00:00Posture check. Is your back straight right now, or are you slouching?
00:04If you're like me, you've slouched for most of your life,
00:06but are now making a constant effort to correct and realign yourself.
00:10But is standing up straight as beneficial as we've always been told,
00:13or just rumors told by our parents to keep us in line?
00:16Pun very much intended.
00:18According to Dr. Scott Malazi, a spine surgeon,
00:21having your head centered above your pelvis and your feet is considered proper posture.
00:26Your neck and head shouldn't be slouching forward or backward.
00:28You should be up straight with your head, pelvis, and feet in alignment.
00:32While good posture results in reduced wear and tear of the spine,
00:35it doesn't mean you won't develop back issues one day.
00:38For example, you can remind yourself to stand up straight all day long,
00:41but if you're craning your neck down to use your phone all day,
00:44you are not doing your spine any favors.
00:47But according to HuffPost, there are muscle groups that you can strengthen,
00:50such as your paraspinal muscles,
00:52which surround your spine from your neck to your lower back and your core muscles.
00:56Strengthening these muscle groups means your spine has more support
00:59and you won't have to constantly remind yourself to straighten up.
01:03So it sounds beneficial to me.
01:05If not for back pain, then just to seem taller,
01:08even if it's for a few minutes at a time.
