00:00For the past three years, it had been a familiar routine.
00:04Roger Federer in the French Open Finals and losing at the hands of Rafa Nadal.
00:08This year could have a different ending.
00:11With his arch rival out of the way, could this be the day that Roger Federer earns that historic victory?
00:17Will this be the day he finally captures the one title which has eluded him?
00:22In his way, the man who did what Federer couldn't beat Rafa Nadal here.
00:27Will Sweden's Robert Soderling play Giant Slayer once more and keep Federer from the career Grand Slam?
00:34The French Open Men's Final is next.
00:57Looks like these guys had a pretty good warm-up as they've come out firing.
01:05First miss hit from Soderling.
01:11Oh!
01:14Well, no greater strike for Federer.
01:16Could he have wished them to get a break right away?
01:19I wish the fans in New York wanted to see Bore Connors.
01:22They were booing us.
01:23That's 79 U.S. Open.
01:25I learned early, you know.
01:27And Federer backs up the break with an easy service game.
01:37Look at that shot.
01:38He's making it look awful easy right now.
01:45Toying with Soderling earlier.
01:51That's in.
01:52Oh!
01:52He didn't go for it.
01:54It was a miss hit, but it dropped on the line.
01:56And Federer starts with two breaks.
01:59But he's the only one of those guys who won all four majors on three different services.
02:08Because three of the four used to be played on...
02:10...will tell you it's been a huge difference for Soderling.
02:14Well, basically, he had his old coach for a long time.
02:17He pretty much told him what to do.
02:19And finally, ironically, the same problem Kierton had.
02:21Soderling on the board in this French Open championship.
02:41Come off that little bit.
02:43He's going to win this first set.
03:05And I respect that team.
03:06And my buddy is Chris Chelios.
03:08But I am a Ranger fan.
03:09So I just want to say that for the record.
03:11As Roger continues to dictate play here early.
03:16Slip sliding around is Soderling.
03:18He just does not look comfortable at all yet.
03:20Very unsettled.
03:36That's much needed.
03:37An aggressive play.
03:39Effective volley.
03:41And there is the first set.
03:51And the early indication that Federer is ready for his moment.
03:57The Haas match.
04:00He said not until that 4-3 in the third did he feel like he finally struck a good shot.
04:05He had that winning forehand that both claimed turned around the match.
04:08Did it bother you?
04:09He said, no, not really.
04:10Not the worst.
04:12Not the worst scenario.
04:13Well, obviously, a year ago on this day, Federer was Soderling right about now.
04:20Look, if he's in the final, you might want to come.
04:22Well, this is the shot that he used to beat Del Pocho.
04:38The man is 6'6".
04:39And against these tall guys, if he's struggling a little bit moving forward, it is an excellent idea.
04:45Especially since Soderling still hasn't found his game.
04:49So, he's starting to get backed up.
04:51I don't know how you get away from this.
04:54This guy, his whole game lifts up when he starts feeling this kind of confidence.
04:57He wouldn't mind getting back in the locker room, regrouping.
05:07The weather has just changed drastically here.
05:11And some dark clouds across very rapidly.
05:13And just a light drizzle.
05:16And now we've got a...
05:16It's scared, it's scared, right?
05:18It's too bad.
05:20That's just, get this guy out of here.
05:22Oh, that's no good.
05:26Oh, great.
05:28GC's got his clothes on.
05:31That's a good tackle.
05:32Hey, there's a little rugby.
05:34There's, that's nice.
05:35That's nice.
05:35That's really right.
05:35Yeah.
05:36Gotta pop this guy.
05:40And there should be zero tolerance for that.
05:44And of all sports, this one is the one that experienced the absolute worst of the nightmare with Monica Sellis.
05:57None of that today.
06:04A quick eyeball by Söderling and then he walks away.
06:12Set.
06:13I think you can say with that pretty easy hold that he's back on track here in the crowd.
06:25He's got a poor five-set record, so he needs to win this set.
06:43And it does so.
06:48So, three all now in the second.
06:52Hit those drop shots and he's doing it now more than he ever has in his career.
06:56There's another one.
06:57And the one question so often asked about Federer in the last year or so was, will he ever change?
07:03Will he make adjustments?
07:04The guys lift weights now, so he uses his upper body more than players used to.
07:08It's really windy now.
07:14Beautifully done.
07:15Did it again.
07:16I mean, this is...
07:17Could he drop his way to a major?
07:19I could be very well.
07:21So, the light rain continues.
07:23They play on.
07:29You couldn't play on any other grand slam court.
07:33No.
07:38I mean, a lot of people in the French Federation's box have moved out.
07:57Sauterly had...
08:08It's windy, it's cold, it's rainy.
08:14It's your first time.
08:15There's a lot of things in your mind telling you to not even try for these type balls.
08:20And you're playing an on Federer.
08:22And that's what we were so impressed by last weekend for a big man that Sauterly moves so well.
08:46And he's starting to hit his corners again.
08:48He's starting to find some real heat on the shots.
08:50I mean, that makes a serve like that, which is 198.
08:57You'd say that's 123.
09:00Well, that's just...
09:01Fabulous numbers.
09:02Slow things down a bit, which I think would help Roger.
09:05He's got some pretty good zip working on the serve.
09:09The tournament he won where it was hot and dry.
09:15Now he holds again at Love.
09:20One semi here.
09:38And you can make the argument, can't you, that Federer is maybe the third greatest play quarter after Nadal and Borg.
09:45Actually, it'll make it, like, muddier eventually.
09:57And then you'll have a tough time.
09:59You feel like you get stuck.
10:00Dating as anything.
10:03And he's getting it back today.
10:04Oh, and there's Federer.
10:10A classic shot.
10:14Well, the return skidded off the line.
10:16So Sauterly couldn't hit it as hard as he wanted to.
10:19But that gave Roger that chance.
10:21He came up with the goods there.
10:22He was sort of mishit.
10:43Absolutely was.
10:45Oh, that forehand long, so Sauterly does hang in.
10:57He got pushed a little bit there in that game.
11:00Federer winning six.
11:02That ball looked like a, let's see what the call is.
11:09Caught a little bit.
11:14Make that two.
11:15Best I've seen is forehand look this tournament.
11:37Consistent.
11:37Not a lot of errors.
11:38Really dictating play out there.
11:40And the serve that has been so strong through most of this.
11:49Right there today, his seventh ace of this set.
11:55Oh, Sauterly just dropping the head.
11:58Can't believe two in a row whistle by.
12:01That was 132.
12:02And isn't that amazing when you're so good.
12:13Generally, people want to see the king get beaten.
12:16They want to see the change.
12:17But it's impossible to feel that way about Roger Federer.
12:22Cease.
12:24Again, this is his best new shot.
12:26As close as he has ever been to history.
12:42One set left for Federer.
12:48That succeeded in such a big way that you can...
12:51And look, we do this, John, you've lived it in your sport.
13:03We do it in all of our sports.
13:04We compare a little bit more than that.
13:06Tiny bit.
13:07Here we go.
13:24Here.
13:27That's it.
13:29he just barely made that
13:42roger looked like he was toying with him there that love would have just
13:50started to prepare the nail in the coffin
13:52and that ball just barely over the net he cut it too close but
13:58thankfully for him it went in that's where the weight work comes in handy
14:04longest rally of the match and also the best one
14:22no break point chances the entire match
14:25oh boy
14:27and now that roar coming up is a sense
14:33imminent history for Federer as we
14:37that have watched him play
14:38and now if you didn't see Soderling play last Sunday when he beat Nadal that was a little
14:43glimpsed
14:54he doesn't even look winded out you're out there his serve is just awesome
15:06four aces did not even hit
15:15four aces did not even hit
15:28like that
15:29like that
15:30exactly and MQ again
15:32Soderling got a short ball he needed to jump on that exactly
15:51you hear them cheer for a better match these guys just want roger to win don't they
15:56these fans are not looking for more match they're looking for roger to make history
16:01for a better match they're looking for more and more teams than they're looking for more and more than ref
16:10Now we're at 37 minutes, I mean this could be over in less than 10 minutes.
16:3816 aces and John is going down to do the on-court interview so before we're talking about him and Sampras.
16:56And I'm going to try very hard not to talk at all.
17:08That's on the line.
17:32He looks so assured better in this uncertain display.
17:46That's off the line.
17:48Few and far between.
17:52Yeah, that's right off.
17:59Right off.
18:00Just with the doctor on it.
18:03Oh, that feels good for Santa.
18:15That feels good for Santa.
18:25Woo!
18:26Woo!
18:27Woo!
18:31Woo!
18:35Woo!
18:36Woo!
18:37Woo!
18:38Woo!
18:403-0, 6-1, 7-6, 6-4.
19:10Le Suisse, Roger Federer.
19:40Federer finally heard the word Vancouver champion.
20:10Hello everybody, first of all Roger, really congratulations, you really gave me a lesson on how to play tennis today.
20:22And to me you're the greatest player in history, so you really deserve to win this title.
20:34For me you're the greatest player in history and you deserve this title.
20:41Yesterday me and my coach were joking, you know you beat me 9 times in a row before this match.
20:47So we were joking and saying nobody can beat me 10 times in a row, but we were wrong.
20:54So for next time we play, nobody can beat me 11 times in a row, I promise you.
21:02And then to everybody in my box, thank you for all your support during these two weeks.

23:55But it's an incredible surprise for everyone.
23:56And I hope to keep a great one up for many more years to come,
23:57not just a couple of weeks.
23:58So all the best and congratulations.

24:14but it's an incredible surprise for everyone.

24:16not just a couple of weeks.
24:17So all the best and congratulations.
24:18Bravo, and continue like that, not only for the years to come, but for the years to come.
24:48So, it's great to see you.
24:54How good is Federer? Who else could pull off a bilingual podium ceremony?
25:12He'd like to thank his team.
25:18He's talking about a long career here.
25:28Tony, sorry, so many people helped me, and of course, my lovely wife, who's pregnant, thank you.
25:35My parents, of course, it's normal. They've all done so that I can be a tennis player.
25:49After all the legends of tennis, all the directors of the tournois...
25:53Thanking his parents, did everything to further his tennis career.
25:59And, of course, it's a pleasure in my life.
26:01So, I'd like to thank you all because it's not normal.
26:04And, of course, a huge thanks to all the legends of tennis.
26:08Saying that his parents made it all possible for him to pursue tennis and changed his life, thanks to all the people in tennis.
26:22He's joking that the cup, the Coup de Muscataire is heavy, so he has to stop talking.
26:43And thanking everyone and said to see them next year.
26:52You know what stands out?
26:53Weight off his shoulders now, weight over his shoulders.
26:56And what stands out in that shot...
26:58All right, Ted and Mary, thank you.
26:59I'm here at the runner-up, Robin Sutherland.
27:01Great effort, class speech there.
27:03Tell me about what happened in this match, your assessment.
27:06It was tough.
27:07You know, it's always tough to play Roger.
27:09He really played well today and he didn't give me any chances at all.
27:12You know, I had a few small chances in the second set.
27:16But, overall, he played too well for me today.
27:18Was it the occasion a little bit?
27:20You played more matches in this tournament than you ever had before.
27:23A tough, physical five-setter.
27:25Tell me how that affected you.
27:27Physically, I feel fine.
27:28But, you know, it's a new situation for me playing a Grand Slam final.
27:32And, you know, to playing against the best player of all times.
27:36I think, you know, it's tough.
27:38But, it's been a lot of fun.
27:40And, hopefully, I will play a lot of big matches.
27:43More big matches in my career.
27:45Well, I know you've believed yourself before, Robin.
27:47And the way you've played here, you've got a lot to be proud of.
27:50And we'd like to see you back it up.
27:52You should be a top ten player at least.
27:54What do you think?
27:55Yeah, you know, I think I showed to, not only to myself,
27:58to everybody that when I play my best tennis,
28:00I think I belong in the top ten.
28:02It's just a matter of doing that every week from, you know,
28:06from every tournament.
28:07So, I think my game has been more consistent the last couple of months.
28:12So, hopefully, I can build on this.
28:14And, you know, in a few weeks' time, a few months,
28:17I find myself in the top ten.
28:19All right.
28:20Last question.
28:21What way do you see yourself you need to get better to handle a guy?
28:24You're 0-10.
28:25I like your line.
28:26No one beats Soderling 11 times in a row.
28:28What would you have to do to beat him?
28:29Very good.
28:30You know, I'm working a lot on my movement around the court.
28:33You know, when I play aggressive, not many people can have me on the run.
28:39But Roger can.
28:40That's why maybe he beat me so many times.
28:43So, you know, I need to start or continue working on my movement.
28:47And then, hopefully, you will get better.
28:49And I will maybe give Roger a good match next time.
28:53Keep it up.
28:54And congratulations on a great effort, Robin.
28:55Yeah.
28:56All right.
28:57Back to you, Ted.
28:58He's not letting go.
28:59He's not letting go of it, John.
29:05All right, guys.
29:06I think you called it for Ted.
29:08Roger, you've got to feel like you're on Cloud 9, like you can fly right now.
29:11Amazing.
29:12Yeah, it is absolutely amazing.
29:15It's, I guess, the most satisfying victory in my life.
29:19Right next to my first Wimbledon, I think.
29:23Because that was so emotional.
29:25So, in a way, unexpected.
29:27And this one, there was so much pressure involved.
29:29And for so many years, I've been trying so hard to get this title.
29:32So, in the end, to get it, it's just unbelievable.
29:35How does it feel?
29:36There's not a lot of people.
29:37I don't need anyone in field.
29:38How does it feel to be called the greatest player of all time?
29:41I think that title is yours.
29:43I believe it's the case.
29:44There's a lot of other people, great champions here.
29:46Tell me what you're feeling about that.
29:48Well, obviously, I mean, it feels nice.
29:50I mean, I've always been very proud already to be called one of the greatest of all time.
29:54You know, just because I've had so many Grand Slams.
29:56I've had so many dominant seasons, you know.
29:58And it's just hard to do and to stay healthy, to keep the drive and everything.
30:02It's just, it's great to be up there.
30:04Now, the question is, am I the greatest of all time?
30:06We don't know.
30:07But I definitely have many things going for me because I've now finally won all four,
30:11in all four Grand Slams.
30:13And I'm particularly happy reaching, you know, to Pete's 14.
30:16I'm sure he's watching.
30:17So, hey, Pete, I'm sure I'll see you soon.
30:19I'm sure I'll see you soon.
30:20Yeah.
30:21What do you have to say to Pete now, Ty, 14 up?
30:23I'm sure he's happy for me.
30:24He's been texting me all the time, you know, wishing me luck.
30:27Hopefully, I'm going to match it.
30:29And so he's happy for me.
30:31I'm happy to be there with him.
30:33And he's such a phenomenal player.
30:34And like I said, also, you know, you created this game as well.
30:37So thanks to all for sticking around so long and creating those records.
30:40Did you ever doubt, Roger, last year you lost pretty badly?
30:43By the way, can I hold this?
30:44I never held it.
30:45So heavy.
30:46Okay.
30:47Just to see what it felt like.
30:48It's a lot lighter.
30:49But did you ever doubt in your own mind?
30:51There was people that were starting to doubt you.
30:53You got beat pretty badly in the third final last year that you'd be in this position
30:57and hold in this heavy cup.
30:59Well, how does it work?
31:01I mean, you lose the match.
31:02You go off to the grass right away.
31:04You play maybe a tournament or you don't.
31:06But actually, you kind of forget about clay right away because you move away from it.
31:10You know, you're going on a different surface.
31:12But I think I felt it maybe the first year when I lost in the final against Rafa.
31:16I was like, man, how many more chances do I need to get the title?
31:19You know, and it's hard because you got to wait in one year for the Olympics.
31:23It's like four years.
31:24So it's even worse.
31:25But I always believed in it.
31:27But it becomes, I guess, harder with time.
31:29You know, and even though people said I always got to go through Rafa to win this title,
31:33I knew it wasn't particularly the case because you can't be in every Grand Slam final.
31:37And, of course, on clay, he's such a dominant player.
31:39But so I'm happy to have come through myself.
31:42You know, I've had a tough draw.
31:43And, of course, it's not Nadal on the other side of the net.
31:45But I beat him, you know, a couple of weeks ago on clay.
31:47So I really feel like I deserve it.
31:49A week ago when Nadal lost to your opponent here today,
31:52did you feel a little bit more pressure on your shoulders?
31:55Because everyone's going to say you were going to win it.
31:57Or were you popping some major bottles of champagne right there?
32:00No, no, no.
32:01I don't ever wish that a guy loses.
32:03You know, I think that's mean.
32:04But I, you know, I was, how do I say?
32:08I mean, I kind of was relieved because I knew he was going to be the hardest one to beat.
32:11But after that, you know, all the press were jumping on me saying,
32:14OK, I mean, if you don't win this year, you're a bad player kind of thing, you know.
32:17So for me to come through in the end, it was an,
32:19I felt like I was just played three, four finals of French Opens this week, you know,
32:24because everybody expected me to win.
32:26So it's an unbelievable relief of pressure right now.
32:29And that's why I'm smiling.
32:31Andre Agassi, who's a great, great champion, obviously had a lot of great matches.
32:35He said a couple of words to you there.
32:37Could you share what he said to you on the ceremony stand there?
32:41I'm just really, really happy.
32:43You know, we have a lot of respect for each other.
32:44I mean, he was one of the guys I played against, you know.
32:47So for him to give the trophy away, who's such a great personality, you know.
32:52We dearly miss him in the sport, you know.
32:54So for him to be here today means the world to me.
32:56He also had the feeling like it was destiny, like when he won, I think.
33:00You know, he was supposed to lose a couple of matches also.
33:02I remember when I said, I'm never going to get, I'm not going to say that lucky, you know.
33:06I don't want to take anything away from him.
33:08But it's exactly what happened with me this last two weeks.
33:11I was so close of losing.
33:12And in the end, you come through and never, ever somebody's going to question you again,
33:16how those points were played early on in the match.
33:18You got the trophy and that's what counts.
33:20So it's even raining right now.
33:21It'll probably be postponed till tomorrow.
33:23So it's like, just had to be this year.
33:25Did I actually hear you're playing a tournament next week?
33:27You can't possibly be doing that, are you?
33:29Yeah.
33:30Well, I mean, at the home, I'm feeling okay.
33:32But I mean, you figure I got to go home and celebrate, right?
33:35I mean, I just got to do it.
33:36So we'll see what happens.
33:38Hey, listen, I just want to say, as a fellow tennis player,
33:40that it's a privilege to be standing next to you.
33:42You know, here in a winning to finally do this is well deserved.
33:45You're a class act, man.
33:46Just, I hope you keep playing for many more years.
33:49Roger.
33:50Thank you very much.
33:51Okay.
33:52Roger Federer, the great, great Roger Federer.
33:54Greatest of all time.
33:55All right.
33:56Ted, Mary, back to you.
33:58It's true.
