00:00In this video, we are going to give a thousand life-changing surgeries to people in need.
00:04And it starts with Shadrach, who's waited years for a thyroid surgery that he couldn't afford,
00:09which held him back from achieving his dreams.
00:12I have a problem here. This idea is not working no more.
00:15So he brought in some of the best doctors in Kenya to handle his surgery.
00:19How do you feel?
00:20I'm feeling well. I'm doing well.
00:21You used to have a headache every day, and now after the operation, the headache's gone.
00:25I do great a lot.
00:26And that's why we're doing this video.
00:28Shadrach is just the first of 1,000 people to get a free surgery,
00:32which is helping people get back to work.
00:33I got you a surprise!
00:35It's mine!
00:36Reclaim their lives.
00:39And even see again.
00:41Let's keep going.
00:42We set up three surgical camps across Kenya to help people that are unable to afford a simple 10-minute surgery.
00:48The people in the community, they have different challenges.
00:51That's why you see that they are coming in large numbers.
00:55So when new people come and help us, we are really grateful.
00:58Three years ago, we helped 1,000 blind people see again.
01:01And what we discovered was that for most of the blind people in the world,
01:04all they needed was a simple 10-minute cataract surgery.
01:07If you're wondering how this surgery can allow people to see again,
01:11it's because the lens in their eye got so cloudy that they can't see through it.
01:15So the surgeon uses a tiny vacuum to suck up the clouded lens and replace it with an artificial one.
01:19The surgery is that simple, and it's something that many of these people have waited years for.
01:26You've saved my job.
01:28You've saved our dreams.
01:30You've saved our happiness.
01:32This is not only helping people go back to work,
01:34but it is also giving people the opportunity to read and write again.
01:38And now I can be able to revise with my children.
01:41Now I can be reading the Bible.
01:43And for others who have waited decades, the world suddenly feels clearer for them.
01:48I want to see if you want how it is.
01:51I was in another world because I was just like half a day.
01:55Before their surgeries, many patients saw the world like this.
01:58And now it looks like this.
02:00I'm back to life.
02:02If you don't have a vision, you'd have no life.
02:05My vision is back.
02:07Thank you so much.
02:09A simple 10-minute surgery has relieved hundreds of people from years of pain and discomfort.
02:14But in more rural parts of Kenya, access to health care is far more difficult.
02:23Some of these patients we're having to pick up from hundreds of miles away.
02:26They live in remote villages near no hospitals.
02:29And if we didn't send an ambulance to pick them up,
02:31they never would have received help in their entire lives.
02:33All right, that's good.
02:34Let's get them in.
02:34Let's help them out.
02:35This hospital in the Masai Mara has done almost 300,000 surgeries.
02:40And it's one of the only hospitals in the area to do so.
02:42At the forefront of this operation is Carol,
02:45who you may recognize from helping us feed hundreds of children last year.
02:48We have seen people from all over the country.
02:51People traveling eight hours' drive to be here,
02:54to be able to get these life-changing surgeries.
02:57Madge is here at Baraka,
02:58where we will be doing the 25 most complex surgeries.
03:01So you've waited one whole year to get the surgery.
03:04Yeah, I can't do that.
03:05I don't have money.
03:06And thanks to these surgeries,
03:08many of these patients are finally getting their lives back.
03:10Everyone from my family, they would be so grateful for me.
03:14What is the first thing that you're going to do after the surgery?
03:16Human.
03:17Work.
03:18People who've suffered with conditions for years,
03:20or even decades,
03:21now are going to get an opportunity of a free surgery.
03:25Baraka focused on surgeries for the two most common conditions in the area,
03:29hernias.
03:29And thyroid disorders.
03:39If we didn't film this video,
03:41how many of the thousand surgeries we're doing here in Kenya would have happened?
03:44None.
03:45Is that not freaking crazy to you guys?
03:47Everyone you see in this video,
03:49their lives being changed,
03:50without this video wouldn't have happened.
03:52One of these patients is Mercy,
03:54a young single mother who made the long journey all on her own
03:57to treat a growing hernia.
03:58How long have you had this hernia?
04:00Three years.
04:01Have you tried to get it treated before?
04:03I could not afford it.
04:05I'm very nervous.
04:07So Mercy is one of our patients,
04:09and surgery is something that is,
04:11it's very hard for families,
04:14and they always just want to be around to support.
04:17But for Mercy,
04:18she's all by herself,
04:20because her family could not afford to be here.
04:22Even for Mercy,
04:23they had to borrow money for her to be able to come.
04:25So it's just so hard seeing her by herself.
04:29You know,
04:29I come from quite a distance,
04:32but everyone here,
04:33it's been good to me.
04:35I'm alone,
04:35but I don't feel alone.
04:38I feel loved,
04:40cared for,
04:41and I'm very happy,
04:43I'm very grateful.
04:45Because Mercy's operation is more complex,
04:47it'll take longer.
04:48So we'll come back to her story later,
04:50with a surprise,
04:51that you won't believe.
04:53Meanwhile,
04:54at the surgical camps,
04:55the doctors were completing more eye surgeries.
04:58Yesterday,
04:59I won't see,
05:00but today,
05:01I'm seeing.
05:05I'm excited,
05:06I don't have the feeling the way I was feeling.
05:08I'm celebrating,
05:10now I can see.
05:14One person whose life will completely change after surgery is Raphael.
05:18I was not able to drive a vehicle since I'm a driver.
05:22Driving in my office,
05:23I was busy.
05:24I was not able to see well.
05:29Since Raphael can't drive at night,
05:31he loses out on a huge portion of his income as a bus driver.
05:35So having this surgery will mean he'll now have the opportunity
05:37to provide more money for his family.
05:44We were so excited that Raphael could go back to work.
05:55We wanted to join him on one of his trips.
06:03The driving part of it now is more easier than before.
06:08Within minutes,
06:17hundreds of people,
06:18just like Raphael,
06:19who have waited years for a surgery,
06:21had their lives completely changed.
06:23May God bless you.
06:33Thank you very much.
06:34It has really affected so many young people and elderly people.
06:39Back in the Maasai Mara,
06:41we wanted to visit an important person in the community
06:43who had already received her surgery.
06:45Hi, how are you?
06:46I'm fine.
06:47I'm Mej.
06:48Mama Jane,
06:49a grandmother who has waited 20 years for a thyroid surgery.
06:52Before my surgery,
06:53I was tired.
06:54Didn't breathe very well.
06:55When I heard about the surgery in Baraka Hospital,
06:59I was very, very excited.
07:00Mama Jane spent 20 years living with a thyroid condition
07:03until she finally got her surgery
07:04only a month ago at Baraka Hospital.
07:06So now that you have recovered,
07:07what kind of work do you do?
07:09I am cooking for my family.
07:11I'm cleaning my compound.
07:13Can you show me around?
07:14Yes.
07:14Can you show me what that looks like?
07:16We're going on a tour with Mama Jane.
07:17Woohoo!
07:17Woohoo!
07:18I went to take.
07:19Are you ready?
07:20I'm ready.
07:20Stand here.
07:21Yes.
07:22Let us start.
07:24Yes.
07:25I want you to finish all the land.
07:27Finish all the land today?
07:28Yes.
07:28We just work hard today.
07:30Yes.
07:30If you sweat, it's good.
07:32You're stronger than me, Mama.
07:33And I was in the gym.
07:35I know.
07:36I'm funny, Mama Jane.
07:37Me too.
07:38You are funny.
07:39I know.
07:40It sounds like Mama Jane is a very important leader
07:42to this whole community,
07:43not just her family.
07:45A lot of these people here rely on you.
07:46Yes, because I'm doing something.
07:48And because of Mama Jane's impact on her community,
07:51we wanted to surprise her with something extra special.
07:54Mama Jane doesn't know this,
07:55but we're going to give her a cow and a goat.
07:57Oh, this is going to be great.
07:58I can't wait to see your reaction.
07:59Mama Jane, I got you a surprise.
08:02I got you a surprise.
08:04Mama Jane, these are for you.
08:05Why is that not you?
08:06These are for you.
08:07It's mine?
08:07These are yours.
08:08You give back to a lot of people.
08:10A lot of people depend on you.
08:11Thank you so much.
08:13Thank you so much.
08:14This cow and goat mean income and stability
08:17for Mama Jane's community long after we're gone.
08:19So I can milk tea, make tea for my grandchildren,
08:23send them to school.
08:29As you can imagine,
08:31paying for a thousand surgeries,
08:33driving people in from hundreds of miles away,
08:35and providing service to all these people is very expensive,
08:38which is why I want to say a very quick thank you
08:40to ClickHelp for stepping up
08:42and partnering with us on this project.
08:44Without ClickHelp,
08:44we would not have been able to provide
08:46these 1,000 life-changing surgeries
08:48you're seeing in this video here in Kenya.
08:50And credit words, dude,
08:51they didn't just help financially.
08:52They also rolled up their sleeves,
08:54came to Kenya and helped.
08:55Genuinely, thank you so much, ClickHelp,
08:57for helping make this a reality.
08:59It would not have been possible without you
09:00and you guys helped change a lot of lives,
09:02which we need to keep doing.
09:03Before we reveal the surprise we have in store for Mercy,
09:06we've brought the entire community together at Baraka
09:09for one massive surprise.
09:11You ready?
09:12Carol, can you please take off your blindfold?
09:16Boys, open up the gates.
09:20We delivered a truckload's worth
09:22of essential medicines and equipment
09:24so Baraka Hospital can continue helping those
09:26that need it most.
09:27Offloading.
09:28Being able to receive medical supplies
09:31and equipment that we really need as a hospital
09:33is one of the best things that has happened to us this year.
09:36The community is very excited because they know
09:38these supplies are going to benefit them.
09:41And so they're celebrating.
09:42They're really appreciative and very happy.
09:43And finally, it's time to reveal the surprise
09:57for Patient 1000.
09:59We're going to be doing something incredible.
10:01Mercy has no idea that we're bringing her family out here today.
10:04We're surprising her with not only her family,
10:06but a few other gifts.
10:07Mercy, we got you a little gift.
10:31There's some stuff here.
10:32Mercy had told us that before her hernia,
10:35she loved playing soccer.
10:36After my surgery,
10:38I will be really happy to go back to my team.
10:42Got you something.
10:44Yeah.
10:45We also have one more gift.
10:49We know that you had to take some time off of school.
10:51So on the behalf of our team,
10:54we want you to stay in school
10:55and we're going to pay for the rest of your tuition
10:58for your school.
11:00Really?
11:01Yes.
11:01Yes, really.
11:02Thank you so much.
11:03You are so, so welcome.
11:04These are patients who have suffered
11:06with conditions for decades,
11:07so many years.
11:08People who are not able to afford surgeries.
11:11But now with these free surgeries
11:12that we've offered to them,
11:14they've been able to get a new lease of life.
11:16You've not just touched the patient's lives,
11:18you've touched their families,
11:20you've touched their communities.
11:22And on behalf of all the patients,
11:24on behalf of Baraka Hospital,
11:25I want to say a big thank you to you,
11:27Jimmy and to Beast Philanthropy
11:29as Antony Sama.
11:30When we started this project,
11:31I wasn't super certain
11:32we were going to be able to finish.
11:33I mean, these weren't easy surgeries.
11:35I mean, some of these were massive operations.
11:38But thanks to Carol,
11:39everyone you see behind us
11:40and the entire team at Beast Philanthropy,
11:41we're able to pull it off.
11:42So thank you.
11:43Comment down below
11:44how much you appreciate Carol.
11:46And just thank you so much
11:47for watching this video
11:47because without watching Beast Philanthropy,
11:49you know,
11:50we wouldn't be able to change lives like this.
11:51And hopefully we can do
11:52a lot more projects like this this year.
11:54I'm so freaking excited.
