Transcript
00:00These are the select few. 400 of them applied, all hoping to work in Germany's hospitality industry.
00:08But only 34 of them had the required skills and expertise in speaking German.
00:14Ruth Poirimo is one of them. For her, the chance of working in Europe represents a rare and prestigious opportunity.
00:21I'm hoping for good payments and fair payments. I'm also hoping for good working conditions and environments.
00:35I'm also hoping to make more connections here in Germany and to make a new family,
00:45since this is also a new life that people have chosen to start away from home.
00:5226-year-old Alfred Mboru hopes to become a professional chef in Germany in the near future.
00:58He has taught himself German, but that has not been without its challenges.
01:02Many sleepless nights studying the language and also preparing for this interview.

01:27Germany's International Agency for Development, GIZ, partnered with Bavarian Hotels for this recruitment drive.
01:35We support in Kenya as a supply side, so we have, let's say, a good match between what is required in Germany,
01:43or what it takes to be successful in Germany, and what we can prepare here.
01:50Katherine Karanja represents the German hospitality industry and has over 15 years' experience.
01:56Language is the first thing, because they will be doing a dual system.
02:00They will be going to school and they will be working in the hotel, so language is number one.
02:04And then the second thing is passion for hospitality and also motivation.
02:09So you have to bring this passion for hospitality and just this willingness and openness to learn new things
02:16and to start a new life in Germany.
