00:00United States next, where thousands of power outages have been reported following a deadly
00:05winter storm that brought a crippling ice to the south and deep snow to the country's northeast.
00:11Temperatures forecast to plunge well below freezing this Tuesday in areas where the ice
00:16storm did the worst damage. Officials in certain parts of the U.S. warning it could take up to a
00:22week for power to be restored. For more on the situation from New York, here's our correspondent
00:28Jessica LeMazurier reporting. This was New York's biggest winter storm in about half a decade. It
00:35dropped more than a foot of snow in the city and even more than that out here in the northern suburbs,
00:41about 45 centimetres. It's taking me forever to dig my car out of the snow. Thousands of flights
00:49were cancelled over the weekend. The total quickly approached a record 12,000 cancellations. That's
00:55more than we saw during the height of the Covid pandemic shutdown. Well, the disruptions have
01:00left thousands of travel plans in limbo. There were also a lot of train and subway delays and the roads
01:07are very dangerous due to ice. Now, DoorDash Food Delivery Service suspended its operations for well
01:13over a day. In the city, public school kids have been allowed to stay home, but they're taking classes
01:18virtually. Here in the suburbs, kids had a real snow day so they could enjoy this record snowfall,
01:24with some of them even donning their skis to ski down some local slopes. Well, hundreds of thousands
01:31of people have lost power in other parts of the U.S., in the Carolinas and Tennessee. Here in New York,
01:38however, it seems that most people still have power, although we are expecting this snow to remain
01:42due to freezing temperatures for the rest of the week. It's currently about minus five and we'll be
01:48seeing lows of about minus 16 over the course of this week.
