Volodymyr Zelenskyy sets 2027 as target for Ukraine's EU accession date

According to an EU official speaking on condition of anonymity, Brussels is also floating the idea of 'gradual membership' to accelerate Ukraine's accession.

00:00Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced he wants his country to join the European Union in 2027.
00:09Zelenskyy believes that EU membership could be part of a range of international security guarantees after ending the war.
00:17Ukraine received candidate status in 2022 after the start of Russia's full-scale invasion, and accession talks officially started in 2024.
00:29But Hungary is opposed to the idea. They claim that Ukraine's accession would come with security threats and economic risks.
00:38According to an EU official knowledgeable on the accession process, a so-called gradual integration is also on the table.
00:47The official added that despite Hungary's veto, Ukraine made significant progress and completed the fastest ever screening process of any EU applicant.
