00:00Driving sleepy can be just as bad as driving drunk.
00:04Science Alert reports about 20% of all vehicle crashes are caused by fatigue.
00:09A new study published in Nature and Science of Sleep found if you had less than five hours of sleep the night before,
00:15you are just as likely to have a crash as if you were over the alcohol limit.
00:20According to the Sleep Foundation, after 20 hours of being awake,
00:24drowsy drivers are impaired on a level equatable to a 0.08% blood alcohol content.
00:31Awake for 24 hours? Impairment is the same as a 0.1% alcohol content level.
00:37Science Alert looked at 61 unique studies and found that having only four to five hours of sleep in the previous 24 hours
00:44doubles the risk of a car crash.
00:47It's the same as when drivers have a blood alcohol content of 0.05%, so get that shut-eye.
00:53Just because you haven't had a drink, driving fatigued can sometimes be just as bad or worse than driving after drinking.
