh.
26:15It's not so hard.
26:16Eat some leaves and some sticks.
26:19I've seen you do it enough.
26:21Well, I wish you luck.
26:24And I'll tell you where to send my last check.
26:27Second coconut tree on the left.
26:29Yeah.
26:34Obviously, you weren't stranded on a desert island in real life,
26:37but as Rachel McAdams, you did face a lot of hardship.
26:41I feel there was a lot of fluid in this film for you.
26:44Mm-hm.
26:45Yeah.
26:46I mean, there's obviously water, sea, all of that, but there's more.
26:49Yes.
26:50Yeah.
26:51A lot of blood.
26:52A lot of blood?
26:53Yeah, which I knew.
26:54I knew that when I read it.
26:56I mean, I knew there was some blood.
26:57I didn't know quite how much.
26:59The Sam Raimi level of blood.
27:00There would be.
27:01Sam Raimi level of blood.
27:02There's really no...
27:03Yep.
27:04There you are.
27:05Oh!
27:06That is Sam Raimi.
27:07Like, he's very hands-on with the blood.
27:09Oh, he insists.
27:10It has to be him.
27:11No one else could do it.
27:13And he'll sit there for like an hour before we actually shoot it
27:17and practice.
27:19Not actually throwing blood, but like, he's getting ready...
27:22Oh, right.
27:23To do it.
27:24The wrist action.
27:25Yes.
27:26Click.
27:27Just click that up.
27:28Click that up.
27:29Put it on the internet to everyone who watch this show.
27:31He's just getting ready.
27:36I'm just walking into all of it tonight.
27:38Oh, my God.
27:40Um, yes.
27:41But no, he's a real team player.
27:45We all saw it.
27:46We all saw it.
27:47I mean, this is...
27:48Because when you put that picture up, this shows what acting
27:52really is.
27:53Can we see that picture?
27:54And again, look, there's all these people around you.
27:57There's a false head of a ball probably being out by a runner
28:01somewhere.
28:02He's throwing stuff at you.
28:03And, you know, you trained for this.
28:05LAUGHTER
28:06I did.
28:07I chose this life.
28:10LAUGHTER
28:11It's not easy.
28:12And here's the thing, Rachel.
28:14You, Jack DeGreer, but as Hallie mentioned earlier,
28:18originally, sports, that was your thing.
28:21I was sporty spice, yes.
28:22Yeah.
28:23Yeah, I loved sports.
28:24What did you do?
28:25Ice skating you were very good at.
28:27I was OK.
28:28I was OK.
28:29I was OK.
28:30Is this figure skating?
28:31Yes.
28:32Yeah.
28:33Oh, there you are.
28:34Oh, there I am.
28:35With my little medal around my neck.
28:36Yeah, see, that's how good you are.
28:37You won a medal.
28:38You won a medal.
28:39I recently threw away all my medals, all my badges.
28:43No.
28:44All my...literally three days ago.
28:46Why?
28:47By mistake?
28:48No.
28:49What?
28:51I'm trying to Marie Kondo my life.
28:54You know, I'm like...
28:55My mum was like, well, what if your children...
28:57I was like, what are they going to do with my skating tests?
29:01You know?
29:02No?
29:03At the Rachel McAdams Museum.
29:04What will they put in the Rachel McAdams Museum?
29:06I know.
29:07The exhibits will be empty.
29:10They should have all her skating medals.
29:12You know, you've got a full ticket off there from 1954.
29:17You're my new best friends.
29:22And did you just put them in the garbage?
29:26Yes, and it did pain me, but I thanked them and let them go.
29:33OK.
29:34Yeah.
29:35I've been studying Buddhism.
29:36Yeah.
29:38In terms of winning things, Halle Berry, wow.
29:41No, you...
29:42This is amazing.
29:43Oh, no.
29:44This is amazing.
29:45So, I think I knew that you'd been a, you know, a teenage pageant kind of beauty queen.
29:50But I had no idea the amount you won.
29:53I mean, there were serious prizes.
29:55It was insane.
29:56I know.
29:57I got good stuff.
29:58No, you really did.
29:59I was in it for the loot.
30:00Yeah.
30:01Because how old were you?
30:02Like, you were 16, 17 when you were...
30:03I was 17, yes.
30:04So, it was Miss Teenage.
30:05Yeah, it was Miss Teen.
30:06I didn't really aspire to be a beauty pageant queen.
30:10It was my boyfriend at the time who really wanted a girlfriend who was a beauty queen.
30:15So, he took my high school picture and entered it into the Miss Teen Ohio competition.
30:22And I remember one day, I just got a letter in the mail and says,
30:25you are a finalist in the Miss Teen Ohio.
30:27And I was like, what?
30:28And I had no idea how it happened.
30:30And then he told me the story.
30:31So, I showed up at that contest.
30:33I put on my prom dress.
30:34And I showed up.
30:35And I really, literally could care less.
30:38I was just there because he wanted me to do this.
30:41And I ended up winning the damn thing.
30:44And I was like, oh, my God.
30:46But what I didn't know is when you win one, then you have to be...
30:49I was now Miss Teen Ohio.
30:51I had to go to Miss Teen America.
30:52Like, I didn't know I had to keep going.
30:54Yeah.
30:55And I went to Miss Teen America.
30:56And I won there.
30:57Then I had to go to Miss Ohio.
30:58Then I won there.
30:59Then I had to go to Miss USA.
31:00Like, it kept going and going and going until I finally lost.
31:03But along the way, tell us some of the stuff you won.
31:06Oh, my God.
31:07I won a car.
31:08Yeah.
31:09A Chrysler LeBaron at the time.
31:12Convertible, was it?
31:13Convertible.
31:14Yes, convertible.
31:15White convertible is amazing.
31:16Wow.
31:17A fur coat.
31:18Like $10,000.
31:19That was like $10,000.
31:20I had $10,000, like tax-free money.
31:22Wow.
31:23Jewelry, diamonds, clothes, wardrobe.
31:26Yeah.
31:27So, so, so what happened to the pimp?
31:29Sorry, the boyfriend.
31:34You know what?
31:35He went to jail three times.
31:40The third one, that was a breaker.
31:42I can't now.
31:43He went to jail.
31:44Yeah, three times.
31:45Broke up and he ended up in prison three times.
31:47Rachel, just getting back to send help, you have form playing the anti-hero because Regina
31:53George in John's favourite film Mean Girls, I mean...
31:57Yes.
31:58Is it true that you didn't understand how much people would hate Regina George?
32:04Yeah.
32:05Yes.
32:06I did.
32:07Well, yes.
32:08I did.
32:09I didn't know.
32:10I didn't know how it would hit.
32:12I didn't know, like, you know, yes, how hated she would be for how long.
32:17So the first time you saw a screening with an audience, was that when it dawned on you?
32:22Yes.
32:23Yes.
32:24Everyone except for my best friend who was beside me.
32:26So when I got hit by the bus, everyone cheered and she went, no!
32:31Woo!
32:32And I was, like, yanking her down.
32:36I was, like, right here.
32:38I'm alive.
32:39We're good.
32:40And she was crying.
32:42But she was the only one who was upset about me getting...
32:46She saw a very different film.
32:48Yes.
32:49Well, everyone's going to love Rachel McAdams in Send Help.
32:52You can see it in cinemas from next Thursday.
32:55That's where that's out.
32:56Yeah.
32:57Now, er, John Bishop, I love this.
33:03John Bishop is in a Hollywood movie.
33:05Well, his story is, er, is this thing on?
33:08It's out today.
33:09It's directed by Bradley Cooper, stars Will Arnett and Laura Dern,
33:12and they've been on the show talking about it.
33:15So I suppose the main thing is, how the hell did this happen, John?
33:19And what does it feel like?
33:21Er, I'm massive in Hollywood.
33:23No, it's, it's really, really weird, really strange,
33:28because, er, I, I met Will Arnett eight years ago, er,
33:33on a barge in Amsterdam, which is the start of all good stories.
33:37But I met him, I met him through a mutual friend, Chris Trichier,
33:40who's a, who's a, you know, who's a film producer,
33:43and he said, tell Will your story of how you got into comedy.
33:47So I told him, Will went, that's a great story.
33:49I'd love to try and write it as a script with my writing partner,
33:52Mark Shappell.
33:53So I said, great, you start writing it.
33:56But I, you know, I want to chip in,
33:58I want to be part of the writing process.
34:00So they would write a script and send it to me,
34:02and then I'd send some notes, and I'd write some bits and send it back,
34:05and then they'd send me the new version with none of my bits in.
34:08And I'd send some, I thought they haven't got the email,
34:11I'd send it back, and then they'd still come back without my bits.
34:15And I went, my bit's shit, boys.
34:17And the truth was, it was too close to me.
34:21You know, the story of how we got into comedy,
34:24the reality of it was too close.
34:26So I had to step away and allow them to write it.
34:29I'm so glad I did.
34:31There was a big portion of trust involved in that,
34:33but the end result is brilliant.
34:36And obviously you spoke to, you know, the writers and everything,
34:39and told them the story, but Melanie, she spoke to,
34:44was it Laura Dern who plays her in the movie?
34:46Yes, so Laura Dern got cast,
34:48and then through mutual friend Laura reached out
34:51and said to Melanie, can I meet you?
34:53So Melanie went and sat with Laura
34:56and just downloaded her side of the story and what went on.
35:00So Laura's character, honestly, God reflects,
35:02mentally so, so much.
35:04And there's, there's one particular scene where,
35:07which was true.
35:09We got a note, you know,
35:10so you sometimes get from kids where they go,
35:12there's head lice in the school.
35:14Can you check each other?
35:15And we weren't living together.
35:17So she had to come to my house
35:18and we had to check each other for head lice,
35:20which is such an intimate thing.
35:23I know, yeah.
35:24And it's such an intimate thing to do though
35:26when you're not living together.
35:28You know what I mean?
35:29And so, and so she told Laura that
35:31and then Bradley put it straight into the film.
35:33Oh, wow.
35:34And that's the clip, that's the clip we've got.
35:36This is, this is Laura and Will with nits.
35:41I think I might have lice.
35:42Hmm.
35:43And he's...
35:44Are you seeing it jump off me?
35:45Why are you...
35:46Let's get you in the chair.
35:47I think that's what we're gonna do.
35:48Yeah, you don't...
35:49Oh, one just crawling in between.
35:50No, oh, you're pregnant.
35:51You are so pregnant.
35:52What?
35:53You hooked up with a bug.
35:54All right, guys.
35:55Guys.
35:56But dad, that's how you said you get lice.
35:57Oh, is that how you said it?
35:58Yeah.
35:59No.
36:00It was a joke because the video said
36:01we're looking for baby eggs, right?
36:02It was a joke.
36:03Did you hook up with a bug?
36:04No.
36:05Well, you've got lice, so...
36:06Yeah, you did.
36:07You hooked up with a bug.
36:08You promised not to tell them.
36:09You hooked up with a bug.
36:10You know what?
36:11You guys need to rehearse.
36:12Let's go.
36:13Okay.
36:14Let's go.
36:15Get busy.
36:16I already know it.
36:17Keep the volume down, too.
36:18Keep the volume up?
36:19No, not up.
36:20Keep the volume down.
36:21I'm serious about the volume.
36:22So you're really not seeing anything?
36:23There's no little bites?
36:24I don't think so.
36:26To be honest, it's just looking...
36:27Now it's making me itch.
36:28I think that I must have it.
36:29Would you check me?
36:30Sure.
36:32Aw.
36:33It is, I think, for a British audience watching this,
36:41it'll seem quite far away from your life,
36:43because it's set in America now,
36:45Will Arnett is playing you,
36:47but those big scenes in it are real.
36:51Like, Melanie, she did accidentally see you doing stand-up.
36:55Yeah, yeah, yeah.
36:56So the big...
36:57So for people who don't know, I fell into stand-up
37:00because we split up, me and my wife,
37:02and I was a month away from being 34,
37:05and the only reason I went into stand-up
37:08is I was...
37:09One Monday night.
37:10I used to have the kids every weekend,
37:12so Monday I used to be on a downer,
37:15and I was walking past a comedy club in Manchester
37:18called The Frog and Bucket,
37:19which I'm sure you're very familiar with.
37:21Oh, I know.
37:22You've been there.
37:23You've been there many times.
37:25Yeah.
37:26And I was...
37:27I'd been to two comedy clubs in my whole life.
37:29I had no interest in stand-up comedy at all.
37:32And anyway, they...
37:34I thought, I'll go in,
37:35because comedy is great,
37:36and anyone who's ever on their own,
37:37just go to a comedy club,
37:38you're sitting in a room full of strangers,
37:40but everyone laughs at the same time.
37:42So I thought, I'll go in there,
37:43and it'll cheer me up.
37:44And, erm...
37:45I used to do this joke,
37:47which is not the best joke in the world,
37:49and I've said this story before,
37:50but it's the only story that's the truth is...
37:53I used to...
37:54I used to do this joke
37:55to let all the ladies in the room
37:57know I was a single man.
37:59I used to say,
38:00I'm really sad at the moment, ladies and gentlemen,
38:02because me and my wife are not together.
38:05Oh!
38:06It's not that sad, honestly.
38:08We're not divorced or anything.
38:09I've just killed her.
38:10LAUGHTER
38:11But I knew I was going to miss her,
38:13so I've kept her head in the fridge.
38:15LAUGHTER
38:16It's a terrible joke, terrible!
38:18And I got announced on stage this Thursday,
38:21and I said this joke on stage,
38:24and as I said it,
38:25I looked to the left,
38:26and the head that was meant to be in the fridge
38:28was in the audience.
38:29LAUGHTER
38:30Oh, no!
38:31This is the true story.
38:32So she was in the audience,
38:34and what had happened,
38:35we'd been apart for almost two years at this point,
38:37and when you're apart,
38:39you live parallel lives,
38:40so you don't really know what's going on in each other's life,
38:43you deal with the logistics of children.
38:45She had a new job,
38:46the people she was working with
38:47were going out for a birthday do.
38:49Someone said,
38:50let's go to a comedy club.
38:51She didn't know I did stand-up comedy.
38:53The people she was with didn't even know my name.
38:56So when I get announced on,
38:58they don't understand why she goes,
38:59what the...
39:00LAUGHTER
39:01And then I go on stage in front of a room full of strangers
39:04and tell them I've killed her and kept her head in the fridge.
39:07LAUGHTER
39:08Oh, no!
39:09So...
39:10So that...
39:11That twist is in the film where they get back together,
39:13and what happened with us is that...
39:16I remember we were literally going through the final stages
39:19of the divorce.
39:20I remember seeing that and thinking,
39:22God, that's going to cost me another ten grand.
39:24LAUGHTER
39:25And then she came over,
39:27and we started talking.
39:29And it was lovely.
39:30We discovered each other again.
39:32She said, she said,
39:33that was a surprise.
39:34I said, look, I'm really sorry about the whole head thing.
39:36She said, no.
39:37She said, the surprise was you were funny.
39:40You made me laugh.
39:41LAUGHTER
39:43Why weren't you doing that earlier?
39:44I know.
39:45She said, you made me laugh.
39:46She said, you reminded me of the man that I first met.
39:49Oh...
39:50She said, whatever happened to you?
39:52I said, I married you.
39:53LAUGHTER
39:55So she said, well, do you think we can do something?
39:58So we ended up...
39:59We ended up...
40:00Like in the film,
40:01we ended up dating each other secretly,
40:03and then we ended up going to relate,
40:04and then we ended up getting back together.
40:06So now we've been married for 33 years.
40:08Oh, wow.
40:09APPLAUSE
40:10You can see why they wanted to make it into a film.
40:13And it's a lovely story on a lovely film.
40:16Listen, we must very quickly mention,
40:18stand-up is still very much a part of your life.
40:21Your new company tour, Let's Go Round Again.
40:23Tickets go on sale today.
40:26Oh, wow.
40:27But you won't be seeing it till 2027.
40:29I know.
40:30Well, to be honest with you, I didn't want to launch it,
40:32but I'm doing all of this press,
40:33and I'm thinking if I don't...
40:34I can't come back in two months, can I?
40:36LAUGHTER
40:37So we were planning to do it anyway.
40:39Stand-up is what I do.
40:40That's my job.
40:41You know, if you're an actor, it's what you do.
40:43Yeah.
40:44So I've just booked it in.
40:45I haven't written a joke yet, but I've booked it in.
40:47LAUGHTER
40:48It looks very good.
40:50Oh, it looks so funny.
40:52LAUGHTER
40:53Well, that's the tour.

45:28Oh, my God, you're so sorry.
45:29Oh, I'm sorry.
45:31Oh, I'm sorry.
45:33You're weird in a kid.
45:35I'm...
45:36Blanket.
45:38Oh, lovely, that is lovely.
45:41That's all, of course, let's be honest.
45:43How far does it go?
45:45My best to go is there.
45:46Oh, that's lovely.
45:48Christmas.
45:49Christmas.
45:50Give me my dress now.
45:52Thank you very much for your big dress and for that lovely performance.
45:57Now, that song, this is exciting.
45:59Yeah.
46:00It's off your next album.
46:01Yeah.
46:02Yeah.
46:03It's off your next album.
46:04Yeah.
46:05Superbloom.
46:06Yes.
46:07Hence the flower, which you just announced this very day.
46:10Yes.
46:11Well done.
46:14It will be out on April the 10th.
46:18There is the beediest...
46:19You know.
46:20There is the beediest thing.
46:21Yeah.
46:22Superbloom.
46:23It's all part of one thing.
46:24Now, new album, there's some special cameos on here, I know.
46:28Yes.
46:29Tell us who.
46:30Well, just one because, I don't know, the only feature on the record is Coleman Domingo
46:35being...
46:36Hello.
46:37Hello.
46:38Yeah.
46:39Who is fabulous.
46:40He's being like the voice of God in the introduction to a song.
46:44How did you bag Coleman Domingo?
46:45OK.
46:46So, I have this thing.
46:47And this is how we're friends.
46:49Yeah.
46:50That's a bit inappropriate.
46:51Sorry.
46:52This is how we're friends.
46:53You have my approval.
46:54No.
46:55This is how I make friends.
46:57So, watch out, guys.
46:58I have a podcast that I do with my mum, Lenny.
47:03Yeah.
47:04Who actually tonight is just being a very supportive mum somewhere.
47:07She's somewhere.
47:08Where's Lenny?
47:09Hi, Mum.
47:10Oh, there she is.
47:11Hello.
47:12Hi, Lenny.
47:13Yeah, I've met her mum before.
47:14Yeah.
47:15So, we do this podcast, Cable Manners, and Coleman came on, and we made friends, and I...
47:23Yeah, I make friends.
47:24Like, John came on.
47:25Yeah, you've been on with John, right?
47:26Yeah.
47:27Yeah, yeah, yeah.
47:28It's great.
47:29You sit there and have dinner.
47:30It's also Jesse in the moment.
47:31Brilliant.
47:32So, Lenny and Jesse, you cook, but do you get to choose what you eat, John, or is it
47:35just whatever they make?
47:36Yeah, well, I'm vegetarian, which was a challenge, let's be honest.
47:40I think you got, like, you got some delicious nuts, didn't you?
47:42Yeah, yeah.
47:43No, you got more than that.
47:44No, we cater for everyone, and Coleman was on it, and he was amazing, and we became friends,
47:49and he's just a gorgeous human being.
47:50I love your mum on it because she's so unimpressed by the celebrities you have on.
47:53She says, like, she goes, not another actor, darling.
47:56Not another actor.
47:57And they all love her.
48:00Obviously, you say things like...
48:01You're all welcome, don't worry.
48:03Oh, my God.
48:04Season 19, season 19, guys, don't worry about it.
48:07And do you get a lot of, kind of, recognition from it?
48:09Like, do people kind of recognise you as Jessie Ware?
48:12Yeah, it's funny, this one at Graham.
48:14This happened, I was at my friend Deb Hines' gig, Blood Orange.
48:18I was there, it was a very muso crowd, we were at Ali Pali, I'm there to support my mate,
48:23head nodding, you know, I think, these are my people.
48:26And this girl comes up to me, she goes, excuse me, do you do that podcast?
48:29And I was like, yeah.
48:30And she went, are you Lenny Ware?
48:31And I went, oh, God.
48:33No, I'm critically acclaimed, five albums in, lady.
48:39No, I kind of love it.
48:40No, I'm not 17, I'm not saying age, sorry, mum, no.
48:43I'm not my mother.
48:45She looks amazing, she's fabulous, but no, it's brilliant.
48:48It's humbling.
48:50Well, listen, thank you very much for that performance,
48:53and we can't wait to hear the rest of the album.
