The opposition Taiwan People's Party has proposed a US$12.7 billion special defense budget to increase the country's asymmetric warfare capabilities. But it's a huge difference from the US$40 billion the government is requesting. The TPP says their version is more clear and will require frequent evaluations to ensure the budget is being spent on what the country needs most.

00:06The budget would allow for the purchase of 60 self-propelled howitzers and 82 HIMARS rocket systems, among other items.
00:14The proposal is about one-third the size of the government's record 40 billion U.S. dollar special defense budget,
00:20which has been blocked by the opposition coalition in the legislature.
00:24The TPP says its proposal focuses on bolstering Taiwan's asymmetric warfare capabilities.
00:31It would also require the cabinet to report on how the budget is spent.
00:35The party submitted the draft after meeting with U.S. officials in Washington earlier this month.
