00:00Emma noticed something unusual.
00:02I was like, Ronan, she's not actually forcefully holding this duck.
00:06That's when the amazing thing happened.
00:08We put the cat down, put the ducklings down,
00:11and then all of a sudden the three little ducklings waddled straight underneath the cat.
00:16The cat lay down on her side, put her paw over one of the ducklings
00:20and was kind of nursing the duckling in towards her.
00:23So we were, I mean, just absolutely blown away with this.
00:26Because normally cats would eat small birds, but it was awesome.
00:30It was just incredible to see it.
00:33She was very content at this stage.
00:36She was purring and she was really loving towards the ducklings.
00:40When I was petting her down,
00:42I noticed that she actually had given birth to three kittens
00:45only within an hour or so beforehand.
00:50It was a very lucky coincidence for the ducklings
00:53that the cat found them just after giving birth herself.
00:57For a narrow window of a couple of hours,
01:00mothering hormones will have been coursing through her body,
01:03causing her to love and nurture any small, warm, furry creature she found next to her.
01:09I have no doubt whatsoever that the cat was thinking dinner if she had seen them
01:17either maybe a couple of hours before or a couple of hours after.
01:19I have no doubt that she would have put the napkin around her neck,
01:22knife and fork, salt and pepper, the whole lot.
01:25But it was when they came to move the unusual family into a safer spot
01:30that they got an even greater surprise.
01:33As soon as we lifted up the cat, that's when we were totally amazed
01:37because the ducklings were actually latched on.
01:39They were hanging from her.
01:40Yeah, it was very bizarre.
01:42When we seen them breastfeeding, we just thought,
01:44oh my God, there's something very, very strange happening here
01:46and something very strange and also something very unique, you know.
01:49Duck mums don't produce milk and ducklings are born ready to find their own food and water from their surroundings.
02:00So to see them suckling a cat is extraordinary
02:04and their desire for warmth and comfort kept them close to their foster mother.
02:09There was just so much love there, you know, just to love each other,
02:12like you can't break this bond, it's amazing.
02:15Before long, the ducklings started to outgrow the kittens and gain their independence,
02:21something the cat wasn't so happy with.
02:24She was trying to bring him back underneath her and saying,
02:27I'd be good like your brothers and sisters.
02:29The kittens are still small and the ducks, although independent,
02:33still have an attachment to their surrogate mum.
02:36So it would seem that this rare coincidence of a cat giving birth just as the ducklings were making their first steps into the world,
02:47resulted in this remarkable situation.
02:50Filled with an instinct to mother small furry creatures,
02:54the cat ignored any natural urge to eat the ducklings and took them on as her own.
02:59Follow them on as her own.
