Transcript
00:00Is Zac Efron canceled? Some fans seem to think so.
00:03The actor's latest hairstyle has some social media users accusing him of cultural appropriation.
00:08The Greatest Showman star debuted new dreadlocks on Instagram Thursday with the caption,
00:13"...just for fun." The post caused people online to call him out for appropriating black culture
00:19without respecting its origin or significance. The photo sparked a heated debate on social media,
00:24with Instagram comments ranging from,
00:26"...it's his hair and his body," to, "...dreadlocks have a cultural and religious significance
00:31and background, so it is not the same as straightening or dyeing hair."
00:36Twitter users continued the discussion on cultural appropriation, an accusation that's also been
00:41leveled at Justin Bieber for sporting dreadlocks, Miley Cyrus for twerking, and Kylie Jenner
00:46for her cornrows. One social media user tweeted,
00:49"...why does Zac Efron have dreads just for fun? Babe, don't do this to yourself."
00:54And another said,
00:55"...Zac Efron in dreads. I really have seen it all. What in the cultural appropriation is going on?
01:01Troy, get your nonsense head in the bloody game. Please and please."
01:05But some defended the actor, including a Twitter user who wrote,
01:08"...people really mad that Zac Efron got dreads. Dreads are universal, not just for black people.
01:13Ancient people in Babylon had dreads. Even Viking women and men had braids and dreads.
01:18Y'all need to chill." For more on this story, head to THR.com's Preda Reporter.
