00:01:00This is The Oaks, a house in the country which I rented for the summer.
00:01:13As an author, I write tales of mystery and murder.
00:01:17But the things that happened in this house were far more fantastic than any story I've ever had published.
00:01:23I brought a staff of servants from my city apartment.
00:01:26And my maid, Lizzie Allen, who had been with me nearly 20 years.
00:01:34Lizzie!
00:01:37Yes, Miss Cornelia?
00:01:38Is the car ready?
00:01:40It's out the door.
00:01:42Look, Miss Cornelia, them servants you brought from the apartment are talking about walking out on us.
00:01:48Really?
00:01:50I know they don't like it here, but I didn't think it was that bad.
00:01:54Well, they've been hearing things about the killer that the police call the bat.
00:01:58And the murders that he committed here this past winter.
00:02:02Now people are saying that he's back again.
00:02:04Oh, how can they be sure of that?
00:02:06Has he committed another crime?
00:02:08No, not yet.
00:02:09But that ain't saying that he won't.
00:02:11Here's something else.
00:02:13You've heard about the bats they have here.
00:02:15Animal bats, the kind that fly.
00:02:17Yes, yes.
00:02:18Look what it says in this magazine.
00:02:20This is a report from the state health department, and it says some of them bats is rabid.
00:02:25Well.
00:02:27And that ain't all.
00:02:28Now there's a rumor going around that it was the bat himself, the killer, I mean, that released the rabid bats in this neighborhood.
00:02:36Oh, that's ridiculous.
00:02:37Yes, well, the housekeeper, the cook, the butler, and the upstairs maid don't think so.
00:02:43Well, I can't help what they think.
00:02:45If hysterical nonsense like that can scare them out of their good jobs, it's their loss, not mine.
00:02:52Come on, Lizzie, I'd want to get to the bank.
00:02:53I'll drive directly to Zenith Bank, Warner.
00:03:02I'm afraid we'll have to hurry.
00:03:03It's near closing time.
00:03:04I'll get you there, Miss Van Gorder.
00:03:18Thanks again.
00:03:20Miss Van Gorder.
00:03:22How are you doing, Mr. Berry?
00:03:23How are you?
00:03:23Very well, thank you.
00:03:25You remember Lizzie Allen?
00:03:26Of course.
00:03:27Hello, Miss Allen.
00:03:28How do you do?
00:03:29So you're spending the summer with us again?
00:03:30Yes, yes.
00:03:31I've leased the Oaks, the home of your bank president, John Fleming.
00:03:35I heard you had.
00:03:35I was surprised.
00:03:37Why?
00:03:37Is there something the matter with it?
00:03:38No.
00:03:39I was surprised because Mr. Fleming said he would never rent it.
00:03:42Oh?
00:03:43Well, I rented it from his nephew, Mark Fleming, who has the real estate office here.
00:03:47He said his uncle would be gone the entire summer.
00:03:50That's right.
00:03:51Mr. Fleming's in the Northwoods now with his physician, Dr. Wells.
00:03:56Oh, pardon me.
00:03:57Dale, I want you to meet my wife.
00:03:59We were married at Christmas time.
00:04:00That must have been nice.
00:04:01Believe me, it was.
00:04:02Oh, here she is.
00:04:03My wife, Miss Van Gorder, Miss Allen.
00:04:06How do you do, Mrs. Bailey?
00:04:07How do you do?
00:04:08Cornelia Van Gorder.
00:04:10Yes.
00:04:11Oh, well, I've read every murder mystery you've ever written.
00:04:14I just adored that weird one, the private morgue of Dr. X, even though it gave me the shivers.
00:04:19Only the shivers?
00:04:20Scared hell out of me.
00:04:22Oh.
00:04:22Well, I really mean that Miss Corny killed them off in that one.
00:04:27When you refer to my books, please don't call me Miss Corny.
00:04:31Pardon me, Mr. Bailey.
00:04:32Mr. Hines is here to see you.
00:04:34Oh, yes.
00:04:35Excuse me, please.
00:04:36Don't be strangers now.
00:04:38No, no, we won't.
00:04:39Oh, so you're a bride.
00:04:42Well, not quite.
00:04:43Not since Christmas.
00:04:45No, I'm sure I've seen you.
00:04:47Well, I used to be my husband's secretary here in the bank.
00:04:50Of course I remember.
00:04:54May I welcome our most distinguished visitor back to Zenith?
00:04:57Oh, that's very charming, but, um...
00:05:01Lieutenant Anderson.
00:05:03Lieutenant Anderson, of course.
00:05:06Chief of Detectives of the Zenith Police Department.
00:05:09This is Miss Allen.
00:05:10Miss Allen.
00:05:10How do you do?
00:05:11Lieutenant Anderson is one of our favorite citizens.
00:05:14He's on the bank's board of directors.
00:05:16Not bad for a policeman.
00:05:18You must have made a good thing of it.
00:05:21Well, I saved my money, if that's what you mean.
00:05:23It's near closing time.
00:05:24And I've got some business in the safe deposit vault.
00:05:27Please come and see me, Mrs. Bailey.
00:05:29Oh, I'd love to.
00:05:30And you, Lieutenant.
00:05:30Thank you.
00:05:31Goodbye.
00:05:31Goodbye.
00:05:32Nice to meet you.
00:05:34My, what a charming woman.
00:05:36She moved into the Oaks just the other day.
00:05:39That house is a proper sitting for a writer of mysteries.
00:05:41Oh, it certainly is.
00:05:46Vic, what's the matter?
00:05:48Come in here, both of you.
00:05:56Andy, we're in trouble.
00:05:57Wendell Hines came in to pick up $350,000 worth of bonds that we were holding as collateral
00:06:02for a loan.
00:06:04They were kept in our special vault.
00:06:06Mr. Fleming and I are the only officers of the bank who have access to that vault.
00:06:09So?
00:06:11The Hines bonds are gone.
00:06:13That's not all.
00:06:15Other negotiable securities are missing.
00:06:16From what I can gather, short of a careful check, the bank has been looted of over a million
00:06:21dollars' worth of securities.
00:06:23You'll have to notify Fleming.
00:06:26I wish I could talk to him.
00:06:28Unfortunately, he and Dr. Wells are deep in the woods.
00:06:31They can't be reached by phone.
00:06:33What is it?
00:06:54I thought I heard someone on the path, coming from the lake.
00:06:57Had an idea it might be that guide of ours.
00:06:59Oh, Sam won't show up until morning.
00:07:00It's a 20-mile canoe trip from here to civilization.
00:07:04Five will get you ten.
00:07:05Sam has a message for me.
00:07:07I thought you told them at the bank not to bother you.
00:07:09I did.
00:07:10But they'll bother me.
00:07:14Doctor.
00:07:16Yes, John.
00:07:17What would you do for half a million?
00:07:21Anything short of murder.
00:07:23Why not murder?
00:07:25Too messy.
00:07:27Too great a risk?
00:07:28For half a million?
00:07:29Yes.
00:07:30I pinched a million from the bank.
00:07:35I'm not kidding.
00:07:37I embezzled it.
00:07:39Not that I think you wouldn't do it if you thought you could get away with it.
00:07:43I got away with it.
00:07:45I'm not talking about currency.
00:07:48I took negotiable securities that could be converted into cash.
00:07:51I have the cash.
00:07:54In tens, twenties, and hundreds.
00:07:55Well, I'm your doctor, not your lawyer.
00:07:58Why tell me this?
00:08:00You'll find out why.
00:08:03Who's going to take the blame for the robbery?
00:08:05Bailey, the cashier.
00:08:06They'll never suspect me.
00:08:08I like Bailey.
00:08:09Well, so do I.
00:08:10I love the guy.
00:08:12I gave him his first chance.
00:08:13He has a lovely little wife.
00:08:15Charming girl.
00:08:17Who's the best man?
00:08:18Where's the million?
00:08:20In my family's tomb in Zenith.
00:08:22In the crypt with my father's casket.
00:08:24I don't buy that, John.
00:08:29No?
00:08:30No.
00:08:32You forget that I had you in charge when you were a very sick man.
00:08:36When you raved in delirium.
00:08:39And I heard you talk about a hidden room.
00:08:42Now, where else could you put a hidden room except in that mansion you built?
00:08:46That white elephant you call the Oaks.
00:08:49Look.
00:08:50Everyone knows I have a bad heart.
00:08:54Now, who would doubt it if you wired the bank directors that my heart had failed?
00:08:59That I had fallen from a great height here in the woods.
00:09:02And that I was badly smashed up.
00:09:05You could ship the body back for burial and instruct them not to open the casket due to the condition of its contents.
00:09:12Well, you realize, of course, that we'd have to have a body to put in that casket.
00:09:17Which means that we'd have to deal with an undertaker at this end.
00:09:20Of course.
00:09:21Well, where do we get a body?
00:09:22Couldn't we provide one of our own?
00:09:27How about Sam?
00:09:29Sam, our guide?
00:09:31Sam weighs about as much as I do.
00:09:33He's practically a hermit.
00:09:35He wouldn't be missed for a long time.
00:09:38The local undertaker would know him.
00:09:40Not if we made him look as if he'd been in a serious accident.
00:09:43But if Bailey's going to take the blame, why do you have to do this?
00:09:48The jury might acquit him.
00:09:49In that case, I'd be a logical suspect.
00:09:52I could disappear, of course, but it's safer if they think I'm dead.
00:09:56What if I don't go for this deal?
00:10:05In that case, it would be too bad.
00:10:12You mean you'd kill me?
00:10:14What else could I do?
00:10:16Now that I've told you about the million,
00:10:18I'd say you were shot in a hunting accident.
00:10:20Now look, doctor.
00:10:22If you can find another body instead of Sam's,
00:10:25it's all right with me.
00:10:27There's half a million in it for you.
00:10:30I'll do my best.
00:10:33I smell smoke.
00:10:35So do I. What's that noise?
00:10:41Look, doctor.
00:10:42The woods are on fire.
00:10:44It's coming this way.
00:10:45We've got to get out of here.
00:10:47Out the back way.
00:10:48We will.
00:10:49Oh, as soon as I provide that body we were talking about.
00:11:16Oh, my goodness.
00:11:17Is that you?
00:11:19Yes, Miss Cronivius.
00:11:21There's a storm coming up,
00:11:23and it's gonna be a snorter.
00:11:25The wind nearly blew the door off its hinges.
00:11:27Well, that noise blew my game higher than a kite.
00:11:29I think I've lost some of the cars.
00:11:31Oh, I'll get them for you.
00:11:32Oh, I see you found the paper.
00:11:34Drop that paper, boy.
00:11:36Scootin' by on his bicycle.
00:11:38Just chucked it into a couple bushes
00:11:39and let it go at that.
00:11:40Oh, for land's sake.
00:11:45Mr. Vic Bailey's been arrested.
00:11:47Oh?
00:11:47Oh, my God.
00:11:52Victor Bailey, vice president and cashier of the Zenith Bank,
00:11:55was arraigned before United States Commissioner Alvin Fielding,
00:11:58charged with the embezzlement of over a million dollars.
00:12:01I can't believe Vic Bailey had anything to do with that robbery.
00:12:07Oh, well, I see our landlord is home again.
00:12:11Landlord?
00:12:12Mr. Fleming.
00:12:13Oh.
00:12:14Dr. Malcolm Wells is back in town
00:12:16with the body of John Fleming,
00:12:18president of the Zenith Bank,
00:12:20who was killed in a forest fire.
00:12:22Mr. Fleming will be laid to rest
00:12:24in his family's tomb on Friday.
00:12:26And I hope he stays there.
00:12:29Well, why shouldn't he?
00:12:30Well, this is his house.
00:12:32And ever since he died,
00:12:33some funny things have happened here.
00:12:35For instance,
00:12:37the housekeeper, the cook and the butler,
00:12:39said that they heard strange noises at night
00:12:42and the upstairs maid swore
00:12:44that she met a man without a face
00:12:47coming up the back stairs.
00:12:49Oh, so that's why they quit
00:12:52and left me to run this place without a staff.
00:12:54They didn't tell you, Miss Corny,
00:12:56but the truth is they were scared to stay.
00:12:59But you were still here, Lizzie.
00:13:01Haven't you seen anything?
00:13:02No.
00:13:03No, and even if I had,
00:13:05I ain't afraid of ghosts.
00:13:07They're afraid of me.
00:13:10Honest, Miss Corny,
00:13:10a spiritualist told me once
00:13:12that ghosts was allergic to me.
00:13:17But this bat feller
00:13:20they keep talking about in the paper,
00:13:22I guess he'd be different.
00:13:25No, I don't think you'd have
00:13:26the same effect on him.
00:13:29Oh, dear.
00:13:32What are they trying to do?
00:13:34Drive people away from this part of the country?
00:13:36Pfft.
00:13:37Why, what does it say about the bats?
00:13:39His specialty seems to be killing women.
00:13:44My goodness,
00:13:45two of them in one night.
00:13:48All his victims died the same way,
00:13:51like their throats had been ripped open
00:13:53with steel claws.
00:13:55Well, that's a charming little caper.
00:13:58I'll have to try it sometime.
00:14:00in a book.
00:14:09That ain't nothing,
00:14:10just something bumping against the house.
00:14:16That's just the wind banging a door.
00:14:19Pay no attention to it.
00:14:21Listen to this.
00:14:22one of his victims
00:14:24who lived for a moment
00:14:26after she was found
00:14:27described the bat
00:14:29as a man without a face.
00:14:31Honest, Miss Corny,
00:14:32I think that woman
00:14:33must have been exaggerating.
00:14:40That's just that heavy tapestry
00:14:41at the top of the stairs.
00:14:43I know, I know.
00:14:44I've heard it before
00:14:45on a windy night.
00:14:49That sounds as if
00:14:50there was someone on the stairs.
00:14:52I know there isn't.
00:14:54At least there shouldn't be.
00:14:56There ain't.
00:14:56Them's just the noises
00:14:58you hear in any old house
00:14:59on a windy night.
00:15:01It says here
00:15:02that the bat
00:15:03never leaves no fingerprints.
00:15:05That's understandable.
00:15:07Having no face,
00:15:08he probably has no fingers either.
00:15:09But that, I suppose,
00:15:19is the cat
00:15:20dropping its dentures.
00:15:22No.
00:15:23No, I don't think so.
00:15:25But I think it's something
00:15:26should be looked into.
00:15:34Now, who chucked him down here?
00:15:37The wind, I hope.
00:15:39There must be a window
00:15:40open up there.
00:15:42No, Lizzie.
00:15:43Let him lay.
00:15:45Let him sleep it off.
00:15:47I hope the power lines
00:15:49don't go down,
00:15:49put the lights out.
00:15:51Now, we'll check the windows
00:15:53in the living room
00:15:54and draw the curtains
00:15:54and then we'll go to bed.
00:15:56Yes, ma'am.
00:16:06I won't be a minute.
00:16:09I won't leave you, Miss Corny.
00:16:15I won't leave you, Miss Corny.
00:16:17I won't leave you, Miss Corny.
00:16:18Oh!
00:16:19I went to get the paper.
00:16:21I turned the latch off.
00:16:23I forgot to turn it on again.
00:16:26He's out there.
00:16:27He was coming in.
00:16:29He might have got you.
00:16:31Oh, but he didn't
00:16:32and he's still out there,
00:16:33thanks to you.
00:16:34Now, you hurry now
00:16:35and we'll call the police.
00:16:37No, no.
00:16:37I won't leave you, Miss Corny.
00:16:39Are you okay?
00:16:40Yes, ma'am.
00:16:42I'm okay.
00:16:45Okay.
00:16:55Operator?
00:16:55Give me the police department, please.
00:16:58Seenus Police Department.
00:16:59This is Cornelia Van Gorder.
00:17:01I'm living at the Oaks.
00:17:03We know about that, Miss Van Gorder.
00:17:05Just a moment ago,
00:17:06a man tried to force his way
00:17:08into this house.
00:17:09You're not alone there, are you?
00:17:11What about your servants?
00:17:12Well, I have none
00:17:12except my chauffeur
00:17:14and he's away.
00:17:15He won't be back
00:17:15until the morning.
00:17:16Now, there's only two of us
00:17:17here tonight
00:17:18and we're going to lock ourselves
00:17:19in my room.
00:17:21Now, if any of your men
00:17:23see anything,
00:17:24will you have them call me?
00:17:26I'll send officers
00:17:26over there right away.
00:17:28Well, thank you very much.
00:17:30Come on, Lizzie.
00:17:31We're going to sleep
00:17:32in my room.
00:17:36Well, nothing can get at us
00:17:45in this room now,
00:17:47I think.
00:17:48This door seems good and solid.
00:17:50Like the door to a tomb.
00:18:02I think that couch
00:18:03will be comfortable.
00:18:04There's some extra bedding,
00:18:06you know.
00:18:06Yes, please.
00:18:08Let's see now.
00:18:20Oh, uh, huh?
00:18:23No bolt.
00:18:24Well, that's not so good.
00:18:25What's that?
00:18:35My good woman
00:18:36is a booby trap.
00:18:38If anybody tries
00:18:39to open this transom,
00:18:40this will be knocked off
00:18:41and we'll hear it fall.
00:18:43Geh mal.
00:19:13Oh, Fiddle-Sticks.
00:19:18I forgot my night things, my robe, my gown and my slippers.
00:19:22I'll go get them now.
00:19:23Now, wait a minute, Lizzie.
00:19:25I'll go with you.
00:19:27Now, don't you bother, Miss Cornelia.
00:19:29My room's just down my hall.
00:19:30Lizzie, I told you to wait.
00:19:32It's all right.
00:19:33I'll only be a second.
00:19:36Get it.
00:19:43Yes?
00:19:50Miss Van Gorder?
00:19:51Yes?
00:19:52Zenith Police Department.
00:19:53There's a police car just outside your house,
00:19:55and the officers in it have reported that there's no sign of a prowler anywhere on the grounds.
00:20:00Well, the man's inside now.
00:20:02He's in the hall just outside my bedroom.
00:20:04I have your men break through the kitchen door and search this place from top to bottom.
00:20:08Okay, Miss Van Gorder.
00:20:10Sit tight.
00:20:10I will.
00:20:11I have a gun.
00:20:13And I know how to use it.
00:20:23Oh, relax.
00:20:24Relax, Lizzie.
00:20:25The police did a good job.
00:20:27They couldn't find anybody in here.
00:20:29But we both saw him, Miss Cornelia.
00:20:32All right, all right.
00:20:34So he got away.
00:20:36There are men on guard outside, so just try and get some rest.
00:20:41There's nothing can...
00:20:41can get out of here.
00:21:00Oh.
00:21:00Oh, oh, oh, oh, Miss Cornelia, Miss Cornelia.
00:21:18What's the matter?
00:21:19Oh, nonsense.
00:21:21You've had a nightmare.
00:21:22Maybe I did, but there was a batty and it bit me.
00:21:26What?
00:21:26It flew in that closet.
00:21:28Oh, good gracious, Lizzie.
00:21:30You're right.
00:21:33Oh, for heaven's sake.
00:21:37Open up here.
00:21:38Yes.
00:21:45Operator, operator, will you get me Dr. Malcolm Wells' office, please?
00:21:50No, I don't know his number and I have no phone book up here, but this is an emergency.
00:21:53Will you connect me with his office, please?
00:21:55Oh, dear, oh, dear.
00:21:56I'm going to get the rabies.
00:21:58Hello.
00:21:59Hello.
00:21:59Dr. Wells' office?
00:22:01This is a call service.
00:22:02Dr. Wells is out at the moment, but if you'll give me your name and number, I'll try to locate him.
00:22:06Well, this is Miss Van Gorder of the Oaks.
00:22:09My maid has just been bitten by a bat that may be rabid and she must have treatment as soon as possible.
00:22:13And I was told that Dr. Wells was the nearest physician.
00:22:15I'll try to find him for you.
00:22:16And if I can't, I'll send you another doctor.
00:22:19Oh, well, thank you very much.
00:22:20Oh, he's out on a case.
00:22:22Oh.
00:22:22Oh, I hope it's not a delivery.
00:22:24A baby, I mean, they can be terribly complicated.
00:22:27They never bothered me none.
00:22:28Oh, Lizzie, you never had a baby.
00:22:30Of course I didn't.
00:22:31That's why they never bothered me.
00:22:32Oh, does it hurt, huh?
00:22:33A little.
00:22:34Oh, my God.
00:23:04Oh, my God.
00:23:34Dr. Wells, are you there, Dr. Wells?
00:23:58Are you there, Dr. Wells?
00:24:00This is the operator.
00:24:02Your call service is on the wire.
00:24:03It's an emergency.
00:24:08This is Dr. Wells.
00:24:10This is your call service, doctor.
00:24:12Oh, hello.
00:24:13I was just doing an experiment.
00:24:15I left the receiver off.
00:24:16That's what I thought, but I kept trying.
00:24:18Miss Van Gorder at the Oaks called and said that her maid had been bitten by a bat.
00:24:22And she's afraid it might be rabid.
00:24:24What?
00:24:24Oh, all right.
00:24:26Tell her I'll be right over there.
00:24:27Oh, all right.
00:24:28Tell her I'll be right over there.
00:24:29And she'll be right over there.
00:24:34Oh, boy.
00:24:34Oh, boy.
00:24:34Oh, boy.
00:24:35Oh, boy.
00:24:40Oh, boy.
00:24:41Oh, boy.
00:24:43Oh, boy.
00:24:49Das war's.
00:25:19Untertitelung. BR 2018
00:25:49Who's there?
00:25:59Dr. Wells.
00:26:01Come in.
00:26:02Good evening.
00:26:04Oh, I'm so glad they found you, Doctor.
00:26:06Well, I reached my office shortly after you called.
00:26:09How is your maid?
00:26:10Is she in any pain?
00:26:11No, no, she doesn't seem to be.
00:26:13Did the bat get away?
00:26:15No, I believe it's still in my bedroom.
00:26:17Oh, good. I want to examine it.
00:26:19There you go, Miss Allen. Now you'll feel better.
00:26:22Doctor, have I got the rabies?
00:26:25Well, I can tell you better after I've examined the bat's brain under a microscope.
00:26:28That thing's got a brain?
00:26:30Oh, you'd be surprised.
00:26:32Where is it?
00:26:33I think the little darling is in that closet.
00:26:36Oh.
00:26:36You know, it's a pity you leased this house, Miss Van Gorder.
00:26:41Why a pity?
00:26:43Well, my dear lady, I don't want to alarm you, but...
00:26:45Oh, well, after tonight, nothing can alarm me.
00:26:48Yes, I understand. It must have been terrifying.
00:26:50and so many unexplainable things have happened here.
00:26:55There's something about the place.
00:26:57Your servants must have sensed it when they walked out on you.
00:27:01An apprehension of disaster.
00:27:04Well, let's see.
00:27:06There he is, all right now.
00:27:11Take it easy.
00:27:12Nobody's going to hurt you.
00:27:14Quiet now.
00:27:15Quiet.
00:27:16And he looks quite normal, doesn't seem to be sick at all.
00:27:25Oh, ain't that nice.
00:27:27I've been worried about him.
00:27:29Well, you should be.
00:27:31From his appearance,
00:27:32I'd say that he doesn't have any infection.
00:27:36In which case, you've had a narrow escape.
00:27:40Now, you take one of those tablets I left for you,
00:27:43and I'll guarantee you a good night.
00:27:44and I'll drop in on you tomorrow.
00:27:46Oh, thanks for everything, Doctor.
00:27:50Now, don't worry. I can find my way out.
00:27:52Oh, I know you can, but do let me help you.
00:27:54Oh, don't forget that once I'm gone,
00:27:56you'll have to climb those stairs alone.
00:27:58Oh, I'm all right. I'm armed now.
00:28:01Can you shoot one of those things without shutting your eyes?
00:28:04Oh, Doctor, there are guns in every book I've ever written.
00:28:07I don't write about things I'm unfamiliar with.
00:28:11Lock the door, Lizzie.
00:28:12Good night.
00:28:12Yes, ma'am.
00:28:13Good night, Doctor.
00:28:14Good night, Doctor.
00:28:16Accident?
00:28:17No, no, the wind blew him down.
00:28:19Oh.
00:28:19I think.
00:28:20Oh.
00:28:21Did you know that young Mark Fleming leased you this house
00:28:24without notifying his uncle?
00:28:26No.
00:28:27No, I didn't.
00:28:28Well, it doesn't matter now.
00:28:29John Fleming is dead and Mark's his heir.
00:28:32But if John were alive,
00:28:33he would warn you to leave here, Miss Van Gaulle.
00:28:35Really?
00:28:35Yes.
00:28:37It's been a tragic place for anyone who ever lived in it.
00:28:40Well, good night.
00:28:41Good night, Doctor.
00:28:41Who's out there?
00:28:44Nobody you need to worry about, Doctor.
00:28:46Oh, it's Andy.
00:28:47That's right.
00:28:47Oh, good evening, Miss Van Gaulle.
00:28:48Good evening, Lieutenant.
00:28:50Is somebody sick here?
00:28:52My maid was bitten by a bat.
00:28:54Oh.
00:28:56A rabbit bat?
00:28:56Well, I'll know for sure when I get to my lab,
00:28:59I caught the bat.
00:29:01It happened indoors?
00:29:03In my bedroom, yes.
00:29:04How'd it get in?
00:29:05Well, there are many ways a bat could get in a house.
00:29:08You ought to know.
00:29:10I spotted this hole in the window the minute I got here.
00:29:13Why?
00:29:13That's where the two-legged bat got your door open.
00:29:19Miss Van Gaulle told me that she phoned headquarters at Zenith.
00:29:24Yes, I phoned twice.
00:29:25The second time was after the prowler got in the house.
00:29:28Weren't you at headquarters, Andy?
00:29:30No, but they contacted me.
00:29:31An officer came and searched the house from top to bottom,
00:29:34but they couldn't find the bat.
00:29:35You better have this window fixed tomorrow.
00:29:37Oh, yes, I certainly shall.
00:29:38I'd better be going.
00:29:40I'm due in surgery at 8 o'clock in the morning.
00:29:42Good night.
00:29:43Good night, Doctor.
00:29:43There will be a man patrolling the grounds all night, Miss Van Gaulle.
00:29:46Oh, thank you.
00:29:46And nobody inside, Andy?
00:29:48Why should there be?
00:29:50Well, how do you know but what the bat is hiding somewhere in the house?
00:29:54I'm quite sure he isn't in the house, Doctor.
00:29:57Not now.
00:30:01Good night.
00:30:02Good night.
00:30:08Hi, Andy.
00:30:21Hello, Mark.
00:30:24Well, congratulations.
00:30:27Realistic business must be picking up.
00:30:29New office, new furniture.
00:30:31New deal.
00:30:32How do you like it?
00:30:33It looks expensive.
00:30:35Are you squandering your inheritance?
00:30:36Oh, I haven't got it yet.
00:30:38Well, the paper says John Fleming left his entire fortune to you.
00:30:41Funny thing about that entire fortune is that we can't find it.
00:30:44No kidding.
00:30:46Well, all Uncle John had in his bank account was a couple of hundred dollars.
00:30:49And his safe deposit box was empty.
00:30:52If we don't find that missing million, mine will be empty, too.
00:30:55How come?
00:30:56Well, all my savings were invested in Xenia's bank stock.
00:31:00The examiners won't certify the bank is solvent
00:31:02until those stolen securities are found.
00:31:04So the stockholders have voted an assessment
00:31:06as to wipe some of us out.
00:31:08It's a sense those securities have been converted into cash.
00:31:12And if I can't find that cash, I'm sunk.
00:31:15Well, where are you going to look for it, Andy?
00:31:17Here in Xenia's.
00:31:19Your uncle wouldn't take a million on a hunting trip, would he?
00:31:23You suspect Uncle John?
00:31:26Why, Andy, he found it at the Xenia's bank.
00:31:29That'd be like robbing the family tomb.
00:31:30You think he wouldn't?
00:31:33Well, besides, Vic Bailey's fingerprints are all over the vaults.
00:31:37Now, they didn't find any of Uncle John's fingerprints.
00:31:39Because he wiped him off.
00:31:41Can the defense prove that?
00:31:44They're trying to.
00:31:45Judy Hollander, Bailey's secretary, is a defense witness.
00:31:48And they believe her testimony will have a powerful effect on the jury.
00:31:52Oh, well.
00:31:53Well, she has a powerful effect on me.
00:31:56Judy's a doll.
00:31:59Here's the book you mentioned, Judy.
00:32:00It's your newest one.
00:32:01Yes, it's just been published.
00:32:03You can have that copy, if you wish.
00:32:04Oh, it's a first edition and you've signed it.
00:32:06Yes, of course.
00:32:07Thank you so much.
00:32:11May I serve tea now, Miss Van Gorda?
00:32:13Yes, please do, Warner.
00:32:14Thank you.
00:32:17And I see you've engaged new servants.
00:32:19Yes, of course.
00:32:20Well, how did you persuade them to live in this house?
00:32:23Jane Patterson, my new housekeeper, knows this house better than you do, Doctor.
00:32:27She worked for John Fleming.
00:32:29And Warner was my chauffeur.
00:32:32Chauffeur turned butler.
00:32:34Yes, incredible.
00:32:35He can play any part in a moment's notice.
00:32:38Did you get a plumber, Warner?
00:32:40No, we can't get a plumber for three days, madam.
00:32:43What about that leaking pipe?
00:32:45The basement will be flooded in three days.
00:32:47The pipe is no longer leaking.
00:32:49You mean it's dried up of its own accord?
00:32:52No, not quite.
00:32:53I packed the elbow where the water was coming out.
00:32:55Packed the elbow?
00:32:57Where did you learn how to do that?
00:32:59Well, into each life, a little rain must fall
00:33:02and a careful man learns to keep himself dry.
00:33:04Now, is there anything else that you require, Miss Van Gorder?
00:33:07No, not at the moment, Warner.
00:33:08Thank you, madam.
00:33:11Now, there's a character.
00:33:14How long did you say that he worked for you as chauffeur?
00:33:17About three months.
00:33:18Well, I hope he doesn't have a police record.
00:33:22My dear Dale, it may interest you to know
00:33:25that the last night of his life,
00:33:26John Fleming told me that he loved your husband like a son.
00:33:30If Fleming were alive today,
00:33:32he would be fighting to prove Vic's innocence.
00:33:35Could Mr. Fleming prove his own innocence?
00:33:39Miss Van Gorder, can there be any doubt about it?
00:33:42There will be when Miss Hollander testifies at Vic's trial.
00:33:47Oh?
00:33:49You know something that we haven't heard yet, Judy?
00:33:52Something I saw with my own eyes.
00:33:56She's not permitted to say what it was.
00:33:58My dear girl, I wouldn't think of asking her.
00:34:01But let's assume for a moment that Fleming did steal the million.
00:34:04Now, what would he do about it? Where is it?
00:34:07Hidden someplace where he could lay his hands on it
00:34:09without getting caught in the act.
00:34:11Now, if I was writing this,
00:34:13instead of living in the middle of it,
00:34:16I'd hide it right here in this spooky old house.
00:34:19Under a loose floorboard or up a chimney?
00:34:23If Mr. Fleming had the nerve to steal a million,
00:34:27he'd make his plans well in advance.
00:34:31I'd say he'd prepare a place to hide it.
00:34:34Possibly when this house was being built.
00:34:36I rented this place from Mark Fleming, his nephew.
00:34:41I wonder...
00:34:42I wonder if he'd have the floor plans.
00:34:45I'll ask him.
00:34:47Yes.
00:34:48Lizzie, will you bring Mrs. Bailey the phone?
00:34:51Oh, you ask him now.
00:34:53His number is Summit...
00:34:55Summit 7537.
00:34:58Thank you, Lizzie.
00:34:59Summit 7537.
00:35:01Not bad, eh, Andy?
00:35:07That means new business.
00:35:10Now, you see?
00:35:11Somebody wants to buy a house.
00:35:14Mark Fleming speaking.
00:35:16Oh, hello, Dale.
00:35:19Well, hang on a minute, honey,
00:35:20while I see if I have them.
00:35:22It's Dale Bailey, all excited.
00:35:24Miss Van Gorder wants to know
00:35:25if I have the floor plans of the Oaks.
00:35:28Now, what would she want with the floor plans?
00:35:29Well, she suggested to me
00:35:32that your uncle might have hidden the bank loot there.
00:35:35Are the plans here?
00:35:39Somewhere in the house itself.
00:35:42Wait a minute, there is a place
00:35:44where Uncle Johnny might have kept those blueprints.
00:35:46What place?
00:35:47Well, I heard him talk about it a good many years ago.
00:35:49I can't be sure of the exact location.
00:35:53Anyway, I don't think the old boy
00:35:54had the guts to steal a million.
00:35:56But if I find those plans,
00:35:58I'll let you know, Andy.
00:35:59Hello, Dale.
00:36:01Look, honey,
00:36:02I haven't seen those plans since I was a kid,
00:36:04but I'll come over tonight,
00:36:05and maybe we can find them.
00:36:07Thank you, Mark.
00:36:08We'll expect you.
00:36:11He seems to think they're here in the house somewhere.
00:36:13He's coming over tonight.
00:36:15Oh, that's good.
00:36:16Dale and Judy are my house guests for the weekend.
00:36:19Would you like to have dinner with us tonight?
00:36:21Oh, no, thank you.
00:36:22I couldn't.
00:36:22I still have a few calls to make.
00:36:24You know, if Judy's testimony
00:36:26is going to clear Vic Bailey
00:36:27and implicate John Fleming,
00:36:29others may get the idea
00:36:30that there's buried treasure in this house.
00:36:33Don't even mention your testimony
00:36:34until you're actually on the stand.
00:36:36Oh, I won't.
00:36:37That's a smart girl, Judy.
00:36:39And a very lovely girl.
00:36:40Well, good afternoon, ladies.
00:36:42Goodbye, Dr. Will.
00:36:43Come on, girls, let's go.
00:36:44Come on, girls.
00:37:14So many unusual things have happened to you in the shop.
00:37:31Tell them why I think about it.
00:37:34The more I realize
00:37:35I should be putting them down on paper.
00:37:38Weren't you your husband's secretary, Dale?
00:37:42Yes, I was.
00:37:42Do you take shorthand?
00:37:43Mm-hmm.
00:37:44Well, my dear,
00:37:46if you'd like to have your mind occupied,
00:37:49I want you to work with me
00:37:50while I write the story
00:37:51of this fantastic criminal,
00:37:55the bat.
00:37:55téléphone,
00:38:07it's cracking on.
00:38:08Hey,
00:38:08fountain,
00:38:09it's analysed,
00:38:09thank you.
00:38:10Mine's LöseDayage,
00:38:11it's geleenage.
00:38:11Let's listen.
00:38:12Let's go.
00:38:12Vanessa,
00:38:13let's go.
00:38:14It's just,
00:38:14what should you?
00:38:15You have a nice feeling.
00:38:15Here's the now
00:38:16people going to work with me.
00:38:17That's how this works.
00:38:17Let's go.
00:38:18Das war's für heute.
00:38:48Good dinner, Lizzie, as usual.
00:38:49Wonderful.
00:38:52Oh, what a lovely piece of silver.
00:38:55It's an original, isn't it?
00:38:56Yes, they still use them in England.
00:38:58... für ein Freakfass.
00:39:04... für sausage und für scrambled eggs.
00:39:08Very useful, really nice.
00:39:18That clock hasn't struck the hour in the last ten years, if I'm to believe what Mark Fleming told me.
00:39:27Why is it angled away from the wall like that?
00:39:29I don't know. Somebody must have moved it.
00:39:31Lizzie very likely when she was dusting.
00:39:33Wait a minute.
00:39:35Did you know there's a door in this family?
00:39:37No, no, I didn't.
00:39:38Oh, my gracious, so there is.
00:39:41Maybe it opens to a secret passage.
00:39:43Certainly to a secret something.
00:39:45Who knows, girls?
00:39:46We're about to stumble on that missing minion.
00:39:48Oh, this is horrible.
00:39:50There's a panel. There must be some gimmick to it.
00:39:52There always is.
00:39:53Yes, it moves.
00:39:54It moves.
00:39:55It moves.
00:40:08Calling car 11.
00:40:09Calling car 11.
00:40:11Proceed to the Oaks and Zenith township immediately.
00:40:15A homicide has been reported.
00:40:18Okay.
00:40:20Proceeding to the Oaks.
00:40:22Notify the county coroner, Dr. Warehouse.
00:40:24Tell him to come to the Oaks at once.
00:40:36Horrible.
00:40:37As if his throat has been torn by some creature with fangs or claws or...
00:40:42That's his sign.
00:40:44We found it on the others he killed.
00:40:47I had hoped those reports that he was up to his old tricks again were pure imagination, but...
00:40:52Apparently they're based on fact.
00:40:55He's come back.
00:40:57Back to the scene of his kills.
00:41:00Yes, that's who I mean.
00:41:03That's who did this.
00:41:05The bat.
00:41:07Who found Mark?
00:41:09We all did.
00:41:10And it's Dale and Judy and I.
00:41:12Lizzie was in the dining room.
00:41:14This is my new housekeeper.
00:41:16Jane Patterson, you know.
00:41:17She worked for John Fleming.
00:41:18I know her.
00:41:19Where were you, Mrs. Patterson?
00:41:21In the kitchen.
00:41:22Cleaning up.
00:41:24I cooked the dinner tonight.
00:41:26Did you know that the secret closet was here?
00:41:29No.
00:41:30It was behind the grandfather's clock.
00:41:32Well, it was I who found it, really.
00:41:34Noticed the clock had been moved and the door wasn't quite closed.
00:41:38I'll get it.
00:41:51Who is it?
00:42:02Mark Fleming.
00:42:04Hmm.
00:42:05As coroner, you saw the same wounds on the others.
00:42:08How long has he been dead?
00:42:09Oh, I'd say about a half an hour.
00:42:12You believe it was the bat?
00:42:14That's the bat's trademark.
00:42:16Perhaps he's still in the house.
00:42:19That's possible.
00:42:21Why should he be?
00:42:25Because he's looking for something.
00:42:26And like you, he believes it's here.
00:42:29And he's a persistent killer.
00:42:31I would advise you to get out of this house as quickly as possible.
00:42:34Notwithstanding our expert police protection.
00:42:37Have you called the morgue?
00:42:38They're on their way here.
00:42:39Oh, good.
00:42:40I want to examine the body before they get here.
00:42:43May we take it into another room?
00:42:44Yes, to the sunroom in the back.
00:42:46Thank you.
00:42:47Give me a hand.
00:42:48Excuse me.
00:42:51Oh, Warner, where have you been?
00:43:01Well, madam, it was...
00:43:02Has it been an accident?
00:43:04There's been a murder.
00:43:07Mark Fleming, the young man from whom I leased this place, was killed here tonight.
00:43:10Do they know who did it?
00:43:12Well, they...
00:43:13They believe it was the bat.
00:43:15I'm sorry I had to use the front door, Miss Van Gorder.
00:43:17But I forgot my keys.
00:43:18And when I rang the bell at the kitchen door, there was no response.
00:43:21Oh, this is Warner, Lieutenant.
00:43:23He's my butler.
00:43:24He was my chauffeur.
00:43:26Why did you promote him?
00:43:27Well, it's very difficult to find a butler.
00:43:29They don't like service in the country.
00:43:31Have you been a butler before?
00:43:33I've served in many capacities, sir, but this was my night off and I forgot my keys.
00:43:37I heard that part.
00:43:39What time did you leave the house tonight?
00:43:41Oh, about 6.30.
00:43:42I had dinner at Wiley's Roadhouse.
00:43:44Can you prove where you spent the rest of the evening?
00:43:47I can try.
00:43:48Try hard.
00:43:50And don't leave the house.
00:43:51I'll get to you later.
00:43:52Very good, sir.
00:43:53I shall be in my room, Miss Van Gorder, if you need me.
00:43:56Do you need me?
00:43:57Yes, Warner.
00:44:01Surely you don't think he's...
00:44:03Warner and I've met before.
00:44:06I can't recall where or when.
00:44:10But I will.
00:44:16There'll be a crew here shortly from headquarters.
00:44:18Dusting for fingerprints, taking photographs.
00:44:20But in the meantime,
00:44:22Mrs. Patterson,
00:44:23you aren't leaving the house tonight, are you?
00:44:25No, Lieutenant.
00:44:26Don't.
00:44:27I'll talk to you in the morning.
00:44:28Good night.
00:44:29Good night, sir.
00:44:30Good night, Miss Van Gorder.
00:44:32Dale.
00:44:34I was with Mark Fleming this afternoon when you talked to him about the floor plans of this house.
00:44:38I heard him tell you he was coming here tonight.
00:44:40Dale called him at my request.
00:44:43She told me he was coming.
00:44:45Who else should I tell you that?
00:44:47Judy.
00:44:48Lizzie.
00:44:50And that nice Dr. Wells.
00:44:52Dr. Wells.
00:44:56There are a few killers who kill for the fun of it.
00:45:00The Bat very likely is a mental case.
00:45:01And I'm convinced that his crimes are motivated by his mania for personal gain.
00:45:06There's a million dollars at large.
00:45:08And he's going to keep on hunting for it until he lays his hands on it.
00:45:11Now, these young ladies are staying here tonight?
00:45:13Yes, they're my house guests.
00:45:15Well, when my crew arrives, we'll be busy for a while.
00:45:17So I'd suggest that you...
00:45:18Let we go to our rooms?
00:45:19That's a very good idea.
00:45:21Come on, girls.
00:45:26What about a police guard for this house tonight, Lieutenant?
00:45:29You've got one.
00:45:31I'm going to cover this place tonight from the attic to the basement.
00:45:33If the Bat makes another call, I'll have a little surprise for him.
00:45:38Who...
00:45:40Who is he?
00:45:41Have you any idea?
00:45:48He could be anybody.
00:45:49So far, there are clues to his identity, but nothing we could take before a jury.
00:45:54I am afraid we must look higher than the criminal world.
00:45:58He may be a merchant, lawyer, doctor, scientist.
00:46:02One of the pillars of his community.
00:46:05Ladies, lock your doors tonight. Stay behind them.
00:46:08I promise you, you'll be safe.
00:46:10Good night.
00:46:11Good night, Lieutenant.
00:46:12Good night.
00:46:38Good night.
00:46:40Good night.
00:46:42Good night.
00:46:44Poor Mark.
00:46:46Yeah, it's a pity.
00:46:48So young.
00:46:50Well, doctor, do you agree it was the Bat?
00:46:53In my report, I shall say the death was caused by the same technique used in the other killings.
00:46:58A paralyzing blow to the throat, followed by severe lacerations of the jugular, resulting in excessive hemorrhage.
00:47:05In a layman's language, he didn't know what hit him.
00:47:09Oh, he knew.
00:47:11But he didn't have time to think about it.
00:47:22You staying here tonight, Andy?
00:47:24Until I check the doors and windows, but I'll be back bright and early in the morning.
00:47:27Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.
00:47:35A lot of people are due for a shuck when I close this case.
00:47:38Yes, I'm sure they are.
00:47:41Good night, Andy. Don't get hurt.
00:47:44Good night, doctor.
00:47:45Good night, doctor.
00:47:59You know, I think we'd better let you get some sleep.
00:48:02Oh, Lizzie and I share this room for mutual protection.
00:48:05You know, one night, a storm blew the wires down, put the lights out, and I went out the next day and bought a half a dozen of these things.
00:48:10You'd better take one with you, Dale.
00:48:12Oh, thank you.
00:48:15We'll go across the hall now.
00:48:16Are you sure? There's nothing else you need.
00:48:18Oh, no.
00:48:19Quite sure. We'll be all right.
00:48:20Well, if anything bothers you, you just sing out and two strong women will come to your rescue.
00:48:25Oh, nothing will bother us. Not with Andy on the job.
00:48:28Well, good night.
00:48:29Good night.
00:48:30Don't worry. Everything will be all right.
00:48:31No, we won't.
00:48:32Good night.
00:48:33Good night.
00:48:34Come on.
00:48:40Good night.
00:48:57Oh, I don't think I'll sleep tonight.
00:49:00Me neither.
00:49:02All I can see is poor Mark Fleming staring at us.
00:49:05I thought that when people died, their eyes closed, as in sleep.
00:49:11Don't think about it.
00:49:13I'll bet you're thinking about it.
00:49:16No, I was thinking of my poor husband sleeping in jail tonight.
00:49:20Oh, Judy, I love him so much.
00:49:36You?
00:49:38You're coming.
00:49:40Oh, Judy.
00:49:41If you were a kid.
00:49:42Oh, the man.
00:49:43I thought it was for her.
00:49:45No.
00:49:46Oh, Judy.
00:49:47Oh, Jesus.
00:49:48Oh, my Lord.
00:49:49Oh, dear.
00:49:51Oh, dear.
00:49:52Oh, my God.
00:49:53Oh, dear.
00:49:54Oh, dear.
00:49:55Oh, dear.
00:49:56Oh, dear.
00:49:58Hi, my.
00:49:59Oh, dear.
00:50:00Oh, dear.
00:50:01Oh, dear.
00:50:02Oh, dear.
00:50:03Oh, dear.

00:52:36Was ist das Geräusch?
00:52:40Ich weiß nicht. Ich habe mich nicht so schlafen.
00:52:44Ich dachte, es war ein Traum.
00:52:46Es ist in der Haus.
00:52:47Ja, auf dem Boden.
00:52:49Nicht direkt über uns.
00:52:51Wahrscheinlich ein Raum über die Straße.
00:53:06Untertitelung.
00:53:32Ich will wissen, was da ist.
00:53:34But Lieutenant Anderson said if we stayed behind our locked doors, we'd be safe.
00:53:38Vic isn't safe locked up in that jail.
00:53:39Suppose that stolen money is in this house.
00:53:42Mark Fleming seemed to think it was.
00:53:44Maybe that's what somebody's looking for.
00:53:49Oh, for heaven's sake.
00:53:51Don't you hear that awful noise up there?
00:53:55Now, Libby, Libby, you've just got to stay awake.
00:53:57The house phone and the outside phone wires have been cut and we can't get help.
00:54:03Where's that policeman?
00:54:04Oh, I don't know. Something must have happened to him.
00:54:07Now, go on. Get on your robe.
00:54:09Oh, Dale, please don't go up there.
00:54:10I've got to. Think what it could mean to Vic.
00:54:12Now, you stay here.
00:54:13Oh, no. If you go, I go.
00:54:33You stay here.
00:54:36No, no, I won't let you go up there alone.
00:54:38You wait here. I'm going to see what it is.
00:54:40Oh, please let me go with you, Dale.
00:54:41Will you warn me if anyone comes?
00:54:43I'll only be a moment.
00:54:45Now, wait.
00:54:45I'll be a moment.
00:55:15What is wrong with you?
00:55:43Oh, Judy!
00:55:44Oh!
00:55:45Oh!
00:55:46Oh!
00:55:47Oh!
00:55:48Oh!

00:55:50Oh!
00:55:51Oh!
00:55:52Oh!
00:55:53Oh!
00:55:54Judy!
00:55:55Judy!
00:55:56Judy!
00:55:57Oh!
00:55:58Judy!
00:55:59Oh!
00:56:00Oh!
00:56:01Give her to me.
00:56:02I'll look after you.
00:56:03Oh!
00:56:04Oh!
00:56:05Oh!
00:56:06Oh!

00:56:11Oh!
00:56:12Oh!
00:56:13Oh!
00:56:14Oh!
00:56:25Judy!
00:56:33The bat.
00:56:34Yes, the bat.
00:56:36He caught her at the head of the stairs.
00:56:38We saw him rushing down the stairs as we came out of the room.
00:56:40I hurled that after him.
00:56:43I hit him, I believe.
00:56:45I'm going to cover this place from attic to basement, you said.
00:56:48Well, what were you covering when that poor child was murdered?
00:56:51Where were you?
00:56:52I saw a man outside in the grounds.
00:56:54I went out there and hunted him.
00:56:56I heard him in among the trees, and so I followed the sound of him as far as the brook down near the back road.
00:57:01And then I lost her.
00:57:03I'd rather give my own life than have this happen to Judy.
00:57:08But I told you to stay in your rooms and lock your doors and stay there.
00:57:12What was she doing at the head of those stairs?
00:57:15That was my fault.
00:57:16They heard a strange noise.
00:57:17Heavy pounding in one of the rooms on the third floor.
00:57:19We all heard it.
00:57:20I wanted to see what it was.
00:57:21Judy, I wish she wouldn't let me go out by myself.
00:57:24I made her stay on the balcony.
00:57:27What about your new butler?
00:57:28Oh, well, he's in his room, I suppose.
00:57:31Oh, Mrs. Patterson.
00:57:32Oh, yes.
00:57:33Did you know what happened here?
00:57:35No, sir, but I heard the screams.
00:57:37I went to call Warner.
00:57:39We have rooms on the same floor.
00:57:41But he wasn't in his room.
00:57:43His bed hasn't been slept in.
00:57:45If Mrs. Patterson heard the screams, Warner could certainly hear them.
00:57:48You're quite right, sir. I heard them.
00:57:50Oh, you did.
00:57:51And where were you?
00:57:52Outside, in the grounds.
00:57:54Miss Holland has been murdered.
00:57:56No.
00:57:57Oh, so you're surprised.
00:57:59Shocked.
00:58:01Well, I've seen better performances.
00:58:04I remember you now.
00:58:06Your name's not Warner.
00:58:08I've got a circular in my office with your picture on it.
00:58:10The Chicago police not so long ago were hunting for you in connection with the robbery.
00:58:14You're right again, sir.
00:58:15And they found me and they tried me and I proved my innocence and I was acquitted.
00:58:19That could have been a lucky break.
00:58:21Where were you when this child was killed?
00:58:23I told you before, sir.
00:58:24Outside.
00:58:25What were you doing there?
00:58:26I was following you.
00:58:27I saw you leaving the house and it seemed that you were hunting someone.
00:58:30I thought you might need some help.
00:58:31Oh, yes, sir.
00:58:32I followed your flashlight down through the trees, then it disappeared.
00:58:36And then suddenly as I was staring out into the darkness, I was struck by something on the back of the head.
00:58:41The next thing I knew, I was lying on the ground.
00:58:43I realized I'd been knocked out.
00:58:45I wish you had been knocked out.
00:58:47But then we'd have found you with your mask still on your face.
00:58:50You were hit here in this house with this poker as you were rushing down those stairs after that child was killed.
00:58:54Oh, no, sir. You can't pin this on me. I'm not a bat.
00:58:57I've never killed. I could kill. I won't take the rap for this.
00:59:27Well, doctor, we have another case for the county coroner.
00:59:36You see, the bat came back.
00:59:39Why did you come back, doctor?
00:59:42Well, I had an accident about a mile down the road.
00:59:48The right rear wheel of my car came off and I plunged into the ditch.
00:59:52This was the nearest house, so I came here to call for help.
00:59:56I thought I'd find you around, Andy.
01:00:03Physician, heal thyself.
01:00:07You must have been hit by something on the back of your head.
01:00:10I told you I had an accident.
01:00:12So you did, doctor. So you did.
01:00:17I could be wrong.
01:00:19But maybe I'm not.
01:00:21We shall see.
01:00:26All right, Dale, let's start a new chapter.
01:00:29For days, the murders held the headlines.
01:00:32Lieutenant Anderson grilled us
01:00:35and ransacked the house from top to bottom.
01:00:38Warner was not placed under arrest, but his every move was watched.
01:00:43At night, except for a detective on guard in the house, the police and the reporters left us alone.
01:00:50And on one of those nights, without telling Lizzie or anyone else, I pursued a secret investigation of my own.
01:00:59It was in an empty room on the third floor where we kept our trunks and other things.
01:01:11I never had a funny job in performing and everything.
01:01:12But that is so bad.
01:01:13I didn't have enough time.
01:01:14You can make any gifts of trauma.
01:01:23What kind of mrê happens.
01:01:26He left his Bali to March on the border and now he sm Slyаковu.
01:01:30All and it was the first rolling Association from his lady's sister and his wife.

01:03:15It's a bright idea to kill me in my own lab and let people think that I'm the bat.
01:03:19But you had to kill me first.
01:03:21What was it to be? Ambush?
01:03:23And clever as you are, you're not smart enough to do that.
01:03:27Nor were you smart enough to find the money, though you came quite close to it.
01:03:31But I know where it is.
01:03:33And when you're dead with that sign pinned on your chest,
01:03:37I'm going to collect it and live happily ever after.
01:03:41He destroyed himself.
01:03:43How true that will be.
01:03:45Goodbye, bat.
01:03:47Here's a serum that will heal you whether you're a rabbit or not.
01:04:01Let me go.
01:04:03Let us go.
01:04:04Let us go.
01:04:06Das war's.
01:04:36Musik
01:05:06Das ist falsch.
01:05:36Das ist falsch.
01:05:48Das ist Cornelius.
01:05:58Das ist Cornelius.
01:06:06Now, where would she be going at this time of night?
01:06:22Well, lamb's sake!
01:06:24Oh, never!
01:06:34Mr. Davenport! Mr. Davenport!
01:06:40A fine thing!
01:06:42The door unbolted the chain off and you asleep on the job.
01:06:46Wait till Lieutenant Anderson hears about this.
01:06:48Come on, wake up!
01:06:50What's the matter with you?
01:06:52I don't know, I don't know.
01:06:54My head hurts. My whole body's numb.
01:06:56Here, here, take a sip of this.
01:06:58Try to snap out of it. I'll be back in a minute.
01:07:00Hurry, will you? It's Lizzie!
01:07:02I'm terribly worried.
01:07:04I can't find Miss Cornelia anywhere.
01:07:06And something's happened to the policeman.
01:07:08I don't know what.
01:07:09Get Warner, bring him to the drawing room.
01:07:10Tell him we need him.
01:07:12Are you all right now?
01:07:13Yeah, I'll be all right in a minute.
01:07:14I remember now.
01:07:15I took a drink of wine from that decanter there.
01:07:18Miss Van Gorder told me to help myself.
01:07:20She wouldn't put nothing in it.
01:07:21Well, somebody did.
01:07:22I can't.
01:07:23I can't.
01:07:24I can't.
01:07:25I can't.
01:07:26I can't.
01:07:27I can't.
01:07:28I can't.
01:07:29I can't.
01:07:30I can't.
01:07:31I can't.
01:07:32I can't.
01:07:33I can't.
01:07:34I can't.
01:07:35I can't.
01:07:36I can't.
01:07:37I can't.
01:07:38I can't.
01:07:39I can't.
01:07:40Sie haben nichts in es.
01:07:41Sie hat jemanden.
01:07:42Sie wusste ich hier.
01:07:44Sie hat Frau Van Gorter.
01:07:46Ich kann sie nicht finden.
01:07:48Ich habe sie in der Basis.
01:07:50Ich habe die Hausgeber gesagt.
01:07:52Herr Andersen will wissen.
01:07:54Hallo.
01:07:55Das ist Davenport in den Oaks.
01:07:57Wir haben Probleme hier.
01:07:59Ich war eine Sache.
01:08:01Ja.
01:08:02Aber ich habe mich geholfen,
01:08:03weil sie Frau Van Gorter ist.
01:08:06Du sollst ihn anrufen.
01:08:09Er ist nicht zu Hause.
01:08:11Wo ist er?
01:08:12In welchen Fall?
01:08:14Dr. Wells.
01:08:17Was haben Sie gesagt?
01:08:19Oh, hurry.
01:08:20Wir müssen Sie finden, Frau Cornelia.
01:08:24Okay.
01:08:25Dr. Andersen ist in einer Falle.
01:08:28Dr. Wells war in seiner garage.
01:08:31Dr. Wells?
01:08:34Es ist etwas über die Killinge of Wells.
01:08:36Aber die Hände nicht darüber sprechen.
01:08:38Sie wissen, dass eine Killinge nicht in der Killinge ist.
01:08:40Es gibt keinen Kind.
01:08:41Ich sollte mich auf den Killinge.
01:08:43Wo ist Frau Cornelia?
01:08:44Das ist das, was ich will.
01:08:45Warte mal.
01:08:46Warte mal.
01:08:47Warte mal.
01:08:48Die Killinge und die Killinge waren auf der Killinge?
01:08:49Ich habe es.
01:08:50Vielleicht war Frau Van Gorter.
01:08:52Sie niemals.
01:08:54Wir müssen schauen.
01:08:55Ich kann nicht.
01:08:57Ich kann nicht.
01:08:58Ich kann nicht.
01:08:59Es ist nichts.
01:09:00Es ist nichts.
01:09:01Warte mal.
01:09:02Warte mal.
01:09:03Ich bin.
01:09:04Ich bin.
01:09:05Miss Cornelia!
01:09:12Oh, Miss Van Goghler!
01:09:13Miss Cornelia! Miss Cornelia!
01:09:15Miss Van Goghler!
01:09:16Look, there's a light in that room on the third floor.
01:09:20Were you up there tonight?
01:09:21Well, of course I was, but I turned the lights out before I came downstairs.
01:09:24Miss Cornelia might have turned them on again.
01:09:26That's why we're going to look first. Come on!
01:09:35Miss Cornelia!
01:09:51Miss Cornelia!
01:09:54Miss Cornelia!
01:09:56Yes, Lizzie. I'm here.
01:09:58Miss Cornelia, come. Come to the mantel, please.
01:10:05Here we are, Miss Van Goghler. What do we do now?
01:10:07Over the mantel. There are five panels.
01:10:11Strike it with your hands.
01:10:17Which panel did you say, Miss Van Goghler?
01:10:19Oh, I can't. I just can't.
01:10:22Miss Van Goghler, what do you say, Miss Van Goghler?
01:10:25Miss Van Goghler, what do you say?
01:10:27Miss Van Goghler, which panel? We couldn't hear you.
01:10:29She said strike it. What difference does it make which panel?
01:10:32Strike them all!
01:10:37Look!
01:10:50Oh, it's all right now. It's all right, dear. Lizzie's here.
01:10:57You're feeling better? Yes, much better.
01:10:58We'll take you to your room.
01:10:59Oh, no, you won't. I'm going to stay right here. I'm quite all right.
01:11:00Oh, how blizzard it is to breathe without an effort. You know, no one knows how sweet the air can taste until someone shuts it off for a moment. That room is just like a box. When the mantelpiece closed, it seemed like all the air was drawn out of it. Look, there it goes again.
01:11:12Let it close. I can open it from in here. There's a control panel behind this blueprint. Electric motor under the trap door here. Once the door is open, you can keep it that way. I believe that the fireplace in this other room isn't.
01:11:27opens the same way. And it does.
01:11:28For me sake. I tried to find this, but I couldn't find it.
01:11:29Yeah, it's back at this blueprint here. Well, it's quite a set up. Too bad we can't open that set up.
01:11:34Too bad we can't open that safe in the same way.
01:11:58Pick an expert to crack this box or a shot of nitro.
01:12:02Maybe that's what the bat had in mind.
01:12:05Could be. Seems he's on the prowl tonight.
01:12:07Miss Van Gorda, Warner has disappeared.
01:12:10And Dr. Wells has been murdered.
01:12:12Dr. Wells?
01:12:13Lieutenant Anderson's on that case right now.
01:12:16Well, does he know what's happened here tonight?
01:12:18They got word to him. He'll be here any minute.
01:12:28What's that noise?
01:12:33Miss Van Gorda, the garage is on fire.
01:12:35Scott, look at that.
01:12:37Miss Abe, put that light on the other room.
01:12:39Now, where are you going?
01:12:40To report the fire.
01:12:41Well, you've just stayed right here.
01:12:43Miss Van Gorda, the garage.
01:12:44Well, let it burn. You watch the stair.
01:12:46Can't you see that fire was set to get us out of the house?
01:12:48Out of the house? Were you talking about the...
01:12:50Yes, yes, I'm talking about the bat.
01:12:53Now that the lights are out, he'll think his trick has worked,
01:12:55and we've gone. He'll be here any minute.
01:12:57So will Lieutenant Anderson.
01:12:58I hope so, for the battle to hear first.
01:13:00And he'll kill again if we're in his way.
01:13:03We've got to be as clever as he is.
01:13:27But he'll be here.
01:13:31Thank you.
01:13:32Thank you.
01:13:34Thank you.
01:13:35Vielen Dank.
01:14:05But you'll be safer downstairs.
01:14:15I'll take care of you.
01:14:16Well, the others can go, but I'm going to stay right here.
01:14:18All right, but get out of sight.
01:14:35Let's face it, ladies, and get it over with.
01:14:48Others have seen my face before they died,
01:14:50but I'll have to deny you that pleasure.
01:14:53This would make a good scene for your book, Miss Van Gorder,
01:14:56but I'm afraid you'll never write it.
01:14:58Now, that is Warner.
01:15:05I could tell.
01:15:10You misjudge me, Miss Ellen.
01:15:12What?
01:15:15I don't like being a murder suspect, Miss Van Gorder.
01:15:19I was headed for a plane, but halfway to the airport,
01:15:22I changed my mind and came back.
01:15:23I'm glad that I did.
01:15:39Why, it's Lieutenant Anderson.
01:15:40Yes, it was Anderson.
01:15:49He discovered the secret of the hidden room
01:15:51and was waiting to get into it
01:15:53and open up the safe.
01:15:56We found the money in it,
01:15:58a little over a million in tens and twenties and hundreds.
01:16:01Good old Andy.
01:16:07With all his ill-gotten gains invested in bank stock,
01:16:11it's rather a clever way to hide stolen money,
01:16:14in the open, as it were,
01:16:17and so respectable.
01:16:20But don't try it.
01:16:23No matter how clever you are,
01:16:26you can't hide murder.
01:16:29Well, that's it, Deb.
01:16:40That's the end.
