00:45As global trade becomes increasingly entangled with geopolitics, the EU is
00:50being forced to rethink what its economic openness is for, growth, or a situation
00:55of strategic power, with the United States becoming a less reliable partner, and China
01:00ever more dominant competitor, trade is no longer just about lowering tariffs, but about
01:05securing supply chains, influence, and autonomy.
01:10With India, renewed momentum on a deal with Mercosur, and outreach to Indo-Pacific
01:15partners, reflect this shift.
01:18Supporters say these trade deals secure your
01:20Europe's place in a fragmented global economy.
01:23Critics fear they hurt farmers.
01:25weaken environmental standards, and erode public trust.
01:30Can the EU use its standards as leverage rather than compromise them for access and influence?
01:35Or will internal divisions reduce it to a large market, reacting to decisions
01:40made elsewhere?
01:41The questions we hope to pose to our contenders.
01:45Let's meet them.
01:46Kieran Malouli, an Irish MEP and
01:50a member of the Renew Europe Group.
01:52He is a Vice-Chair of the Special Committee on Housing and
01:55and a member of the Committee on Regional Development.
01:58Before becoming an MEP, he worked
02:00as a journalist for over three decades.
02:02He has also been a consistent critic of the EU Mercosur.
02:05Trade Agreement, arguing that in its current form it poses significant risks to
02:10European farmers, food standards and public health.
02:13The Mercosur Trade Deal
02:15will do nothing of substance for the non-agricultural sector in Europe, he said.
02:20Jürgen Warborn, a Swedish MEP and a member of the
02:25European People's Party Group.
02:27He serves on the Committee on International Trade.
02:30where he has played a prominent role in shaping the European Parliament's trade policy agenda.
02:35His work focuses on strengthening the EU's competitiveness, expanding international trade
02:40and supporting open markets.
02:42On the Mercosur deal, he said.
02:45We owe citizens facts, not fear.
02:48The safeguards in this agreement are
02:50stronger than in any previous EU trade deal.
02:55Jürgen Warborn, welcome to their ring.
02:58The idea here is to give our
03:00viewers a glimpse of what your debates are like inside the hemicycle.
03:03So I hope you feel right.
03:05Kieran Mullooly, let's start with you.
03:07334 members of the European
03:10Parliament voted in favour of referring the EU Mercosur Deal to the European Court of
03:15Justice.
03:16You were one of them.
03:17Why do you dislike this deal so much?
03:19Well, I suppose, firstly,
03:20that issue on that vote last week wasn't entirely just on the Mercosur issue.
03:23It was on the issue of what were there.
03:25Therefore, as a parliament, we're there, as you know, to co-legislate and also to be the...
03:30They'd be there to scrutinise trade deals as well.
03:32So effectively, what we were asking for last week was just one...
03:35One thing at the moment, a legal referral.
03:37We want our top courts in Europe to look at the issues, particularly look at that...
03:40balancing mechanism.
03:41It's something new in terms of the parliament over the last 30 years.
03:45And as we know, the European Court of Justice moves very slowly.
03:48So we could be looking at perhaps...
03:50Two more years before they finish their work.
03:53And 324...
03:55Members of the European Parliament disagreed with this and they voted against referring
03:59the deal to the...
04:00The European Court of Justice.
04:01Tell you why you like the deal so much.
04:03I think the viewers saw...
04:05That China is now pressing us on one part and US on...
04:10On the other parts.
04:11From a geopolitical standpoint, this is a good deal.
04:14From an economic...
04:15From an economic standpoint, this is a good deal.
04:17It is creating more jobs in Europe, so we need it.
04:20As soon as possible.
04:21And...
04:22You mentioned one of the issues...
04:25That made you want to send it for a legal check.
04:28But that is not really true.
04:30That the rebalancing mechanism...
04:32It's covered for within the agreement.
04:34There is...
04:35No issue there.
04:36And there is a potentiality now that the deal could be provisionally...
04:40Implemented.
04:41That's what we need now because...
04:42How would you feel about that if the Commission already...
04:45I have a major problem.
04:46I have a major problem.
04:47Just to stick with the vote this week...
04:50The majority of our MEPs in all around Europe...
04:53Have felt that this issue needs to be...
04:55preferred.
04:56It needs to be looked at in depth.
04:57Remember...
04:58And...
04:59Right across Europe...
05:00Take tons of...
05:00Gracias por ver el video.
05:05Gracias por ver el video.
05:10Gracias por ver el video.
05:15Gracias por ver el video.
05:17Gracias por ver el video.
05:19Gracias.
05:56No, I haven't, but I've looked at the precedence.
06:00I've looked at the precedence that's sort of been suggested as precedence.
06:02In the precedence cases, there were previous trade...
06:05There's no previous trade agreements with the European Union.
06:06There's no previous trade agreement with regard to the Mercosur countries,
06:09and in those circumstances...
06:10It's in order that we do this.
06:11We haven't used it before.
06:12I agree with that.
06:13But it's also within all the...
06:15W2 rules, and since it's in the agreement, which you obviously have...
06:20I haven't read, you still voted to send it for legal checks.
06:23Because I represent my country, the industry in my country,
06:26the same way as the French in Bordeaux and...
06:28Paris and Warsaw say, we want a legal review of this agreement.
06:32What are you afraid of, Jürgen?
06:33What are you afraid of?
06:33That it will not come back at all?
06:36What are you afraid of?
06:38What are your fears?
06:38I'm afraid of losing economic development.
06:42I'm through the...
06:43I'm afraid of losing jobs in Europe.
06:45I'm afraid of the small business owners.
06:48I'm afraid of all that growth that Europe needs in this moment.
06:52My issue would...
06:53One of the big issues I have with this deal is the scale of it.
06:56It's overrated.
06:57It's overstated.
06:58I'm pro-trade.
06:59I'm in favour of the EU-India trade agreement.
07:01I was cheering yesterday morning.
07:03Why?
07:04Because of the scale of it.
07:05We're talking about a country with 1.5 billion people.
07:08As opposed to Mercosur with 300 million people.
07:11We're talking about a country with limited trade opportunities.
07:13As opposed to India, which has shown a willingness to trade.
07:16These are totally different situations.
07:18You're afraid they won't come back.
07:20The scale is not there, Jürgen.
07:21I'm not really worried.
07:23Oh, the scale.
07:23The scale is definitely there.
07:25It's 270 million consumers.
07:28And the Mercosur comes here.
07:29A million and a half...
07:30No, but I'd like to have both.
07:31I'd like to have both.
07:33We have...
07:33We have the US pressing us with tariffs.
07:35We have China pressing us with subsidies.
07:37And you are choosing...
07:38One agreement, I'm choosing two.
07:41And you say, well, it's not enough growth.
07:43But it's still growth.
07:44And, Ciarán, are you not worried about the EU's relevance on the global stage?
07:48I'm...
07:48EU has to be relevant.
07:50We have to do trade deals.
07:51But I want to...
07:52But by delaying the seal, we're...
07:53I want to trade where countries may.
07:55I want to trade with countries that are not cutting down the rainforest.
07:58I want to trade with countries that do not have a major issue with regard to food quality
08:02and food safety.
08:02I want to...
08:03Why did you not read the fine print of the safeguards?
08:05Don't talk to me about safeguards.
08:07We really discussed safeguards.
08:08Let's talk about the safeguards.
08:10In a European context, let's look at the safeguards.
08:13We've had tremendous agreements in this House going over the last number of years.
08:16Do you remember the EU-Israel trade agreement?
08:18We had a marvellous safeguard in Article 2 which said if any of the parties were particularly
08:22guilty in terms of...
08:23of breach of human rights, there was going to be a problem.
08:27I wonder, has Israel actually breached that?
08:28Do most people in the UN think they have?
08:30Have you seen the safeguard cut in?
08:32Have we suspended the agreement, Jürgen?
08:33Why haven't we suspended...
08:34That was a safeguard.
08:35It was never implemented.
08:37What happened to that safeguard?
08:37Are you mindful of...
08:38It's the strongest safeguards in any trade agreement.
08:43It's not been stronger for any.
08:47Okay?
08:48So, there is a 5% if the...
08:53Price increases by more than 5% and the volume increases.
08:58Price is by more than 5% farmers are protected.
09:01And that's not only the protection from...
09:03In what period of time will they be protected?
09:04It's also the tariff rate quotas.
09:06Who will ring the bell?
09:06When will they be protected next year?
09:08This year?
09:09You have three...
09:10Well, that's also the thing.
09:13This is...
09:13It's unprecedented when it comes to the safeguards, how fast they will kick in.
09:18So, nobody knows is the answer.
09:20It's in 25, 21 days.
09:22Yeah, well, nobody knows.
09:22It's also in the...
09:23It's on...
09:23Unlimited import quotas on sensitive products does not satisfy you.
09:27We know.
09:28Ursula von der Rijn, she sat down, she met with the farmers on the sidelines of that EU summit.
09:33The...
09:33That took place before Christmas.
09:34Was that not enough?
09:35Maeve, when I came to this parliament on the very first week, I met Ursula von der Rijn.
09:38And I raised this issue on day one.
09:40And in that meeting in parliament in Strasbourg, she said to me...
09:43But, Ciarán, we are working with the farmers in Brazil.
09:46Things are going to be different.
09:48They are...
09:48We are already improving the situation.
09:50And yet, in my country, Member State, in the last six months...
09:53We've seen Brazilian meat come in with legal growth promoters with...
09:58Carcinogenic products, and not just come in, but go straight into the food chain and be...
10:03She told me this was not going to happen again.
10:06It did happen.
10:06How can we trust...
10:07And this, of course...
10:08It's been a massive scandal and covered a lot in the last couple of weeks in Ireland.
10:11These are the genuine concerns...
10:13Yes.
10:13Communities in Ireland and France and Greece, in fact, there have been farmers out protesting.
10:17So how do you address those concerns?
10:18And viewers here today who are concerned.
10:20You know, I think that is a valid argument.
10:23Actually, one of your first valid arguments, which is also why...
10:28The Commission has acted on this and the standards they are there, no matter...
10:33Whether the Mercosur Trade Agreement or not, they will be there.
10:37It will not change.
10:38With the agreement, we will still have our standards.
10:40There will still be imports of products from the Mercosur Trade Agreement.
10:43But we will lose out on the opportunities.
10:46How do we then...
10:48And make sure that consumers, animal welfare and plant protection...
10:53Is there.
10:54We do checks.
10:55More checks.
10:56And, of course, these...
10:58And much...
10:58Hang on.
10:59These are not working.
11:00Hang on, hang on.
11:01Unfortunately, they are not working.
11:02And the 6.3 billion...
11:03No, but what...
11:03There is earmarked as well for farmers in the next budget.
11:05And climate control and all sorts of other issues that...
11:08We will have to read the fine print, of course, but...
11:10Could I just say...
11:11No, let me stop you there, because actually we're just getting...
11:13Warmed up here and it's time to take the gloves off.
11:18So now you both have the opportunity to kick off with your own questions, so...
11:23I will stay quiet for a minute.
11:24Kiran, you go ahead, please, with your first question.
11:26Yeah, I mean, I want to ask Juergen up straight...
11:28If he knows what antimicrobial resistance is in terms of medical situation.
11:33It's basically a medical condition which occurs after the overuse of antibiotics.
11:38It's something that affects you and me.
11:40Forget about the animals for the moment.
11:41It's you and me.
11:42Your kids, your family...
11:43And if in an emergency situation you go into hospital, you require antibiotics...
11:48If you've been exposed to more antibiotics than you knew in the course of your life, you're
11:52in big trouble.
11:53If the radio media is coming in, the end of the day, we know antibiotics are in it.
11:56We've seen it.
11:57In my country we've had an exposure...
11:58Jose, with regard to...
11:59Right across Brazil.
12:00It's still going on.
12:01From your source...
12:02So the question is very straightforward.
12:03At the end of the day, what price do you put on the safety of your family?
12:08Thank you.
12:08So the meat is coming in, no matter with the Mercosur agreement or not.
12:13And what happens if we have the Mercosur agreement is that we increase...
12:18the checks.
12:19In fact, we will do 50% more checks in...
12:23In the Mercosur countries, we will do 33% more checks at the board...
12:28of the European borders and there will be a task force to...
12:33improve the border efficiency.
12:35So actually, for health...
12:38For people, and for animals, and for the plants, there will be more checks.
12:43with the Mercosur agreement than without the argument.
12:46You can guarantee this?
12:47You can guarantee this?
12:48Yes.
12:49Because on the 25th of September last year, they came into Ireland.
12:51I've asked the Commission since then...
12:53about the checks.
12:54Where the meat came from?
12:55Where it went to?
12:56The Commission doesn't know.
12:58They still don't know.
12:59Five months later...
13:00So you're not reassured by what Jorgen said?
13:01Five months later...
13:02That's a fact.
13:03We can...
13:03You can ask...
13:04You can ask anybody in the Parliament next week...
13:05When we ask the Commissioner, where did it come from?
13:07Where did it go?
13:08The checks...
13:08But are your voters not excited about cheaper stakes?
13:10Fortunately, the EU...
13:11One of the fantastic things about the EU is the EU...
13:13is the focus on quality and health over the years.
13:16Our Irish consumer...
13:18Our Irish consumer wants to see the continuation of proper quality...
13:21and safe food.
13:22Quality over quantity.
13:23That's the big issue.
13:23That's the big issue for me.
13:24So do I.
13:25The food and your family and my family...
13:26We can be sure of that reason.
13:27Your opportunity tonight to pose your first question...
13:28please to Kieran Mululi.
13:29We have US and China pressing us from two parts.
13:32It's been...
13:33very...
13:34very hard with US lately...
13:35and we need more trade agreements.
13:38India.
13:39It's very good that you are pro the Indian one...
13:42and we have several...
13:43several other.
13:44It's the Chile one.
13:45I guess you voted for as well.
13:46Why do...
13:47Why do you...
13:48choose not to have the growth...
13:50that comes with the Mercosur agreement?
13:53You say it's too small...
13:54but it's still growth.
13:55It's still more jobs...
13:56for...
13:58for European businesses.
13:59It supports small and medium-sized businesses.
14:03We need growth in Europe.
14:04So why can you not help with...
14:07with...
14:08providing that growth?
14:09It's a fair question.
14:10The geopolitical situation has been one of the...
14:12the big...
14:13issues as I joined the parliament.
14:14Every week there's a different agenda.
14:16And usually driven by the United States or other...
14:18otherwise.
14:19But the point is...
14:20you're right.
14:21We need to do more trade.
14:22But for me as an ABP...
14:23I have to balance.
14:23on one side...
14:24the better good of the EU...
14:25and on the other side...
14:26the better good of the economy of...
14:28the EU.
14:29And when the people of France...
14:30and the people of Poland...
14:31the people of Austria...
14:32Ireland...
14:33and even Belgium...
14:33on this...
14:34had come in and said...
14:35at the end of the day...
14:36we have more to lose...
14:37in a deal...
14:38of this...
14:38size...
14:39because it's so small.
14:40That's what they're saying to me.
14:41Even though I don't know if the French economy...
14:42should be a good example.
14:43Well...
14:44nevertheless...
14:45the French are united on this.
14:46We've seen it in the Parliament.
14:47I mean...
14:48127...
14:48MEPs can be wrong.
14:49Can they all be wrong, Jörgen?
14:50Yes.
14:51They can all be wrong.
14:52I'm afraid that's a bit of a...
14:53statement about you and democracy.
14:54Because at the end of the day...
14:55they represent left, right and middle.
14:57Ciarán Mullooly...
14:58there's a chance for another question there.
14:59Are you in favour...
15:00of a deal...
15:01which at the end of the day...
15:02continues...
15:03to leave workers in Brazil...
15:04on an average monthly salary...
15:06of just €1,000.
15:08It's doing nothing for trade.
15:09How could you support that?
15:10Nothing for employees and workers in Brazil.
15:12You're like...
15:13So...
15:14If we vote down the Mercosur trade agreement...
15:18How will it help the workers in Brazil?
15:22How will it help...
15:23the workers in...
15:25in Europe?
15:26In Ireland?
15:27It will be the opposite.
15:28And we spoke about it.
15:29It's about growth.
15:30Europe is facing a...
15:33huge growth problem.
15:34And it's good...
15:35that the commission...
15:36is now...
15:37pushing...
15:38to change this position.
15:39We have the Draga report.
15:40We need to do a lot of things.
15:42The rest of the world...
15:43is growing faster...
15:44than Europe.
15:45And that's why...
15:46we need to tap into...
15:48that growth.
15:49And we do that...
15:50with the trade agreements.
15:51But you decide...
15:52that you don't...
15:53do not want to tap into...
15:54that growth.
15:55To 270 million consumers.
15:58that can sell the cars...
15:59that can sell the cars...
16:00that can sell the cars...
16:01the pharmaceuticals...
16:02I also look at the...
16:03but the trade unions...
16:04tell us that...
16:05and actually I misquoted...
16:06500 euros per month...
16:07is the average one...
16:08the top 10%...
16:09are on 1200 euros per month.
16:10That's today.
16:11That's today.
16:12That has been the way...
16:13for some...
16:13all the time...
16:14and you know that.
16:15So...
16:16and...
16:17with an agreement...
16:18another point...
16:19that complicates this matter...
16:20just to complicate...
16:21to sell cars...
16:22into this...
16:23this community.
16:24How many of these workers...
16:25are going to be able...
16:26to afford a Volvo car?
16:26At that...
16:27at that wage?
16:28At that salary?
16:29Never.
16:30Allow Mr. Worman to answer.
16:31No...
16:31much more...
16:32of the workers...
16:33will afford it...
16:34if we have...
16:35the Mercosur agreement.
16:36because...
16:37economic development...
16:38will increase...
16:39with the agreement.
16:40That's what trade...
16:41does.
16:42Actually...
16:43the European export...
16:44will grow...
16:45by 39%.
16:46That's a huge...

19:07a balance what Europe has
19:09and the scale of what's possible
19:10and so now the
19:12workforce is they can afford
19:14to buy a Volvo you mean in India
19:17and the Irish can afford to buy
19:19another car in Ireland with the
19:20whiskey sales increase it's a win-win
19:22it's a win-win
19:22which will happen in Mercosur as well
19:24well not because of the scale
19:26I'm quite genuine about that
19:27it doesn't have the scale
19:28if you look say in Ireland at the moment
19:30we've got half a billion sales
19:32already into India in terms of whiskey
19:34already before we start
19:35whereas the Mercosur export
19:37are tiny from an Irish perspective
19:39270 million consumers
19:40I think the viewers can
19:42assess that
19:431.5
19:441.4
19:44we will continue discussing it
19:46in one minute
19:46but just
19:47we must take a short break here
19:49on The Ring
19:49but stay with us
19:50because we'll be back very soon
19:51with some more
19:52political punch from the parliament
19:57you
20:02Welcome back to The Ring, Uri News' weekly debating show here.
20:07Broadcasting from the Parliament in Brussels. I'm joined by MEP's Ciaran Mullooly.
20:12And the idea here is to bring the Parliament debates to your sofa. So, what about...
20:17Well, according to a recent Eurobarometer, what do Europeans think of the EU?
20:22Well, 77% support the EU's common trade policy.
20:2783% say that the EU should strengthen its economic independence...
20:32And diversify its trade relations. But, at least 75%...
20:37...of citizens agree that agricultural imports should only ever enter the EU.
20:42The European Union, if they comply with the EU's environmental, animal welfare and...
20:47...labour standards. Are you surprised there?
20:50No, not a bit. I'm pro-trade.
20:52And I'm the person who says we've got to make these deals and make sure they're the right deals.
20:56But the key one is the last...
20:57...the 75%. At the end of the day, people want to have safe food. And if the safeguards...
21:02...are to mean anything, then they've got to come back in front of Parliament. We start looking at them again. We've got to find out...
21:07...where did the meat come from last September in Ireland? Nobody knows. It's still a mystery. We cannot go forward...
21:12...until we have clear safeguards on these issues.
21:14Jorgen, your reaction there to that data?
21:17I'm not surprised at all. Well, if I am surprised, it's rather that the last...
21:22...number isn't higher because, of course, we are all concerned with food safety.
21:27And my point is that with the Mercosur agreement, food safety will actually...
21:32...increase. We will have more checks, 50% more checks in the Mercosur countries.
21:3753% more checks at our border. A task force of increasing efficiently. If...
21:42...so, I guess that means that we will find the...
21:47...meat or other products that are not good for us. So, why is the...
21:52...the Mercosur deal so toxic then? Is there a communications issue here?
21:55Have you been miscommunicating this deal?
21:57And the benefits, perhaps?
21:58I think so. And, you know, I also admit that there are sensitive products.
22:02For the agriculture sector as a whole, it's huge potential.
22:07For dairy, for wine, for a lot of different products, but for some products.
22:12They are sensitive. It's beef, it's poultry, it's sugar, it's a few others.
22:17But here, the Commission has really been clever in negotiating it. It's tariff rate quotas, meaning...
22:22...the volumes are small. Relatively small. 1.5% maximum.
22:27...in consumption of the European consumption. For beef. One steak per...
22:32...on opt-in standard. On opt-in day. One steak...
22:34...and then it grows, and then it grows, and then it grows. That's what we do. No, it doesn't.
22:37It's in the agreement. So it's one steak per day. Over a period of decades.
22:40And then, with the quotas, then you...
22:42...you have the safeguards, meaning that prices cannot decrease too much, then tariff...
22:47...kicks in. And there is also an insurance policy in terms of money.
22:51I think the good news...
22:52...on the vote last week is that Europe is changing its mind about the entire America's ordeal now.
22:56We've...
22:57I haven't seen...
22:58Who is?
22:59I was told that...
23:00Who in Europe? I haven't seen the Commission President change your mind.
23:01I think social...
23:02To be very clear about it...
23:03...these statistics says something else.
23:04To be very clear about it, when we voted on...
23:06But just who has changed their mind...
23:07I'm really curious...
23:08Can I answer the question?
23:09Last year when we had a vote, we had 10, 11 social democrats...
23:12...who abstained.
23:13This week they voted in favour of the legal agreement.
23:15I believe they'll vote in...
23:17...to knock down Mercosur.
23:18That's who's changed their mind.
23:19That's why we won this week, by the way.
23:21It wasn't so the left put them...
23:22...motion for it.
23:23The right were involved.
23:24But at the end of the day, it was social democrats from Romania and...
23:27Bulgaria that changed their mind in this situation...
23:29...and that's happening right across the border with regard to Mercosur.
23:31But it's...
23:32It's very political.
23:33Because of the safety issues.
23:34It's very political too.
23:35At the end of the day, it's about food quality.
23:36It's about politics...
23:37You asked the question, what did the commission do wrong?
23:39The commission failed to recognise the cultural problem in Brazil.
23:42This is an examination that went over 3,000 kilometres...
23:45...over 14...
23:46You disagree.
23:47It's right across the border.
23:48It's right across the border.
23:49You can't change that overnight.
23:50You can't.
23:51Okay, let's just hear it from you.
23:52Tyrann is putting forward...
23:52...great arguments for provisional application actually.
23:56Meaning that...
23:57The Mercosur agreement should now start to be in force as soon as possible.
24:02Because the vote last week, you didn't...
24:07You didn't read the agreement, but you still voted to send it for legal checks.
24:12Meaning that what you are really against is the Mercosur agreement.
24:16And that's what...
24:17That's why it was a delaying process from you and some colleagues.
24:22But...
24:22But we cannot afford to delay the process.
24:24We have been negotiating this for 25 years.
24:2625...
24:27And now we need to put it into force.
24:29And I think...
24:30Forget about 250.
24:31Not happening.
24:32No, no, no.
24:33We do more checks.
24:34So when we put it into action, then...
24:37Export will grow.
24:38Export will grow.
24:39Jobs will grow.
24:40And that will be very good for you.
24:42That's the trees in the Amazon.
24:43You seem to have forgotten that issue.
24:44And I'm sure your Swedish viewers are interested in that as well.
24:47We heard...
24:47At Christmas...
24:48They haven't.
24:49We heard at Christmas...
24:50That's why we have...
24:51That's why we had...
24:52The biggest soil producers in Brazil are going...
24:52¡Suscríbete al canal!
24:57No, no, no.
24:58They have breached an agreement.
24:59Once again.
25:00They have breached an agreement and they're going back into the rainforest.
25:02We're going to see more trees cut than ever before.
25:05And you're saying that's fine.
25:07We're going to go ahead and...
25:07I want to continue quizzing you.
25:09We're going to have two years to go ahead.
25:10So haven't we the EOD for...
25:12So that's the view from...
25:13You didn't read the agreement.
25:15That is the view from Ciarán Malooly and Jorgen Varburn.
25:17Now it is time, though, to move on to our...
25:20Fifth and final round.
25:22Are you ready?
25:22So I'm going to ask...
25:27Make our MEPs a set of questions.
25:29And you only can answer with a yes or no.
25:31Is that doable?
25:33Debatable.
25:34Debatable.
25:34Not easy at all.
25:36Is Ursula von...
25:37Underline a good leader.
25:38Ciarán, yes or no?
25:39No.
25:40Yes.
25:40Do you like that Brussels trades...
25:42On behalf of the 27, Ciarán?
25:44Yes, in key areas.
25:45Yes.
25:47Is...
25:47Is globalisation a good thing, Jorgen?
25:50Yes.
25:51Yes, in...
25:52Controlled and regulated.
25:53Ciarán, is the EU relevant on the world stage now in 2026?
25:57Yes.
25:57This is the answer, and I'm a big believer in that.
25:59But we have to be even more relevant and not reacting to the US and other parts.
26:02Yes, and with the Mercosur agreement, even more so.
26:06Was it a mistake?
26:07To sign the EU-US trade deal back in Scotland, back in July.
26:12No.
26:13Yes, because we were bullied.
26:15On that Sunday in July, we were...
26:17The President of the Commission was bullied into submission, not the circumstances...
26:20Could I maybe comment...
26:21Should that deal be read?
26:22Clarified yes or no?
26:23I think it should stay suspended until we clarify exactly what's going on in the...
26:27United States.
26:27We need that deal.
26:29We need it concretely.
26:30We thought we had it.
26:30Struggling there with the yes or no, Mr. Miller.
26:32We need more predictability.
26:34I say more.
26:34We cannot create a lot of...
26:36We cannot create...
26:37Absolutely stable situation for businesses at the moment.
26:40So should the deal be ratified?
26:41It should, because it's...
26:42It creates more predictability than today.
26:44Final question, Mr. Miller.
26:45Did you agree with anything that...
26:47Jürgen Varbon said today?
26:48Oh, I certainly did.
26:49I mean, we...
26:49The overall trade...
26:51Jürgen is right.
26:52We...
26:52I need to do the big deals.
26:53That's why I'm happy with India.
26:55But it all comes down at the end of the day for me to a personal...
26:57choice.
26:58Jürgen, would you be happy with your family eating Brazilian meat tomorrow?
27:01And what about you...
27:02Yes, yes, absolutely.
27:04I do eat Brazilian meat and Irish meat.
27:07Even though you...
27:07You have no idea where it came from?
27:08I have no problems with that.
27:09And just a final point with you.
27:09Did you agree with anything Kira Malouli said here today?
27:12Yes, I...
27:12I think it is very good that Kira is supportive of the Indian...
27:16You indeed, yes.
27:17The agreement with India.
27:19We need that.
27:20We need more trade agreements in general.
27:22Okay, okay.
27:22What a lively debate.
27:23I think we've given our viewers a real glimpse of what it's like inside the heated hemicycle.
27:27Thank you so much, Jürgen Vorborn and Kira Malouli for being our guests.
27:31It was great to hear your views.
27:32And we'd also like to hear yours.
