00:47I was just this wide-eyed, like, actor kid.
00:53I had auditioned for so many Disney Channel things
00:56that I don't want to say you get jaded, but you just hope something sticks at a certain point.
01:02You're like, oh, wow, I got a call back on that thing.
01:05But I'm still sitting in here with, like, ten other girls, and, you know, you can hear them through the wall, like, hear the choices they're making.
01:11Like, it's a really strange, even as an adult, to audition for things.
01:15But I think about being, like, that really innocent child.
01:18Just walking into a room and putting yourself out there completely and being, like, very open and free to just want to please, you know?
01:25At the time, I was just like, I'll do whatever, you know?
01:29I remember one of the things they were like, what's your special trick?
01:32Like, what's your hidden talent?
01:34And I was like, I can walk really good on my hands.
01:37And I just turned my body upside down and started, like, walking around on my hands in the room, which is, like, such a crazy, like, my kids would do that now.
01:44And I was just a kid, you know?
01:46I always loved bed scenes, because I was usually really tired.
01:55And so I got to, like, have a rest in the bed.
01:59Lizzie, is that you?
02:02Because we don't need you anymore.
02:07We have it now.
02:09I think I could talk at nauseam about why it hit at the right moment, you know?
02:22I think she was just a super endearing girl that everybody could see themselves in, having the middle school experience, you know, that not everybody would talk about.
02:33She had, like, embarrassing parents, and she had a crush on the popular boy in school, and she had her two tight friends that, you know, they had ups and downs together.
02:43I think people just needed to see themselves.
02:47Whenever she tried to be someone different, it always, like, fell flat for her.
02:52And so her lesson was just always about being herself, which was, like, her mismatched clothes and her, like, multiple chopsticks in her hair.
03:00And, like, she was just her.
03:03And she was just doing her thing.
03:04And I think it inspired girls to feel like that was enough.
03:18Here we go.
03:19I'm just kidding, you wish.
03:21Have you ever seen such a beautiful night?
03:26I remember hating this green Isabella outfit so much.
03:30It's so funny that it's so iconic.
03:32The costumer from the movie made all of the outfits, like, original.
03:36It wasn't, like, a designer or anything.
03:38Unlike the TV show where, like, I picked all my clothes.
03:41There was a costumer, but it was, like, very influenced by me.
03:44Not so much in the movie.
03:46And, like, by the way, she crushed it.
03:48But being, like, a young teenage girl, I just remember not liking that lime green number at all.
03:54But I loved the brown wig.
04:08Oh, my gosh.
04:09Hannah Montana, she's a normal girl, but she's, like, a singer at night.
04:13So I think that Disney knew they were tapping into something when this, like, worked so well.
04:19And they were like, oh, the normal girl turning into a pop star.
04:21So I'm sure it was some source of inspiration.
04:25Are you sure you know how to drive this thing?
04:28This is Rome.
04:29Nobody knows how to drive.
04:31I never thought that all of these moments from the Lizzie McGuire movie would become so, like, iconic for people traveling to Rome.
04:45I think when you're just in the middle of something like that, you don't really realize what the reach will be.
04:51There also wasn't, like, the internet yet the way that we experience it now.
04:55So it's been fun to see this, like, take on so many legs and see so many people, like, visiting, like, the Trevi Fountain or wanting to ride on the back of a Vespa with, like, a boy, a cute little Italian boy.
05:06I think in the moment you're not, like, oh, this is going to be big, big stuff.
05:11You know what I mean?
05:12The stuff in Italy took so long to shoot because, one, everybody takes, like, a two-hour lunch break.
05:26And they also drink wine during lunch because that's, like, very normal there.
05:30Honestly chic.
05:31But at the time I was, like, a kid.
05:33And so there's so much in this movie that had to be, like, a body double or a this or a that because I was maybe, like, 14 or 15.
05:41I don't remember exactly.
05:42And, like, the restrictions on, like, how long you can work and all of that stuff.
05:46We were always just, like, begging to make our days, especially in Italy because it was just so, like, loosey-goosey.
05:53Me and Gordo, the almost kiss scene was, like, the last thing we shot.
05:59And it was on a soundstage.
06:00And I think I was really ready for it to be over.
06:04The kiss?
06:05No, no, not the kiss.
06:06Not the kiss.
06:07But just, like, all of it.
06:09It was just a lot.
06:10I was, like, ready to kind of move on and do different things.
06:13But I remember being, like, whoa, I just, like, filmed a feature film.
06:16And that was, like, a big deal.
06:18It was a mix of things.
06:19And also, very hard to recall because it was so long ago.
06:32Look, I am totally aware that this family doesn't value self-presentation in the same obsessive way that I do.
06:38Fine.
06:39Whatever.
06:40But one of my life goals, aside from being, like, a fashion guru, is to indicate to the local community that the Baker family actually owns a bar of soap.
06:48So, as self-appointed in-house rep of style and hygiene, I think I should be allotted at least five extra minutes in front of the mirror.
06:54Three.
06:55Done.
06:56Good. Now help your sister butter the toast.
06:58I think that was very fitting for how I was also in my life in the moment.
07:03Like, very sassy and, like, didn't want to get dirty and cared about boys and, you know, didn't want to be considered a kid.
07:10It was all just very fitting.
07:12And we're shooting our Christmas card today.
07:15What time's Nora coming over?
07:17Uh, she may not make it.
07:19She hardly ever comes home since she started dating that doorknob.
07:22Oh, she's stoned her so cute.
07:23She's got a doorknob.
07:24The man irons his jeans, Mom.
07:26Yeah, that's weird.

07:28I'll shoot it without her.
07:29I'll Photoshop her in.
07:30Steve was lovely and he would be, like, nearby but not, like, in the mix.
07:35And he would, like, just have his banjo.
07:37And I feel like that was a way of him to, like, decompress around, like, the chaos of all the kids and stuff.
07:43It was sweet.
07:44And then Bonnie Hunt is one of my dear, dear, dear, dear friends still to this day.
07:48And I love her so much.
07:56No more!
08:00A lot of thanks for coming back to me.
08:02I love eggs now.
08:03I hated eggs.
08:05And this made me absolutely disgusted.
08:07There was, like, eggs all over us for the whole day.
08:10And I was so grossed out.
08:11Like, I own chickens now and we have, like, fresh eggs every day.
08:14This was so gross as a teenager.
08:17I was, like, on set, like, gagging.
08:20But also, this was a really fun shoot.
08:23Where were we?
08:24Somewhere in, like, Oakland or Petaluma, California.
08:28That's where we were.
08:29Like, middle of nowhere.
08:31And all of the families of, like, all the kids would get together and go to the Applebee's every night after work.
08:36Because it was, like, one of the only restaurants there.
08:38And it was really fun.
08:40Not now.

08:57I'm sorry.

08:59This has been the most amazing night.

09:07I remember the producer was the same, I think, from Agent Cody Banks.
09:15And I remember, like, reading the script and just feeling like it was funny.
09:20You read a lot of bad scripts and this one was, like, I liked that it was Cinderella but, like, a modern, kind of normal version.
09:31And then Regina King was cast, which obviously was, like, super exciting.
09:34She's so amazing.
09:35And Jennifer Coolidge and, obviously, Chad Michael Murray.
09:38I think everyone had a crush on him.
09:40And then he went off to film frickin' One Tree Hill.
09:43It was still hot.
09:44I was like, I did a movie with him.
09:47Also, my four-year-old has watched this movie and also picked up on, like, how could he not know it's you in that mask?
09:53And I was like, it's the age-old question, honey.
09:57And she's like, but it's you.
09:59You're right there.

10:01How does he not know?
10:02I'm like, I know.

10:21She scared me a little bit, I think, as a teenager.
10:24She was so confident and so in character.
10:28I wouldn't say that she was, like, method because she definitely was, like, normal on set at times,
10:34but she would, like, slip into this and it was just so amazing to watch.
10:39But, like, I remember there was this one scene where she was, like, rubbing salmon on her face.
10:44Is this Norwegian salmon that I asked for?
10:46Because I need my omega-3s.
10:48Only the best.
10:49It was wild.
10:50Like, she was such a larger-than-life character and she was so mean that I remember just being, like, a little scared.
10:57When I find her, I'm gonna ring her.

11:04Sam, what are you doing back there?
11:07Um, just working on my cooking skills.
11:09It felt like she was talking to me.
11:11I remember being like, oh my god, I'm not pretty and I'm not smart.
11:14But she wasn't.
11:15There's also parts of this movie that are so not, like, acceptable anymore.
11:19If you watch some of the scenes back, you're like, wait, what?
11:23It is crazy!
11:25It is, the times have changed.
11:34We have a lot of ground to make up because of you.
11:36It's a good thing we're excellent at this.
11:39A ten hut!
11:41Let's do it.
11:43I haven't seen this movie in so long.
11:50And I don't know if I should say this or not, but I know that, like, the internet had this big thing that went on about, like,
11:56that this is, like, really, like, a lesbian love story.
11:59I'm just wondering why Disney didn't want to, like, follow up with the number two.
12:03Because 100% seems like it would have gone in a great direction for the sequel.
12:11We did so much rehearsal for this movie.
12:28That's the big takeaway that I get is, like, learning how to, like, hold the gun, spin the gun, do the tricks.
12:33Like, we were in a dance rehearsal space for so long learning how to, like, salute and, like,
12:40about face and do all these crazy things.
12:43And also it was so hot that there was, like, some scenes that had lots of cadets in, like, a big field.
12:50And people were just dropping like flies.
12:52It was really scary.
12:53I think because when your legs are locked and you're, like, hot and wearing all those clothes and stuff,
12:58you can pass out.
12:59And people did.
13:00And that was really, really scary.
13:17Guess who got the money, honey?
13:19I am obsessed with this scene.
13:22I was more disappointed in Liza's ending.
13:25I mean, I like that she chose herself, but I always had big feelings around who she should have ended up with.
13:31I choose them both for certain reasons, but so much happened.
13:35I think I maybe would have liked to see a new person show up and her, like, actually be settled and, like, find love in a new person.
13:42I feel like it ended abruptly.
14:03We shot this at the very end of the day.
14:05This was the last shot and we had, like, 12 minutes.
14:08So I, like, always love that they'll be like, oh, this really important shot is going to be the last one of the day.
14:13I was surprised we even got this, but I'm so happy we did.
14:16But this was a real, like, crazy whirlwind of, like, we have to literally exit the building in, like, 12 minutes.
14:23And we walked into, like, this little tiny box of a room and ran through this maybe, like, one and a half times.
14:30And this is also my own personal coat.
14:33It's a Dries coat that I bought and I had it worn.
14:36And I was so happy to get to use it.
14:52Working with my husband felt like the only choice for me, to be honest.
14:56He has a front row seat to my life and has for almost 10 years.
15:01And he knows everything about me and everything that's, like, happened along the way.
15:07And so it just felt like a really safe space to creatively make a body of work that is me, you know, that has me all over it and helped me to fill in the gaps, you know, of, like, the 10 years that I haven't done music.
15:28Music is such an amazing way to connect with people.
15:31And I really just felt like after 10 years of creating my family and putting energy into other places, I was ready to share and be more, like, forward facing and talk about who I am and what I've gone through and kind of, like, what makes me tick or the things that bounce around inside my head and drive me crazy and, you know, connect with people on that level again.
15:51I have to give a lot of credit to Matt for this one because he sits in the studio and, like, pushes buttons all day long and he's so, like, naturally musically gifted that, like, I can't go in and be like, I'm imagining this thing and it's like this.
16:19Like, he speaks my language so he understands what I'm talking about.
16:22I can just be like, I don't like that.
16:24I want more of that.
16:25You know, I get to, like, interior design, which is great.
16:28And it's also really important to me that my sound sounds like me.
16:33I wasn't really listening to too many other artists at the time because I want my lane to sound like my lane and I want my topics to sound like things that are affecting me at the time or something that I carry with me from my past.
16:48There's definitely nods to my previous work but also wanting it to just sound like good pop music.
16:57There's nothing that surprises me that the internet hasn't dug up and the legs that they continue to carry is abundant and honestly really fun.
17:13Like, I had a great time working on movies and TV shows and honestly it's nice that everybody can have a better memory of it than me.
