Team bookings are now open for the 2026 Dragon Boat Race along the river Tyne.
Transcript
00:00Every year the River Tyne comes alive with colour, rhythm and excitement.
00:05As teams compete in Newcastle's Dragon Boat Race.
00:08Organised by anyone, this charity challenge...
00:10...sees groups of between 11 and 16 paddlers, guided by a drummer...
00:15...racing in Dragon themed boats along the quayside between the Tyne Bridge and the Millennium.
00:20Anyone's Newcastle Dragon Boat Race is coming back on the 26th of September this year.
00:25We're really excited about it, it's a fantastic event which takes over the whole of the quayside.
00:30So not only does it activate the land, it's also activating the water.
00:33Hundreds and hundreds of people turn up.
00:35To participate, they all take a boat.
00:37There's 11 to 16 rowers and one drummer in each...
00:40...boat and they all get to take turns to race it out on the water and to battle...
00:45...be anyone's Dragon Boat Race champion for 2026 and it's going to be a really great day.
00:49We've got loads of...
00:50...stuff also happening on the land side as well for visitors.
00:55And spectators to enjoy as well.
00:57There'll be crafts, there'll be activities, face paint and all that.
01:00...type of thing.
01:01Loads of stuff.
01:02So last year I think it attracted over 10,000 people on the day.
01:04So it's a...
01:05...brilliant atmosphere on the day.
01:07So on the day we get a lot of corporate businesses...
01:10...to taking part, taking boats which is really nice to see bringing...
01:13...bringing different groups and companies together on...
01:15...the day.
01:16We're also supporting the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation this year...
01:18...which is really important for us to...
01:20...to support a local charity.
01:21And I think it's a really nice way to get the local community...
01:25...connected with charities too.
01:26Especially really important ones like the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation.
01:29They are...
01:30...currently raising £10 million to develop a new research centre...
01:33...based in the North East as well which is another...
01:35...project that's going to contribute to the local community too...
01:37...in a really great way.
01:38The event is more...
01:40...than just a race.
01:41It's designed to bring the community together...
01:43...and to raise funds for charity...
01:45...with previous years drawing thousands of spectators.
01:48So it started off as a relatively...
01:50...small event with a couple of teams racing on the water...
01:52...and now it's evolved to it being the biggest event we've ever had.
01:55There's over 28 teams taking part.
01:57Anyone can participate in the race...
01:59...as long as...
02:00...you've got a boat of enough people...
02:02...it's fine.
02:03It's a really really fun day.
02:04It gets quite competitive.
02:05I think on the first race...
02:06...people are a little bit weary on the water...
02:08...but by the end of the day...
02:09...people...
02:10...are going really hard on that water.
02:12So it's really fun to see all the teams kind of...
02:15...competing against each other.
02:17It's just really fun.
02:18So we're really trying...
02:20...leaning to the Chinese aspects of the Dragon Boat race...
02:23...so we have lots of activity...
02:25...on land.
02:26So we'll have some nice Chinese-based crafts...
02:28...for children and families to get involved in.
02:30We'll have some face paint in...
02:32...loads of different stuff.
02:33We normally have like a little competitive...
02:35...activity as well on the land side...
02:37...that the public and teams can get involved in.
02:39Just so there's...
02:40...absolutely loads to do...
02:41...and you can make a real day out of it as well.
02:44The Dragon Boat race...
02:45...is a highlight in Newcastle's calendar...
02:47...because it combines sports...
02:49...teamwork...
02:50...charity...
02:50...and community in a single day.
02:52It's a vivid reminder of the city's vibrant spirit...
02:55...where everyone can play a part...
02:56...on land...
02:57...or on the river.
03:00...and we all have to do.
03:01...is now.
03:02We're finished.
03:03Let's get back to the...
03:04...and finally, here we go.
03:05We did need to go back to the...
03:06...we decided to add our lives.
03:07...that it takes all the phases of seed.
03:08...and...
03:09...what they did...
03:10...what was that you think the suggests...
03:11...of the windows...
03:12...we went to the chimney,
03:14...by the doors...
03:15...to the doors...
03:16...and...
03:17...not the windows where you...
03:19...and...
03:20...what the doors...
03:21...and...
03:22...not the doors...
03:23...and the doors...
03:25...and...
03:26...it...
03:27...to the doors.
