00:00Out off of South East Minton Street, there was a body that was found in the house, okay?
00:04We're able to say that it is a captain, okay?
00:07I'm so sorry for your loss, sir.
00:09This is 28-year-old John Blauvelt, learning that his missing wife was discovered
00:15in an abandoned house, brutally murdered, surrounded by satanic markings.
00:20However, John had a disturbing secret he couldn't tell the interviewer that day.
00:26I might burn down.
00:31Using his military experience, he carried out a near-perfect murder
00:36that kept detectives one step behind for years.
00:40By the time investigators began to narrow in on him, John was already long gone,
00:46living in a new state, in a new house, running away with his 17-year-old girlfriend,
00:52and seemingly getting away for good.
00:56This defies any kind of logic that I have experienced in my 62 years on this earth.
01:02We know more than you think we do.
01:04What if I told you that your cell phone did ping somewhere other than where you say you were?
01:08It's 2.15 p.m. on October 24th, 2016.
01:1922-year-old Katie Blauvelt is captured on CCTV inside her workplace.
01:24Her shift is soon coming to an end, and she's planning to meet her mother at 3 p.m. that same day.
01:30She leaves, calls her mother, and takes a selfie, unaware it's the last photo she ever takes.
01:38Not long after, her phone pings a location for the last time, and Katie disappears without a trace.
01:47Five hours passed by.
01:49It's now 7 p.m., and Katie never arrived for dinner with her mother.
01:54Worried, the mother and other family members try calling her multiple times, but her phone has no signal.
02:01At 7.48 p.m., Katie's mother reports her missing.
02:06Officers, friends, and family mobilize to look for her, and the search officially begins.
02:12But this left detectives with a critical five-hour gap in the timeline,
02:16one they would spend months trying to piece together.
02:1910 hours would go past without any clues about Katie's whereabouts.
02:27Then, at 12.33 a.m., the police receive an unexpected call.
02:32One of Katie's friends is on the line, claiming he's just found her body dead inside an abandoned house deep in a nearby forest.
02:41Sinceville 911, what's the location of your emergency?
02:45Um, I'm in that, uh, Discover Church across from it, in the woods.
02:50You're in, you're at Discover Church across from where?
02:53Um, in the woods, across from it.
02:56You're in, I mean, I was worried about my friend, uh, Katie, and she, she went missing.
03:02She's been missing for a while now.
03:04And, uh, she came in this house that we used to have all hanging out in, and, uh, um, she, she's been missing.
03:11She smelled a lot.
03:14Quickly, medics and police rush to the address of an abandoned house deep in the woods.
03:19Upon arriving at the scene, officers notice multiple graffiti markings, including apparent satanic symbols.
03:26Soon after, they identify the caller as Wayne Roper, a friend of Katie, who leads them into the basement of the abandoned house.
03:35There, officers find a large concrete box sealed with plywood.
03:40When they remove the cover, they're met with a horrifying sight.
03:44Katie's body lies inside, with a knife pierced through her neck and 16 stab wounds across her body.
03:52The lack of struggle in the state of her clothing, with her shirt pulled up and her lower clothes missing, suggested a sexually motivated killing.
04:02All of these details point detectives straight to Wayne as their first potential suspect.
04:08But, what they don't realize is that this is exactly what the killer wants them to think.
04:14Every detail of the scene has been arranged to send them chasing the wrong lead.
04:21Without realizing it, detectives have walked straight into the killer's setup.
04:28As the night went on, forensics revealed chilling details.
04:31Katie's body had been dragged to the basement and her phone was found submerged in water to destroy it.
04:38Wayne is detained and brought in for questioning.
04:41At the moment, detectives believe they have their killer and they're ready to push for a confession.
04:46At this point, Wayne believes he's been brought in to be questioned as a witness after the heartbreaking discovery.
05:05Unaware that detectives are already convinced about his involvement in the murder and any statement he makes might be used against him.
05:12I think you know why you're here, right?
05:14Yeah.
05:15Okay.
05:16Um, tell me, uh, tell me how, how did you meet Katie?
05:20Just from the time you met her, kind of what your relationship was, and leave you up until, you know, 11.30 or so last night, okay?
05:28I first met her, we were friends at first, and then we dated for like a month or so, and then that's whenever I moved to Liberty with my dad.
05:42And we stayed in contact for a little bit, and then once I left my dad and went to North Carolina, we lost contact.
05:49Okay.
05:50Detectives begin the interview by learning that Wayne and Katie were once together, but quickly, Wayne reveals something that would immediately put suspicion onto his name.
06:00Maybe, uh, uh, maybe, uh, uh, a year later that Katie got married to John Lawville, and, uh, then one night, uh, she came and, uh, got with us with, uh, John.
06:17It was the first time I've seen her since I moved.
06:21And since then, um, um, um, John offered me to move in with them, the roommate, being, uh, $200 a month.
06:30Right.
06:31And, uh, I took it up, it was a big deal.
06:34So you lived with her and her husband?
06:37Mm-hmm.
06:38Yeah, it was, it was.
06:40When was this, do you remember when this was?
06:42When I lived with him?
06:44Um, it was before June this year.
06:48As Wayne explains that he once dated Katie, and later lived with her and her husband, detectives gain another reason to suspect him.
06:56Jealousy.
06:57And just as everything appears to be moving in the perfect direction for the real killer and his carefully constructed plan, Wayne makes a claim that complicates the investigation.
07:07And may just be enough to ruin the killer's plan.
07:11Living there, everything, like, going okay, you know, then they started having arguments because of me, because, uh, she used to talk about me before.
07:22And, uh, she told me that, uh, he was jealous of me.
07:27And, uh, their arguments were even worse.
07:31And, uh, that was whenever he got drunk one night and, uh, he cussed her out and he had her in the bathroom.
07:41Uh, they were just pretty much just screaming at each other.
07:44And then from there, she ended up, uh, moving back with her mom, I think.
07:53When did you and Katie's, when you were living with John and Katie, were you all being intimate with each other?
08:02Um, it was one of those.
08:03And John was there or not there?
08:04He was there.
08:05Yeah, it was like a three something.
08:06And how did that come about?
08:07Um, I was drunk and, he was drunk and, you know, survived and, like, after that, like, he just, he changed.
08:23If true, Wayne's claims about John's violent behavior could shift suspicion towards him.
08:28But, despite Wayne's accusations, something still doesn't add up.
08:33His story, with its inconsistencies and gaps, keeps raising suspicions.
08:38Because prior to this interrogation, detectives learned that on the day of Katie's death, Wayne arrived late to work and he admits to walking near the abandoned house around the time Katie disappeared.
08:48More importantly, while at work, Wayne was aware that Katie might be inside that very house.
08:54Yet, despite that suspicion, he never alerted authorities.
08:58Instead, he waited until the end of the day, went there himself and only then called the police.
09:04All of this places Wayne squarely in the crosshairs of investigators and unknowingly pushes them further into the real killer's trap.
09:13Because, in the next few minutes, the interview will take a terrifying turn as detectives unknowingly edge closer to forcing an innocent man into confession to a brutal murder that he never committed.
09:27With that said, let's get back to Wayne's interview where detectives are on the verge of pushing an innocent man into a murder confession.
09:35Why didn't you call the police?
09:39I didn't think of it at the time. I didn't know.
09:42Did you know she was dead?
09:43No.
09:44Why would you think that this idea is for you to walk into what turns out to be her final resting place where somebody murdered her and dumped her down there like a piece of trash?
09:58You know why you didn't look in the bathroom?
10:00We glanced in there.
10:01We glanced in there.
10:02The flashlight.
10:03But if you're stood at the door of it, you can see in there.
10:06You can't see in the tub.
10:08I'm telling you.
10:09I was up there in a day.
10:10Cause you...
10:11She wiped me in the tub!
10:12Just to find us any kind of logic that I have experienced in my 62 years on this earth.
10:19You look like you're gonna pass out.
10:21This is too much.
10:23I bet it is.
10:25You get enough of you then.
10:27I'm sure it is.
10:28What are you gonna do?
10:29Lay it down.
10:30Are you laying the burden down?
10:32That's the only way you can be forgiven.
10:34You gotta say, I missed that.
10:36Help me.
10:37That's what you're gonna say.
10:39Then I'll do it.
10:40But I'm not gonna do it on credit.
10:44Detectives remained suspicious of Wayne.
10:46But with him sticking to his story and no hard evidence, they couldn't yet arrest him.
10:51Instead, they collected his DNA sample to compare with the DNA found underneath Katie's fingernails.
10:57But that's when, just a few hours after Wayne's interview, as police search the area around the abandoned house, they stumble upon Katie's car, only a few miles from the crime scene, left abandoned in a nearby parking lot.
11:11It looked as if she had left in a hurry, but the reason her car ended up there would remain one of the biggest mysteries for the following months.
11:19Up to this point, everything was going according to the killer's plan.
11:24One designed and carried out by Katie's own husband, John Blauvelt.
11:30But Wayne's comments about his jealousy pushed detectives to dig deeper.
11:35What they found was a restraining order filed months earlier, after John had allegedly pulled a gun on Katie when she refused to give him her phone.
11:44For the first time, despite his efforts, officers were seriously beginning to suspect John.
11:51So the next day, on October 26th, detectives approach him at his office on the military base where he works.
11:58Their goal is simple.
12:00Hear his side of the story, verify his alibi for the day Katie died, and see how he reacts under pressure.
12:07For most perpetrators, this would be the moment everything starts to fall apart.
12:12But John isn't like the rest.
12:14He would play it perfectly.
12:17All right, well, there, out off of Southeast Main Street, there was a body that was found in a house.
12:24We had abandoned house.
12:26And at this point, we're able to say that it is caught in it, though.
12:31I'm so sad to be lost, sir.
12:34At this time, we are investigating.
12:38We would investigate every death the same way.
12:40We start with homicide and work our way from there, okay?
12:43What did the restraining order do?
12:46What was the deal with that?
12:47This was a charge that I got back in February.
12:52Domestic violence first degree.
12:54Do you know if she had any issues with anybody?
12:56Anybody that wouldn't hurt her or anything like that?
12:58No, and I just, I know that she's been dating around and, you know, it's whatever, because I've been too.
13:04Notice how John intentionally directs detectives towards the fact that Katie is dating around.
13:10Him pointing this out isn't a coincidence.
13:13It's a strategy.
13:14By controlling the narrative this early, John is quietly planting a story that will protect him later.
13:20Did you work this Monday?
13:22Mm-hmm.
13:23What time did you get off Monday?
13:25Uh, 2.30ish, 2, I don't know.
13:28Did you stop anywhere on the way home?
13:29No.
13:30Let me ask you this.
13:31Why were you looking for Katie?
13:33For Shania.
13:34Shania's .
13:35I'm just trying to help her out.
13:37Who do you know would want to do harm to her?
13:40Nobody.
13:41Do you know, uh, there's a guy who used to live with you?
13:46Uh, Redhead fella?
13:47Redhead?
13:48Yeah.
13:49Wayne?
13:50Yeah.
13:51Mm-hmm.
13:52What's his story?
13:53Just regular people.
13:54Good girl.
13:55That's why.
13:56Mm-hmm.
13:57What do you do for the Army?
13:58Well, right now I just sit in the space.
13:59It's my office right now.
14:01Um, because of the civil investigation, all of my recruiting duties have been suspended.
14:06Are you familiar with this abandoned house?
14:08Yeah.
14:09Okay.
14:10That's the spot.
14:11Okay.
14:12What's the hangout spot?
14:13Am I being charged with the crime?
14:15Because she's recording me, and I'm not comfortable with that.
14:18No, if I am, I'd like to contact a lawyer.
14:22Because this is uncomfortable.
14:24Okay.
14:25You're not, you're, you're not being charged, okay, with the crime right now.
14:29As the interview ends, John does something counterintuitive.
14:34He defends Wayne, the man he's secretly framing.
14:38It's a manipulation tactic known as reverse empathy.
14:42By showing compassion, he makes himself appear harmless and trustworthy.
14:47John's first interrogation had gone almost perfectly, leaving detectives with little they could use against him.
14:53Still, they couldn't shake the feeling that something was off.
14:58With no evidence to hold him, he was let go, and officers would turn to those closest to John and Katie, their friends and family, unaware that John had already influenced them.
15:10Detectives started with Crystal, Katie's best friend, and at the time, also John's roommate.
15:18John knew exactly what to expect here.
15:20In his interrogation, he had already planted the idea that Katie was dating around, and Crystal, being one of Katie's close friends, also knew about her dating habits.
15:30His hope was that she would unknowingly reinforce this misdirection, steering suspicion towards anyone but him.
15:39All right, October 28th, 2016, 447 B.M., since it's over.
15:43All right.
15:44All right.
15:45All right.
15:46All right.
15:47All right.
15:48He's just, I mean he said that, you know, it sucks for him, because he feels like he's gonna get in trouble for it.
16:07But, you know, he's like, I didn't do this, you know.
16:10Like, I'm tired of people coming after me.
16:14See, me and John actually really do get along.
16:18You know what I'm saying?
16:18I'm not going to lie about him at all.
16:20I'm going to tell you the straight-up truth.
16:21If he's acting weird, I'm going to tell you, but he wasn't.
16:24I was thinking last night about it.
16:25I really was.
16:28Just maybe a split-second thought that it could have been John.
16:33But ever since Katie saw him missing, he's made sure that there was more than one person around him.
16:39At the time that Katie died at 8 o'clock at night, John, all three of us were sitting up with him.
16:44I mean, from 5 o'clock when he came back home to me and my boyfriend left for work the next morning, he was there.
16:54Notice how Crystal mentions that John got home at 5 p.m. and stayed there the entire evening until morning.
17:01It's a detail that would later turn out to be part of John's manipulation.
17:06So, if you had to take a guess, who killed him?
17:09Who said he?
17:10I don't know because I heard a lot of things.
17:14And I know she had a finger.
17:15And I know that she was dating a lot of people from, you know, she means that she took a lot of people down in the house.
17:23I didn't even know that the house existed.
17:25What were John's feelings or thoughts toward Katie?
17:29I mean, I know that he loved her.
17:32I know that he still does.
17:34I mean, he's mad because of what Katie is accusing, you know, being able to come up to my ears and stuff like that.
17:40And just by the way she was talking, I knew she was lying.
17:43Because that's what she did.
17:44Me and her just kept each other in trouble all the time in high school.
17:47That's what she would do.
17:48She would lie.
17:48Just as John hoped, Crystal's account added fuel to the idea he had planted.
17:58By emphasizing Katie's dating life, she unknowingly fed into John's narrative, suggesting the threat may have come from someone she was seeing, maybe even Wayne.
18:08Next came Catherine, John's ex-wife and the mother of his child.
18:14He had already made sure she wouldn't say too much.
18:17Fear, and their shared child, would be enough to keep her quiet.
18:23This is my investigator.
18:25Hi, how are you?
18:26Nice to meet you.
18:28With you being married and for seven years, with the drinking, greasing sober, has there been any violence between the two of you?
18:34I mean, I'm not here to go and arrest him for something that happened, you know, ten years ago or anything like that.
18:42But I just don't want to go into anything that had to do with us, because that doesn't have anything to do with what happened between him and Katie.
18:55I mean, it's not that you're incriminating yourself.
18:57He's a good guy.
19:00I mean, I'm a liar, but I would assume, I wouldn't mean if he was that crazy.
19:09You never know, I want to take some time for somebody to snap.
19:12But he's never snapped with me for some reason.
19:15Well, she's two have a kid together, so.
19:16Yeah.
19:17Very sad.
19:18Yeah, you don't have to do it.
19:20All right, I'll give you a business card with my phone number on that.
19:24Okay.
19:26All right, thanks very much for coming.
19:27I'll make you have a three-step.
19:28Catherine's silence kept John safe for now.
19:32But the final interview with Katie's niece, Cheyenne, would not go, according to John's plan.
19:39Unlike Crystal or Catherine, she wouldn't protect him.
19:43Instead, she would point suspicion directly at John and reveal a motive that would tie everything together.
19:49For the first time, his carefully built plan would start to fall apart.
19:54All righty.
19:56All righty.
19:57Your name is Simon Paxton, is that correct?
19:59Yes.
20:00Okay.
20:01It was Thursday, October 27th at 8, 52 a.m.
20:05Simpsonsville Police Department, Mississippi, in reference to the homicide investigation, Caitlin Blackbell.
20:11Have you ever seen John give out towards Katie?
20:17I've never seen him put his hands on.
20:20I've seen him already.
20:21Would Katie have gone over to his house on the road?
20:26Within the last three weeks, I'm like, I don't.
20:29So if he says he hasn't seen her since she was on the road, that's all righty.
20:32Yeah, no, he's seen her.
20:34I know that John is really angry at Katie for a lot of us.
20:40I mean, what do you spend a bit of time for?
20:43He feels like that it's her fault.
20:46That all of the, like, when they're in a relationship, in fact, and everything kind of went bad.
20:52Well, he feels like it's her fault.
20:53That he's losing his job.
20:55And that he got in any trouble.
20:57And he's just, he just blames it all on her, you know?
21:01No.
21:02And, um, I don't know if this matters or not.
21:05But I know he has a $150,000 life insurance policy on her, too.
21:11I appreciate you coming in.
21:12I know it's not easy.
21:14Especially once somebody close to you.
21:16But it's important.
21:17We, you know, a lot of this information you gave us.
21:20Good information that we need, so.
21:23Cheyenne's interview gave detectives their first real motive,
21:26pointing to John.
21:27But motive wasn't enough.
21:30They needed evidence.
21:32They have a few leads, but they have no defined person of interest just yet.
21:36As the investigation dragged on,
21:38the detective's frustration began to grow.
21:41John had covered himself so carefully
21:43that they couldn't even get a judge to approve a DNA warrant.
21:47Without it, they had nothing that could tie him directly to Katie's final moments.
21:52It's now been four days since Katie was killed,
21:57and detectives didn't have any solid evidence.
22:00They knew John was smart, but so were they.
22:03Out of options and patience, they began planning something different.
22:07They began forming a new, risky, and very unconventional plan.
22:12In just two days, they would set a trap for John.
22:15A trap at Katie's own funeral.
22:20In the days leading up to the funeral,
22:22detectives stayed ready.
22:24While they waited, Katie's family mourned
22:26and tried to make sense of what happened.
22:2922-year-old Katie had spent the past year working at PetSmart,
22:33surrounded by animals she was saving and taking care of.
22:36She was easygoing and warm,
22:39quick to make friends,
22:40and close with her family.
22:42But her peaceful life from just days earlier
22:45would make what was about to come
22:47only more unsettling.
22:51As the day of the funeral came,
22:54detectives entered the funeral home early,
22:56working quietly before guests began to arrive.
22:59They positioned hidden cameras around the room
23:02and secretly wired the space for sound.
23:05Everything inside the funeral home looked normal,
23:08but in reality, detectives controlled every detail.
23:11They placed cups of water and other drinks
23:13where guests could easily reach them.
23:15The plan was simple.
23:17Get John to drink from one of the cops,
23:19catch it on video,
23:20collect his DNA from the cup,
23:22and compare it to the DNA found on Katie's body.
23:26On October 30th, the day of the funeral,
23:28detectives set their plan into motion.
23:30But what their cameras are about to capture
23:32goes far beyond anything they expect.

24:02As John leaves the funeral home, detectives know their plan has worked.
24:14They quickly return to retrieve the cup he drank from and the hidden camera they placed earlier.
24:19When they review the footage, three critical things stand out,
24:23all of which will become pivotal to the entire investigation.
24:28The first is exactly what they were hoping for.
24:30John drinks from one of the cups and leaves it behind,
24:34giving detectives the evidence they need to collect his DNA without a warrant
24:38and compare it to the samples found on Katie.
24:41The second detail is something they never expected.
24:44The footage captures John walking up to the casket,
24:48taking pictures of Katie's body while making unsettling comments.
24:53And the third, perhaps most unsettling of all, is that John isn't alone.
24:59Standing beside him is an unidentified young woman
25:02who quietly tells him to stop taking pictures, then giggles moments later.
25:08Her behavior immediately drew attention,
25:11and detectives decided to collect her cup as well for DNA testing.
25:15And when they began digging into her identity,
25:17they discovered the woman was 17-year-old Hannah Thompson,
25:22a friend, and more recently, John's new roommate.
25:26They also learned that she had once been close friends with Katie.
25:30Given her connection to John and Katie and her strange behavior at the funeral,
25:35detectives know Hannah isn't just another witness.
25:38She might be the key to solving the entire case.
25:42And they were dead on.
25:45At this point, detectives have interviewed Wayne,
25:48John, and people from both John and Katie's circle.
25:51They also collected crucial evidence and leads,
25:54and now believe that Hannah, the 17-year-old who lived with John,
25:58could be the key to uncovering the truth about Katie's murder.
26:01The next day, on October 31st, a week after Katie's death,
26:06detectives approach Hannah and bring her in for interrogation.
26:09If anyone knows what really happened, it's her.
26:12When was the last time you missed on Katie?
26:16Like a few months ago.
26:18Yeah.
26:18What was your feelings towards her?
26:21I mean, I always, like, I've always seen her as, like, a friend,
26:24because, like, I lived with her for a little bit.
26:26Right.
26:27So is it fair to say you were on good times with her once she was killed?
26:31Mm-hmm.
26:31Okay.
26:33Did you end up going to her visitation Saturday?
26:36No, I didn't.
26:38Okay.
26:38So you didn't get to say goodbye to her?
26:40Mm-hmm.
26:42Um, I know John, I think, went there Sunday, right?
26:45Mm-hmm.
26:46Okay.
26:47Yeah, you got to go with him?
26:49I went with him, yeah.
26:50I didn't get to say goodbye, though, because, um,
26:53her family doesn't really like me.
26:55Oh, no.
26:56Because of, um, her niece, Cheyenne.
26:58Yeah.
26:59Yeah, we were, like, kind of, like, off and on friends,
27:01and I think she might have said something about me
27:04that her family didn't really like me.
27:07Did I, so did you go in the room and pay your respects,
27:10or how did that go?
27:12It was hard.
27:13It was really hard.
27:15How long did you stay in the room with her castle?
27:18Like, 10 minutes, 10 to 15 minutes.
27:23What did y'all talk about while you were in there?
27:24We didn't talk at all.
27:26Nothing?
27:27Mm-hmm.
27:27We just each had our, like, moments, I guess.
27:31Did John ever take his cell phone out and take a picture over?
27:34No, he didn't.
27:35You sure?
27:36Mm-hmm.
27:36I used to tell him that.
27:38Some people do that.
27:39Yeah, no, he never did, Cheyenne.
27:42Watch Hannah's behavior closely.
27:44As the questions get more direct,
27:45her eyes start darting between the detectives.
27:47She fidgets with her hands, picks at her nails.
27:50Her whole demeanor shifts.
27:51It's clear she's getting nervous,
27:53and the detectives can see it, too.
27:55So while you were in that room, you two never talked at all?
27:58Mm-mm.
27:58I kind of rubbed his back a little bit.
28:00You know, I told him that it was okay, but all of a sudden,
28:02we didn't really talk.
28:04Was he crying?
28:05Mm-hmm.
28:05Were you crying?
28:07Mm-hmm.
28:07This is hard.
28:08It seems to be funny.
28:09We cry.
28:10I bet.
28:12Okay.
28:13Monday night at some point, before you went out,
28:15you guys carried out a bag of trash to your car.
28:18Your dad's car, right?
28:19I don't...
28:22Okay.
28:24So you don't recall coming out of the trash bag?
28:25You haven't cleaned anything up?
28:27Mm-mm.
28:28Having to put stuff in the trash?
28:31Yes, sir.
28:32Okay.
28:32On Monday, the day Katie was killed,
28:35one of their roommates reported seeing John and Hannah
28:38carrying out several bags of trash.
28:40At the time, detectives didn't think much of it.
28:43It felt like a small, irrelevant detail with nothing to back it up.
28:47But now, with all this new information coming together,
28:50that statement suddenly stood out.
28:53It was another piece of the puzzle,
28:55something they could finally use to put more pressure on Hannah.
28:58Um, just so you understand,
29:00we've been working this case steady since she was told.
29:03Right.
29:04There's a lot of these things that we know the answers to.
29:06Mm-hmm.
29:07I can tell you already, you're lying to me.
29:09Okay?
29:11You do not want to get wrapped up and catch a murder charge.
29:14I gotta tell you that sometime.
29:16At the funeral home, we were there.
29:18Mm-hmm.
29:19Okay?
29:19There was a camera in the room.
29:21There was a recorder in the room.
29:24We heard everything you guys said.
29:26So do you want to go back and relapse that?
29:30I don't.
29:32It was not easy to see her like that.
29:37Is that why there's some giggling and stuff?
29:40There's not any giggling.
29:41We've been doing this longer than you've been alive.
29:44Yes.
29:45You're not, you're not, you're not slicker than us.
29:48You know, you're not going to outsmart us.
29:50We've talked to people.
29:51This is a murder.
29:53Do you understand that?
29:54Yes, sir.
29:55What do you think about somebody that would stab a girl in the neck to the point where the knife went all the way through to the other side?
30:02And then stick her body like a piece of trash in the basement of an abandoned house to sit there for a day and a half?
30:08Before something comes to her.
30:10Look at her, she's right here.
30:12I don't want to look at her.
30:13There's no further.
30:15I don't want to do this anymore.
30:18You don't want to do what?
30:19You don't want to help us find out who you killed her?
30:21All you've got to do is tell the truth.
30:22It would be so stinky.
30:24I can't.
30:24I can't.
30:25I can't.
30:25Can I tell you something?
30:29To tell the truth, you don't have to try.
30:31It just flows.
30:32It just comes out.
30:33We're also aware of what people have told us about you and Katie.
30:38They're telling us that you didn't like her one bit.
30:42Well, I think me and John started getting together to decide not liking me.
30:51If you know something and you're trying to cover up for it, you're going to go down with the rest of them.
30:57You're going to go down with the person who did this to her.
31:00I don't know anything about her murder.
31:02You do.
31:03I don't.
31:04You do.
31:04I really don't.
31:05We really do.
31:06You do.
31:07We know more than you think we do.
31:09I don't want to talk anymore right now.
31:12You're lucky.
31:14Even after being confronted with the footage and being caught in multiple lies,
31:19Hannah refused to give up on any additional details she may withhold.
31:23But while none of this gave detectives the definitive proof they needed,
31:27John didn't know that.
31:29And that uncertainty was exactly what they were counting on.
31:33So detectives decide to bring him in again, this time more prepared and ready to push harder than before.
31:40They planned to corner him with everything they had.
31:43But they'd have to be careful.
31:45If they pushed too far without enough to arrest him, it could tip him off, causing him to disappear.
31:50We hadn't really had a chance to sit down.
31:53I talked to you that day.
31:54Well, we notified you about her death.
31:56Yeah.
31:56And things are kind of emotional and everything.
31:59Right.
32:00So the viewing was Saturday, right?
32:02Right.
32:02Two or four on Saturday.
32:03When did you get one of you?
32:05I went on Sunday.
32:052.30 on Sunday.
32:06Okay.
32:08So they just had a private thing for you?
32:09Mm-hmm.
32:10Did you get by yourself?
32:11Yeah.
32:11Well, lots of times with me.
32:12Did you?
32:13Yeah.
32:13Was that hard?
32:15Yeah.
32:15Because, I mean, first of all, there's nobody there but me and her.
32:19So she's kind of standing there staring at, like, Katie's nasty, like, dirty, disgusting body.
32:24I've seen people dead.
32:25I've fucking dealt with this shit before.
32:27And now, there's nobody else there.
32:29You know what I mean?
32:31That night, somebody says you and Hannah were putting some trash from a bag, like a trash bag in the back of the Prius.
32:36Do you remember doing that?
32:38Oh, yeah.
32:39Uh, Marley had, like, the most explosive shit on the floor and then stuck up the whole house.
32:47I threw, like, four towels.
32:49This moment reveals Hannah's lie.
32:52She claims she couldn't remember taking any trash out.
32:55Yet, John's statement confirms otherwise.
32:58It's a small clue, but one that'll soon become part of a much bigger picture.
33:03So you guys got home around three roughly?
33:05Yeah.
33:06Brandon and Chris were there.
33:09What happened after that?
33:11We went and met a friend, Scott, to get some money that he owes me.
33:16What's he owe me?
33:17He owed me $500 for, like, a trash-plank car.
33:21Where'd you owe me what Scott was?
33:22At the Zaxby's.
33:23He was in the Army?
33:25Yeah.
33:26Yeah, we were playing.
33:27We were playing together?
33:27We were playing together.
33:28Did you go anywhere before that?
33:30No.
33:31This is where John makes his first mistake, mentioning a name detectives have never heard
33:36before.
33:37Charles Scott, his friend from the military, someone who'd later proved to know far more
33:42about the night Katie died than anyone realized.
33:45I don't know how much you know about cell phones and stuff like that, but as you go
33:51around, your cell phone's constantly searching for signals and stuff like that.
33:56So, with that said, is there anything, going back to last Monday, is there anything that
34:02you told me that your cell phone records would say otherwise?
34:05I believe so.
34:06What if I told you that your cell phone did ping somewhere other than where you said you
34:11were?
34:11Then I'd also say that her cell phone pinged in West Virginia.
34:15Yeah, that ended up being an AT&T mishap.
34:19They plugged in the wrong phone number.
34:21Yeah.
34:21I don't know.
34:22Okay.
34:25What if I told you that Charles Scott's phone number pinged in the same area that yours did
34:31and knocked around Zaxby's?
34:33Yeah.
34:34Monday night.
34:35I mean, Scott Friedman moving on.
34:37We can call him.
34:38We can ask him.
34:39Okay.
34:39So, the night, this Monday night that we were talking about around 6, 15, sometime around
34:46that time frame, can you think of any reason your phone would show that you were in that
34:51area of Augusta Road and Whitehorse Road?
34:53No.
34:54Is there any reason you and Charles were talking about that evening?
34:57Yeah.
34:58Because, see, that's the night that he was here.
35:01That's the night he was available.
35:02I'm not looking to offend you, but it's questions that we need to get answered and cleared up.
35:07Okay.
35:07Um, did Katie have any kind of life insurance policy?
35:10Through the military, yeah.
35:11She's on Mac and Roll.
35:12Okay.
35:13So, I'll have my daughter.
35:14Would you be willing to take a photograph so we can go ahead and do that to you and
35:17eliminate you and start looking elsewhere?
35:18I just want to let her about that first.
35:20Okay.
35:21See what he says, because I don't know about that at all.
35:23As the interview ends, detectives have their first real connection between John and Charles.
35:28Both of their phones show activity near the area where Katie's body was found.
35:32It isn't enough to make an arrest, but it's enough to keep digging.
35:36And with a new name now tied to the night of the murder, John can sense it.
35:41Detectives are closing in.
35:44At this point, the main circle of suspects included Wayne, John, Hannah, and now more
35:50recently, Charles Scott, John's friend from the army.
35:54But as detectives slowly pressed forward, John was growing uneasy.
35:59For the first time, he was starting to realize his master plan might not hold.
36:05That's when, on November 4th, 11 days after Katie was killed, detectives received a call
36:11that would send the case in a whole new direction.
36:14Crystal, who was John's roommate and had been interviewed earlier, came forward with information
36:19that changed everything.
36:22Hey, Crystal.
36:23Hello.
36:23How are you?
36:24I'm okay.
36:25Oh, my God.
36:28What's been going on since?
36:30Oh, I'm late.
36:31You got a phone call.
36:32What was that?
36:33At 3.30, he called and he said, um, he said, are y'all at home?
36:37And we said, no.
36:38And he said, okay.
36:39All right.
36:40Wow.
36:40And then he said, uh-huh.
36:42Well, me and Brenny got home about 6.15, 6.30, and we seen that in our room, we have,
36:48well, we said the Halloween lights just go across the ceiling.
36:50The attic is right where that light is at.
36:52And we had the lights, I had the lights going across the attic.
36:55Well, when we come back, they were just torn down.
36:58We haven't even touched them.
36:59They were just ripped out from the attic.
37:01And once we figured out he was gone, we went searching through the house, making sure
37:05all the windows were locked and covered.
37:07And because I've never been in a house alone like that, except for my apartment.
37:10But he just, he just, he was gone.
37:13You know, and we couldn't go because the cops had his phone.
37:16I said, Brenny, I said, we need to go back outside and call the Simpsonville Detective
37:21Bullock.
37:22And I told him what was happening.
37:23And he was like, you know, I was like, you know, if you're going to come and search
37:27the house right now, I'll give you full permission.
37:29He said, well, I can't do that without a warrant.
37:31And he was like, and I was like, well, I mean, there's no way that somebody can come out
37:34here and like search the house or anything like that.
37:36And he said, no.
37:37He said, your best bet is to go stay at the night somewhere else.
37:41He was like, because you're possibly living with a murderer.
37:44John was gone.
37:47His disappearance also meant he abandoned his military service, officially classifying him
37:53as a deserter.
37:55However, as investigators would soon learn, he wasn't alone.
37:59He had fled with none other than the 17-year-old girl, Hannah Thompson.
38:06And his officers across the state searched every highway, every motel, every possible route
38:12out of South Carolina with no sign of either of them.
38:15In the days that followed, leads were few.
38:26The pair had vanished completely off the grid.
38:29A 28-year-old former army sergeant and a 17-year-old teenager, gone without a trace.
38:35Then, on November 19th, 26 days after Katie's death, a small breakthrough happened.
38:41John's red Yukon was captured on CCTV near Las Cruces, New Mexico, about 1,600 miles from
38:49Simpsonville, South Carolina, where he disappeared.
38:51And just two days later, on November 21st, that same Yukon was found abandoned in the
38:58mountains of Yuma-Tilla County in Oregon, over 1,400 miles away from Las Cruces.
39:04Inside the vehicle, investigators found John's laptop, clothes, and camping gear scattered
39:09around, suggesting that after the crash, John and Hannah grabbed what they could and ran
39:15into the woods.
39:16The discovery confirmed what detectives had already feared.
39:19John and Hannah were constantly on the move, crossing state lines and staying just far enough
39:24ahead of law enforcement to vanish again.
39:27Later that same day, authorities issued arrest warrants for both John and Hannah, officially
39:33turning the case into a nationwide manhunt.
39:37By this point, John and Hannah had already been on the run for over two weeks before any
39:41warrants were ever issued, putting them far ahead of law enforcement and nearly impossible
39:46to track.
39:47But once the warrants went active, detectives finally gained full access to their phones,
39:52chat logs, and internet history.
39:55And that's when their worst suspicions were confirmed.
40:00I just woke up and I already feel sad again.
40:03I feel like you're still talking to Katie.
40:06I promise you I'm not talking to Katie.
40:08I will leave you if you talk to her.
40:10I swear.
40:11I know.
40:12I'm not and I won't.
40:13She's gone.
40:14I'm done with her.
40:15I promise.
40:16I'm going through with that thing, I'm saying.
40:18I'm going to be staying with you.
40:20Good.
40:20The messages between the two suggest that John had been planning the murder for months
40:26prior to it actually happening.
40:28And upon searching his internet history, they found searches like how to make a two-way radio
40:34or how to sharpen a knife, leaving little to no doubt about his involvement.
40:39But with John and Hannah still missing, detectives had little choice but to wait, hoping for the
40:44next break that could pull them back on the trail.
40:47And that's when, on November 25th, 21 days after John and Hannah's disappearance, and
40:53over a month after Katie's death, detectives got a call from a South Carolina prison.
40:59But the caller wasn't just anyone.
41:01The call came from the cellmate of Charles Scott, John's army friend who was already in custody
41:08for an unrelated charge.
41:10Charles' phone had pinged near the abandoned house on the day Katie died, and his cellmate
41:15was about to provide a lead that could give detectives the breakthrough they desperately
41:20needed.
41:20With details only the killer could have known.
41:24As we're talking today, is that Colonel Scott of your home to the bench?
41:29Yeah, that's what I'm talking about.
41:30Is a media kill girl, child killed a girl, with my ears, like, named John.
41:37So I'm like, you know, I'm a man, I'm a man, I'm a man, I'm a man, I'm a man, I'm a man,
41:44that they do people know.
41:46He was one of the co-ordiders to the spot where John looked behind her and got distracted.
41:52And they met her at a different location when John got her, and he put the knife toward
41:57John's stabbing her, and I don't know how many times John's stabbing him, I say, he
42:01didn't even go with each after twice, and John made him stab at twice.
42:04He actually said he'd be scared when he scared the stabbing her up first, but then after
42:08his stabbing her, it made him feel a little better.
42:10William's statements are shocking.
42:12His account of what happened closely mirrors the possible events of the night Katie died,
42:17and what he says next only grows more disturbing.
42:20He said, well, this is the second time, but the first time he told me about, you know,
42:25how he coerced her, and now he was going to talk about John, John Bill Thomas, come off
42:31of marijuana, John's on drugs, drill back around.
42:34I think John's record, they put it in John's tie-hole, red tie-hole, 2-15.
42:41So where did they say where they actually killed her at?
42:43In the back of the tie-hole, on the tarp.
42:46Mark's statements put serious allegations on Charles.
43:08It wouldn't be anything special, as false accusations like this happen when inmates
43:13try to get a deal with officers, or get their sentence lowered.
43:16But in this instance, too many details added up.
43:19Details only the killer or someone heavily involved could have known.
43:23One of those was his claim that Charles had lured Katie to a location near the abandoned
43:28house.
43:29For detectives, this suddenly made sense of why her car had been discovered just a few miles
43:34away, abandoned, without a struggle.
43:36Charles also allegedly told his bunkmate that he and John wrapped Katie in a tarp to move
43:41her into the basement.
43:43This matched forensics, which had already indicated she'd been moved after death.
43:47Now detectives have a chilling theory of how that happened.
43:51It was now a very big chance for the detectives to possibly catch one of Katie's killers.
43:56A chance they couldn't afford to waste.
43:59So without hesitation, they brought Charles in, hoping for the biggest breakthrough in the
44:04case yet.
44:04But detectives knew getting Charles to talk wouldn't be easy.
44:08They didn't have enough evidence to pin him down, and they needed something, anything,
44:13that could make him slip.
44:15So they decided to take an insane risk.
44:18They came up with a plan to push him over the edge.
44:22They would bluff, pretending that John had already been arrested and was ready to testify
44:26against him.
44:28If Charles believed it, the pressure might finally make him talk.
44:32But if he didn't, detectives would lose their best chance to get the truth.
44:36I can't wait until he used to it.
44:40Let's get away from the polygraph, okay?
44:43But you've been saying that every single day I don't want to do it, right?
44:47Because it's not looking good for you.
44:49Okay?
44:50I have absolutely nothing to do with that girl doing.
44:53Not least take a polygraph.
44:55God, please.
44:56Let me tell you that John was arrested in New Jersey.
45:00Okay.
45:00And he sang like a bird to those messiators.
45:03I was going to wait until he used to it.
45:05Well, you shouldn't.
45:06I'm not there.
45:08No.
45:08The investigator may want to tell you that John was arrested earlier.
45:12Okay.
45:12And he's talking.
45:13What did his name say?
45:14I don't know what he said.
45:16I don't know, but I know I've never seen that girl.
45:19It's in my life.
45:20You were both there, Charlie.
45:22No, he was not.
45:23As soon as the questioning starts, Charles demands a polygraph.
45:27And detectives know exactly what that means.
45:30Polygraphs aren't reliable, can be manipulated, and their results can't be used in court.
45:35It's an easy way out.
45:37Simple yes or no questions instead of a real confrontation.
45:40And before long, his avoidance turns into an act of ignorance.
45:44I never seen that girl.
45:45But you knew that they were married, and you knew that John had problem?
45:49No, I did not know.
45:50You told me.
45:51You told me at the founding police.
45:53Why not that John has talked about how she was putting his career up?
45:58That was a lie.
46:00Everybody's thinking like a bird.
46:01I never had no bird.
46:02You will not find no fingerprints or no weapons that I touched.
46:07Number one.
46:09Why not?
46:10Because I wasn't there.
46:11I didn't touch no weapon.
46:12I never had no weapon.
46:13But he said, I'll never find fingerprints on a weapon that you touched.
46:18Yeah.
46:18So, have you ever told anybody that you're involved in this murder?
46:23Do I look stupid?
46:24Do I look like I would just go inside of a fucking jail?
46:28Because some guy don't know that they say, hey man, I murdered some girl.
46:30No, it looks like you were remorseful for your actions.
46:34Let me ask you this.
46:35So, where's the phone that you had that you communicated with Katie on?
46:39Who's Katie?
46:40Did you ever die?
46:41Yeah.
46:42I never communicated with her.
46:43Where did you tell me?
46:45What phone?
46:46The phone that was used to communicate with the girl the day that she was murdered.
46:50Only phone that I had was the one used.
46:53The one used in the one at Miss Christy's house.
46:56Even after the detectives bluff and revealed the testimony his previous cellmate made about
47:01Charles' involvement in the crime, he denied everything.
47:05Still, detectives couldn't ignore the phone data placing him near the house or the chilling
47:10details from his bunkmate.
47:12With no confession, all they could do was wait.
47:15Charles' DNA was now added to the samples already being tested against the evidence found
47:20beneath Katie's fingernails.
47:21And when those results came back, they would finally reveal who was truly involved.
47:29Over two weeks have now passed since the last lead on the case.
47:33With false leads and missing crucial timelines, it was becoming more and more possible that
47:39the real killers of Katie would never be found.
47:43Until the detectives got a call from Hannah's parents.
47:46With information that could soon result in solving the whole case.
47:50Hannah had resurfaced, stating she had been abandoned by John and would soon come back
47:57to her hometown.
47:58So law enforcement would be there, waiting for her.
48:03It was now the day when Hannah was supposed to come back to her home.
48:08Law enforcement secured all entries to the city, as well as all possible places she could
48:13go to.
48:13And finally, at 9am, she would be spotted near her family home.
48:18From there, she would be instantly detained and taken to the police department for interrogation.
48:24For the detectives, it was now or never.
48:27That was their biggest chance of finding out what had really happened and who was truly
48:31responsible for Katie's death.
48:33What was the game plan when we died left?
48:37I don't think we really had one.
48:39I guess both of us just kind of parent and be afraid that he wanted to leave the state.
48:46And we, like, drove up into the mountains and he, like, he just got the car, like, stuck in
48:54the, like, in trees, like, in the mountains.
48:59So I was like, like, what are we going to do?
49:01He said that we were, like, kind of, like, stopped and he was crying and now he's, like,
49:07like, I can't do this anymore, like, I need to go home and, like, started yelling at me
49:13and calling me names and saying that if I left, I could be for the kids.
49:18Then, like, one morning, like, we had gotten up and left.
49:24And then I was just, like, I went to, like, sit here, like, I got up and I went to, like,
49:32down the street to, like, a hotel, started crying and then I sent a message to my mom
49:40and dad, um...
49:42Hannah continued describing their time on the run, doing her best to avoid talking about
49:47the day of the murder.
49:48It went on for nearly two hours and by then the pressure had clearly worn her down.
49:53That's when the detective would start asking her the difficult questions, causing Hannah
49:58to break, revealing everything she knows.
50:00Let's go back to that Monday, okay, because we now have conversations between you and him
50:06on Wednesday, I think.
50:08He's been dealt with her, he's been dealt with her, he's been dealt with her, it doesn't work.
50:15But then, lo and behold, she found at that about an abandoned house that he's supposed to
50:21go to dealt with her.
50:23Meanwhile, he randomly asked you to drop her off on Woodruff Road, to drop him off on Woodruff
50:29Road, and doesn't tell you why, and he's thinking, okay.
50:34So can you please tell me, what did you plan, what did he tell you that he was going to do?
50:39He told me that he was just going to go over her, it's awkward.
50:47He drove us over there.
50:48He just kept telling me, like, anything like, it was my fault, and what he did for me, it's
50:57like, what did he say he did for you?
51:00He said, I'm holding my hand for four years, and that he told me that he was going to do it
51:08really well, and then he took it for me.
51:13Hannah, was there a plan before this to get rid of Katie?
51:17No.
51:17Not from you, but did John ever talk to you about getting rid of Katie?
51:22Honestly.
51:23No.
51:24What did he tell you about killing him?
51:26He told me that he was going to do it for me.
51:31He told me that the knife broke.
51:36He told me something.
51:38He told me something broke.
51:40He told me.
51:42He told me something.
51:43The last thing she said was, ow.
51:50And she told me that before that, if she was a baby, if she wasn't going to do it for me,
51:55where were they handling him?
51:57We didn't bring him to come.
52:03Um, and you don't know exactly where he could feel what he said to me.
52:10Hannah, did you have anything to do right now, baby?
52:13And the reason why I asked you this is because we're still living for John.
52:19Okay.
52:20And as much as you think John cared about you,
52:23from a lot better perspective,
52:26not knowing you, not being your mom,
52:30he doesn't.
52:33Unfortunately, Hannah's statements proved far less helpful in finding John
52:36than the detectives initially hoped for.
52:38Although she stated that John confessed to killing Katie and provided some new insights,
52:43she didn't know much about Charles' involvement.
52:46And while she could be arrested,
52:48detectives decided she might prove more useful free.
52:51After all, they now had her back in the city and under close watch,
52:55which seemed like a small success.
52:57What they didn't realize, however,
52:59was that this was all part of John's plan.
53:02Planting Hannah back in the city to infiltrate the case
53:06and feed him exactly what detectives knew,
53:09keeping him one step ahead for years to come.
53:14Almost three months had passed since Katie's body was found in the basement of the abandoned house,
53:19and the killer was still out there.
53:22But on that particular day,
53:24the long-awaited DNA results finally came back.
53:28And the results of DNA found under Katie's fingernails pointed to no one else but John himself.
53:36With the DNA matching to John,
53:38Wayne was cleared.
53:40But detectives still believed Hannah or Charles might have helped,
53:43or at least knew far more than they admitted.
53:46Detectives already knew that John was only using cash and most likely a fake ID.
53:51So all they could do at the moment was wait for John to make a critical mistake
53:56that would allow them to catch him.
53:58But John was careful.
54:01Very careful.
54:04It had been over seven months since Katie's murder
54:08and six months since John went on the run,
54:11when on May 21, 2017,
54:14investigators received tips and possible sightings of John in Washington,
54:18over 2,700 miles from South Carolina where Katie was found dead
54:24and over 300 miles away from where his red Yukon was found abandoned.
54:29Acting on these leads,
54:31they canvassed local businesses
54:32and retrieved CCTV footage from a parking lot in Washington
54:36where John was captured on camera.
54:39Unfortunately, despite getting close,
54:45John managed to slip away,
54:47vanishing off under the radar once again.
54:51For the next year,
54:53the investigation hit a standstill.
54:55It wasn't until September 6, 2018,
54:58almost two years since Katie's death,
55:01when Hannah finally revealed that John had given her his journal and tools to hide,
55:06a crucial piece of evidence that would shift the case in a new direction.
55:10The journal became a pivotal piece of evidence,
55:13revealing John's state of mind and his premeditated intentions.
55:17It confirms that John's actions were driven by a deep desire to be with Hannah
55:21and his willingness to kill Katie to make that happen.
55:25During her interview,
55:26Hannah admitted she had been John's girlfriend
55:28and that she had been in constant contact with him before Katie's death.
55:32She also confessed that she had hidden John's journal,
55:35which contained disturbing entries about his obsessive thoughts
55:39and plans to escape with Hannah.
55:41This was the last significant breakthrough in the case for years.
55:45With no new leads,
55:47the investigation stalled.
55:52Detectives spent the next few years
55:54chasing down small tips
55:56and piecing together fragments of information,
55:59but nothing substantial came of it.
56:01The case gradually faded from public attention.
56:05Then, in 2022,
56:07six years after Katie's death,
56:11everything is about to change.
56:13After over six years of dead ends,
56:17U.S. Marshals and local law enforcement
56:19tracked John down in Oregon.
56:22He had erased his past,
56:23now living under the alias Ben Klein.
56:27Under his new identity,
56:28he had started a fresh life,
56:30marrying a new woman
56:32and leaving his past behind.
56:34The arrest felt surreal.
56:37John,
56:37who had spent so long evading capture,
56:40was now cornered.
56:41After years of hiding in plain sight,
56:45the truth had finally caught up with him,
56:47and the case
56:48was nearing its resolution.
56:51However,
56:51the mystery of how Katie was lured to the abandoned house
56:55remains unsolved to this day.
56:57Her phone was recovered damaged,
57:00limiting investigators' ability to access message content
57:03and app-based communications.
57:05And while rumors suggested Charles Scott
57:07might have had contact with her,
57:09this was never confirmed.
57:11With no physical or forensic evidence tying him to the crime,
57:14he was ultimately ruled out as a suspect
57:17and never sentenced.
57:19In 2022,
57:20during an interview after John's arrest,
57:22Hannah revealed for the first time
57:24that she and John had been in regular contact
57:27throughout the years he was on the run,
57:29continuing to text and communicate,
57:31even after she had returned to South Carolina.
57:34This new revelation shed light on her role
57:37in helping John evade capture.
57:39Finally,
57:41on September 20th,
57:422024,
57:44John Blauvelt was convicted of Katie's murder
57:46and sentenced to life in prison without parole.
57:50Hannah Thompson was charged with obstruction of justice
57:53and accessory after the fact,
57:55receiving a sentence of 10 years.
57:58It was spelled without calling for 12 times.
