00:00I'm Pete Wicks and I'm settling back into my time at the Dogs Trust.
00:09Oh, yeah, hold on.
00:11Come on puppies.
00:12Hey, little baby punk.
00:14Help!
00:17It's already been tough.
00:19It's heartbreaking.
00:20Everything they've ever known has been ripped away from them.
00:22And this week is no different.
00:24She's had a lot of upheaval in her life.
00:27Every time I look at her, I just feel a bit sad for her.
00:30But me and the staff are here to help.
00:32Good boy.
00:33In any way we can.
00:35Just like this.
00:37Ooh, look, it's nice.
00:39Because every dog deserves a second chance.
00:42Oh, you smell delightful.
00:44Ta-da!
00:46Wow.
00:48It's just been an amazing day.
00:51No day is ever the same for the team in Basildon.
01:01No.
01:02It's unpredictable.
01:04He's going to wee up you.
01:05Oh.
01:06It's messy.
01:09Cheers, mate.
01:11But ultimately, it's rewarding.
01:14This is going to be the best day of my life.
01:18Are you excited?
01:20Yeah.
01:21And even though their number one priority is the dogs in their care,
01:25they're always ready to help people through difficult and heartbreaking decisions.
01:38Today, Michelle and her daughter, Isabel, have come to hand over their one-year-old child, Nugget.
01:46We got Nugget and Jeff siblings in October last year.
01:52They all seemed to get along fine, and then Nugget started fighting with Jeff.
01:56So for the last eight weeks, we've been trying to keep them separate from each other.
02:03When they were fighting and we couldn't physically get them apart,
02:07we've got Isabel, who's 17, Bobby, who's nine, and Reggie, who's five.
02:13Obviously, you're worried in case one of the kids gets caught in the middle of a fight.
02:18Maybe I'm free falling.
02:22Maybe I'm out of time.
02:26Tell me I'm worth something.
02:37Are you happy for me to take it now? Is that all right?
02:40Yeah.
02:41I think I could get up.
02:43We've got to get up.
02:44We've got to get up.
02:46Oh, come here.
02:48Let's get up.
02:49We're falling through the cracks as I watched the world go by.
02:54It's all right.
02:55We'll find her somewhere lovely.
02:57It's a really difficult thing, though.
02:59You know, you're doing the best thing.
03:01You're doing what's right for her, and it's not necessarily what's right for you.
03:05It's a really hard thing to do.
03:07We look after her, don't worry.
03:13Right, I'm going to take it.
03:14Am I okay?
03:16Take care of yourself.
03:17See you later.
03:18See you later.
03:19Who cares?
03:20Who cares?
03:21Who cares?
03:22Who cares?
03:23Who cares?
03:24Who cares?
03:25Who cares?
03:26Who cares?
03:28Who cares?
03:29Who cares?
03:30Who cares?
03:31Who cares?
03:32Who cares?
03:33Who cares?
03:34Who cares?
03:35Who cares?
03:36Who cares?
03:37Who cares?
03:38Who cares?
03:39Who cares?
03:40What are you, everybody?
03:46Who cares?
03:47You know, Kim?
03:48It's just hard, isn't it?
03:49Even if you know that
03:51For the right reasons, it's just not nice.
03:53Who cares?
03:54What is this?
03:56As Nugget is clearly anxious,
04:07Behaviour Officer Destin has been drafted in
04:10to bring her for her health check
04:11with Vet Vanessa and Nurse Charlotte.
04:14This is Nugget. She's a little bit scared at the minute.
04:17She's beautiful. She's a bit nervous.
04:20She is a little bit nervous, yeah.
04:22She's got a lovely face.
04:23So is this a first initial kind of Vet check then, yeah?
04:27So this is the first time she's seen a vet.
04:29Yeah.
04:29So Vanessa's just going to have a little look.
04:32How old is she?
04:33Just coming up to a year.
04:34Oh, she's a baby.
04:37Oh, you're a baby floof.
04:39I mean, visually she looks fine.
04:41Give her a little groom once she's a bit more settled in,
04:44but there's nothing there that's going to be affecting her welfare at the minute.
04:47All right, well, that's good news.
04:49You're OK.
04:50Vanessa wants to listen to her heart,
04:52but Nugget seems very wary.
04:55No, she doesn't know, thank you.
04:57Not today.
04:58As you can see, she's very head shy.
05:00You can see she's backing up and everything there,
05:02so I don't want to push her so we can let her settle in first
05:05to make it a little bit easier for her.
05:07So first and foremost is just try and get her as comfortable as possible.
05:10Yeah, the behavioural team will work with her.
05:14You know, some of them are really resilient and really happy to be handled
05:17and others are just a wee bit more nervous.
05:20It takes time and there's so many dogs and so many different smells
05:23and there's just so much going on.
05:26It can be just too much.
05:27OK.
05:28Oh, you're off then, Nugget.
05:29Bye, Nugget.
05:31See you later.
05:32I like her.
05:34She's very fluffy.
05:35Whilst Nugget settles in, I'm heading north to Kenilworth
05:49as I've heard there's a litter of ten Belgian Malinois puppies
05:53who have been keeping staff on their toes.
06:00Behaviour Officer Ross and rehoming coordinator Zoe
06:03are assessing five of the boys.
06:05Hello, mate.
06:08Hello.
06:09Yeah, good, yeah.
06:10Can I come in?
06:10Absolutely.
06:11Come on in.
06:12Oh, I'm obsessed already.
06:15They keep our lives busy.
06:17Oh, lovely.
06:18You've enjoyed that, mate.
06:20That's nice, isn't it?
06:21Typical Malinois.
06:21We've got plenty of toys here.
06:23Plenty of toys.
06:23You don't need my arm.
06:25The puppies were born at the centre six weeks ago
06:28after their heavily pregnant mum was handed over by her owners
06:32who were unable to care for such a large litter.
06:34Do we have names for them all?
06:37This is Santino.
06:38Santino.
06:39Blue collar.
06:39That's Cosy.
06:41Cosy.
06:41That one's Hunter.
06:43Hunter.
06:44There's a green collar.
06:45That's Charlie.
06:46Charlie.
06:46And a yellow one.
06:47And that's Lint.
06:48Lint.
06:49Yeah.
06:49Yeah, like the chocolate.
06:51Like the chocolate.
06:51Got you.
06:52Love it.
06:52Oh, you're so cute.
06:55So what are we doing with them today?
06:57So today we're looking at if they're suitable to be essentially a service dog.
07:01Are there people that are looking for service dogs at the minute?
07:03Yeah, so we're sort of in conversation with the Manchester Police.
07:06Okay, amazing.
07:06So they're after two boys.
07:08Two boys.
07:09So we're doing sort of an early assessment to just see if they're suitable to be in that
07:13sort of environment.
07:14And how do you know what's going to make a good working dog when they're so young?
07:17So you're looking for like an aura of confidence.
07:19Dogs that are willing to sort of throw themselves in the deep end essentially.
07:24Dogs that have that little bit of drive.
07:25Rough play is normal behaviour and important as it helps puppies learn social cues by inhibition
07:40and boundaries with other dogs.
07:42So do we start a little assessment now?
07:44We're constantly assessing while we're sort of watching them.
07:47What have you noticed so far then?
07:48What have you noticed?
07:49Well, I want to get you to notice.
07:52Okay.
07:52All right.
07:53I mean, in my expert opinion.
07:55Yep.
07:55Obviously, because I'm very good at picking Man and Noirs for potential service dogs.
08:00There's a couple that have stood out a little bit.
08:03Lint seems very confident.
08:05He seems like the kind of boss of this little five here by the looks of it.
08:09Charlie, the green collar would be my other choice because he again seems the most interesting,
08:14seems quite lively, very confident.
08:16So Lint and Charlie, I think, are the most outgoing.
08:22And do you want a job here?
08:23Because those are the two we're exactly...
08:25Are they actually?
08:25Are they actually?
08:26Yeah.
08:26Are they actually?
08:27Yeah.
08:27Oh, well, look at me.
08:28Do you know what I mean?
08:29You can do my job and I'll go, aren't you?
08:31Do you know what I mean?
08:32Just unbelievable.
08:33What do you think?
08:34Do you want to be a police dog?
08:35Yeah?
08:36Yeah.
08:37That's a yes.
08:38Yeah.
08:38I mean, yeah.
08:39Oh, yeah, definitely.
08:40Police dog.
08:41So these are our two police dogs, potentially.
08:44As picked by yourself.
08:45What do you think?
08:46Yeah, I know.
08:47Yeah.
08:47You're going to protect and serve.
08:49Yes, you are.
08:50The team will keep working on socialising Charlie and Lint, whilst they wait for the police
08:59to come and check them out.
09:01But if confidence is what they're after, I don't think they'll be disappointed.
09:05Oh, oh, oh, which way do I go?
09:14Back in Basildon.
09:17All right, Vanessa.
09:19Are you getting on?
09:20Yeah, I'm all right.
09:21We've had a report of a problem with Nugget.
09:23You remember Nugget?
09:24Ciao.
09:24Mm-hmm.
09:26They said that she's just gone very lame in one of her legs.
09:29OK.
09:30Because she's a bit nervous.
09:32We don't want to be overwhelming her.
09:33So we're just using this opportunity for her to go out to the toilet
09:37and we're going to have a look and see if there's anything very obvious going on.
09:40OK. Well, here she comes.
09:43After initially appearing fine, Nugget seems to have injured herself
09:47and is now limping.
09:49What are you looking for?
09:51You can see that she's quite lame on that right-hand leg.
09:54She's offloading onto the left leg, so she's putting more weight on the left.
09:58And what sort of thing could that be?
09:59What could have potentially caused the lameness?
10:01So it could just be a soft tissue injury.
10:03It's quite easy for them just to twist their little legs.
10:06The other thing would be the knee ligaments.
10:09You can see she's quite lame there.
10:12If it's the knee ligament itself, surgery is going to be the better option.
10:16OK.
10:17What we'll do is we'll get her some pain relief for this evening.
10:19I'm going to book her in for a check in the vet suite tomorrow
10:22so we can have a look at the leg and see what's going on.
10:25The next day, Nugget isn't any better.
10:28Vet James tries to get a closer look.
10:30Well, good girl, good girl.
10:34That's a tiny bit of movement, but it just feels a bit more swollen on that side.
10:38But I think, yeah, we should have her in a sedate her and get some x-rays.
10:42All done?
10:43Yeah.
10:44Sorry, little one.
10:45X-rays.
10:46Yeah, she's not happy with that leg.
10:49Nugget is such a lovely dog, and I think because she's so chilled,
10:52you kind of forget she's only a year old.
10:54She's only a baby.
10:55She's had a lot of upheaval in her life.
10:58Every time I look at her, I just feel a bit sad for her.
11:01I think it's going to be a long road for Nugget.
11:03Always, always.
11:14At the off-site vets, Nugget is arriving for her x-rays.
11:18Come on, then.
11:22There we go.
11:24We've sedated her, and we're going to take some x-rays of her back legs
11:28and just have a good feel of them whilst she's asleep as well,
11:31because I think it's the right we're most worried about.
11:33Once the x-rays have been taken...
11:43All right.
11:44..and while Nugget is still sedated,
11:46James is able to have a proper feel of her leg and knee.
11:50It feels a bit nice, doesn't it?
11:52OK.
11:53You can see there's quite a bit of movement for her,
11:56so the cruciate should stop that from happening.
11:59That's not good news.
12:00The cruciate ligament should hold the knee in place.
12:04The movement could indicate Nugget has damaged hers.
12:07The cruciate ligament sort of sit across here,
12:10and they stop the knee from doing this,
12:12so there is more movement than you'd expect in the right leg.
12:15So it does look like she's damaged the cruciate,
12:18so surgery's probably the best option for her.
12:21So we sort of change the shape of the bone here,
12:23so we take a bit of bone off here and put a plate on,
12:26and that helps hold it all together.
12:28It's a major surgery with a long recovery process.
12:32This is not the news anyone was hoping for.
12:43Every month, hundreds of new dogs arrive at the charity's 22 centres.
12:48Whilst most find a loving home relatively quickly,
12:52some need a bit more support,
12:56and although it's possible for them to be rehomed,
12:58it's not going to happen quickly.
13:02So they become special dogs,
13:04where members of the public can help contribute towards the cost of their care.
13:07And in return, they get photos and updates from their chosen sponsor dog.
13:15Over in Wales, dog welfare assistant Rhys...
13:18Good boy!
13:19..is preparing to say goodbye to their sponsor dog, Tetley,
13:23who's been at the Bridge End Rihoming Centre for nearly six years.
13:27Tetley came into us quite young,
13:30around eight to ten weeks old, with injuries,
13:32and had to have his back right leg removed.
13:34He's doing really well, bless him.
13:36He's really, really charismatic, loves playing with toys.
13:39He will do anything for a treat.
13:41He's being transferred from here at Bridge End to Basildon Centre this week,
13:45as he will have a larger kennel and his own garden
13:48and better facilities than we can offer for him here at the moment.
13:54Behaviour officers Jordan and Destin from Basildon
13:56have come to find out a little bit more about him
14:00to help smooth his transition.
14:02Hi, guys.
14:03Hello.
14:04Hi, this is Tetley.
14:05Hi.
14:06We'll keep a distance at first,
14:07because he obviously doesn't know you guys.
14:09He has to wear a muzzle just because he gets startled easily.
14:12If there's people around, he doesn't know.
14:14He's a lovely boy.
14:15Like, it doesn't take long at all for him to come round and be a friend.
14:18As far as we were aware, Tetley was born deaf.
14:20He lost his leg not long later,
14:23so he's had pretty much his whole life being deaf and three-legged,
14:27but it doesn't let it affect him.
14:30He may not be able to hear anything,
14:32but there's nothing wrong with his nose.
14:35You've got the good snacks.
14:37Yeah, I think he's going to be really happy with you guys.
14:39I bet you're all going to really miss him.
14:41Yeah, he's a real favourite with the staff here.
14:44We all absolutely love him.
14:50Absolutely adore Tetley.
14:52He's so cute.
14:53So now we're going to settle him back into our centre
14:55and slowly meet the rest of the training team
14:57over the next couple of weeks
14:59and just allow him to decompress
15:01and settle into his new life in Charlton.
15:15The next day, Tetley arrives at his new gaff
15:18with Behaviour Officer Becca
15:20and I'm ready to welcome them to my neck of the woods.
15:24Oh, look at him.
15:27There he is.
15:28Oh, he's super cute.
15:29He's really cute.
15:31He walks really well.
15:33Hello, darling.
15:35He's a little beaut, isn't he?
15:36He is. He's the most handsome boy.
15:38I mean, he seems to cope quite well with just the three legs.
15:41Oh, yeah.
15:41He's jumping over the sofas, down the back of the sofa
15:44to watch the sheep out the window.
15:46He's a lot more agile than you might think.
15:48I'm noticing that you're doing a lot of sign language, it looks like.
15:51I am.
15:52Tetley is completely deaf.
15:54Completely deaf.
15:55So we have to communicate entirely through signs.
15:57You keep doing a thumbs up.
15:59What's that?
15:59Is that, like, good boy?
16:01The thumbs up is to let him know
16:02that he's done something that we like
16:03and he's about to get a snack.
16:05That's amazing.
16:06I mean, how difficult is it to teach a dog sign language?
16:09To be fair, when we're training a lot of the dogs,
16:11we'll go through the hand motions for this
16:13and then build on to a vocal cue.
16:15For him, we just left it at the sign.
16:17Except, hi.
16:20Is that be quiet?
16:22Yes.
16:22He's cleverer than I am.
16:24When people do that to me, I keep talking.
16:27No, but, yeah, it's exactly the same as teaching anything else.
16:30You've just got to get his attention first.
16:32I mean, this is incredible.
16:33It's a really positive move for him, isn't it?
16:36Oh, 100%.
16:37And a new audience as well.
16:40In Bridgend, he just wasn't getting the interest,
16:42despite him being such a sweet boy.
16:44He is one of the ones that he found harder to home.
16:46What do you think it is that makes it quite difficult for him
16:50to be rehomed?
16:50Is it the kind of, the legs, the deafness?
16:53It's a big responsibility, isn't it?
16:54100%.
16:55It's such a big combination of things.
16:57He has become quite fearful of strangers.
16:59Okay.
16:59And where he can't hear them coming,
17:01they can take him by surprise quite easily.
17:04That does still, unfortunately, put a lot of people off.
17:07It's obvious that you fall in love with Rebecca
17:09and I cannot wait to get to know him a little bit more.
17:12He seems like such a beautiful boy.
17:15As I leave Tetley to get acquainted with his new surroundings,
17:18I've heard Nugget is back in the vet suite.
17:21Good girl.
17:22Look at your beautiful little face.
17:24And I'm keen to find out how she's been getting on.
17:28Hello, guys. You all right?
17:30Hello, guys.
17:31All right?
17:31Nugget, how are you?
17:33Just feeding the Nugget.
17:34How are we getting on with Nugget?
17:35Did you send her off for x-rays?
17:36She did.
17:37So they confirmed that she has ruptured the cruciate ligament.
17:41So that's the little cross ligaments that are within the knee.
17:44And those ligaments are very important at holding the knee together.
17:47So with her, we're looking to increase her muscle mass and then surgery.
17:52Okay.
17:53So why would you do that first?
17:55Just to give us a good chance of success afterwards because after the operation,
18:00you're going to have a period of restriction and less activity.
18:03So if she doesn't have the muscle mass already,
18:05then during that period of restricted activity,
18:08it's really going to decrease quite a lot anyway.
18:10And then that's going to cause more problems essentially.
18:12So we're trying to just give her the best chance of success.
18:14Well, there's no time like the present.
18:18Are we going to try anything else today?
18:20Bring your sausages with you.
18:22Yep.
18:22And get in the treadmill.
18:24Physio Lauren is keen for Nugget to get acquainted with the hydrotherapy tank.
18:28Hopefully me and my sausages will do the trick.
18:31And it might be that you have to lean out to start with to encourage her to put a pause on here.
18:35The hydrotherapy treadmill will help Nugget increase her muscle mass
18:38whilst the water will reduce the strain and weight going through her limbs.
18:42Don't make yourself look silly.
18:46Nugget!
18:47But first, we have to convince Nugget that it's a good idea.
18:54Just like this.
18:55Ooh, look, it's nice.
18:56Easy.
18:57You could try reversing a little bit yourself.
19:00I feel like I'm in Amsterdam in a shop window.
19:04In you get...
19:06Please, don't leave me online.
19:07Come on.
19:08Do you think it might have anything to do with she seeing how stupid I look in this?
19:11What, if you sort of lure her with a treat?
19:13Ready?
19:14Good girl.
19:15Come on.
19:16Come on, sweetie.
19:17Nugget, please come.
19:21No?
19:21She's just sat there.
19:23You just do you, darling.
19:25Yeah?
19:25We don't want you to go in.
19:26No.
19:27Do what you want.
19:28Don't care.
19:28I'm not even looking.
19:29But you can see her moving around.
19:31She's getting around quite well.
19:32I mean, it's another way of doing it.
19:33I mean, obviously, I know that the walk is good, but she's done 400 laps.
19:37So that must be building muscle in some sort of way, isn't it?
19:40Yeah.
19:40Shall we call it?
19:42See, it's going to be really funny, though.
19:43When they stop recording, she'll go through it.
19:45Yep.
19:45You know that thing you wouldn't need to do for past half hour?
19:47I could do it.
19:48Well, at least we've all still got our dignity.
19:58In Kenilworth, potential police pups Charlie and Lynn are doing really well with their socialisation.
20:04It's been really nice for them to be able to mix with a dog that's a lot bigger than them
20:08and gain that bit of confidence with a dog that isn't their litter mate.
20:12And today, I'm helping dog welfare assistant April and rehoming coordinator Erin.
20:17These cannot be the same puppies.
20:20Introduce them to another new experience.
20:24So, is there a certain age that they kind of need to be before you kind of bath or shower?
20:29I'd say about five to six weeks, just because if they're too little, they can't regulate their body temperature very well.
20:35Police dogs' work may involve water, so confidence around it is a necessary skill.
20:41Because he's never had to shower on him before, it can be good to just kind of cook the water on your hand
20:46just so it's not so intense.
20:49What is his kind of body language telling you?
20:52Feeling a little bit wriggly, but April's just giving him lots of treats for some nice reinforcement.
20:59We've got to run away.
21:01Right, ready?
21:02Yeah.
21:03Good boy.
21:04Nice puppy.
21:05You can tell now, obviously, he's getting a little bit more restless.
21:07Yeah.
21:08He's kind of a bit over it.
21:09But that was a good first go for him, I'm guessing.
21:12Right, let's go again.
21:17Oh, look at that tail.
21:18Look at you wagging.
21:20Are you a water dog?
21:22Oh, you don't seem to mind this at all.
21:25He seems to be coping this lightly better than...
21:27Definitely, his tail's non-stop wagging.
21:30Oh, you're loving this.
21:32It's like a spa treatment.
21:34Hello.
21:34I'm going to give you a big fuss now.
21:36Our brother's coming for support.
21:38Do you want some cheese too?
21:39He's come back, it's obviously he's not scared about the fact that he's just had a bath.
21:43Yeah, so there hasn't been a bad experience.
21:45No.
21:46Here we go.
21:47It's all nice and clean.
21:48Perfect.
21:49As introductions to water go, that was pretty good.
21:53Look how fluffy you are.
21:55Oh, you smell delightful.
21:56Which should bode well for their meeting with the police.
22:00You're so good.
22:02So, in your opinion, do you think these two would potentially make great service dogs?
22:07Yeah.
22:08They're such an active and intelligent breed and they are bred to be working dogs.
22:12I think it would just be wonderful to know that these guys have gone somewhere where they're being fulfilled in their life, bless them.
22:20I mean, you guys know these puppies better than I do,
22:23but even in the short amount of time that I've known them, I feel quite proud.
22:27Yeah, definitely.
22:30I just hope the police can see what we do.
22:35Down in Basildon, whilst I've been away, after much persuasion...
22:41Good girl!
22:43...and a lot of hard work, Nugget has finally decided to give hydrotherapy...
22:48...a big old miss.
22:53Are you showing off?
22:55Good girl!
22:57...that the team have been able to help her in other ways, whilst also continuing their work, getting her used to being handled.
23:03It's as simple as it she put my hand next to her face and then rewarded it.
23:08Yes!
23:08And, finally, she's ready for her surgery at the external vet.
23:15We're going to do a surgery that essentially reshapes the tibia, the shin bone, in order to make that cruciate ligament redundant...
23:21...so that she'll be able to walk through the leg without it feeling like it's going to give way underneath her.
23:27You need to do the surgery, otherwise she'd continue to limp, then she'd get lots of arthritis in her knee.
23:31The arthritis becomes painful, she'd lose the range of motion in her knee.
23:35Some of these dogs really do struggle to get up and be mobile at all.
23:40That's it, thank you.
23:42Vet surgeon Claire begins by opening up the joint to get a better look and immediately spots the issue.
23:48That band has ruptured completely and there's definitely cruciate disease going on here, so...
23:54I'm going to cut through the bone and then I'm going to rotate a portion of the bone and then place it back in place.
23:59A metal plate will help stabilise the knee joint, so it no longer has to rely on the torn ligament.
24:11Good, we'll get this closed.
24:14It is a complex surgery, but this should give her the best knee that she can have going forward.
24:19She can return to a good level of function and have a nice quality of life.
24:22Nugget will be taken back to Dog's Trust when she's ready, but with a tough recovery period.
24:26Her stay at the centre is going to be much longer than anyone had first hoped.
24:38As a sponsor dog, new Basildon resident Tetley was always likely to be here for some time.
24:44Good job!
24:45So his big new sponsor kennel is getting a makeover.
24:50And to make him feel at home, Lisa is bringing a little bit of Wales to Essex.
24:54Put your hand in, grab the corner.
24:57No, no, it's the wrong corner.
24:59Who is the wrong corner?
25:00Well, there's only four of them, I can't know if I've got that wrong.
25:02Top corner, top corner, give me strength.
25:04What are you doing?
25:05It's the top corner.
25:06How do I know what the top one is?
25:07I don't even know now what one it is.
25:08Is that one?
25:09Where's the one I had?
25:10No, you didn't, you got the bottom.
25:11I have the top corner.
25:12Take this one.
25:13It's like having a wife.
25:14Right.
25:15How have you made it to adulthood?
25:16Shake it.
25:17Shake it.
25:18Shake it.
25:19Right.
25:20He gets a double bed?
25:21He gets a double bed.
25:22Yep.
25:23A sofa.
25:24It's got its own little playground outside.
25:25This is lovely.
25:26It's nice, isn't it?
25:27We've got the...
25:28Oh, is that because there's a Welsh seat?
25:29This is a Welsh dragon.
25:30That can go on the bed and then...
25:33Oh, jeez!
25:34It's a dragon.
25:35It's a dragon.
25:36What else have we got, darling?
25:41Can you hang these pictures up?
25:43We've got Welcoming Welsh, got his whole team, and then we thought we'd just bring a little
25:47bit of Essex in as well.
25:48Yeah.
25:49Well, I think that's quite Essex.
25:52We're not really putting that up.
25:53We are putting that up.
25:54Oh, don't be so silly.
25:55We are putting that up.
25:56Don't be so silly.
25:57We are putting it up.
25:58Don't be so silly.
25:59Ta-da!
26:02That looks all right.
26:04We know it's not the same as a home, but we want to make it as close as we can.
26:08Oh, we've done a good job.
26:10Time to see if Tetley approves.
26:12Wow.
26:13Straight on the bed.
26:15You've got your own roast dragon.
26:17Yes, you have.
26:18The bed's definitely got a seal of approval.
26:20How you doing, buddy?
26:22Yeah, we're good.
26:23Good boy.
26:24And as sponsor dogs often receive letters from their sponsor supporters, I'm adding
26:29the final touch.
26:31Dear Tetley, I love you because you are my best friend.
26:34This one's drawn a lovely picture of a Tetley.
26:37They have rubbed a leg out.
26:38Got one from Denny.
26:39Dear Tetley, I have four friends and you are one of them.
26:42Right.
26:43I declare the Tetley gallery open.
26:48Welcome home, Tetley.
26:53It's been a week since Nugget's surgery and today she's having a post-op check with vet
26:57Mark and Nurse Charlotte.
26:58Hello.
26:59How is she?
27:00So I think looking at her straight away, she's obviously weight bearing on that leg quite
27:04well, which is good because with this surgery it's not always the case that they're weight
27:08bearing as well as this.
27:09Some dogs will just be toe touching at this point.
27:12I look at the wound, you know, it looks nice and clean.
27:15The incision site has healed really nicely.
27:18She seems to be fairly comfortable with you kind of touching it.
27:21Yeah.
27:22She is on pain relief but certainly she's not reacting to any degree.
27:25So there's nothing you're immediately concerned about then in this kind of little check-up?
27:29Yeah, I think overall she seems to be doing really well.
27:32Well done, darling.
27:33When will she be able to start kind of exercising properly?
27:36Lovely.
27:37So the exercise plan normally in place for this kind of surgery is eight weeks so that's really
27:42restricted.
27:43Who knows?
27:44That's a long time.
27:45Yeah.
27:46It is restrictive, being shut into the back of the kennel so she doesn't have too much
27:51room to be going crazy.
27:53They can get bored.
27:54It is just like kennel fever really, isn't it?
27:57It's going to be really tough for Nugget.
28:00Having to be restricted for two months is really, really tough on her.
28:04She must just be sick of just being prodded and having to go for surgery and then she's
28:09only allowed out for toilet breaks and stuff now and that's not ideal but she's in the
28:13best place possible and the guys have done, you know, such amazing work with her so far.
28:17So, yeah.
28:18Little baby Nugget.
28:19She's a baby.
28:20All Nugget can do is wait but the time has finally come for Charlie and Lint because
28:35police sergeant Jamie Winrow and civilian dog trainer Mark Kaye from Greater Manchester
28:39Police have come to see whether they think the pups are up to the challenge of becoming
28:44service dogs.
28:46If they make a good first impression, their new life could start today.
28:51All right boys.
28:52I'm Pete.
28:53Nice to meet you.
28:54This is Charlie and Lint.
28:56These are the two that I personally picked out.
28:59What made you choose them?
29:00Obviously I'm not an expert but they are the most outgoing, seem to me the most resilient
29:04and the most comfortable in kind of new surroundings and doing new things.
29:07Well, we want dogs to be confident, they're willing to engage, they're willing to come and
29:12investigate.
29:13Nice and sociable as well.
29:14Yeah, really sociable, both of them.
29:17So what is it about Malinois that make kind of the perfect service dogs for military and police?
29:22It's the natural drive that these dogs have.
29:25They're very athletic as well.
29:26Yeah.
29:27So if someone was running away, the ground that these can cover quite quickly.
29:30Yeah.
29:31That is the most important thing.
29:32What sort of things would they be doing?
29:33Tracking suspects, locating property.
29:36We'd use the dogs for searching for people in a public order situation.
29:40A police dog can be the equivalent of five to six, seven officers.
29:43Wow.
29:44So you create a really strong bond with these dogs?
29:46Yeah.
29:47You're basically going to work with your best mate.
29:48The dog will work with me every day.
29:50At the end of the working day, the dog comes home with me.
29:53We want them to have a family.
29:54The love that every dog kind of wants at home.
29:56Yeah, of course.
29:57A dog will get with the family.
29:58Yeah, I mean, my job from day one is to look after that dog.
30:01Yeah.
30:02But also that dog, in return, will look after me.
30:05That's really beautiful, man.
30:06I mean, I'm obviously completely obsessed with both of these dogs.
30:10You've spent, you know, 10, 15 minutes with them now.
30:12I mean, guys, do you think it's like that you're going to take both of these dogs then?
30:16What I love is the sociability.
30:19They're happy to come and investigate, look at everybody.
30:22Nothing's phasing them.
30:23Yeah.
30:24You can see they're quite happy to come and take food out of people's hands, which is brilliant for us.
30:27That's how we do our life training.
30:29He's exactly what we're looking for.
30:31We would love to take these dogs, yes.
30:36Got your eye on either one of them?
30:38I do quite like Charlie.
30:39He's just been over a couple of times to me.
30:41I'm saying he's taken...
30:42Oh, he's making a shot.
30:43I think Charlie's picked me to be...
30:45I didn't have you down as a needy type.
30:47I certainly am.
30:51So these beautiful puppies could have a really, really important job in the future then?
30:55They're going to have a massive job within Great Manchester Police, yes.
30:58If you need me to scout puppies in the future, I'm available to do that.
31:01People have called me the best in the business.
31:03So just let me know if you need anything.
31:05And would you be available to do the running away from the dogs on the train?
31:09I've got bad knees, you see.
31:11So I'll happily watch though.
31:13Right, well, you're always welcome.
31:14What a great day.
31:16You've got a new job puppies.
31:20So that's it.
31:21Charlie and Lyn have gone to potentially become operational police dogs, which is just...
31:26It's incredible.
31:27Here you go, mate.
31:28Good luck puppy.
31:29Goodbye boys.
31:30Miss you.
31:34The fact that kind of two rescue dogs are going to end up having such an important role.
31:40It's just an amazing feeling.
31:41I mean, I'm really blessed and honored to have been a tiny, tiny part of their journey.
31:47I imagine, you know, crime rates in Manchester are going to go down rapidly.
31:51And some of that is down to me.
31:57Texans serve.
32:00I know you're such a good girl.
32:01In Basildon, Nugget is four weeks into her recovery from cruciate ligament surgery.
32:17Right, we're going to go wee-wees.
32:18Good girl this way.
32:19She's still on strict kennel rest and only allowed out for short toilet breaks.
32:27Good girl.
32:28She's gotten a bit more used to it now.
32:30She kind of knows the drill.
32:31Good girl.
32:32Well done.
32:33Good girl.
32:34Well done.
32:35Come on then.
32:36I'm going to see if there's anything I can do to make her recovery a bit more fun.
32:41Cheryl, my little love.
32:42Hello, Pete.
32:43How are you, darling?
32:44I'm good.
32:45Nugget.
32:46Oh, poor Nugget.
32:47I know.
32:48Yeah.
32:49I've been sent to do some enrichment.
32:50So, we can do two different types of enrichment for Nugget.
32:53Yeah.
32:54A foodie one and then we can do one with a few smells.
32:57All right.
32:58What have you got in your big bag of smelly stuff?
32:59So, there's some cat fur in there.
33:01It smells like biscuits.
33:02It doesn't smell anything like biscuits.
33:05Not a thing like biscuits.
33:06So, we've got some stuff to put it in.
33:09Okay, so you just want me to rip up some of this and put it in different parts of it?
33:12Yeah, if you just put a little bit for now.
33:13We've also got some yarrow.
33:15Oh, that smells nice.
33:17That's awful.
33:18Oh, I thought that was really pleasant.
33:20Just garnishing the snuff on that.
33:21Garnishing, yeah.
33:22So, what we're going to do is spread it onto here.
33:26If you're, like, icing a cake, like, try and...
33:29Do I look like the sort of bloke that's icing the cake before?
33:31No, you don't.
33:32But, like, what you imagine it might be.
33:34Like, that's it, perfect.
33:35Yeah?
33:36Yeah.
33:37If you just want to stick them in the little meaty bits.
33:39People always assume that all dogs need is physical exercise,
33:42but, actually, the mental stimulation is just as important, isn't it?
33:44No, just as important.
33:45This is good stuff to do things like this for your dog.
33:48Right, so we've done Sniffy Snuffle and we've done Little Licky Picky.
33:53Yes. Are you ready?
33:54I'm always ready.
33:55Right, let's go.
34:00Hello, Angel.
34:01Come on in, babe.
34:03Out the way.
34:04There we go.
34:05Oh, this is nice.
34:06We've got loads of lovely things for you.
34:08Oh, loving this, darling.
34:10It must be really frustrating only being a year old
34:13and having all gone through all this kind of stuff,
34:16having to wear this tone, not being able to exercise.
34:19And this will just change her life once she's fully healed.
34:22Well, it's an opportunity, really, for her, isn't it,
34:24to start her life properly?
34:25Yeah.
34:26Because medically she'll be in a position where she's not in any pain,
34:29she's not in any discomfort any more.
34:30No.
34:31So it's just a bit of a journey for the next, kind of, few weeks
34:34to get to that point.
34:35She's actually coping so well with it.
34:38It is just a shame that you can't explain to her that, you know,
34:42just give it a few weeks and we'll have got this sorted for you
34:45and your life's going to be so much different.
34:48There you go, baby.
34:49She's absolutely loving this Lickimat.
34:53Yeah, she's really enjoying that.
34:55Cheryl, when you sing like dogs,
34:57do you ever imagine what their voices sound like?
34:59Yes, I do.
35:00I think Nugget's quite posh.
35:02Do you?
35:03I've got a feeling she's a bit...
35:04This is a very nice Lickimat.
35:06I'm really enjoying getting my nose right in and around the Lickimat.
35:11Oh, yeah, it's absolutely fabulous.
35:13Yeah, it's fabulous.
35:14Hopefully Nugget won't have to wait much longer to get the all clear
35:17and finally get out of her kennel for good.
35:23One resident who is absolutely loving time in his kennel is Tetley.
35:28And today it's all hands on deck as it's a very special day.
35:34And, of course, I'm getting stuck in.
35:37Hold on, hold on.
35:39Why have I got to get my fingers in it?
35:41Have I actually...
35:42You've got to make it.
35:43OK, then.
35:44So I'm going to do this now.
35:46I'm just going to get my hands right in this
35:48and make a cake.
35:49Yeah.
35:50Yeah.
35:51OK.
35:54As the rest of the team get the decorations up,
35:56I put the finishing touches on Tetley's birthday cake.
36:00What's this?
36:01Cheese and ham.
36:02Oh, lovely, yeah.
36:03I mean, can't make it any worse, can we?
36:04And then little treats on the top.
36:06I'll give you a 9 out of 10 for it.
36:079 out of 10, yeah?
36:08Yeah.
36:09Take that.
36:10Now all we need is the dog himself.
36:13Here's a birthday ball.
36:15Birthday cake!
36:16Yay!
36:17He made it especially for you.
36:19Oh, straight for the cake.
36:20Absolutely smashed that.
36:22Happy birthday, mate.
36:24Oh, look at you.
36:25I'm wrapping your birthday presents.
36:27Oh, what have you got there, Tetley?
36:29Oh, it's a big ball.
36:30Oh, this is really cute, isn't it?
36:32Destin, how do you think he's enjoying his birthday?
36:34I think he's had the best time ever.
36:36Yeah?
36:37Yeah.
36:38It's nice to do something special, isn't it?
36:39His first kind of birthday here and him being a sponsored dog and that.
36:43And as Tetley is deaf, we've prepared something special for him.
36:47Do we say happy birthday?
36:49And a one.
36:50And a two.
36:51And a one, two, three, four, go.
36:53Yay!
36:56I can already tell he's going to have the most wonderful stay here, no matter how long
37:05that is.
37:17After eight long weeks, it's the moment of truth for Nuggie, as she's back at the external
37:24vets for x-rays to check if the surgery has been successful.
37:28We've got a nice join of the bone here.
37:42There's not much sign of separation.
37:44So it looks like there has been fresh bone being laid down and I think it's starting to
37:49look really, really good.
37:51All that kennel rest has paid off and after a much longer stay than planned, Nuggie is
37:57finally ready to go up for rehoming.
37:59And I'm sure she'll find a new loving family in no time.
38:12And talking of good news, the remaining eight Mally pups have all found new homes.
38:18But I have not been able to stop thinking about brothers Charlie and Lyn.
38:24It's been three months since they went off to start their training with Greater Manchester
38:29Police.
38:30So today, I'm heading up north to see how they're getting on.
38:35How are we boys?
38:37I'm good.
38:38How are you?
38:39Hello puppies.
38:40How are the dogs?
38:41They're doing really well.
38:42We're really pleased with them.
38:43So who have we got?
38:44Charlie and Lyn.
38:45So this was Charlie.
38:46Yeah.
38:47Who have now changed his name to Rico.
38:48Rico.
38:49Yeah.
38:50I like unusual names for dogs that work in the streets.
38:52Amazing.
38:53And then that was Lyn and this is now...
38:55Cairo.
38:56Cairo.
38:57Yeah.
38:58They look incredible.
38:59From last time I saw them when they were kind of...
39:01They were listening nutters.
39:02Last time.
39:03The ones have been doing a good job.
39:05Yeah, we try and channel their energies into the training room.
39:07Yeah.
39:08Come on mate.
39:09As Cairo's handler isn't here, Rico and Mark are going to show me what they've been working
39:14on.
39:15Rico, come.
39:16Heel.
39:17Heel.
39:18Having full control over service dogs before they go out on the streets is crucial.
39:23Heel.
39:24Heel.
39:25Heel.
39:26Heel.
39:27Heel.
39:28Heel.
39:29It's amazing actually watching them do this.
39:31I mean these are five month old puppies.
39:34I mean watching him just focused on Mark.
39:39I'm just...
39:40It's clear Mark really loves it as well, which is really lovely.
39:44This exercise with regards to Rico, I've only started doing it last week.
39:47So we're a week in?
39:48A week in on this, yeah.
39:49Well we've both got our fingers crossed for you Mark because it won't be the dog's fault.
39:52No.
39:53You ready for this Rico?
39:54Yeah.
39:55Good.
39:56Mark's also teaching Rico to jump over obstacles so he'll be able to chase suspects, search
40:03buildings and jump high fences.
40:05It's incredible watching them do that.
40:07Might bring my dogs down.
40:08Never go up there.
40:09Good boy.
40:10Up.
40:11It's like a little kangaroo.
40:12Yeah.
40:13Up.
40:14Down.
40:15Oh my God.
40:16You can kind of see that he really enjoys it as well.
40:19Yeah.
40:20Yeah.
40:21What's next Les?
40:22Do you want to get involved?
40:23Of course I do.
40:24What we're going to do is you're going to run off, you're going to go and hide behind
40:26one of the trees and Rico's going to come out, he's going to find you, give you his
40:30best bark and then you're going to reward him with a bob.
40:32All I heard there was I've got to run.
40:33Yeah.
40:34And then stand still.
40:35Run and stand still.
40:36Okay.
40:37At a point.
40:38Probably my run collapse on the floor.
40:39Come on.
40:40This training should lead to Rico learning how to find people, weapons, drugs or explosives
40:46using his powerful sense of smell.
40:48But for now, he's just got to find his favourite toy.
40:51You ready Pete?
40:52Hold on a second, just jeans are quite tight.
40:54Right.
40:55Just, yeah.
40:56Give you more.
40:57There we go.
40:58Been a while since I've run anywhere.
40:59Not the first time I've run them from the police though.
41:02Huh?
41:02Pleased for the dog, come out from the dog.
41:03Pleased for the dog, come out from the dog.
41:04Pleased for the dog, come out.
41:05Pleased for the dog, come out from the dog.
41:06vielleicht warning.
41:16Oh, look.
41:18There you go buddy.
41:19Yeah!
41:20Rico!
41:21Come on, Rico.
41:22Hey come on, he's clever boy.
41:25I love him.
41:26He's clever boy.
41:27Great.
41:28Yeah.
41:29He's clever boy.
41:30How do you think Rico did there?
41:32I think he did really well.
41:33He did really good.
41:34I mean, this is the first time he's gone out and searched for somebody totally different.
41:37Oh, so it's the first time he's done that?
41:39Yeah.
41:40With somebody he doesn't really know.
41:41Well, you know, I'd just like to be part of the process, don't I?
41:44If he makes it, then it will be down to me.
41:46It's all down to you.
41:48Boys, honestly, it's been incredible coming to see Cairo and Rico again,
41:52and you boys, of course.
41:54And what you've done with him is just incredible.
41:56Like, it honestly is. Like, it blows my mind.
41:58And it's so nice to see, like, dogs like this actually doing what they're supposed to do.
42:02Thank you for everything you do, boys. I really appreciate it, man.
42:05You've been amazing, buddy. Yes, you have. Oh, yes, I know.
42:08Because you were just a little tear away when I saw you last.
42:12Rico and Cairo still have a long road ahead of them
42:15before they have the chance to become official police dogs.
42:18But I've got everything crossed for them.
42:22I have had the most incredible morning.
42:24It is fascinating, absolutely fascinating what these guys do.
42:28To know that these two dogs have come from Dogs Trust,
42:31it's such a beautiful moment.
42:33It gives me goosebumps.
42:34You know, I saw these dogs at the beginning of their kind of journey,
42:36and this is what they're born and bred to do.
42:39It's just been an amazing day.
42:41If the sun don't rise
42:45Till the summertime
42:48Forgive my northern attitude
42:53Oh, I was raised on little light
42:56She could easily have died.
43:01Hopefully, we can get Kira healthy again.
43:04How she's managed to bring up six puppies
43:07who seem pretty healthy, it's a miracle.
43:10Do you want to say goodbye?
43:12Yeah.
43:13She seems like a lovely little dog.
43:15It's really tough.
43:16Like that would break my heart.
43:18It's a secret mission.
43:19Do you want to come along?
43:20I would love to come.
43:21Yeah?
43:22I am quite nervous.
43:24I don't know what condition they're going to be in.
43:26It just sounds so horrific and traumatic.
43:29I'm so far from perfect
43:31I get so insecure
43:33But you're pouring water
43:36Over all of my flaws
43:39And I'll always be heartless
43:42It'll always be yours
43:44I'll be there keeping you warm
43:47I'll be there keeping you warm
43:51I'll be there keeping you warm
43:56You
