BACP launch new 'no more stiff upper lip' campaign, backed by Lorraine Pascale and Rankin, to encourage women in midlife to seek therapy and support.It comes after two-thirds of women over 50 have struggled with their mental wellbeing, with 87% keeping it hidden, according to new research.

00:00the first session I just cried couldn't speak it was just
00:05like so emotional but then gradually I realized I had been all my life sort of being
00:10people-pleasing and trying to be in control and then when things went wrong
00:15I was blaming myself but what I came to realize through the therapy
00:20is that I am not responsible for other people's behavior
00:25and I can't control them
00:27My foray into
00:30counselling came following the death of my
00:35husband at 63 and suddenly
00:40he wasn't there
00:42I needed to talk
00:44the fact is that
00:45approaching therapy you think it's about one thing and then you end up
00:50travelling
00:51a whole host of other things
00:53I reached out for
00:55mental health in relation to burnout and workplace stress and to the point where
00:59and I didn't
01:00feel myself
01:01what therapy did for me was give me somewhere to put
01:05some of those thoughts and feelings and emotions that I didn't want to burden other
01:10people with at the time and it was just a safe space to put some stuff and work it through
01:15Having therapy helped me redefine
01:20my identity
01:21it helped me rebuild my confidence
01:24it helped me
01:25to make sense of my place in the world
01:30I think more women over 50 don't seek out therapy because there's a pressure to just get on with it
01:35get it done
01:36keep going
01:37and that's why this campaign is so important
01:40we don't want them to keep a stiff upper lip
01:42we want them to talk
01:44so anyone can
01:45call themselves a therapist
01:46so it's really important to find a therapist that's registered with the BACP
01:50or the Professional Standards Authority Accredited Register
01:53and make sure that you're going with someone
01:55that has the right qualifications
