The Canadian horizon, once thought invulnerable, now faces a gauntlet of 21st-century threats: hypersonic cruise missiles, stealthy drone swarms, and high-velocity projectiles. To reclaim our skies, the Ground-Based Air Defense (GBAD) programme has emerged as a strategic imperative, a $500 million to $1 billion CAD effort to erect a modern dome of protection over our forces and critical infrastructure. With implementation slated for 2026 and initial deliveries expected by 2027, the clock is ticking for the Canadian Army to transition from vulnerability to dominance. This is the forging of a steel sentinel for the True North, a vital commitment to our national sovereignty and the collective security of our allies in an increasingly volatile world.
These are the manufacturers that Canada could potentially select under the GBAD program:
1. Diehl Defense with IRIS-T SLM
2. MBDA with CAMM
3. Kongsberg Defense & Aerospace / Raytheon with NASAMS
4. Lockheed Martin with PAC-3 MSE
5. General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems
