00:00St James's Park
00:30tomorrow's match against PSV Eindhoven.
00:33If you have a question, please get my attention and we'll come to as many of you as we possibly can.
00:38If you need translation, there should be headsets available for you as well.
00:41Who wants to get us started, please?
00:43Keith.
00:44Hi Eddie, good to see you.
00:46You've reached the business end of the group stage in the Champions League,
00:51some terrific nights.
00:54Given your schedule, how important would it be for you to try and get one of those top eight places
00:59and stop yourself having to play in the playoffs?
01:02Yeah, it would be nice.
01:04But I think we just relish the two games that we have to come.
01:09I think the best way to answer that question is to try and win the next two games in front of us,
01:16starting with tomorrow's game, which is a great game for us, really magical game I think.
01:21Very good team, been very impressed with all the research we've done on them
01:26and how they've been playing and their recent results.
01:29So it's set up to be a great game, I think.
01:31How are you looking injury-wise?
01:33We saw Dan Burnett in training this morning,
01:36I think on Friday you said he was back running,
01:38looked like he was doing a bit of ball work.
01:39Is there any chance of either him or Will Assoula for this game tomorrow?
01:43Making really good progress, Dan.
01:45We anticipated the journey back that he's had,
01:51he's pretty much stuck to the timelines we expected,
01:54he won't make tomorrow, it's too early.
01:56Same with Will Assoula, today was their first day with the team,
02:00or first day with the team, should I say, but hopefully not too far away.
02:04If you can give the mic to Luke Edwards, please.
02:14Hi, it's been a slightly strange season in many respects across the Premier League,
02:18but I saw an interesting stat that I think since the last international break
02:22you've actually taken 21 points, which puts you third in the form table,
02:26does that put things into context a little bit of how well you're doing this season?
02:31Or in this period?
02:32Yeah, I think I've said many times,
02:34and people always raise their eyebrows when I start talking, generally anyway.
02:40But I think since that international break that you mentioned,
02:43the Manchester City game, I think being the first game after the break,
02:47I've seen an upturn in performances generally.
02:49I think we've been much more consistent since that break.
02:53In that break we did a lot of work,
02:55probably the only time we've been able to train in recent months.
02:58I was really pleased with the response of the players,
03:02how they focused on the things that we identified that we needed to improve.
03:08Yeah, we've not been perfect, there's been the odd game here and there
03:11where we haven't performed to the level that we want to,
03:14but generally much better, much more like ourselves, scoring goals again.
03:18So, yeah, I've been pretty pleased.
03:20I think the challenge for us is now to maintain that.
03:23Thank you. Lee Ryder?
03:24Eddie, this game always brings back memories of Sir Bobby Robson.
03:28How important is it to talk about the values that he brings to the club?
03:32Because I know you've got the portrait at the training ground
03:34when you walk in every morning,
03:35so could you just talk a little bit about those values that you like to maintain?
03:39Yeah, well aware of the history with Sir Bobby and we were before the Barcelona game as well.
03:45I think the values that he stood for, hard work, good organisation,
03:50always going to the end, never giving up,
03:54trying to do the crowd justice, representing the club in the right way.
04:00I think these are all values that he stood for,
04:03and he wanted teams to fully commit to the crowd
04:10and to give everything on a match day,
04:12and that's what we're going to try and do.
04:13We've been trying to live by those principles from day one since I arrived here,
04:17very similar to Kevin Keegan's principles as well,
04:20and he was maybe more expansive in his way of playing and really wanted to attack,
04:25and we're trying to live by those principles,
04:27so I think that's what the crowd wants to see.
04:29Can I just quickly check as well, there's talk in Brazil about Newcastle
04:32have made some kind of approach for Ryan,
04:35who's been linked with Bournemouth as well,
04:37can I just check if there's any truth in that?
04:39There's no truth in that. Thank you.
04:41George Corkin, please.
04:47Hi, Eddie. We're speaking to Sven after you,
04:50and just on his contract,
04:53he's obviously a very important player in his own right,
04:55so it's good news in his own right,
04:57but just after what happened with Alex in the summer,
05:01how important was it, or how important is it,
05:05that a big player has committed himself to the club, to the project,
05:08not just to you but for the fans, for the club in general and the dressing room?
05:12Yeah, I think it's really important that when we enter those negotiations,
05:17the players that you're discussing terms with have a good feel for their football club,
05:23for us that work with them every day, for the supporters, for the ownership,
05:27that they feel this is the right place for them to continue their development and their journey.
05:32Really pleased that Sven feels that way about the football club, I think.
05:38It's been a tough few months for him.
05:40Difficult injury problems, setbacks.
05:44He's had to show real strength of character because he's someone that always wants to play,
05:48he's desperate to help the team.
05:50He's very ambitious, determined, he's got great qualities as well,
05:54and I think we really, really missed him.
05:56It took us a long time to adjust to being without him,
05:58so then to get him back was a massive lift,
06:01and I think now we're seeing the very early sign's been returning to his best level,
06:05so hopefully that can stay the same for many years to come.
06:12Hi Eddie, the expanded format has been derided to a degree
06:15because of the number of teams that go through,
06:17because you have got that safety net,
06:19but as a coach can you just tell us what the difference is
06:21between the top eight and not being in the top eight?
06:24How big an incentive is that to get in there?
06:29Yeah, it's a massive incentive because it means less games in a season
06:32when we're being stretched physically, mentally,
06:37it's a big demand on us,
06:39so we could let the priorities to qualify,
06:42however we do that, whether that's extra games,
06:44whether that's in the top eight is obviously our wish,
06:47so we're striving with every game to maximise what we can deliver,
06:51I think the Marseille game still hurts us a little bit
06:55because we were in a really strong position in that game
06:58and I thought it was a decent performance,
07:02and we could look back on those types of games with a little bit of regret,
07:06but not in terms of effort and endeavour to try and qualify,
07:11and we've got two games that we need to, as I said earlier,
07:14commit to every game and try and win every game and see where it takes us.
07:18This is Dutch TV, hello.
07:20What are your views on PSV?
07:22They of course won against Liverpool just two months ago.
07:25Yeah, very good, very good coach,
07:28really good team to watch I think,
07:32I've enjoyed planning the game,
07:34they're expansive,
07:36I like to build from the back,
07:39they've got some ideas that are slightly different,
07:42which I always enjoy,
07:44watching something that's slightly out of the ordinary,
07:46but they impressed me,
07:48watching the games against Liverpool as you say,
07:50I thought they were very strong that night,
07:52Atletico Madrid,
07:53I thought they were outstanding and really unlucky not to win.
07:55So I think that's the level of team we're playing against.
07:59Always a strong team in Europe anyway, historically,
08:02so we'd be ready for a good game.
08:05The gentleman back row on the inside, please.
08:08Hello and good afternoon, this is Bennett van Vesteren from the Dutch media as well.
08:17I was wondering how would you describe the development of Sven Bobman
08:21and how important is he for your team?
08:23Yeah, I think Sven when he first came to the club was a sort of an instant hit with us,
08:29pretty much came into the team straight away,
08:32I think it took him sort of seven, eight games to break through.
08:35But his early form in that first season was magnificent,
08:39I think he was part of a back four that conceded very few goals,
08:42part of a team that suffered very few defeats,
08:44so I think he adapted to life in the Premier League very quickly.
08:47Unfortunately, we've lost him for a period of time due to injury
08:51and that's been the hardest part of his time here.
08:54But we're delighted to have him back now
08:56and hopefully he can get back to the form of when he was at his very best.
09:01Because for me, when he was at that level,
09:03he was one of the best defenders in the Premier League without a doubt.
09:06OK, we'll go to Daniel Martin and then Scott please.
09:12Excuse me Eddie, building on a previous question,
09:14despite the inconsistencies this season,
09:16some of the performances that haven't been to your sort of standard,
09:19is your narrative the one you would want to project that you are still
09:22just a couple of points away from the top five,
09:24you're within touching distance of getting through to the next stage in Europe
09:27and domestic cup-wise you're still within a shout there
09:30and that actually the end to this season can be as positive as other ones have been as well.
09:35Yeah, I've said many times I'm glass half full.
09:39I think at this stage of the season with everything that's ahead of us,
09:44we have to be very, very positive.
09:46Of course this is a key month and I've said that right at the beginning of it,
09:49in terms of our Premier League form which has been good to this point.
09:55We're still in the FA Cup and now we enter two really huge games in the Champions League.
10:02So I think these next two games obviously will dictate a lot.
10:07I think this first game, being at home, big onus on us to attack the game,
10:13to try and get the result we need to put us in a much better place.
10:17That's the only focus in my brain right now.
10:20So, yeah, I think we know this is going to be a big one.
10:23Martin Hardy, please. Sorry, thank you.
10:26Goals have come easier in the Champions League this season than the Premier League.
10:30Is there a reason for that?
10:32No, I don't know. Sometimes these things happen.
10:39Yeah, I think we've done well in certain games in the Champions League.
10:45I don't know, you can see from the players there's a real stimulation about these games,
10:50there's a real focus, you can see it from the training and the preparation,
10:55but you can also just see it from the body language of the players.
10:57I think they really want to do well in every competition,
11:00but I think there's a special feeling about this for obvious reasons.
11:03So I think that plays a part.
11:06I think we have some really good attacking players
11:09and I think some of the games have suited us in terms of playing really high-intensity games
11:14and with the atmosphere here has really helped us as well.
11:16So I think there's a few conditions that we hope will line up in our favour
11:20and this will be similar. In a home game we want a really good atmosphere,
11:23we want the players athletically to feel really good
11:26and hopefully the combination of that and the crowd can make it a really positive night for us.
11:31Go to Scott Wilson and then to Dominic Skurr please.
11:34Hi Eddie, you're obviously a very different team to the team that didn't make it through two seasons ago,
11:39we know the changes that have happened since then.
11:42Do you think you're a better team now or do you think that you're a team that's still
11:46kind of learning its way and growing given that it is different and it has had to change?
11:52I don't know, I don't tend to necessarily directly compare the two teams, you're asking me to do so.
12:01I'd say we're different, I don't know whether we're better or worse,
12:04that's really difficult to judge.
12:06Certainly there's been a changeover of some of the personnel
12:10and that's made us the team that we are today,
12:15in the sense that some of the individuals are slightly different in their profile.
12:18I think we're very effective, when we're at our best I think we're a highly effective team
12:22and I think we've always been that way, even two years ago,
12:24in a sense that we're not necessarily looking for a team that dominates possession,
12:29but we want to be effective when we do have it.
12:31We want to be incisive and we want to be creating chances
12:34and I think that's been much better overall in recent weeks.
12:38Defensively we've been really solid at times this season,
12:41not the whole time, over the whole piece of the season we've had moments of fragility,
12:47but hopefully we're building that back up again with the clean sheet at the weekend.
12:51A very different team, but one that I think is growing to get better.
12:56We'll try and squeeze three more and we'll start with Dominic,
12:58we'll go to Mark Douglas and Kieran Kelly to finish, please.
13:01Hi Eddie, with less than two weeks left of the transfer window,
13:04is Dan Byrne and Will Asula returning after a decent period out,
13:08as close as we'll get to new signings in the squad this week?
13:12I don't know, certainly they will feel like new signings for us,
13:16especially Dan because there's a real positional need there,
13:19and that's not a slight on Will Asula at all,
13:22we're delighted to have him back in training, he's going to be a big player for us.
13:25But Dan's return with being so light in that position is a huge lift,
13:29if we can keep him fit and feeling good, he will be like a new signing.
13:33But there's still time and it's still relatively unknown in terms of what direction we will take.
13:39Anthony Gordon, somebody who said he lives for this stage,
13:44what have you made of his season so far and are you looking to him
13:47in these next two Champions League games to continue his form in this competition?
13:52We're looking for every player to really step up in these kind of games
13:55and that's what I said after the Wolves game,
13:57we were looking for someone to really try and grab that game
14:00and make the difference and find a way to score to win us that match
14:03and that's sometimes what you're looking for,
14:05the individual attacking players that can really make the difference.
14:08Unfortunately, that didn't happen for us.
14:11But yeah, we want all the attacking players to rise to this occasion.
14:15Anthony, I think, has had some really high points of the season,
14:19mainly in the Champions League, so yeah, he's a big player for us.
14:23Last one, Kieran, please.
14:24Just on a similar theme, whoever plays up front,
14:26what do you think is the key to getting more out of Nick or indeed Johan?
14:30Well, I think there's an individual expectation
14:34that they have to max out on the pitch and give their all.
14:37I think if they do that, they've both got stand-up qualities that will help us,
14:40whichever one we pick, as you say.
14:42So I think all we can ask from them is they give their absolute all for the team.
14:46And then, of course, the team needs to create moments for them
14:48to hopefully decide the game.
14:50Thank you, everyone. See you tomorrow. Cheers.
14:52Cheers.
14:53Thank you. Thanks a lot.
14:54Cheers.
14:55Cheers.
14:56Cheers.
14:57D
15:24No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
15:54All right, guys, we've got about 15 minutes with Sven.
16:00Catch my eye if you want to ask a question.
16:02We will start with Keith Downey, please.
16:04Hi, Sven, good to see you.
16:05We've not spoken to you since you signed your new deal,
16:09I think, what, last week, was it?
16:12What's the thinking behind committing to Newcastle United
16:15and what is your peak years, your 26 now,
16:18for the next four or five years?
16:20Well, I definitely feel like I have a lot to give still.
16:24And I also think this club has huge potential.
16:28Like I said before, I just love to be part of it,
16:32love to achieve great success with the club
16:36and with myself as well.
16:38So, yeah, that was the main thing, really.
16:40You've obviously, the last year or two,
16:44had your injury problems.
16:46And obviously, I'm guessing it's been
16:47a pretty frustrating time for you.
16:49We just spoke to the manager there who says
16:51that we're seeing the very early signs of Sven being back to his best.
16:57Are you confident we're going to get back to seeing
16:59the Sven-Bottmann that we saw two years ago
17:02and that brilliant defence that hardly conceded any goals?
17:04Yeah, that's definitely where I'm striving off.
17:08I think with a great first season as well as a defence,
17:11like you said,
17:12that's just something that I admired all my time
17:18when I'm a defender to have clean sheets.
17:21And yeah, it's definitely something I want to achieve more.
17:24And yeah, like I said, with the injuries,
17:26it was a difficult time.
17:28Even when I came back from my ACL,
17:31I played a few games and then had another injury.
17:36So, yeah, it was a difficult sort of two years for me.
17:38But yeah, I feel like I'm getting back to full fitness,
17:44getting back to great form
17:46and most importantly, just be fit and playing games
17:51and enjoying that.
17:53We'll go to Lee Ryder, please, then.
17:55George Colkin.
17:58Hi, Sven.
18:01Just on coming back from injury,
18:04I mean, obviously you've had some low moments.
18:06How much joy do you get now
18:07when you're stepping out on the pitch for a game like this
18:09and hearing that Champions League music
18:11against a Dutch team as well?
18:13Yeah, loads.
18:15I mean, the time you're injured,
18:17everything you think about is just coming back,
18:21playing on the pitch again in front of these fans
18:24and in this stadium.
18:26and it always gives you a great feeling,
18:29an amazing feeling that you're playing with such a high stage.
18:33And yeah, it's never nice to be injured.
18:39But like I said, it's in the past now.
18:40I'm looking forward to what's coming
18:42and starting off tomorrow, yeah.
18:47Georgian, the lady next to Georgian.
18:49Hi, Sven.
18:49Hi.
18:50What is it specifically about what's happening here
18:52that you want to be part of
18:54and what do you think you can achieve
18:56over the course of your contract?
18:57Well, I think the moment when I stepped to these doors,
19:02what is it, three and a half years ago,
19:04yeah, if you look at that sort of moment,
19:08what we achieved now in the last couple of years,
19:11I think this crop is just growing every year.
19:15We've achieved already great things, I think,
19:17but we definitely want to have more.
19:22The trophy was really nice last season
19:24and we definitely want to have more trophies
19:26and we're definitely setting a goal for ourselves
19:31to be in the Champions League sports
19:33every single season.
19:35and that's what we aim for.
19:36I think with the group we're having,
19:39there should be what we're achieving every season.
19:42And yeah, I just think from what we achieved
19:47in the last couple of years with the years coming,
19:51yeah, just looking forward for that
19:54and like I said, looking also forward to be part of that.
20:02Hi, Sven.
20:03This is Eline from NOS.
20:05Goeiedag.
20:06Je trainer noemde je net in vorm
20:07een van de beste verdedigers van de Premier League.
20:10Hoe ben jij hier gegroeid
20:11en wat maakt dat deze club zo goed bij jou past?
20:16Ik denk dat sowieso de Premier League
20:18heel erg fysiek is
20:22en sowieso het beste en het uiterste vraagt
20:26van elke speler.
20:27Het gaat op ontzettend hoog tempo
20:29en ja, ik denk dat dat gewoon goed bij mij past
20:33en zeker deze club.
20:34We spelen heel aanvallend voetbal.
20:52Morgen tegen PSV, Nederlandse club natuurlijk.
21:17Oh mijn god.
21:18Ja, dat was bij de Nederlandse afdaging.
21:23Dat was wel een raar weekje voor ons.
21:27We werden toen allebei heel erg ziek
21:29dat we bij de Nederlandse afdaging zaten.
21:30Dat is niet top, nee.
21:33Morgen dus weer een weersien
21:34en over Oranje gesproken.
22:14dat we winnen.
22:16Dat is het belangrijkste
22:17en natuurlijk hopen we dat op een mooie manier te doen,
22:21maar winnen is het belangrijkste.
22:22Craig, Daniel Wales
22:25en Martin Hardy, please.
22:26Hi Sven, het is twee questions
22:27op dezelfde subject.
22:29Are you surprised
22:29dat je niet hebt gehaald
22:30bij Holland of Nederland
22:32zo verhaal?
22:33Wat heb je gehaald
22:34om dat te doen?
22:35Wat heb je gehaald?
22:36Nou, ik heb natuurlijk een moeilijke spijl
22:39met mijn injuringen.
22:42Ik denk dat ik een goede moment had.
22:44Ik was in de squad een paar keer

24:34Hi Sven, you train regularly with Johan Wieser and Nick Valdemar,
24:41how good are they and is the best still to come for both players?
24:45Yeah, they're both great players.
24:48Is the best still to come? Yes, because every player is growing here as a player
24:55and they both need to get adapted to the tactics, to how we play,
25:02and the team has to adapt to them as well.
25:05It doesn't take just a few days or a few weeks,
25:09but we definitely see some great things from both players.
25:14Hi Sven, I'm going to congratulate you on your contract.
25:17You describe Joey Vierman as one of your best friends.
25:20Then you came in the line?
25:22In the line?
25:23Yes, I know.
25:24What has he said?
25:26You know him a little bit.
25:29He's got a chance to say he's going to win.
25:33He's going to win three points.
25:35Yes, he's going to say he's going to win three points.
25:37Yes, he's going to say that he's going to win three points.
25:39Yes, he's going to win three points.
25:40Yes.
25:41Are you going to be a little bit more than PSV?
25:42Yes, we know what we're going to do.
25:44Yes, we know what we're going to do.
25:47I've got a few questions about what PSV's team is.
25:53Of course, we've seen all the West against Liverpool.
25:57We know that they're in a good shape this season.
26:01In the competition, in the Champions League,
26:03we've seen great things.
26:05We've got to be able to win three points.
26:06We've got to be able to win three points.
26:08We've got to be able to win three points.
26:10Yes, as you said,
26:12your trainer is going to be one of the best players in the Premier League.
26:15When you're on your best.
26:17The competition for the Netherlands is very impressive.
26:19When you look at what the players are playing from Ake, Timber, Van Dijk in the Premier League.
26:24How do you look at the competition for the summer?
26:28Yes, I'm not too much.
26:33As I said, I'm at this point just a lot of fun to play a lot.
26:40To be fit and stay fit.
26:44It's something that you're in your mind.
26:48I believe in that I'm there at home.
26:52But I also believe that I've been in the past a lot and that there are a lot of good players in the Premier League.
27:02That's to me to show that I'm there more at home than others.
27:08That's all about myself.
27:10I don't have a lot of pressure on it and I don't have a lot of pressure on it.
27:13Good pleasure.
27:14The gentleman on the back there, then Kieran Kelly please.
27:16Hi, good morning Sven.
27:18We've played a long time ago in the Netherlands.
27:20Can you follow the Eredivisie and how do you look at the dominant PSV?
27:25I don't look at the Netherlands anymore.
27:30But you get the same and the other way.
27:35You know that the PSV is a great season and that they're stiff.
27:43They play good football.
27:46And what I've already said, we've got to be able to win.
27:51Do you have a little bit of that?
27:53Because when you were in the Netherlands, the expectations were a bit different.
27:56Yes.
27:57Yes, of course.
27:58There have been a lot of changes in the past.
28:01But it was about five, six years ago.
28:04I'm going to be a young Ajax and I hope that Ajax will be back to the place where it is.
28:12But that's not even.
28:14But that's the other side.
28:15PSV does it great.
28:17It will be a great weekend tomorrow.
28:20Kieran, Gary and then Scott's finish, please.
28:23We know how strong Newcastle are at home.
28:25What do you think has been the difference away from home this season?
28:29Yes, sometimes it's hard to tell.
28:32You ask yourself as well and your teammates.
28:35The results definitely haven't been great away from home this season.
28:42We definitely want to change that.
28:47Yes, it's hard to put a finger on what really the reason is.
28:52I think we need to just have a better level away from home, be more consistent.
29:00We don't want to be a team that's only going to be good at home.
29:07Gary?
29:08Hi Sven.
29:09Given it's January, every day there's talk about transfers, etc.
29:13We know about PSI issues.
29:15Do the squad feel that they could benefit from a new face this month?
29:19Or is there enough here in the squad to still enjoy a really, really good end to the season
29:24without any new additions?
29:26I think we have a really good squad.
29:28Of course, we had some problems with injuries, especially in defence,
29:32but I think when everybody is fit we have a really strong squad.
29:37I don't see any reason why we...
29:42Maybe there's behind the scenes or maybe not,
29:45but me, myself, I don't see any reason why we have to sign now a new player.
29:51Scott, to finish, please.
29:53You mentioned the defensive injuries there, Sven.
29:56How difficult has it been to be a Newcastle defender this season?
30:00Because it seems like every game it's been a different back four.
30:02Every time we've spoken to Eddie it seems to be a different defender
30:06that's been out or injured or unavailable.
30:09How tough has that made it to be part of this defence this season?
30:14Well, I think we're used to each other, so at the end who is the back four
30:20doesn't really matter in terms of relationship.
30:23But sometimes in terms of load, fitness can be difficult for some players in certain moments.
30:31Sometimes it's not ideal, but we're all proud and happy to play for this club
30:40and we just give it all.
30:46Cheers, guys.
30:48Thank you very much.
30:50Good luck.
