00:00Garden waste collections are not being reintroduced in Birmingham for the time being,
00:05as the ongoing bin strike continues to disrupt services across the city.
00:10The seasonal service was suspended last spring because of industrial action,
00:14and with the dispute now entering its second year, the council says it cannot yet bring collections
00:20back. Birmingham City Council has acknowledged the frustration many residents are feeling,
00:26particularly as the warmer months approach when garden waste typically increases.
00:31Councillor Majid Mahmood, the Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport,
00:36said the authority recognises residents have been without the service for a year
00:40and shares that frustration. He said reintroducing garden waste collections remains a priority,
00:47but added it would need to be considered as part of wider changes to the waste service.
00:52Planned reforms to Birmingham's waste management system, previously delayed by the strike,
00:57are now expected to be rolled out from June, regardless of whether industrial action is still
01:02ongoing. These changes form part of the council's recovery plan and include moving general waste
01:08collections from weekly to fortnightly. Weekly food waste collections are also due to be introduced,
01:14alongside a second recycling bin for paper and cardboard. While garden waste collections remain
01:21suspended, residents are being encouraged to consider composting at home or taking green waste to household
01:28recycling centres.
