00:04:10for homicide detectives their chance of solving a murder is cut in half if they don't get a lead
00:04:17within the first 48 hours
00:04:21so about approximately an hour ago we had an armed robbery in which the victims were shot at
00:04:44following the robbery and then while working that armed robbery they observe a bullet hole
00:04:49to an unrelated trailer make contact and they discover the deceased in the back bedroom
00:04:57it happened here in front of 12
00:05:02so here you can see is where we have the entry of the bullet and then on the other side of this wall
00:05:09is our decedent
00:05:13his name is herberto martinez martinez
00:05:2037 year old eriberto martinez martinez came to the u.s 20 years ago from oaxaca mexico in search
00:05:26of better job opportunities he worked construction and was packed to move to a new job site in north
00:05:32carolina in the morning he leaves behind a large family including his brother and brother's family
00:05:39in north charleston and his parents and three other siblings back home in mexico
00:05:47the bullet struck him in his facial area while he was sleeping
00:05:51the shot killed eriberto instantly where you see the crowd of people is the general area which the
00:05:57armed robbery victims were when the shooting took place they were at the back corner of their trailer
00:06:04when approximately four what they described as black males approached them demanded their items and
00:06:10as they were fleeing the suspect shot there were several shell casings out here that was collected by
00:06:16patrol the four casings were covered are all nine millimeter
00:06:23where the armed robbery happened a trailer has video cameras bravo is helping download the video
00:06:31we need to do interviews with the victims once the video is downloaded i'm gonna have him take my victims
00:06:37to city hall and bravo is gonna sit down with each one and we're gonna have one translation of what happened
00:06:46bush and malone are there and i let them know you're coming with three thank you bravo
00:06:58stray bullets are always rough hopefully they got a good description in clothing or there's something
00:07:03distinct on one of the individuals that committed the robbery that we can identify and hopefully with
00:07:09that we'll be able to develop a suspect
00:07:21so run me through what happened
00:07:23so we said they were hanging out drinking beer there were four that came somewhere from like behind the
00:07:35trailer this shit okay so they're asking like where that where's the mota which means marijuana
00:07:41yep
00:07:41can you describe like what they were wearing what they look like
00:07:54he says the man who pointed the gun at him wore a black mask and two others also wore masks
00:08:00two black black masks one had one and then one didn't have one at all
00:08:04he said the one that came off to him with the gun he was only able to see kind of like eyes and he had
00:08:11like the mask with the hoodie on
00:08:12okay
00:08:15yeah
00:08:17He pulled the trigger, and did you hear it go?
00:08:40Mm-hmm.
00:08:41And nothing?
00:08:42Yes.
00:08:43And then he starts going through your pockets.
00:08:45Yes, exactly.
00:08:47The suspect stole his keys, phone, and wallet, and then moved on to his friend.
00:08:52So the guy with the black mask, after he took his phone and everything, the black mask,
00:08:57went to start searching the other victim, victim number two.
00:09:01So, but was it the same one that was kind of doing all the robbing?
00:09:06Yes.
00:09:07Were they, like, trying to aim at you, or were they, like, aiming at the house?
00:09:23Yes.
00:09:24Now, did you see which direction they ran to after they fired?
00:09:28Yes.
00:09:29He says he and his friends ran after the men, but lost them behind some apartments.
00:09:36So, when they turned left onto Facet, that's when you lost sight of them?
00:09:41Yes.
00:09:42Yes.
00:09:43Okay.
00:09:44All right.
00:09:45Okay.
00:09:46Hold on.
00:09:47I'm Detective Bush.
00:09:48Detectives speak with the two other robbery victims.
00:10:02Can you describe them?
00:10:03Can you describe them?
00:10:19Any good descriptions on any of the suspects?
00:10:21Nope.
00:10:22This is going to be a really tough case.
00:10:27Hopefully, we'll get some good video, and it'd be great to get a car coming or going in the
00:10:31area.
00:10:37All right.
00:10:38Watch this.
00:10:39Detective Anthony Russ pulls up the surveillance video gathered from the trailer park.
00:10:43So, you're going to see the suspects walking up Stahl Road on crosses.
00:10:48The four of them now are linked up.
00:10:51So, then we cut to this video, where they're now walking into the mobile home park.
00:11:08Approach the victims from the rear of the trailers.
00:11:14You don't really get to see a whole lot.
00:11:16It's dark and from a distance.
00:11:18You can see they're robbing them.
00:11:20That gun.
00:11:21Mm-hmm.
00:11:25And they run beside this mobile home that actually has the cameras.
00:11:32And this is the good one.
00:11:35They're running and then shooting back.
00:11:37Unfortunately for us, the video surveillance is at night, and they are wearing masks, three
00:11:42of them.
00:11:43So, that makes it challenging.
00:11:44But anything distinctive helps us.
00:11:48You can see a camo jacket.
00:11:49And some Nikes.
00:11:50And you can form a suspect from that.
00:11:51But anything distinctive helps us.
00:11:53You can see a camo jacket.
00:11:55And some Nikes.
00:11:56And you can form a suspect from that.
00:11:57It ends with this.
00:11:59This.
00:12:00And they're running away in the same direction that they came from.
00:12:01They fled through this.
00:12:02And they are wearing masks, three of them.
00:12:03And they are wearing masks, three of them.
00:12:04And they are wearing masks, three of them.
00:12:05So, that makes it challenging.
00:12:07But anything distinctive helps us.
00:12:09You can see a camo jacket.
00:12:10And some Nikes.
00:12:11And you can form a suspect from that.
00:12:16It ends with this.
00:12:21Where they're running away in the same direction that they came from.
00:12:26They fled through this area.
00:12:29And then back out this way.
00:12:31Likely to this road here.
00:12:34We have some areas of interest we can look for.
00:12:37Video surveillance.
00:12:38It might help us ID them a little better.
00:12:40There are some apartments here that look good.
00:12:43So, we have some things to do.
00:12:46But at least we have a starting point.
00:12:50Video is going to be the key in this case, I think.
00:12:52Because we don't have any suspects at this time.
00:12:54We will probably secure for the night here shortly.
00:12:57I'm just like prepping this for the next shift.
00:13:01And making sure like the list of cameras is theirs.
00:13:04And when they do their brief, they can divvy up and hit the ground running in the morning.
00:13:10This is a completely innocent victim.
00:13:12He was literally sleeping in his bed after a long day's work.
00:13:15I mean, it's horrible.
00:13:17And it also sucks because right now we don't have any answers.
00:13:20But our goal is to bring justice to the victim and for his family.
00:13:24This way you go.
00:13:25It's Friday.
00:13:26Let's wake it up.
00:13:27Ten hours in.
00:13:28All right, everybody's here.
00:13:29Ready?
00:13:30We are so ready.
00:13:31We're ready.
00:13:32The case is assigned to Corporal Rob Van Tyne, a 20-year veteran with the North Charleston
00:13:37Police Department.
00:13:38All right, so this happened last night.
00:13:39Um, I know the patrol responded at 2150 hours.
00:13:42There was three victims that were robbed.
00:13:45They said that four males robbed them.
00:13:48And then they fire shots backwards.
00:13:50As they're running off, the victim was sleeping in his trailer and got hit by gunfire.
00:13:54The patrol responded at 2150 hours.
00:13:56There was three victims that were robbed.
00:13:59They said that four males robbed them,
00:14:02and then they fired shots backwards.
00:14:04As they're running off, the victim was sleeping in his trailer
00:14:07and got hit by gunfire.
00:14:09They run towards this pond, and that's
00:14:11where you lose them from the camera.
00:14:13I imagine if you're going to take a car,
00:14:14you've got to go out Facet Road on up.
00:14:16You've got to go left on stall or right on stall.
00:14:18We need to see if there's any video that we can obtain.
00:14:22They actually have good video on the second building
00:14:25in that apartment complex.
00:14:26Also, Sergeant Bailey was saying somebody ran.
00:14:29They found a broken fence.
00:14:34So it could have been him jumping the fence
00:14:36into the apartment complex.
00:14:38There's a good chance to just look at the apartments.
00:14:40I agree.
00:14:41I think the main thing right now is just getting as much footage
00:14:43from the surrounding area as possible and see what we got,
00:14:46whether it's vehicle leaving or they're staying on foot
00:14:48and running.
00:14:49I can do that apartment complex.
00:14:51Oh, I said they have cameras there?
00:14:52Yeah, get all the cameras there from the external if we can.
00:14:54We got you, Banzon.
00:14:58So I came in this morning and noticed the night shift call
00:15:02out team responded to this, where it gets passed on
00:15:05to the next person in the rotation.
00:15:07I like being on scene, being the one who responds to it.
00:15:09Unfortunately, this one I'm not.
00:15:10So I have to review the notes that they did
00:15:12and then go from there.
00:15:14I just wish we had more information
00:15:15to go off of right now.
00:15:16There's nothing to connect the victims to the suspects.
00:15:19If we don't have a car, we don't have anything yet.
00:15:21So it's really a whodunit.
00:15:22So we'll see if the cameras and the footage,
00:15:25if we can develop some more leads.
00:15:35Back here in this corner is where they put a pallet over a fence,
00:15:38and you can see footprints where they're climbing over a fence.
00:15:50There's no video.
00:15:52The security cameras at the apartment complex aren't working.
00:15:57That's the ring camera on .
00:15:59But the team will canvas each apartment for doorbell cameras.
00:16:03So gives them a lot of problems.
00:16:08According to someone in the building,
00:16:10there have been complaints about two young men
00:16:12on the second floor.
00:16:14One of the males was sitting on this Kia yesterday.
00:16:17It's stolen out of city.
00:16:18The ignitions popped.
00:16:21You think they could be our bad guys?
00:16:23They're all just tracked back here.
00:16:25It's a possibility, yeah.
00:16:30I had a still shot of the suspects
00:16:32from our surveillance camera for the shooting.
00:16:34He picked out two from the four individuals.
00:16:38Detective David Pritchard showed the video image
00:16:40to the tipster.
00:16:41He said that he thinks the two in the middle
00:16:43are the two sons that live in this apartment.
00:16:46They may be our guys.
00:16:49We're going to do a knock and talk
00:16:50for reference to that stolen car.
00:16:53See if it has anything to do with our homicide.
00:16:55Detectives bring out a woman and her two teenage sons.
00:17:09Detectives bring out a woman and her two teenage sons.
00:17:14Come up here and knocked on the door.
00:17:20They opened the door, breached the marijuana.
00:17:23So we pulled everybody for investigative detention.
00:17:25Now we're going to get a search warrant type
00:17:27for the residents for anything related to this.
00:17:30What did we do?
00:17:31What did we do?
00:17:32I was the first time last night.
00:17:33We're going to find an incident.
00:17:34Calm down.
00:17:35I'm out.
00:17:36Hey, listen to what you see and calm down.
00:17:39I'm their mom.
00:17:40Maybe these kids were involved in the incident.
00:17:42Let's see.
00:17:43I wonder if there's a way we can downplay it
00:17:56and say some items were stolen.
00:17:59Let's get those items back.
00:18:00Maybe they'd be more forthcoming.
00:18:07Vantine starts with the older brother.
00:18:09Is that your apartment over there?
00:18:10I'll look past it.
00:18:11Yeah, my sister.
00:18:13Your sister's?
00:18:14How long have you been there?
00:18:15Um, we just recently moved there.
00:18:19So they came, they smelled marijuana, whatever.
00:18:21Is there anything else in there?
00:18:23Because I know they're going to go in there and look.
00:18:24Is there any weapons or anything like that?
00:18:26Like is there like a gun or something where they're
00:18:27going to find?
00:18:28Mm-hmm.
00:18:29I'm going to find it for the weed.
00:18:31Weed, any other substances or anything?
00:18:33Mm-hmm.
00:18:34I got you.
00:18:35OK, now basically, to be honest with me,
00:18:38did you take any items from some people in the trail park
00:18:40that we could, that we could somehow get back to them?
00:18:57I don't know, I didn't die.
00:18:59Did someone else take some items that you were with?
00:19:03I don't know.
00:19:09Because you know what happens is when we go through,
00:19:11we pull the surveillance video everywhere, right?
00:19:14The trail park and all that.
00:19:16So there's cameras on facet.
00:19:17There's cameras further down.
00:19:19So I just don't want you caught in a lie with that, OK?
00:19:23So I'm asking you to honestly, to be honest,
00:19:26if you were at that trail park.
00:19:29No.
00:19:32Last night, I've just been sleeping.
00:19:33You were at home the whole time?
00:19:34Yeah.
00:19:36And if it shows that you weren't in the house
00:19:38and you actually left, what then?
00:19:41Yeah, you can show me later.
00:19:43OK.
00:19:53Hey, how's it going, man?
00:19:54Vantine turns to the younger brother.
00:19:57And I'm going to be honest with you.
00:19:58Some items were taken from some people
00:20:02at a trailer park further down the road.
00:20:04Did you go over to that trailer park?
00:20:12So you stayed there the entire time?
00:20:15As a man, that's your word.
00:20:18OK.
00:20:20Be right back.
00:20:23So I can't say 100% that they're involved.
00:20:26I just know that right now, you have the path leading
00:20:30to their apartment.
00:20:32You have a man that's saying from the still images
00:20:34that two of them look like kids that belong to that apartment.
00:20:37And the fact that I feel just from interviewing
00:20:41that they're lying about last night kind of leads me
00:20:44to believe they're involved, but we'll see.
00:20:46Search warrant's going to be involved.
00:20:48I don't know if they're involved.
00:20:49I don't know if they're involved, but we'll see.
00:20:51Search warrant's going to be completed.
00:20:53Maybe there's a weapon in there.
00:20:55You never know.
00:20:56Cam is still talking to the mother.
00:20:58Maybe we'll get more information from her.
00:21:00So I'm going to be honest with you.
00:21:02So there was an incident that happened across the street
00:21:04at the trailer park on Stahl.
00:21:06Some Hispanics were robbed.
00:21:07And in the process, there were some individuals
00:21:09that shot at a trailer.
00:21:11And we arrived on CM, found a male deceased
00:21:13who was sleeping in this trailer.
00:21:15Those subjects then ran towards the apartments
00:21:20of where y'all are staying.
00:21:21And one of your sons were in the Kia just sitting there.
00:21:25And there have been a number of Kias stolen from the area.
00:21:28Do you know any reason why either one of your sons
00:21:31would be inside that Kia?
00:21:33Listen, I work from 7 in the morning
00:21:46until 7 in the night.
00:21:47Just now.
00:21:48I really see my kids sometimes.
00:21:50I work in a room that I got a goal to accomplish.
00:21:54I don't want this for them.
00:21:56I want better.
00:21:58Now, I can tell you, I'm not going to lie for my kids
00:22:02if I leave at home yesterday.
00:22:04Now, if they just broke in that car,
00:22:06then they've got to deal with the consequences.
00:22:08Yeah.
00:22:09There's no reason for them to have to do anything like this
00:22:14because I give them what they want.
00:22:16We're just following our leads
00:22:17and going upon our investigation.
00:22:20Have you ever seen either one of your sons
00:22:22carrying a firearm before?
00:22:24I'm against guns.
00:22:25I don't like guns.
00:22:27You know, that's just, I feel like what you need a gun for.
00:22:31But at no point in time yesterday
00:22:33you recall your sons leaving?
00:22:35No, they didn't leave.
00:22:37All right.
00:22:38Just give me a second, all right?
00:22:39All right.
00:22:43They're saying they're at home the entire time.
00:22:45Yeah, that's what she's saying.
00:22:47I feel like she would tell me otherwise.
00:22:50I honestly do believe as much as she was telling them
00:22:54to calm down on scene, like be respectful,
00:22:57I feel like she would tell us if they weren't in the house.
00:23:01Did she ask him anything about the car?
00:23:03The Kia.
00:23:05One of them were in the Kia.
00:23:07I didn't ask him.
00:23:09I'll ask the other one.
00:23:12Hey, quick question, too.
00:23:13There's a Kia that's parked out there.
00:23:16Were you inside that vehicle at all?
00:23:17What about your brother?
00:23:19Any of y'all inside that vehicle?
00:23:21Mm-hmm.
00:23:22Do you know who that vehicle belongs to?
00:23:24No.
00:23:25Do you know where it came from?
00:23:26Mm-hmm.
00:23:30All right.
00:23:38Same answer from the other guy.
00:23:41They don't know anything about the car and they're not in it.
00:23:44Those people put you in it.
00:23:46I think they're lying about that.
00:23:48Whether they're involved in this murder, I do not know.
00:23:50But we'll find out once we get the search warrant,
00:23:52we get more information from pulling the video cameras.
00:23:55At least we've locked them into statements.
00:23:57That's the important thing.
00:23:57We've locked them into statements,
00:23:58so we can either validate those statements
00:24:00or we can disprove them at this point.
00:24:02So we'll see what happens.
00:24:08Then...
00:24:09Hold on a second.
00:24:10Detective Pritchard calls in from the apartment complex.
00:24:12So we got video from before the shooting
00:24:14that shows those kids leaving this apartment.
00:24:17About what time?
00:24:192141, it looks like.
00:24:202141-ish.
00:24:22The video shows three men leaving the complex
00:24:2510 minutes before the call to 911.
00:24:28Just check your email or your text.
00:24:30Yeah, I got it coming through.
00:24:37That's their building.
00:24:38Mm-hmm.
00:24:40Oh, .
00:24:43It's absolutely hell, man.
00:24:46Yeah, what's up?
00:25:03100% that's them.
00:25:04The shoes, the camo jacket.
00:25:07Where are they coming from now?
00:25:09They're looking.
00:25:10You can't see no one's face.
00:25:11Does it have them coming back?
00:25:12Do we have a video of them coming back after you?
00:25:13I haven't seen one.
00:25:14Put this on the big screen of the computer,
00:25:15just so we can kind of get a better look at them.
00:25:16Here they are coming down.
00:25:17Here they are coming down.
00:25:18Six to 10 minutes before the murder.
00:25:19The doorbell video is from an apartment below the brothers.
00:25:20We don't have them coming down.
00:25:21We have them coming down.
00:25:22We have them coming down.
00:25:23We have them coming down.
00:25:24We have them coming down.
00:25:25We have them coming down.
00:25:26We have them coming down.
00:25:27We have them coming down.
00:25:29You can see the shoes apart.
00:25:30The shoes are not so good.
00:25:31You can't see them coming down.
00:25:32They are coming down.
00:25:33Let's see if we can get a better look at them.
00:25:34Just kind of get a better look at them.
00:25:35Here they are coming down.
00:25:36Six to 10 minutes before the murder.
00:25:37The doorbell video is from an apartment below the brothers.
00:25:42We have them coming out of the actual apartment.
00:25:44We have them coming down the stairs.
00:25:46In the shoes, sir.
00:25:47That's all you got.
00:25:51Now's for the green Nike.
00:25:57Let's print out the image of this.
00:26:01I'll go and talk to the mom, and then we'll
00:26:02try to get her to identify them.
00:26:06You ready?
00:26:08Hey, how's it going?
00:26:10I'm, uh, Detective Banton.
00:26:15Who's who?
00:26:21That don't look like none of them.
00:26:25Let me see.
00:26:26I don't know nobody who got green and white shoes.
00:26:29Nobody in my house got caught watching.
00:26:31All right, I'll show you something real quick.
00:26:33Let's do a video.
00:26:34Detective Cam Miller shows her the surveillance video
00:26:37from the crime scene.
00:26:40Oh, I don't know.
00:26:42Listen to me for a second.
00:26:43And I get it.
00:26:44You're their mom.
00:26:45You're supposed to protect them.
00:26:46And I wouldn't lie for them, either.
00:26:48Because right is right and wrong is wrong.
00:26:50And I'm going to be honest.
00:26:52I don't know who this is.
00:26:54I don't know.
00:26:55I do not know.
00:26:57I'm telling you.
00:26:59These green and white shoes, I never saw before.
00:27:02Okay.
00:27:16She's denying, basically knowing anybody.
00:27:18I would bet money they're involved, but we'll see.
00:27:20You have to get more.
00:27:21Then.
00:27:22Perfect.
00:27:24The team searching the brothers' apartment reaches out.
00:27:26So they found 9mm handguns in there, and there are 9mm blazers.
00:27:31They recovered two stolen guns and ammunition that's the same brand as the casings found at the crime scene.
00:27:38So I think we're on the right track here.
00:27:41That's good news.
00:27:42That would tie that apartment definitively.
00:27:45We'll test fire them here, and one of those weapons will hopefully match.
00:27:51So I'll confront them on it.
00:27:55Hey, how's it going, man?
00:28:00So, a couple 9mm were found in your house.
00:28:03I've got the cameras.
00:28:04I've got video of you leaving.
00:28:05I want to know, yesterday night, who was with you when you went over to the trailers?
00:28:24Where did the guns come from that were inside your apartment?
00:28:26Hmm?
00:28:34Your cousins?
00:28:36Was your cousin with you last night?
00:28:41But not last night?
00:28:44So he wasn't involved?
00:28:48So all I've got right now is you and your brother.
00:28:50That's a problem for you and your brother.
00:28:53I need you to come clean with me if there's a third person.
00:28:56Or, if you're the one who f***ed up, then say you f***ed up.
00:29:02And don't drag the other two down.
00:29:07Which one's you?
00:29:08He says he recognizes the men in the video from another apartment.
00:29:22He says he recognizes the men in the video from another apartment.
00:29:35There's a new apartment right here.
00:29:38There's other dudes that have a great damn side of us.
00:29:40Do you have them type jackets?
00:29:42Do you know their names?
00:29:46No.
00:29:54Lane check.
00:29:56Yeah.
00:29:57The original ring camera footage that was sent to me, he's got even more.
00:30:06The owner of the doorbell camera sends additional video clips.
00:30:17He comes and picks up laundry at 10.04.
00:30:20Mm-hmm.
00:30:21The video confirms the younger brother was at home at the time of the murder.
00:30:27Okay, so he's ruled out completely.
00:30:35They're going to test fire the gun.
00:30:37And right now, eyeballing it, they think it doesn't match.
00:30:39That's what we're getting at.
00:30:42The casings from the crime scene do not appear to have been fired from the recovered weapons.
00:30:51These aren't the guys.
00:30:53It's someone else that just happened to come from the apartments where they are.
00:30:57Obviously, if you smell anything, let everybody get out and we'll retain everybody, like we did the first time.
00:31:20You ready?
00:31:27You can come on here.
00:31:28I'll get you out of here.
00:31:32That's just bad luck.
00:31:33It was looking like these were going to be our guys.
00:31:37Sometimes you get it wrong, but you just don't know until you question them and try to get to the truth of the matter.
00:31:42They did have stolen guns and a stolen vehicle in their possession, so they are involved with criminal activity.
00:31:48Just not what we're investigating right now.
00:31:51We let them go.
00:31:52We can always charge them later if we want to.
00:31:54No rush on it right now.
00:31:55I mean, I'm frustrated that it didn't turn out, but the positive side is where that apartment is, the upstairs, these are our guys.
00:32:03So at least we have these three are 100%, so now it's just a matter of if we can identify them.
00:32:10And this one is the one that fired the shots on camera.
00:32:14So nice to figure out who he is.
00:32:16If we identify all four of these subjects, all four will be charged with murder.
00:32:20Hand of one, hand of all.
00:32:35March off the police!
00:32:36Good work!
00:32:45Nobody's coming to the door.
00:32:46Yeah.
00:32:47Problem has been long enough to hit it.
00:32:50I have a male wearing a camouflage hoodie.
00:32:53Who's in and out of that apartment?
00:32:55Miller recovers more doorbell video from an apartment across from the potential suspects.
00:33:00Oh, hold on.
00:33:02That might be our guy.
00:33:04Because one of the suspects had a camo jacket on.
00:33:07He's got a camo jacket.
00:33:10She's here.
00:33:10He wears it all the time.
00:33:13That's going to be one of our guys.
00:33:16I don't think we have enough video to maybe do a facial rec.
00:33:20We're on the right track.
00:33:21We got some stuff to go off of.
00:33:22We just got to follow up on it.
00:33:32Later that night.
00:33:33So I have these pictures that we got from this ring camera that's across the hall.
00:33:38So what I'm going to do is I'm going to take that picture and put it into Verkata and see what pops up.
00:33:44Our Verkata cameras are a city asset camera that we pay for to install.
00:33:48Two years ago, the city of North Charleston added over 700 surveillance cameras across the city to help reduce crime and improve police response time.
00:33:58They record things at major intersections.
00:34:00We can see everything from shootings to robberies to collisions to petty larcenies.
00:34:05They're extremely used for one of the best tools we have.
00:34:08The facial recognition software for Verkata.
00:34:10It's a very new feature they just added.
00:34:11It'll show up a bunch of different pictures who could possibly look like who I'm looking for.
00:34:18Okay, so I just put these into Verkata.
00:34:21What do you think, Malone?
00:34:22Come take a look at this real quick.
00:34:25This guy pops up right here with that exact same camo jacket.
00:34:30This was earlier that day, Thursday, April 25th.
00:34:36That's possibly one of the suspects right there.
00:34:38That looks like the guy from the ring camera video of his camo jacket right here.
00:35:01So we're seeing a potential suspect wearing similar clothes the same day as the shooting.
00:35:08He's walking alongside another male who's wearing similar clothes to what one of the other shooters is wearing.
00:35:16This dude looks like this dude right here.
00:35:19And then this guy right here with the long black shirt, dark pants and the black shoes.
00:35:24Looks like this guy right here.
00:35:28I think that could be two of our guys right there.
00:35:30This Verkata camera is located in our East Montague area.
00:35:36There is a school just down the street.
00:35:39Maybe somebody at the school would recognize those two.
00:35:41And then we're going to send these images up to SLED.
00:35:44That's our South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.
00:35:46They have a lot of resources that we don't have.
00:35:49Hopefully, we can at least get the ID of two of the suspects out of the four.
00:35:52The next afternoon.
00:36:06This is apartment 13.
00:36:09And this is a guy that associates there.
00:36:12I heard back from Reeves.
00:36:17He talked to the school resource officer.
00:36:19We have identified him as Tristan Robertson.
00:36:23He's the one in the camel jacket.
00:36:28In his DMV photo, he's also wearing a camel jacket.
00:36:3319-year-old Tristan Robertson, a former student at North Charleston High School, has no prior convictions.
00:36:39Now, look who he's walking with, the body build of this guy.
00:36:44Doesn't that not look very similar to this person?
00:36:48The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division ran the photo in their database and got a hit.
00:36:55Facial rag, he identified him as Kobe Bryant.
00:36:58He was convicted of strong-arm robbery.
00:37:01He also got convicted for failure to stop for blue lights, so he's known to run.
00:37:05After serving 10 months in jail for larceny and receiving stolen goods,
00:37:0922-year-old Kobe Bryant was released six months ago.
00:37:15I think this is Tristan.
00:37:17I don't know who this is.
00:37:19I think this is Kobe.
00:37:21So we're going to do, like, a workup on them,
00:37:23see if they're on probation, what their phone number is, all that.
00:37:28I hope we can get these guys in custody,
00:37:30because once we catch at least one of them, they'll hopefully snitch on the others.
00:37:33As the clock winds down...
00:37:41I'm Detective Vantine.
00:37:44I'm assigned to the case for both the robbery and the homicide.
00:37:48Vantine meets with Eriberto's family and the three robbery victims.
00:37:51When we came in on Thursday, we had no idea who did this.
00:37:55Friday, we ended up pulling video from the area
00:37:58and got a description of possible suspects.
00:38:01Now, today, we've got possible names,
00:38:04and we're trying to piece that together.
00:38:06So we're actually a lot closer than we were.
00:38:10Sometimes these investigations take time.
00:38:13Let them know the second we make an arrest,
00:38:15the second we make an arrest,
00:38:16they are the first people we will call and let them know.
00:38:19Please, we would really appreciate that.
00:38:22Oh, definitely. We're working hard, trust me.
00:38:23We are doing our best we can.
00:38:25So, this is important, Detective,
00:38:27that they understand.
00:38:31Yeah.
00:38:32Yeah.
00:38:36The best police department there is, no trust, period.
00:38:44They're the best.
00:38:46You don't worry about that.
00:38:47Solo let them work, right?
00:38:48And work with the situation, but they need time.
00:38:51It's going to be okay.
00:38:53Okay.
00:38:54Tamo.
00:39:08In the first 48,
00:39:11North Charleston detectives responded
00:39:13to the murder of the murder of Heriberto Martinez Martinez,
00:39:16killed in his sleep by a stray bullet during a robbery,
00:39:19spoke to the robbery victims,
00:39:20who said four men fled the scene,
00:39:22firing as they ran,
00:39:24discovered video surveillance that tracked three of the men
00:39:27to an apartment complex near the crime scene,
00:39:29identified two of the possible suspects
00:39:31as Tristan Robertson and Kobe Bryant,
00:39:34but all four suspects are still at large.
00:39:37Two days later.
00:39:48One of our guys that I think we've identified in the photo,
00:39:52Kobe Bryant,
00:39:53is going to meet with his PO.
00:39:55Detectives head out to meet with Kobe's parole officers,
00:39:58hoping to question Kobe.
00:40:00We just want to talk to him,
00:40:01see about if he will identify himself,
00:40:03and also see if his PO will identify him
00:40:05from that photo that we have.
00:40:10Is that her?
00:40:15Hey, how you doing?
00:40:17Thank you so much for meeting with us.
00:40:19I'm Detective Vantime.
00:40:19Nice to meet you.
00:40:20Same here.
00:40:21Let me show you a photo.
00:40:24Yep, that looks like him.
00:40:26That definitely I can tell is Kobe.
00:40:28That's Kobe?
00:40:29Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:40:31Is he pretty cooperative?
00:40:32Would he talk with us?
00:40:33I think so.
00:40:34Because believe it or not,
00:40:35you don't want to go back to jail.
00:40:37Helps us.
00:40:37Like, we'll try our best to help him.
00:40:40He's texting.
00:40:41He said 10 minutes.
00:40:42Okay.
00:40:44Thanks, guys.
00:40:44Yeah.
00:40:47Well, that's a good sign.
00:40:48She's pretty much thinking that's him.
00:40:49And it's just a matter of getting him
00:40:52to just say, that's me.
00:40:54And once he admits that, we have him.
00:40:57And all we have to do is,
00:40:58at that point,
00:40:59is see if he'll give up the other names.
00:41:02Yes, ma'am.
00:41:17All right.
00:41:20I'm going to go hot.
00:41:22Come on.
00:41:26Kobe spots the detectives
00:41:28and takes off.
00:41:30Woo!
00:41:54Can I have an EMS to the Lonnie Hamilton building?
00:41:57Myself and the suspects.
00:41:58He fell after a brief foot chase.
00:42:02Do you know how many of you
00:42:03sort of poke me or stick me or anything with that man?
00:42:06He just took off running.
00:42:07I caught him on the other side of the parking lot.
00:42:12We just wanted to talk to him.
00:42:13So it makes it look a little weird that he just takes off
00:42:16running as soon as we get out of the car.
00:42:23Kobe Bryant's parole officer approaches Miller.
00:42:28He looks like something that I wanted to keep doing.
00:42:32OK.
00:42:32Hello, what's up, man?
00:42:33He's there.
00:42:34What's in there, man?
00:42:35Tristan?
00:42:35Tristan?
00:42:36Your car?
00:42:36No.
00:42:37I'm not here.
00:42:38Inside the car is the other person of interest,
00:42:41Tristan Robertson.
00:42:42Vanton.
00:42:43It's Tristan in the backseat.
00:42:44OK.
00:42:45Hey, closer to that backseat is detained after you.
00:42:54Tristan?
00:42:54Tristan?
00:42:55OK.
00:42:55All right.
00:42:56We're chasing right back.
00:42:57We got anything in here.
00:42:57What the ?
00:42:58All right, man.
00:42:59He's good.
00:43:00I thought we were going to go sit at the hospital.
00:43:03We'll take him to the detective day right now.
00:43:05While Kobe is taken to the hospital for evaluation,
00:43:08Tristan is detained for questioning.
00:43:11We got Tristan and Kobe.
00:43:13Tristan was in the backseat to board up.
00:43:15Hopefully, he'll talk to us, though,
00:43:16because they're not happy right now.
00:43:25That's Tristan Robertson.
00:43:27Going to go in and try to interview him,
00:43:29see if he'll admit that he's in the photos.
00:43:32What do y'all need?
00:43:33A few kind words, some support.
00:43:35You got this.
00:43:37You want a chest bump?
00:43:38You want me to punch you in the chest?
00:43:40Oh, OK.
00:43:41Where are y'all going in to hurt him?
00:43:45Hey, man, you need any water or anything?
00:43:47You sure?
00:43:51OK, I'll try to get you home as quick as I can.
00:43:54Obviously, you saw what happened out there, right?
00:43:55Running and all that.
00:44:00I know.
00:44:00That's awesome, dude.
00:44:01How old are you, man?
00:44:0219.
00:44:0319?
00:44:04What grade did you complete in school?
00:44:0611.
00:44:07You got your G.A.D. or anything?
00:44:08No.
00:44:09I got you.
00:44:09You go and work on that?
00:44:10Yeah.
00:44:10That's all I'm trying to work on now.
00:44:12Sweet.
00:44:12What do you do for a living, though?
00:44:13I work at Emily Oil.
00:44:14Oh, OK.
00:44:15I got you.
00:44:17No, basically, I just want to talk to you about some things.
00:44:20I want to show you some pictures.
00:44:21That's it.
00:44:22I don't know why he did what he did, but we'll talk to him as well.
00:44:27I want to show a picture.
00:44:28This is off of, like, Jenkins Avenue.
00:44:33This is April 25th, which is a Thursday.
00:44:36Vantine shows Tristan the photo from city cameras taken six hours before the homicide.
00:44:42I mean, you have a camouflage jacket like that?
00:44:46No.
00:44:47I used to when I was, that was back in 2021.
00:44:52That how me?
00:44:53I don't know.
00:44:54That's not me.
00:44:57I was with my granny Thursday and Friday.
00:45:00Where's your granny house?
00:45:02West Ashley.
00:45:03The reason is because, so, there was an incident that happened on Thursday night.
00:45:08Where?
00:45:09Around Midland Park and Stahl.
00:45:12I think you were with some people that messed up.
00:45:14Me?
00:45:15Yes.
00:45:16I'm asking you, trying to treat you as a witness here.
00:45:18They ain't you here.
00:45:19That's not me, though.
00:45:21I'm telling you, that's not me.
00:45:22Where I was at, you can call my dad and my grandma.
00:45:25So you stayed in West Ashley the entire time on Friday?
00:45:28I got you.
00:45:30Vantine shows him another photo taken by a city camera the day after the shooting.
00:45:39So you're saying that ain't you?
00:45:41That looked like North Charleston.
00:45:42Yeah, it's North Charleston.
00:45:43But you're saying you and West Ashley on this date?
00:45:53You're saying, like, the pictures are completely wrong?
00:45:55Like, we could...
00:45:56I don't know.
00:45:57I don't know.
00:45:58You're saying you in an area that you're claiming you're not.
00:46:01We have cameras all over the city.
00:46:02We have cameras all over Stahl Road.
00:46:04We have cameras all over Fassett.
00:46:05I was not on Stahl Road.
00:46:06You see what I'm saying?
00:46:06I was not on Stahl Road.
00:46:10I don't know what you're talking about, what happened on Stahl Road.
00:46:12I was not on Stahl Road.
00:46:15You can just get me a look.
00:46:16I don't know what it's going at.
00:46:18OK.
00:46:22I'll be back.
00:46:22I told you I was at it, so...
00:46:24You sit tight.
00:46:35He's just denying everything.
00:46:36He didn't know what to say.
00:46:37I think he shouldn't have left.
00:46:39No.
00:46:40He said, that's not me.
00:46:41And then, Lord, like, he literally said he's in West Ashley.
00:46:45He never left West Ashley.
00:46:51A few minutes later...
00:46:52Hi, I tell ya.
00:46:53...Kobe arrives at headquarters.
00:46:55I decided to be able to talk to you in just a second.
00:46:58We'll get Detective Butler to try to talk to him.
00:47:00Maybe it'd be better that someone who wasn't on scene when he ran and ran after him would be probably better.
00:47:05He's requested to speak to Sergeant Mike Brown, who used to mentor him when he was a younger kid.
00:47:11The detective Kobe requested is currently working for the chief of police.
00:47:16So I'm gonna get in contact with him to see if he'd be willing to come down and speak to Kobe.
00:47:21The murder's at 9.50 PM.
00:47:22Yeah.
00:47:23This is at 3.50 on the day of the murder.
00:47:25You get him to identify himself, that's gonna be Kobe, and that's gonna be Tristan.
00:47:29The murder's at 9.50 PM.
00:47:30Tiff found this picture on Kobe's Facebook, and those shoes are the green Nike.
00:47:39The Facebook photo of Kobe was posted four months ago.
00:47:43His shoes match.
00:47:44If you watch the actual video, the shoes match from his picture there.
00:47:49All right, I'll go talk to him.
00:47:55All right.
00:47:55I've been brought up to state on what's going on here.
00:47:59Who is that?
00:48:02Butler shows him a photo from a city camera on the day of the shooting.
00:48:06I don't know who that is.
00:48:09No idea who that is?
00:48:10No.
00:48:14But you know what happened Thursday?
00:48:16No, I don't know what happened to you.
00:48:20Let me ask you a question.
00:48:20Do you have some, um, white and teal or bluish, like high top Nike or whatever?
00:48:26Did you let, you know what I'm talking about?
00:48:28It's on your, you're wearing them on your Facebook page.
00:48:29Hey, man.
00:48:34That's what you, that's what you, that's what you, that's what, right?
00:48:35Yeah.
00:48:36I go and see the bitch's office in there.
00:48:38Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on.
00:48:40Kobe, hold on.
00:48:41You know how we roll, right?
00:48:43Yeah, sure.
00:48:43You have those shoes, right?
00:48:45Nope.
00:48:46Not a moment.
00:48:47Did you give those shoes to somebody?
00:48:48None of them was supposed to give them to me.
00:48:51But I didn't give them.
00:48:52I left them at a friend's house.
00:48:54When?
00:48:55Long time.
00:48:56Okay.
00:48:57All right.
00:48:57We'll talk to you for a minute.
00:49:02Listen, man.
00:49:03How long have we known each other?
00:49:05A long time.
00:49:06Long time.
00:49:06I know your family, all right?
00:49:11I know you.
00:49:13And that may be the case, but they don't have you up here for no reason.
00:49:18I've been doing this for a long time.
00:49:20I'm telling you 100%, everything that they're asking you, they know the answers to for the most part.
00:49:26They're not just asking you for no reason.
00:49:28This is your opportunity to help yourself out as best you can.
00:49:33There's only one thing I need from you.
00:49:34What's that?
00:49:37I need for you to at least tell me the truth.
00:49:56Colby, listen to me.
00:49:57I don't want to see you throw your life away, dude.
00:49:59Me neither.
00:50:01I'll just come home.
00:50:02It's time to get my life back together.
00:50:05Right, and I don't want to see anything happen to you.
00:50:08But if you're not telling the truth, you know what's going to happen.
00:50:12But I had nothing to do with this information.
00:50:14I had nothing to do with it.
00:50:15I don't even know what's going on.
00:50:18I'm not saying that you did anything, that you shot somebody.
00:50:23But I know you might be a witness to it.
00:50:26Witness to a murder?
00:50:27I didn't know nothing about no murder, no nothing.
00:50:32I didn't know it was something that happened on Star Road last week.
00:50:34I saw it on Facebook.
00:50:37So what happened?
00:50:38I don't know.
00:50:39They said somebody being robbed or some
00:50:40.
00:50:41You know there's a difference between being a suspect and a witness, right?
00:50:57I'm innocent.
00:50:58I'm innocent.
00:50:59What's the difference?
00:51:00I ain't a suspect.
00:51:01I'm innocent bystander.
00:51:03Right.
00:51:03And what's a witness?
00:51:05Someone has knowledge of me.
00:51:06I don't got knowledge of .
00:51:08Right.
00:51:08So there's two different things?
00:51:10Yes.
00:51:10I guess I don't have to be real.
00:51:11I don't have knowledge of what happened Thursday night.
00:51:13And I was not a suspect of that happened Thursday night.
00:51:17Got you.
00:51:18Right.
00:51:18I understand what you're saying.
00:51:19That's what you're trying to say.
00:51:22I'm trying to understand what's going on.
00:51:23I wasn't there.
00:51:26And if I was there, I would have told you what there, but I wasn't there.
00:51:32What if there's something that shows different?
00:51:33If something shows different, then I ain't me.
00:51:37I ain't me.
00:51:37I don't want to be here with you.
00:51:42It's Sergeant Bailey.
00:51:44What's up, man?
00:51:44Yes, sir.
00:51:46So, I know you've been in here talking to Sergeant Brown, because I've been listening.
00:51:50He's not lying to you when he tells you that we have a lot more than what you think we have.
00:51:56I want to waste some stuff down on the table for you, all right?
00:52:00Because we've been investigating this thing since it happened last Thursday night.
00:52:04All right.
00:52:04So, you know that the city has thousands of cameras around it?
00:52:09All right.
00:52:10I'm afraid she'll live.
00:52:11Yeah.
00:52:11Let's just make this real easy, okay?
00:52:15Who is that?
00:52:18You.
00:52:19I'm not trying to trick you.
00:52:21All right.
00:52:21What's the time frame on that?
00:52:23It's 427.
00:52:26Okay.
00:52:26This is East Montague.
00:52:28I'm trying to jog in memory.
00:52:30All right.
00:52:31Same area, same day.
00:52:35Who's that?
00:52:36Bailey shows him a photo of Tristan.
00:52:38What the f*** my lawyer?
00:52:40What the f*** my lawyer?
00:52:42What the f*** my lawyer?
00:52:44What the f*** my lawyer?
00:52:45I don't know who that is.
00:52:49You don't know who that is?
00:52:50I met him today.
00:52:51I know.
00:52:52I met him today.
00:52:55I don't know who that is.
00:52:59You met him today?
00:53:00Yes.
00:53:01Colby, you don't lie to the man.
00:53:04Look at me.
00:53:04You met him the day when you went to this man on Thursday.
00:53:08It's not a trick question.
00:53:09All right, Thursday.
00:53:11Like I said, I was trying to see my P.O.
00:53:14He was there.
00:53:19Okay.
00:53:19You have to understand what I'm trying to tell you.
00:53:22You're in a situation.
00:53:23I know I'm in this situation.
00:53:25Yeah, I want you to understand how bad this situation is.
00:53:27It's not a situation.
00:53:27It ain't got nothing to do with me.
00:53:28And I've got your P.O. telling me, when they watch your video, this person right here?
00:53:36That dude, right there.
00:53:38Supposed to be me, huh?
00:53:39So he's saying that in here.
00:53:44If you're with Tristan.
00:53:45All these pictures right here, y'all got me in this s***.
00:53:47Finally, nothing wrong in this s***.
00:53:52So you're admitting that's you?
00:53:53Nope.
00:53:54That's me, all right.
00:53:55That's me, that's me, and that's me.
00:53:57That's me, that's me.
00:53:59Well, I got a black hat on in these pictures.
00:54:01Where the f***ing green hat comes from?
00:54:02I don't know.
00:54:02A jacket.
00:54:03Thing I'm trying to let you know is all these guys right here,
00:54:07even away from this apartment complex,
00:54:09which is less than 300 yards away from where the incident location happened.
00:54:13Wearing the same clue.
00:54:14I don't got no green hat.
00:54:16I don't care what you got.
00:54:18What's wrong with you guys?
00:54:19What's wrong with you, Kobe?
00:54:20I have not seen any of this.
00:54:21All right, let's hear this.
00:54:23You share with Sergeant Bailey more than you share with me, and I know you.
00:54:26All right, but could I...
00:54:27Kobe, I know you.
00:54:28How do you make me feel?
00:54:30But you didn't tell me about any of this.
00:54:32I didn't know they had none of this s***.
00:54:34Look at ass.
00:54:35I love you, I love you.
00:54:36I'm gonna speak to my lawyer.
00:54:38All right, I'm gonna speak to my lawyer, bruh.
00:54:40I don't know the s***.
00:54:41I'm gonna speak to my lawyer.
00:54:42I'm leaving.
00:54:42He's staying as your friend.
00:54:43I'm leaving.
00:54:44I don't got no friends, I don't got no friends, bruh.
00:54:46I'm gonna speak to my lawyer.
00:54:48I understand, but Kobe, listen to what I'm telling you.
00:54:52Turn around, man, let's talk.
00:54:53Turn around, let's talk.
00:54:55That's disrespectful to turn your back on me.
00:54:57You know what, man?
00:54:57Y'all ain't giving me s***.
00:54:58Y'all saying I was a mom and an armed robber.
00:55:00That's some s***.
00:55:00I'm not talking about that no more.
00:55:02All right.
00:55:03I'm here for you.
00:55:06I think this is the best detective unit in the state,
00:55:08probably in the world.
00:55:09They're great at what they do.
00:55:12They'll find the truth.
00:55:13I guarantee you that.
00:55:14They'll find it, but I wouldn't do it.
00:55:16They'll find the truth.
00:55:16Yeah.
00:55:18I'm always around, so call me if you need to talk to me about this.
00:55:22All right.
00:55:28He lawyered up, so it's not what he can do.
00:55:30Oh, yeah, he lawyered up.
00:55:32He was being faced with too much music.
00:55:34But I did leave him with, I'll be here.
00:55:36I think just have somebody call me.
00:55:38We'll talk it out.
00:55:41When I got the call that he was down here, I had to get prepared to put the Big Brother coat on.
00:55:46Sergeant Mike Brown first met Kobe several years ago as a school resource officer.
00:55:51I played football with his uncle in high school.
00:55:54And he walked up to me like, hey, you know my family.
00:55:58And so we formed a pretty good rapport, good relationship.
00:56:01And I always kept that door open with him like, hey, man, if you need something,
00:56:06I'm there for you.
00:56:07But in this case, it's different.
00:56:08I mean, it's a murder.
00:56:09So it's kind of hard to break that barrier right now.
00:56:14Probation officer called just now.
00:56:17Yeah.
00:56:18Kobe's mom called her.
00:56:20She found credit cards and debit cards with Hispanic names in Christian's room.
00:56:26According to the parole officer, the cards were found in a bedroom
00:56:29shared by Kobe's two younger brothers.
00:56:32Kobe's got a brother named Christian and a brother named Jameson.
00:56:36Christian Bryant.
00:56:4220-year-old Christian Bryant has no prior convictions.
00:56:48This is Jameson Bryant.
00:56:5018-year-old Jameson Bryant also has no prior convictions.
00:56:55The thing is, is we have four suspects.
00:56:57So it could be all of them and Tristan.
00:56:59That's what I'm thinking.
00:57:05It's going to be, it's going to be him, his two brothers, probably, and Tristan.
00:57:09That witness approach may be failing with him because he knows it's his brother.
00:57:13He's going to be the shooter.
00:57:15hell.
00:57:17Let's go.
00:57:18We got to get a search warrant going.
00:57:19We need to get someone over there to get those.
00:57:22Give Tiffany the phone number.
00:57:25Because Tiffany's going to go with Gina and Cockrell.
00:57:28That's her apartment.
00:57:32That's her contact number.
00:57:33Okay.
00:57:35Really, if we can get the names on the cards, and then we'll still do a search warrant.
00:57:39I hope they come back to our victims.
00:57:43I think these are our guys.
00:57:44What the hell is that?
00:57:46them!
00:57:49If the credit card comes back to one of the victims that was robbed, that would seal the deal.
00:57:58I'll put you on speaker when you repeat that.
00:58:12Caitlin just got a call back from the armed robbery victim.
00:58:17He confirmed that that bank card is his.
00:58:19Thank you so much.
00:58:24That's awesome.
00:58:24That's great news.
00:58:25Bye.
00:58:26Copher's son fled the residence, and she doesn't know where they are.
00:58:32According to their mother, Christian and Jameson left home after hearing Coby was
00:58:36detained and won't return her calls.
00:58:39Coby was staying with his girlfriend, which is in Goose Creek.
00:58:43That means the clothing's probably in her house in Goose Creek.
00:58:47The team will get warrants to search Coby's girlfriend's house,
00:58:50and his mother's house, for additional evidence.
00:58:54It's his two brothers.
00:58:55That's why he can't.
00:58:56That's why he won't play, because he can't ride on his brothers.
00:59:00I think with the credit card being found now that belonging to the victim,
00:59:03I think, obviously, murder charge on him.
00:59:06And there it's a game.
00:59:06I think you can go murder on him.
00:59:07I'm going to go murder on him, because he's with him.
00:59:09Before and after.
00:59:10What the ?
00:59:12He's going on.
00:59:15What the ?
00:59:16He's going on.
00:59:22I don't like the way this thing's going.
00:59:28All right.
00:59:28Where are you going to jail for?
00:59:30Just told me.
00:59:30They found some stuff at your mama's house, baby.
00:59:34And that's not cool.
00:59:35Like that ain't cool, because I'm sure your mama ain't have nothing to do?
00:59:38Mama sure, she don't.
00:59:40And I don't either.
00:59:41So who has access to your mom's house, besides you and your brothers?
00:59:44They don't.
00:59:45And my mom.
00:59:49So which one of them might be involved in this?
01:00:05Well, I don't know which one of them are going to be involved today.
01:00:08I don't know.
01:00:08I get it.
01:00:10I understand.
01:00:11It's tough.
01:00:11I can't put your fingers like that .
01:00:16I can't think nothing but nothing.
01:00:20Put the charges on.
01:00:21They're probably going to charge you with murder.
01:00:24Don't put your mom through this, bro.
01:00:32Don't do it.
01:00:33You've got to be responsible for anything that you've done or anything that you have knowledge of.
01:00:37Really?
01:00:38I didn't find out my mama's house.
01:00:41I don't know what you're talking about.
01:00:42I don't know what you're talking about.
01:00:47All right.
01:00:50If you know I'm talking to me, you know where I'm at.
01:00:52You know what I'm getting.
01:00:52Contact me.
01:00:53See if the answers before.
01:00:57He's not coming off.
01:00:58He's going to tell on a brother, you know?
01:01:00So I understand, but it's what it is.
01:01:07Sounds like his brothers are involved.
01:01:11Some of the things may be at his mother's house.
01:01:13It's a sad situation, but it never has to happen this way.
01:01:17We all have choices.
01:01:18I told him if he wants to talk to us, he knows how to get in touch with me.
01:01:24All right, we're going to transport you to jail.
01:01:26That's what you want to do.
01:01:26What are my charges?
01:01:27Murder.
01:01:27Murder?
01:01:28Yeah, murder.
01:01:29Me?
01:01:30Yeah, you.
01:01:30How the is this?
01:01:31What?
01:01:32I get a murder.
01:01:33Boy, this is stupid.
01:01:35That's not me, bro.
01:01:36Wrong person.
01:01:36Ain't no murder.
01:01:38Well, you're being charged with murder.
01:01:39That's the down, bro.
01:01:40That's the down.
01:01:41Stupid as a bitch.
01:01:42I'm going to transport you to the jail, so.
01:01:43I'm going to transport you to the jail, so.
01:01:45Dumb-ass people.
01:01:47Dumb-ass .
01:01:49Taking that all the way to trial, .
01:01:52Call it.
01:01:52It's been a good day.
01:01:54We actually got two suspects in custody for murder.
01:01:57So out of the three suspects, that's Tristan Robertson, and that's Kobe Bryant.
01:02:04This person we do not know, and he's the shooter.
01:02:07There's actually a fourth suspect that's not pictured here, that shows up with them.
01:02:11I believe it's going to be his brothers.
01:02:14It's just not proving it.
01:02:25The next day.
01:02:25This is Kobe's mom.
01:02:35Kobe's probation officer wrote me an email this morning saying that Kobe's mom wanted to talk to us.
01:02:41She wants to provide additional information because she thinks that her other son is involved with the homicide.
01:02:47She wants to talk to us.
01:02:48Ah, breathe, breathe, breathe, breathe, breathe.
01:02:53Oh yeah, I want to protect the ban time.
01:02:55Nice to meet you.
01:02:58I got here.
01:02:58Two sons that live with you are, um, uh, Christian with a K?
01:03:03Yes.
01:03:04And the other one is Jameson?
01:03:05Yes.
01:03:06Where are they now?
01:03:07I have no clue.
01:03:08When did Kobe move out?
01:03:13Kobe's been gone for about a month, and I found out what I found out yesterday.
01:03:17What'd you find out?
01:03:18Well, what I heard from Kobe's PO is that at first he was being detained, and he was supposed
01:03:23to be a person of interest to the robbery.
01:03:27Um, and I was like, what? Like that? You know, I'm shocked.
01:03:31So she was just filling me in what's going on, and she said it was a Mexican person that
01:03:37died. I was like, what? I was like, it's funny when she said that, I was like, well,
01:03:42I found a Mexican check in my house. Friday.
01:03:46Yes.
01:03:46When I went inside the room, it was sitting on the floor, so I picked it up, and I looked
01:03:50at it. I'm like, I'm sure there's nobody in my house, so when Christian got back, I was like,
01:03:56well, whose check is this? Oh, I found it on the ground. I said, well, why would you be stupid
01:04:01to pick it up and bring it home? Just get rid of it. He said he tore it up, and he threw it away.
01:04:08Sunday passed. I found another check. And there's a credit card, too, so now that everything is
01:04:13added, I said, well, let me just let her know what's going on. You know what I'm saying?
01:04:17Yeah, yeah. I really appreciate that.
01:04:21I know it's hard.
01:04:22Pull forward. I couldn't have a farm like this.
01:04:26Tristan?
01:04:27I don't know who Tristan is.
01:04:28We got him.
01:04:30This doesn't look like him. Dad looks like who?
01:04:34Oh. And look at that one, too.
01:04:37Oh, yeah. That's definitely Jameson.
01:04:40Which one is?
01:04:41That's definitely Jameson.
01:04:42He's the only one that wears this third crew jacket.
01:04:46She IDs the suspected shooter as her 18-year-old son, Jameson.
01:04:53Do you think Christian would be with him? Do you think he'd be one of the guys running in the video?
01:04:58I'm not sure.
01:05:05All right, I can call him if you need me, too.
01:05:06Yeah, you can ask me.
01:05:08No, I'm going to just be scared at one time, because, I mean, I don't have time to just check
01:05:12the court or something.
01:05:13Your name?
01:05:16I'm going to ask you honestly.
01:05:18You got something to do with this robbery, too?
01:05:25How do you mean you've been with them?
01:05:28So, you've been there when the robberies are playing, too?
01:05:31Because the surveillance touches I'm looking at.
01:05:33I expect all three of them look like y'all.
01:05:35I, I, Jameson been there, too?
01:05:38I need you to ask my question.
01:05:40Was Jameson with y'all?
01:05:42Y'all knew what y'all did.
01:05:44When I found them checks and I asked you about them checks,
01:05:46why y'all did what y'all did?
01:05:48Y'all, you know somebody did?
01:05:52You're not involved in it, but you've been there when the robbery was going on?
01:05:56You don't, you know, I'm going to speak on the phone,
01:05:58so would you like to come in and talk a question right now?
01:06:00Because this is serious matters to y'all.
01:06:05If you ain't did nothing, then why are you running?
01:06:11I ain't the person that you, he hung up.
01:06:14You know, you said Jameson was with him?
01:06:15Yes.
01:06:16He said, of course.
01:06:17Oh, is that what he said?
01:06:18I couldn't hear.
01:06:18Yeah.
01:06:19So, that's all three of my kids and...
01:06:21And the other one?
01:06:22Yeah.
01:06:23So, I don't know what else to do.
01:06:24No, you've done a lot.
01:06:26I appreciate you calling him and all that.
01:06:28And if you can convince him to come and meet with us at some point, not now, I mean, just, you know.
01:06:33No, he needed to come out.
01:06:34He knows that's what he hung up.
01:06:38I really appreciate it.
01:06:40No problem.
01:06:41I think that's about it.
01:06:42I know we have your number.
01:06:44As far as a victim, I know I'm probably not allowed to reach out to them because they are my kids,
01:06:49you know what I'm saying?
01:06:50But can I express my sympathy?
01:06:52You know, I do just apologize for it.
01:06:54I can't take it back, but you know, it's just not right at the end of the day.
01:06:58Oh gosh.
01:06:59They make their own choices.
01:07:02Okay?
01:07:03Don't put that on you.
01:07:07Yeah, of course you can't come back.
01:07:08That it wasn't because of choices you made.
01:07:13I'm fine.
01:07:14I'm not here today.
01:07:15Okay.
01:07:16I'm trying to focus.
01:07:17Okay.
01:07:17But, Sarah, I'll reach out to see what I can do.
01:07:20And I'll let you know.
01:07:21I didn't go from there.
01:07:22It's fine.
01:07:24No problem.
01:07:24She is so cooperative.
01:07:29An amazingly wonderful cooperative mother.
01:07:33And all three of her kids are involved.
01:07:34I feel horrible for her.
01:07:35Sure.
01:07:36She identified one in the middle saying that looks like Jameson.
01:07:39And then she called Christian on the phone and he said he was there.
01:07:43And Jameson was there for the robbery.
01:07:46And on speaker?
01:07:47Yeah.
01:07:50They're in the wind.
01:07:51And she's going to try to call them and try to get them to come in.
01:07:55That made the case right there.
01:07:57Helping us to bring justice to this family quicker than it would have been done if she
01:08:02hadn't come in and gave us that information.
01:08:04She was upset.
01:08:05She said that she wanted to appear in court just so she can see the victims and tell them how
01:08:11sorry she is that her sons did this.
01:08:15Our two outstanding defendants, I will send the warrants over to our marshal's task force.
01:08:21And they will start tracking them so we can locate them and safely effect an arrest on them.
01:08:26Eight days later.
01:08:38So it's going to be this brick house right here.
01:08:42The marshals track Christian and Jameson to a relative's house in Glen Terrace.
01:08:48We're surrounding the house and we're going to try to get them out peacefully.
01:08:52Let's swap on standby just in case.
01:08:56We're going to try to get them out quickly.
01:08:58We're going to try to get them out quickly.
01:08:59We're going to try to get them out quickly.
01:09:20Negotiations are in progress right now and we're standing by.
01:09:24We know they're armed.
01:09:25We know they're dangerous.
01:09:26So we just want to take all precautions to make sure the citizens nearby don't get hurt,
01:09:30nor any officers, nor them.
01:09:35Ready.
01:09:37As the team approaches the house,
01:09:43the brothers flee out the back.
01:09:4420-year-old Christian Bryant is taken into custody.
01:09:4920-year-old Christian Bryant is taken into custody.
01:10:12You good?
01:10:13But the suspected shooter, Jameson Bryant is nowhere to be found.
01:10:22So I did not locate him in the house, but he slipped out.
01:10:26It's still a win.
01:10:27It's still a win in the book.
01:10:29Three down, one to go.
01:10:37Christian.
01:10:38Bryant, I know you know what you wrote here in reference to.
01:10:43I want to get your side of the story of what happened.
01:10:49Listen, I've known y'all for a long time.
01:10:50I get it.
01:10:51Accidents happen, bad shit happens all the time.
01:10:54It's hard to talk about because it's .
01:10:57But you can't get over the facts of the case.
01:11:00We have video of the incident.
01:11:02We have video leaving the apartment.
01:11:04The facts are what they are.
01:11:06This is your chance to tell me what happened.
01:11:11We walked over to the trailer bar.
01:11:13It was like, come on, let's go for a walk.
01:11:15I was like a walk.
01:11:16I'm like, oh, you got the car.
01:11:17You can just drive.
01:11:18It was like right around the corner.
01:11:19So I was like, it's cool.
01:11:22So what happened?
01:11:23How did it go down?
01:11:25I guess.
01:11:27They saw a couple of guys and then went.
01:11:29Everything just happened too fast for me.
01:11:30So I was in the back with no clue.
01:11:32Just going along with .
01:11:33Once everything happened, I guess I run with them.
01:11:36Okay.
01:11:37How many people have firearms that have with you?
01:11:39The only one that I know of.
01:11:42Okay.
01:11:43And is that Jameson?
01:11:49Okay.
01:11:50So you did not have a firearm?
01:11:54No, no.
01:11:55I promise you no.
01:11:56Did Kobe have a firearm?
01:11:57Not that I'm aware of, no.
01:11:58Did Tristan have a firearm?
01:11:59Yeah, I'm sure no.
01:12:00So I'll say this.
01:12:01All evidence is pointing to Jameson as the one that had the gun.
01:12:04I'm not saying that you're saying that, but all evidence is showing me that.
01:12:08Right.
01:12:10And when are the shots fired?
01:12:12So you're fleeing and you hear gunshots as y'all are running away?
01:12:23Yeah.
01:12:28You know bullets don't have names, right?
01:12:29Exactly.
01:12:30I don't.
01:12:31I understand you did not shoot, but yeah, bullets don't have names.
01:12:35Let me ask you something.
01:12:36Why did they come in here prior to?
01:12:39Once they had murder, I was like, eh, I don't think I must trust Ms. Silicon Valley.
01:12:47All right.
01:12:48So we may have to go ahead and just get you transported over to County.
01:12:50Okay?
01:12:57He confirmed that his brother Jameson is the one that had the gun,
01:13:00and basically told us a story of what happened,
01:13:03and it matches up exactly with the scene and what the victim said happened.
01:13:10So that really helps.
01:13:11It really turns the case from a circumstantial case to a really strong case.
01:13:16All right.
01:13:18Christian, you can stand it up.
01:13:20You are being charged with murder.
01:13:25No, you're not doing it. Christian.
01:13:29How old are you, bro?
01:13:3120, right?
01:13:32Look at me.
01:13:33Look at me.
01:13:34Don't.
01:13:35No, I'm looking at myself.
01:13:36No, you're not.
01:13:37All right.
01:13:38Okay.
01:13:39I'll be suicidal with you.
01:13:40Okay.
01:13:41Well, you had a bull like the head of you.
01:13:44Oh, .
01:13:46Yeah, you do.
01:13:48It's not a life sentence.
01:13:50He's definitely has some remorse.
01:13:52He's said several times, like, he's going to kill himself when he gets to jail,
01:13:57because his life is over.
01:13:59So, like, with that, we'll let the jail know, and he'll be on suicide watch.
01:14:03You could see that he does understand the foolishness, for lack of a better term, of what they did.
01:14:12The next step would be, obviously, get Jameson in custody, and ideally, would get a confession from him as well.
01:14:20Six weeks later, the marshals got him.
01:14:32They zeroed in on the location in Greenville, and they got him.
01:14:36Jameson Bryant, he is the fourth suspect I'd believe to be the shooter.
01:14:40They caught him in Greenville, South Carolina.
01:14:42It's about a three-hour drive away from here.
01:14:44That's a good song.
01:14:49Have a seat.
01:14:51You need some water?
01:14:52Yeah.
01:14:53Have a sweet tea?
01:14:54I don't have a sweet tea.
01:14:56We have a bunch of fries, though.
01:14:57You like french fries?
01:14:58Yeah, take some of them.
01:14:59French fries?
01:15:00All right, some water, please.
01:15:01Appreciate them.
01:15:14You say anything or anything?
01:15:16I mean, I didn't ask him a whole lot, because I didn't want to get going.
01:15:19Yeah.
01:15:20He knows the marshals told him what his charges were, so he knows his murder.
01:15:23And he come out of the cell in Greenville singing and rapping.
01:15:27I told him we were coming back, and he was talking.
01:15:29He was like, okay.
01:15:30All right.
01:15:31Let me go in there.
01:15:32It's pretty cold-hearted.
01:15:33Put the gun in his head.
01:15:34Pulled the trigger and it didn't go off.
01:15:35It jammed.
01:15:36Yeah.
01:15:37Freaking racist.
01:15:38Yeah.
01:15:39Want to talk to you about an incident that happened?
01:15:40Yeah.
01:15:41On the 25th of April?
01:15:42Basically, we know what happened.
01:15:43I'm just trying to get your side of the story.
01:15:44And mainly the question is, were you just there, or did you actually fire any shots?
01:15:57That's all, what I really wanted to know.
01:15:59I've been there at all.
01:16:02See, that's the problem.
01:16:03I'm telling you, you're there.
01:16:05What I want to know is, were you just there?
01:16:12With these guys, and a shot was fired, was it intentional or an accident?
01:16:18What happens when you're in the trailer park?
01:16:29What happens from your point of view?
01:16:31When you say...
01:16:38When you say...
01:16:39When I walk off, I ain't not meeting back out with them boys.
01:16:44When the boys just started running.
01:16:46Who started running?
01:16:48Everybody.
01:16:49The three you're with?
01:16:50Yeah.
01:16:51What are you hearing?
01:16:52Tell me what you, what's going on.
01:16:53I hear somebody start screaming.
01:16:56Did someone in your group start screaming?
01:16:58Uh-uh.
01:16:59Somebody else.
01:17:00I know who.
01:17:01I haven't really fully aware what the **** is going on.
01:17:05Everybody just been in one line when we were running.
01:17:08And then when we hear, all I heard was gunshots.
01:17:11I know where you come from.
01:17:13I know none of us discharged the firearm.
01:17:19None of y'all are discharging the firearm, right?
01:17:21Uh-uh.
01:17:22But these are you, you, right?
01:17:24Right.
01:17:27These are you going in the park, and these are your group running out.
01:17:29Right?
01:17:30Correct?
01:17:31I got you.
01:17:32Look, the next image is your group firing gunshots.
01:17:38I ain't showing you.
01:17:40And the reason being, you've been lying this entire time right now.
01:17:43I'm not going to play this game.
01:17:44This ****, like I heard a scream, someone else is shooting.
01:17:47The camera don't lie.
01:17:48The shots are being fired from your group.
01:17:50Now, I don't know if you're being chased, if it's justified.
01:17:53I don't know anything like that.
01:17:55You can only tell that story.
01:17:59Straight up.
01:18:01Um, I will.
01:18:06Give me an opportunity, to be honest.
01:18:09I know that you were there.
01:18:11I know you were there with this group of guys.
01:18:13I know shots were fired from your group.
01:18:16This is your frickin' life.
01:18:18So this is your chance, and I want you to be honest.
01:18:22Can you do that?
01:18:27I got you.
01:18:28Okay.
01:18:45Okay.
01:18:48I know you come.
01:18:49Trailer park.
01:18:50Yeah.
01:18:53Well, they've been walking.
01:18:54Dumb boy, they're gonna push up on some dudes.
01:18:56What dudes?
01:18:57What dudes, how many dudes?
01:18:59Three dudes.
01:19:00Three dudes, so you push up on three dudes.
01:19:02Then what happens with those three guys?
01:19:04Dumb boy just started talking this .
01:19:06Dumb boy just about taking this .
01:19:08I know.
01:19:09Then that's when somebody lit off like two shots.
01:19:13Not somebody, someone from your group.
01:19:15Yeah, one dumb boy lit off.
01:19:16Which one from your group lit off the two shots?
01:19:18I don't know, you feel me?
01:19:19Because I ain't paying attention.
01:19:22Well, your group is the one that's shooting the shots,
01:19:24correct, not them.
01:19:25I don't know.
01:19:26So straight up.
01:19:29Look, all right, I'm going to be honest with you.
01:19:34The video, you let off the shots.
01:19:37100%, I know that.
01:19:39It's you.
01:19:40That's not a debate.
01:19:41I just want to know, did you intend to hit anybody?
01:19:45No.
01:19:46So was this an accident?
01:19:49So what happened?
01:19:50Why did you fire the shots then?
01:19:56It went off?
01:19:58So it went off one time, two times, how many times, huh?
01:20:01Two times.
01:20:02Two times.
01:20:04So it was an accident when you stumbled and you fired twice.
01:20:09Why'd you fire the other two shots?
01:20:11Yeah, there's two more.
01:20:13I fired four shots total.
01:20:15We had four shellcades.
01:20:17You stumbled and fired twice.
01:20:18Why'd you fire the other two?
01:20:19Please.
01:20:21You know one of your bullets, do you know where it went?
01:20:34It went through a trailer, and there was a Mexican guy
01:20:40sleeping in a bed.
01:20:41It went through his head.
01:20:42Damn.
01:20:46So your bullet killed somebody.
01:20:59Good job.
01:21:01What did you do with the gun?
01:21:06You gave it to a junkie?
01:21:07Yeah, you gave it to about $200 for that .
01:21:13All right, let me step out for a moment.
01:21:14We'll be right back, all right?
01:21:19There you go.
01:21:20Yeah, it went well.
01:21:22I think realizing that it wasn't a debate,
01:21:24that I had a lot of evidence, he knew he had something on him.
01:21:27So he might as well just tell his story.
01:21:29He's the shooter.
01:21:30All four of them were going to rob.
01:21:31These guys, and during the course of the robbery,
01:21:34he fired shots, which ended up killing an innocent person.
01:21:38Those actions led to him being charged with murder
01:21:42and the other three members of the group
01:21:44being charged with murder, instead of just armed robbery.
01:21:46and the other half-sand-tell
01:21:58was the kind of a
01:21:59guy.
01:22:00Yeah.
01:22:00There he was a guy, he was a guy.
01:22:01I've had him.
01:22:03And he's going to be yn as a gig.
01:22:04Alright.
01:22:05It was like, that was the one right.
01:22:07We've been so tired, man.
01:22:08And we're going to be right back.
01:22:09And we're going to burn my teeth,
01:22:10and we're going to get by, we're going to be right back.
01:22:11And we're going to get a big brand.
01:22:11I just play another one, I got to be right back.
01:22:13This was an act that should have never happened.
01:22:40And now one mother has three of her sons in jail for murder,
01:22:45and the other mother has her son gone forever.
01:22:49But I'm thankful that the mother of the suspect
01:22:51stepped forward and did the right thing.
01:22:53That's unique.
01:22:54And I'm thankful.
01:22:56And I know the family must be thankful towards her
01:22:59for stepping up and doing that, even at the cost of her kids.
01:23:10This photo was when he arrived here, to South Carolina.
01:23:17This photo was when he arrived here, to South Carolina.
01:23:24And this photo was when he arrived here, to South Carolina.
01:23:30He loved being an uncle.
01:23:37My kids were never without a candy or a lollipop or something,
01:23:42because Uncle Bocho bought it.
01:23:44He was a great guy.
01:23:45Anything we needed, he was always willing to help.
01:23:49He was always willing to help.
01:23:56He was a great guy.
01:23:58Anything we needed, he was always willing to help.
01:24:04Anything we needed, he was always willing to help.
01:24:07Anything we needed, he was always willing to help.
01:24:09Yes, well, as I was not talking about,
01:24:11I said that he did a lot of help.
01:24:14To the people who met you and now,
01:24:18what can you do?
01:24:20Well, I don't have a word.
01:24:23Do they all day do they put their veil on?
01:24:26Every day.
01:24:29We're sad.
01:24:32The loss of a child.
01:24:36It's not worth it.
01:24:37It's not worth it.
01:24:38A human being a man who was sleeping,
01:24:42was at home, was just sleeping.
01:24:44And that's what I do the most.
01:24:46Because I do not know what to say.
01:24:49I have to feel trapped.
01:24:52I feel completely hurt.
01:24:55Oh, I knew.
01:25:21We always talk about him.
01:25:23Always the good stuff.
01:25:26Keep his memory alive.
