00:00There is the young man, still unbeaten, Sugar Ray Leonard, so fleet of hands, so fleet of feet.
00:08And of course, he is but 23 years of age, comes from Palmer Park, Maryland.
00:13He is ranked number two by the WBC.
00:17And his opponent, now look at him closely, Andy Price from Los Angeles.
00:23See that beard? You wouldn't see a man in the ring in any other jurisdiction, I do not think,
00:29in this country, with a beard.
00:31Angelo Dundee created a storm about it today, but was overruled.
00:36The beard was only clipped down.
00:39The Nevada State Boxing Commission rules do not bar facial hair like that.
00:45However, as a result of the protest today, facial hair will be barred in the future.
00:50Now, right now, Chuck Hull, the ringside announcer, introducing the fight.
00:55Ladies and gentlemen, the officials are signed by the Nevada State Athletic Commission for the next bout.
01:00The judges are Dalby Shirley, Joe Swetwell, and Charles Minker.
01:05The referee is Harry Krause.
01:08A feature traction of the afternoon, 12 rounds of boxing for the North American Boxing Federation
01:15Welch to Weight Championship.
01:17Introducing, in the red corner, fighting out of Los Angeles, California,
01:23a veteran of 43 professional fights, Andy Hawk Price.
01:28And in the blue corner, undefeated in 24 professional bouts,
01:36the North American Boxing Federation Welch to Weight Champion,
01:40fighting out of Palmer Park, Maryland, at 146 pounds,
01:45Sugar Ray Winner.
01:48All right, there were the introductions.
02:05Now, two things about Price's facial hair.
02:08One, it can cushion the blow, provide an effective protective cover.
02:13A two, and clinches, that hair can cause cuts in the opponent's face and maybe trouble the eyes.
02:20The bell for the start of action in round one.
02:23Price's seventh rank, beat Palomino in 74.
02:27Cuevas as recently as 76.
02:29Price's 25 will be 26 in November.
02:33Sugar Ray, as I said, 23.
02:35Ten-point must system of scoring.
02:38Now, watch Price.
02:39He's a left hooker.
02:41In Los Angeles, he has great support.
02:44He is owned by the singer Marvin Gaye.
02:47Those of you not familiar with this man, they call him the Hawk,
02:51the uncrowned welterweight champion.
02:54So Sugar Ray should be in for a tough fight.
02:57The right kind of fight to have when later in the fall,
03:01he's to face Wilfredo Benitez for the title.
03:06Now you saw that right of Price's.
03:10It's a kind of floating right.
03:12It is not a powerful right.
03:14It's a winding right.
03:17What Leonard must do to prevail is keep that left working into the Price face
03:23because Price can be hit with the right.
03:27There was the click, Leonard Jack.
03:29Scoring, ten-point must system.
03:31Mandatory eight-down on knockdowns.
03:33No standing eight-downs.
03:35Three-knockdown rule is in effect.
03:43Can't be saved by the bell except in the final line.
03:4619-foot, 6-and-a-half-inch ring.
03:49Good start.
03:50So there are the bases.
03:54Referee is the veteran Harry Krause.
03:57No voice in the scoring.
03:59Scoring by three judges.
04:01Cal B. Shirley, Charles Minker, and Joe Swest.
04:07We are almost two minutes into round one.
04:11Fighters feeling each other out.
04:13This fight for the North American Boxing Federation welterweight title.
04:23Leonard getting those swift jabs in there.
04:26That's what he must do.
04:29You see that?
04:30Set him up beautifully for the right.
04:32Cut the jab in, doubled up on it, and then the right.
04:35That's the right lead, which Leonard specializes in.
04:41As Paulie did for so many years.
04:44And Price, against the ropes.
04:47Suddenly, feeling Leonard's blow.
04:50And Leonard was much better power than he's given credit for.
04:53Hitting him with combination of punch on the lead.
04:56Andy Price is troubled.
04:58And Leonard, with his arms upraised, the first stop down of the fight.
05:02And it came with the round coming to its end.
05:07He will not get up.
05:08What a stunning victory over a man.
05:12All the scuttlebutt around here.
05:14By the wayside, you cover boxing.
05:16Where do you see Andy Price?
05:19He can beat Leonard.
05:20A first-round knockout.
05:22As the youngster continues.
05:24More sensational length efforts.
05:27Once he's set him up with the double jab and the right.
05:30That's done, Price.
05:31He can send him against the ropes quickly.
05:33That extraordinary delivery of punches in the most amazing hand speed you could want to see.
05:40Get away with Andy Price.
05:42Left and right.
05:44Left and right.
05:45Let's look at it again in slow motion.
05:47And Andy Price is still down.
05:50He is still down.
05:52Sugar Ray looking over.
05:54Concerned about his condition.
05:56They never dreamed of so abrupt an ending as this.
06:01What a tremendous performance by the youngster Sugar Ray Leonard.
06:05Let's look at it again in slow motion.
06:10Now, he had been set up, remember.
06:14Left, right, left, right.
06:17Combinations.
06:17The speed of the hands coming again and again.
06:20Look at the way he can double on the left as he did twice consecutively.
06:24And then the right.
06:25And Price was finished.
06:27Just a tremendous first round victory.
06:31A knockout for Sugar Ray Leonard.
06:33And people have been questioning his punching power.
06:37We're going to be talking with Sugar Ray Leonard in just a moment.
06:41Thank heavens.
06:42Andy Price is up.
06:44Apparently has his sensibilities back.
06:46There he is.
06:47He doesn't really know, though, what hit him.
06:50Dynamite action in the very beginning of this evening of boxing in prime time.
06:56And so much more to come.
06:58We'll be back.
07:00From Mummy.
07:01Here is the winner.
07:02We're going to replay for you the first round in its entirety with Sugar Ray talking through it
07:09and explaining exactly what he did.
07:11Stunning two-minute, 52-second first-round knockout by Sugar Ray Leonard.
07:17Now, let's draw upon it, don't you?
07:19In fact, the experience fighting once a month paid off.
07:22In fact, I go through the body once in a while.
07:24And I know I had him here.
07:25It's just a matter of time.
07:27I think the left hook will really hurt him.
07:30Here, I think the referee should have stopped the fight.
07:33Good hand speed.
07:34Were you worried about him when he failed to get up?
07:37I show you.
07:37Go off and look down.
07:38Yes, I thought he was really seriously injured because he was gone and he was out.
07:43Right in.
07:44Okay.
07:45Just a tremendous performance.
07:47Of course, some will say, ah, it just wasn't the opponent.
07:52We're on camera now, Ray.
07:54But no matter who the opponent, so far you've been doing the job.
07:57You've also, and I must put this question to you.
08:00I heard you talking at the press conference two mornings ago.
08:03You talked about meeting Duran down the road, Roberto's fight to come up shortly.
08:08But there is a job to be done later in the fall against Benitez.
08:12Well, first things first, Howard, I have to take care of Alfredo Benitez.
08:16In fact, I'm motivated so highly.
08:18I like to say hello to the people back home in Palmer Park because you have really motivated me
08:22because I'm going to bring the title back to Washington, D.C.
08:25And like you told me once before, don't get cocky.
08:29No, don't get cocky.
08:31Where is Angelo?
08:32Right here, sir.
08:32Oh, Harriet.
08:33Dave Jacobs is here, too.
08:34Hello, Davey.
08:35Good work.
08:36Congratulations.
08:37Angie, we'll look right up there at the camera.
08:40I must say, you wise old man, you really had the fight plan.
08:43I'll tell you, it's wise to be a wise guy because you've got good guys working.
08:47We like Dave Jacobs and Jenks Morton.
08:49We're a real team, really.
08:50And that's the name of the game.
08:52And we do our thing.
08:53We do our homework.
08:54And this guy produces for us.
08:56But let me tell you, folks, Angelo Dundee studied films of Andy Price.
09:01He heard all the talk about Price as an opponent, and he made notes.
09:05And he showed me those notes before this fight took place today.
09:09And he said a number of things in those notes.
09:12One, Price maintains bad leg position.
09:15Is that right?
09:15Well, Ray found that out right away.
09:17And when he kept that position, Ray took him out of there.
09:20Pushed up maybe a little bit.
09:22A little bit, but he did a lot of good things.
09:23See, Price was good.
09:25But I'll tell you, Sugar Ray is great.
09:28They're great.
09:28Okay.
09:29That's the story, then.
09:30Sugar Ray Leonard, first round knockout of Andy Price.
09:33Two minutes, 52 seconds, an utterly brilliant performance.
09:37And don't get cocky.
09:38We'll be back here in Las Vegas in a moment.
