00:00At St. John's in May 1993, Desmond Sainz played one of those innings that does not shout,
00:06but absolutely commands respect. 64 runs carved out of sheer patience against Pakistan in the
00:13third test. For over three hours at the crease, Desmond Sainz turned survival into an art form,
00:19letting the ball come to him, wearing down the ballers with soft hands and an unbreakable
00:24temperament. Every run felt earned, every defensive shot a quiet statement of control as he anchored
00:31the West Indies' batting with the calm authority of a seasoned master. It was not flashy, it was not
00:37hurried, but it was a classic Desmond Sainz knock. Rock-solid, disciplined and perfectly suited to
00:44the grind of test cricket. So let's watch his innings.
00:54That's about halfway and that swung, a beautiful shot, but he is attempting to swing the ball
01:01out and he is trying to get nearer to the stillness. Well, that stroke announces that there's nothing
01:09wrong with Desmond Sainz today. Well, I think it certainly is better for him to be pitching
01:15the ball up and to get dribbling. Desmond Sainz is so good off his legs, that was a lovely shot.
01:29Vakar Younis got the ball to swing around quite a bit. Now it was Imakram taking over from Vakar Younis.
01:36There you see Vakar Younis pitching up, looking for the similar sort of swing that Vakar Younis got.
01:42And it isn't there. Not quite the amount of swing and Desmond Sainz dispatching that quite comfortably.
01:55Well, it just might have pitched outside, I suppose.
02:01There's always going to be a doubt with LBW decisions from the left arm over as to whether
02:05it pitched on like still or outside like still when the ball keeps going on. You see,
02:13I wouldn't be convinced with that. Here is Nadeem Khan.
02:23Magnificent stroke. He just eased on that and it looked like a push to mid off and it whizzed to the
02:29boundary. Extra cover for four. And tantalizingly between two men on the offside in the air but
02:37right in the gap. Couldn't have placed it any better.
02:41And that's his 50. So yet another half century for this durable opening batsman Desmond Sainz.
02:56A century in the first test, a century in the second and a very important half century here
03:00of the cable and wireless test series.
03:06Unfortunately, rain on that final day washed out the start of the series that if we got good wickets,
03:12we would beat Pakistan rather easily. But I honestly didn't think we would have won
03:18so convincingly. But I think that all guys played very well. We played to our potential.
03:26And we never gave Pakistan a chance. Once we got on top of them, we really hammered them.
03:31And it stayed that way. The thing is, when you are at the bottom, it's very difficult for you to
03:39come back up. And people might have said that Pakistan let them down. That might be so,
03:45but we never gave them a chance. We were always on top of them and we stayed there.
03:48I mean, I'm definitely as a captain disappointed very much. But the thing is, they have played better.
03:52They have a better team. And I think we need, we need some time, like about a year and a half,
03:56and we can prove ourselves that we can be a better team.
04:13Desmond Sainz was one of the greatest opening baseman in cricket history. He was a stylish and
04:19aggressive right-hander. He amassed over 7,000 test runs and over 8,000 ODI runs. He was known for his
04:26ability to play long innings and score consistently across all conditions. He earned a respect in West
04:33Indies cricket and a place as a true icon of the cricket history. Desmond Sainz unbeaten 64 runs from
04:40160 balls across 206 minutes in the West Indies second innings of the drawn third test match against
04:47Pakistan at St. John's from May 1-6, 1993. West Indies declaring their second innings at 153 for 4.
04:55Pakistan had scored 326 in their first innings in response to the West Indies' 438.
05:02Karl Hooper was named player of the match for his outstanding unbeaten 178 runs in the first innings
05:08and contribution in the second as well. If you like this video please comment share and subscribe.
