A stunning reversal from the White House has sent shockwaves through Washington. The United States has dropped plans to seize Greenland—not due to lack of ambition, but because of a far greater risk for President Donald Trump: impeachment. Reports say fears of a constitutional crisis and NATO fallout forced a dramatic retreat.

Since early January, Trump and close aides have explored ways to take control of the Danish territory. But bipartisan warnings from Capitol Hill were swift and blunt. Any move without congressional approval, lawmakers said, would trigger immediate impeachment proceedings—putting the presidency itself on the line.

00:00A stunning reversal from the White House, the United States has abandoned plans to seize
00:25Greenland, not because the idea locked ambition, but because it risked something far more dangerous
00:31for President Donald Trump, impeachment. According to Reuters, the threat of congressional action
00:38forced Trump to retreat from a move that could have shattered NATO and ignited a constitutional
00:44crisis at home. Since early January, Trump and his inner circle had been actively discussing
00:51ways to take control of Greenland, the strategically vital Danish territory. But alarm bells quickly
00:57rang on Capitol Hill. Lawmakers from both parties warned the White House that any attempt to seize
01:04Greenland, especially without congressional approval, would trigger immediate impeachment
01:09proceedings. The message was blunt. Invade and the presidency is at risk. Just days ago, Trump was
01:17openly threatening tariffs on European allies as leverage, refusing to rule out the use of force.
01:23But on January 22, while attending the World Economic Forum in Davos, the president abruptly
01:30changed course. He ruled out military action, stepped back from tariff threats, and signaled that the
01:37confrontation with Denmark and NATO was on hold. After meeting NATO Secretary General Mark Ruda,
01:44Trump struck a dramatically different tone. He suggested a negotiated deal over Greenland,
01:50one that would give the U.S. access to critical minerals and support a Golden Dome missile defense
01:55system while countering Russian and Chinese influence in the Arctic. Trump called it a forever deal,
02:02claiming it would satisfy all sides and secure long-term Western interests. European diplomats say the
02:09sudden shift helped defuse what was becoming the deepest transatlantic rift in decades. Trump's
02:16earlier rhetoric, combined with tariff threats and territorial ambitions, had shaken allies already
02:22uneasy about U.S. leadership. While the dispute is far from resolved, officials say the retreat buys time to
02:29settle differences behind closed doors, without tanks, tariffs, or impeachment hearings.
02:35What are some of the elements of the Greenland concept that you can tell? There was a really a
02:47negotiation, but it's infinity. The time limit is infinity, meaning there is no time limit. It's
02:55forever. It's a year about 99 years, 50 years. It's forever. That was discussed. We can do anything we
03:06want. We could do military. We could do anything we want. And it's being negotiated. And let's see
03:12what happens. I think it'll be good. When the U.S. have pockets of sovereignty over March?
03:21We have a lot of, we have a lot of, we have a lot of great things in the deal. And don't forget,
03:27they're also good for Europe. Because you know, when we're good, they're good. And if we're not good,
03:33that's not very good for them. Because we hold it all together. We're holding it all together.
03:41Does that actually give you control of land in Greenland? Does it give U.S. control ownership of land?
03:47We can do whatever we want. We're all going to work together. And actually,
03:51NATO is going to be involved with us. We're going to be doing it in conjunction,
03:55parts of it in conjunction with data, which is really the way it should be.
03:59But did you talk about the U.S. will not have any expense? Because we're not going to have expenses.
04:05Other than building the Golden Dome, we're going to build the Golden Dome. And we'll have participation
04:11of that also. The cost of the Golden Dome, we'll have participation in that also, meaning with the
04:17expense of it. And it'll be like no other. I mean, you know, our technology is incredible.
04:22Is Denmark signed off on this? Are they on board with this concept? Is Denmark on board with this
04:27concept? I think everyone likes it. I mean, I think. I'll let you know in about two weeks.
04:32Have you spoken with Denmark about this plan? The Secretary General Mark is a great guy.
04:43He's a great guy. And he's spoken to everybody. And when you spoke with the NATO Secretary General,
04:49did you talk about U.S. military presence in Greenland? About military presence?
04:54We talked about everything. And you saw him yesterday. He was interviewed on Brent Baer.
04:58And he was very happy. He was very convinced this is a good deal for everybody.
05:03President Trump, how does your conversation go with President Valentin?
05:07We had a conversation. I've had numerous conversations on Ukraine.
05:12It'd be nice to end that war. You know, it costs us nothing. We make money. I don't want to make money,
05:17but we make money. Whereas Biden spent $350 billion stupidly, it lost a lot of money. But it's not about
05:25the money. It's about 25,000 to 30,000 soldiers a month. Mostly soldiers. A month of being killed.
05:33Do you think that the Secretary General Mark and Jared are right now on the way to Moscow,
05:42so we'll see how that works out. I had a good meeting, but I've had, you know,
05:46numerous good meetings with President Zelensky, and it doesn't seem to happen. You know, it's funny,
05:53I put out a 35-year war in a day, a 32-year war in two days. In other wars, the worst was like four
06:02days. And this one goes on and on forever. And actually, they may have been more complex.
06:09Do you think of that trilateral that the US, Russia, and Ukraine are having in Abu Dhabi,
06:15this weekend leads to a trilateral between you, Putin, and Zelensky?
06:19Look, it's all good. Any time we meet, it's good. If you don't meet, nothing's going to happen.
06:24I mean, for the first three years, nobody met. Under Biden, nobody met. And you know one thing,
06:31if you don't meet, nothing's going to happen. So we are meeting, and we'll see what happens.
06:36I hope we can save a lot of lives. And so-
06:39Mr. President, what kind of concessions does Vladimir- Mr. President, what kind of concessions
06:45does Vladimir Putin need to make at this point?
06:49He'll make concessions. Everybody's making concessions to get it done.
06:54Europe is going to be a part of it. It's got to be a part of it. Look, it's more for Europe than
06:58for me. I mean, I'm doing this more for Europe than for me. I'm doing it to save lives, number one.
07:04I'm doing it secondarily for Europe. I'm not doing it so much for the... It doesn't affect us very much.
07:10Other than the loss of lives, you know, we're not affected by this still. It's
07:16thousands of miles away. We're separated by an ocean. But I have an ability to get things done
07:23like this, and we'll see if I can get it done. I mean, we... It would never have gotten done.
07:29I thought Putin wanted the whole thing. Maybe he does, but he's not gonna... He's not gonna be going
07:33there unless we don't make a deal. We had a good meeting today with President Zelensky. I think a very good
07:39bit. What's the main holdup? What's the... What's the main holdup to getting a deal?
07:44The main holdup is the same things that have been holding it up for the last year. Look, this is a
07:51war. This is Biden's war. This isn't my war. This is a war that should have never happened. But it's
07:56complex because you have beats and bounds. You have... You have streets. You have rivers. You have
08:02everything. You know, winters and ends. So it's a little bit complicated. But I've had that in
08:07five of the other wars. You know, there are beats and bounds. It's a location. It's boundaries.
08:15And I got them done fast in days. And this one is just going on.
08:20You know, what's happened here is there were times when Putin didn't want to make a deal,
08:24times when Zelensky didn't want to make a deal. And it was like opposite times. Now,
08:30I think they both want to make a deal, but we'll find out. Could something change that makes you
08:36think that Putin and Zelensky now are serious about it? I don't have any predictions. There are no
08:41changes. I think that President Putin would like to make a deal. I think that President Zelensky would
08:48like to make a deal. What did Zelensky say today? I mean, he came all the way there to meet you.
08:55What did he say? He said he'd like to make a deal. I mean, you know, there's not much he can say.
09:03People know the parameters. It's not like, you know, we're discussing things that have been
09:08discussed for six or seven months. And he came and he said he wants to make a deal. Because I wasn't
09:14necessarily sure. I think he should want to make a deal. It's pretty tough. It's really tough on the
09:20people of Ukraine. How they live without heat, where it's 20 degrees below zero. You know,
09:29it's very cold. It's a very, that's a colder climate for the most part than Canada. But they
09:37live without heat. I asked him, I mean, how do they, how do they do that? And he gave me the answer.
09:43It's pretty amazing what they do to live. It's no way to live. Yeah. Back to back to
09:50Greenland. Can you elaborate more on just we're trying to understand what exactly the concept is
09:54here? Is the U.S. going to actually take ownership? We'll have something in two weeks.
09:59There's a good spirit to get something done. And we have to have a strong freedom. We have to have
10:06the ability to do exactly what we want to do. We have a great military. I built a great military. I did
10:13this at my first time at continuation, big continuation. I think what we did with the
10:19defense companies was very important because we need things faster. We have the best weapons in
10:25the world by far. We showed that last week with Venezuela. We have the best weapons in the world.
10:31We have to make them faster. How would be any different than the current situation? The U.S. can
10:36much different, much more detail, much more generous to the United States. It's a much more
10:42generous deal. It has to be. And we're building a golden dome and you see the way it works.
10:48That is so much better for us and for Europe to have that piece of ice covered by the golden dome.
