On 28 December 1881, Tombstone, Arizona, became the stage for one of the most famous gunfights in American history. Known as the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, this violent encounter involved lawmen Wyatt Earp, Virgil Earp, and Doc Holliday facing off against the outlaw Cowboys. Lasting less than a minute, the shootout left several men dead and cemented Tombstone’s place in Wild West legend. This event symbolized the lawlessness of the American frontier and the struggle between justice and outlaw rule in the Old West.

00:03Virgil Earp, July 18, 1843 to October 19, 1905, was the older brother of Wyatt Earp and played
00:11a central role in the events surrounding the gunfight at the O.K. Corral. Here is what
00:15happened to him after the famous shootout. December 28, 1881, Ambush in Tombstone,
00:22about two months after the O.K. Corral gunfight, October 26, 1881, Virgil, who was still serving
00:28as Tombstone City Marshal, or Deputy U.S. Marshal, depending on the source, was ambushed late at
00:34night while walking across the street from the Oriental Saloon to his hotel. Assassins hiding
00:39in a second-story building across the street opened fire with shotguns. Virgil was hit by
00:44multiple buckshot pellets. The most serious wound shattered his left arm near the elbow,
00:49requiring the surgical removal of several inches of bone. The arm was permanently maimed and mostly
00:55useless for the rest of his life. Aftermath and departure from Arizona. After the attempt on his
01:00life, and a later attack that killed his brother Morgan in March 1882, Virgil and his wife Allie
01:06left Tombstone for good. Wyatt and Doc Holliday escorted them by train as far as Tucson, where
01:12another brief shootout occurred with cowboy faction members. Virgil eventually made it to his parents'
01:17home in Colton, California, to recover. Later life. Virgil eventually regained enough health to work
01:24again. He served as a deputy sheriff and city marshal in Colton, California, ran a detective agency,
01:30and in the late 1890s, early 1900s operated a saloon and served as constable in the gold mining town of
01:37Vanderbilt, California. In 1900 he ran unsuccessfully for sheriff of San Bernardino County.
01:43He remained close to Wyatt and the rest of the family. Death. Virgil Earp died of pneumonia on
01:49October 19, 1905, at the age of 62 in Goldfield, Nevada, where he had gone hoping the dry climate
01:56would help his health. He is buried in Goldfield's Pioneer Cemetery. In short, Virgil survived the
02:03tombstone vendetta, unlike his brother Morgan, lived another 24 years with a crippled left arm,
02:08continued in law enforcement and business ventures, and ultimately died of natural causes,
02:13pneumonia, in 1905.
