Transcript
00:00What the hell?
00:03Hey, Elena!
00:05Back to you, come on!
00:07Welcome to Ms. Mojo.
00:09And today, we're counting down our picks
00:12for those unforgettable moments
00:13when Chris Farley's unbridled energy,
00:16commitment to character, and sheer comedic genius
00:18proved too much for his fellow cast members to handle,
00:22resulting in visible cracks, giggles,
00:24and outright explosions of laughter.
00:30Number 20, The Chris Farley Show with Jeff Daniels.
00:35The Chris Farley Show sketches were a meta-comedic masterclass
00:39and awkward charm,
00:40showcasing Farley as an intensely nervous,
00:43star-struck interviewer,
00:45a persona so endearing it was surprising
00:47he didn't break guests more often.
00:49This is The Chris Farley Show,
00:50and tonight, my host is Jeff Daniels,
00:54one of the greatest actors around, I guess.
00:59Farley's bumbling questions,
01:01often beginning with, remember when,
01:03and ending with a simplistic observation
01:05about the guest's past work,
01:07were excruciatingly funny, yet oh so clumsy.
01:10His interview with Jeff Daniels perfectly encapsulated this,
01:14as Farley struggles to articulate questions
01:16without fumbling or repeating himself.
01:19Walked down all the broken glass with his bare feet?
01:21Yes.
01:22Mm-hmm.
01:25Did you like that?
01:27Yes.
01:32Yeah, I did too.
01:33That was awesome.
01:34While it doesn't register as strongly
01:36as the other breaks featured on this list,
01:38Daniels is clearly enjoying Farley's childlike adoration.
01:42God, I hate doing this part, man.
01:43I never know what to say.
01:44No, no, you're doing fine, Chris.
01:46You're doing good.
01:47Really?
01:47Yeah.
01:48No, I'm not.
01:50Anyway.
01:51Number 19, Dante.
01:52This is an underrated sketch from season 20.
01:56In it, Farley plays a ruthless fashion designer
01:58who treats everyone around him like their last year's trends.
02:02In this office, you work for me.
02:07But Dante, go away.
02:12Given the combination of callousness and flamboyance he brings to the role,
02:16there are plenty of opportunities for his scene mates to break throughout.
02:19However, everyone manages to just about keep it together,
02:23except, you guessed it, Adam Sandler.
02:25Hey, I got a package here for Dante.
02:28I am Dante.
02:29All right.
02:30From the moment he first enters for his brief appearance,
02:33he can't hide his amusement from his face.
02:35It's probably just as well that we can't see him
02:38after Farley literally kicks him out,
02:40because we imagine he's full-on laughing by then.
02:42I wish you could do me a favor and buzz off.
02:46Oh, man.
02:48There you go.
02:49Here's the chance.
02:51Number 18, Weekend Update.
02:53Chris Farley and David Spade on Spring Break.
02:56Chris Farley and David Spade were both staples on Weekend Update,
03:00but bring them together and you get chaos.
03:02In this bit, the duo discusses their spring break,
03:05and we use the word discuss very loosely.
03:08Honestly, it's surprising everyone holds it together for as long as they do.
03:12And the pirate was like, argh.
03:13Chevy Chase was going, eeeh.
03:15And the priest was like, ah.
03:17And the maitre d' was going, ah.
03:19And the skipper was going, beep.
03:21But after all the haze, haze, grrs, and more,
03:24host Phil Hartman cuts in and questions what on earth they're on about
03:28and tries to encourage them to use real words.
03:31It's from there that the whole thing devolves,
03:33taking any remnants of the human language and Spade's composure with it.
03:37No, you're like, eeeh.
03:39David and Chris, ladies and gentlemen.
03:40David and Chris.
03:44Oh, my God.
03:45I heard it.
03:46Number 17, Chris Farley monologue.
03:49When Chris hosted the show,
03:51he used his monologue to remind everyone
03:53why he'd been such a beloved member of the cast to begin with.
03:56Chris, what are you doing in my dressing room?
03:58The show's already started.
03:59This is your dressing room?
04:01This used to be my dressing room.
04:03In hindsight, there's a lot of sadness to this monologue,
04:06not just because it would be Farley's last appearance,
04:08but also because they'd take a somewhat meta approach to the entire bit.
04:13However, when Farley eventually makes it out on the studio floor,
04:16it doesn't take him long to not only make himself laugh,
04:20but take down his colleagues, too,
04:21when he ironically stumbles over the word responsibility.
04:24Thank you, Chris.
04:26I've really learned some lessons tonight.
04:28You know what I've learned?
04:30I've learned lessons about responsi-
04:31Responsibility.
04:33Responsibility.
04:34Being responsible, not only to myself,
04:37but to the people around me.
04:38That means you guys.
04:39Luckily, he recovers quickly enough to remind us
04:41of some of his SNL highlights.
04:43I'm the new Chris, okay, fellas?
04:46Now, we're going to a great show tonight!
04:49Mighty, mighty Boston's are here!
04:51Don't stop it!
04:53Number 16.
04:54Chris Farley as Norman Schwarzkopf.
04:56Farley's impressions were never about flawless vocal mimicry.
05:00They were about capturing the colossal energy
05:02and defining characteristics of a personality,
05:05then blowing them up to hilarious extremes.
05:08And I'll tell you one more thing.
05:10I want Holyfield!
05:11I want Holyfield!
05:14I showed you what these guns could do.
05:17So naturally, they'd often force a smile from those around him.
05:20His portrayal of General Norman Schwarzkopf was a prime example.
05:25He takes the General's commanding presence,
05:27gruff demeanor, and imposing stature,
05:29all filtered through his unique lens.
05:32Holyfield Schwarzkopf!
05:34It's a war on the shore!
05:37I will wail and prevail!
05:39Farley amplified the impression with his own bombastic physicality,
05:43booming voice, and exaggerated gestures,
05:46creating a larger-than-life caricature
05:48that would be difficult to take seriously.
05:50You can see Dennis Miller's amusement
05:52watching Farley's sheer commitment
05:54to this over-the-top characterization.
05:56General Norman Schwarzkopf, folks.
06:01Need one of those spit shields from the salad bar.
06:04Number 15.
06:05The Hurley He Boy, Dog Sitting Service
06:07Were these sketches essentially designed
06:09to see how long it would take Farley to break Sandler?
06:12The boy knows a dog trick!
06:14I don't teach it!
06:15Do your dog!
06:17I don't know!
06:19It sure feels like that.
06:22Don't get us wrong,
06:22Sandler's dialogue is so goofy
06:24that it feels like it should be enough
06:26to make him go without Farley's help.
06:28However, the constant zooming in and out on Sandler
06:31and his scene partner
06:32really complements the vast energy shifts
06:34between the two characters.
06:36And you know damn well
06:38the dog likes it too!
06:42Just let it happen!
06:44That's all we want, dear!
06:45Just let it happen!
06:47Farley's Mr. O'Malley
06:48feels so strongly about the Hurley He Boy's requests
06:51that it takes Sandler every ounce of his being
06:53not to laugh every single time.
06:56That doesn't mean a smile doesn't slide
06:58through the cracks time and time again.
06:59It's what you want, you know I'll back you.
07:04Good Lord!
07:06Let the boy be your dog!
07:09Number 14.
07:10Cold opening, Matt Foley
07:11We'll see Matt Foley break many people today,
07:14but it's not every day you catch him laughing at himself.
07:17Yo tengo tres centa y cinco años
07:22Yo yo soy tres divorciado
07:27Y yo vivo en van
07:32Circa de un río
07:35If you thought his wild energy was hilarious in English,
07:38just wait until you hear him attempting his usual act in Spanish.
07:42Well, more like Spanglish.
07:44While Farley may be the first to lose it,
07:46he's not the only one,
07:48especially when he brings out the flamenco.
07:50Chachos!
07:51Yo comprendo que estetis peepan tequila?
07:56Woo!
07:57Fu man marijuana!
08:00Y bailan el flamenco!
08:03Que to río!
08:05Farley's knack for unleashing this unhinged energy
08:08makes things super unpredictable for his co-stars,
08:11who must often play off his antics.
08:13The mix of cultures and comedy
08:15leads to plenty of uncontrollable laughter on set,
08:19showing how Farley's talent knew no boundaries.
08:22I'll show you an Americano!
08:24It's awesome!
08:27Bucks a daisy!
08:29Number 13.
08:30Splash Zone
08:31This sketch is total chaos,
08:34and it's Farley at his best.
08:35It takes place at a sea park,
08:37where the space of a seat divides the incredibly lucky from the splash zone.
08:41Ah!
08:42Good lord!
08:44That is a lot of water!
08:46Wow!
08:47God!
08:49I really got doused there!
08:51Farley gets soaked over and over,
08:53while everyone else somehow dodges the worst of it.
08:55He flails, panics,
08:57and ends up completely drenched.
08:59And you can't help but laugh at how committed he is to every ridiculous moment.
09:03Oh my god!
09:04Oh!
09:06Damn it!
09:07That fish really got me!
09:10Son of a bitch!
09:11His co-stars barely keep it together.
09:13And honestly, who could?
09:15We know exactly what's coming,
09:17but that doesn't make it any less funny each time it happens.
09:20You can see that even the extras are finding this absolutely hilarious.
09:24Fishwater was mad enough,
09:26but this is a thousand times worse!
09:28I'm covered in a sticky yellow egg substitute!
09:32Why?
09:33Number 12.
09:34Canteen Boy Goes to a Garage Sale
09:37Canteen Boy was a staple 90s character,
09:40although he's become somewhat controversial now,
09:42but that's a story for another day.
09:44Ow!
09:44Canteen Boy, that's two impressions you can do.
09:47You're good at doing an owl,
09:48and you're good at doing a dork.
09:49In this sketch,
09:50Canteen Boy attends a garage sale,
09:53where he's not exactly treated too kindly by the guy running it all and his friends.
09:57I've already seen what I want,
09:59and it's hanging around your neck.
10:02Oh, seriously, you don't understand.
10:04This is not for sale.
10:05No, no, you don't understand, Canteen Boy.
10:08I want that canteen.
10:09However, it's the moment Farley enters the scene,
10:12you first spot a smirk appear on Sandler's face.
10:15He knows what's coming.
10:16We imagine no matter how many times they rehearsed this moment,
10:19Farley decided to save his best work for this very take.
10:23To be fair, how else do you react when you're forced to endure
10:25such antics on live television?
10:27Wenshee! Wenshee!
10:30Number 11. Matt Foley, a scary story on Halloween.
10:34Yes, it's Matt Foley again.
10:36And this time, he's back with a spooky Halloween tale.
10:40He barely gets started before he has host Christian Slater
10:43trying to hide his face.
10:45And I am a motivational speaker.
10:48Before I begin, I ought to tell you a little about myself
10:52so you'll know where I'm coming from.
10:55It's just as well as some of the laughter is scripted,
10:58as the cast certainly benefited from masking
11:01just some of their amusement at Foley's shenanigans.
11:04Of course, it's Farley's physical comedy
11:06that means the cast can no longer contain themselves,
11:09especially when, once again,
11:12Foley smashes into the table while holding spade.
11:15How about that?
11:16Hey, look at this!
11:18I'm gonna throw some eggs around!
11:20Look at me go in here!
11:23Matt manages to break everything in his path,
11:26from his scene mates to the table and even the window.
11:29What are you looking at?
11:30I've done my job.
11:32If you need me, I'll be extracting glass from my rear end
11:36in a van down by the river!
11:41Number 10. Matt Foley at the gym.
11:44All right, how you guys doing?
11:48Okie dokie, my name,
11:51wrongly you don't know me, is Matt Foley,
11:53and I am a motivational speaker.
11:57When he returned to host SNL,
12:00Chris Farley brought back one of his best sketches.
12:03This premise sees the character giving a pep talk
12:05to an exercise class.
12:06The motivational speaker finds an opportunity
12:09to run wild after grabbing a pot of coffee.
12:11Pouring it all over himself,
12:14the performer receives some hilarious reactions
12:16from the likes of Jim Brewer and Tim Meadows.
12:19Pfft!
12:20Shut your pipe hole, Missy!
12:25All right, look Matt, look Matt,
12:28take it easy!
12:30Look, this is not gonna work out!
12:31Farley even breaks himself up for a second
12:34before playing off of Meadows' trainer.
12:36While it might not be the best version of this skit,
12:39this scene does manage to offer up some more laughs
12:42courtesy of the legend.
12:43However, I've forgotten mine
12:45is kind of a moot point.
12:49Gross!
12:50You cannot be serious.
12:52Number 9.
12:53The Hurley-He-Boy House-Sitting Service
12:55Let me water your plants.
12:58Come on, let the boy water your plants.
13:01In this commercial,
13:02Adam Sandler's character really tries to sell his service.
13:05He pleads with the camera to be a house sitter
13:07while Mr. O'Malley helps out.
13:10The latter role is played by Chris Farley
13:12in a number of asides that only get angrier
13:14with each passing moment.
13:16Mother of God, what is the holdup?
13:19Let the boy sleep in your damn bed!
13:23He said he'd wash the sheets!
13:25Each time that O'Malley takes over,
13:27his counterpart seems to be clenching his jaw shut
13:30so he doesn't laugh.
13:31This all leads to a huge blow-up from Farley,
13:34at which point Sandler struggles to hide his smiles.
13:37I had to see somebody happy,
13:40so just let him move in!
13:42For the love of God,
13:45let the boy move in with you!
13:47Given this setup,
13:49it's amazing that neither performer
13:50falls over laughing at some point.
13:53Number 8, Pepper Boy.
13:55You see that other man right there?
13:57Yeah.
13:58Big, fat, bushy beard.
14:01Big, fat, bushy beard.
14:02He like a three twists of pepper.
14:04Set at a nice restaurant,
14:06this sketch features two waiters eagerly peppering food.
14:10Dana Carvey's character tries to mentor Adam Sandler's staff member
14:14in some choice moments.
14:15This also includes some stellar voices from both performers,
14:20though the surprise star is a guest played by Chris Farley.
14:23After seasoning the man's dish,
14:26Sandler covers his face as he receives an extremely loud response.
14:30Why, thank you, Pepper Boy!
14:33That's the perfect amount of pepper!
14:37Bravo!
14:40Grazie!
14:41The hilarious performance doesn't last long,
14:44but it does leave a massive impression on the scene.
14:47His presence nearly tears a hole in the skit in the best way possible.
14:51With a solid beard and costume,
14:53Farley really knows how to take one line and make it his own.
14:56What do you think is it?
14:58Why, yes!
15:01Number 7.
15:02Gap Girls at the Food Court
15:04In another showcase of 1990s SNL,
15:07some of the best stars of the decade assembled for this sketch.
15:11The performers eat at the food court with an iconic line from Chris Farley.
15:15Lay off me, I'm starving!
15:23Diet starts Monday!
15:24There's also some vocal work from the likes of Adam Sandler that's especially hilarious.
15:30By the time Rob Schneider and Sarah Gilbert's characters show up,
15:34Farley delivers a comeback that's equally funny for being so strange.
15:38When they were passing out brains,
15:40you thought they said trains.
15:43Then you got on it,
15:45and on a train,
15:46and then went for a ride.
15:48This leads Schneider to break as he watches his co-star steal the scene.
15:54While the voices and costumes are great,
15:57it's these kinds of mistakes that bring people back for more.
16:00Really, whatever.
16:02Whatever!
16:04Whatever!
16:06Have fun making minimum wage, girls!
16:09Number 6.
16:10Breaking into the Central Park Zoo polar bear cage
16:13Not every SNL sketch has an amazing script,
16:17but they can still be hugely entertaining.
16:19This skit set at the zoo is a prime example of this concept.
16:23The star-studded lineup decides to take their turn jumping into a polar bear cage.
16:28What happened?
16:29What happened?
16:30Did the bear get him?
16:31I'm not wearing my glasses.
16:32Yeah, the polar bear killed Jay.
16:34As each one gets torn to shreds,
16:37blood splatters all over the survivors,
16:39and the remaining actors start to slowly lose it.
16:43This all leads up to Norm Macdonald and Chris Farley's characters being left,
16:47with both performers ready to break at any moment.
16:50Oh, that's the first guy that went in there.
16:52Are you serious?
16:53You forgot which of our buddies was killed first?
16:55It was Jay Moore, you arse.
16:57Yeah, yeah, but, um,
16:59what's Jay's middle name?
17:01I forget.
17:01The latter's performance causes Macdonald to crack up.
17:05You could call this some kind of train wreck,
17:07but it's definitely an enjoyable one.
17:09Well, you know what?
17:12I'm gonna jump in there because, uh,
17:14I'm sure the bear is full by now.
17:16Number 5.
17:17Chris Farley as Bennett Brower.
17:19That's right, Bennett Brower back with another commentary.
17:23Thought you'd seen the last of old Bennett, perhaps.
17:26While he's a lesser-known character,
17:28Bennett Brower does create this hilarious segment on Weekend Update.
17:32The correspondent makes ample use of air quotes throughout this skit.
17:36At one point, he's supposed to take off with the help of some wires.
17:40Chris Farley breaks character and ad-libs when he realizes there's a problem.
17:44Ready for some improvisation,
17:46the performer turns this mistake into a fantastic moment.
17:50Look at Kevin!
17:51But I'm doing something!
17:52Even host Kevin Nealon has to come to the rescue,
17:57laughing as he has to try to adjust the rigging.
18:00After making his co-star leave his chair,
18:02Farley finally soars through the air in a satisfying ending.
18:06Maybe the cables didn't clear the light, ladies and gentlemen.
18:09Number 4.
18:10Zagat's with Hank and Beverly Gelfand.
18:13Anniversary.
18:14Maybe we can all find a place in our Zagat's New York restaurant guide.
18:19Let's take a look together.
18:21This volatile couple tries to use a guidebook to look for a restaurant.
18:25Throughout the sketch, Hank Gelfand keeps nagging Beverly to stop.
18:30Chris Farley plays his part perfectly as Adam Sandler tries to remain calm.
18:35The former touches the latter's leg, which almost stops the scene.
18:39Their sensual setting will set the mood for any romantic rendezvous.
18:45Oh, you hear that, eh?
18:47After stifling a laugh, Sandler takes the book and rips it up.
18:54He shares a look with his co-star in the heat of the moment that breaks both of them.
18:58Their quick recovery puts them back on script,
19:01but it's still fun to see the skit go off the rails.
19:03Let's find a show to watch in our TV guide.
19:11Just when I thought I was out, she drags me back in.
19:15Number 3.
19:16Adam Sandler, Lunch Lady Land.
19:18This hilarious tribute to the work of Lunch Ladies is great on its own,
19:22but it's the work of Chris Farley that takes it to another level.
19:25Just know everything's doing fine down here in Lunch Lady Land.
19:34Adam Sandler delivers this homage while his co-star dances around in a memorable outfit.
19:39The two start to interact as Farley mouths the words,
19:42with the singer having to keep a straight face during his performance.
19:46Oh, hoagies and grinders, hoagies and grinders.
19:50Navy beans, navy beans, navy beans, navy beans.
19:53Sandler especially looks to be having the time of his life.
19:57They both share a fun moment as they struggle to hold back laughter.
20:01With all the stellar choreography and funny lyrics,
20:04this sketch cracks everyone up in an iconic display.
20:07Sloppy Joe, Slop, Sloppy Joe, well.
20:13Number 2.
20:14Matt Foley, Scaring Kids Straight in Prison.
20:17Let's give it up for my cellmate 3, Matt Foley.
20:23All right, how do you do, DeJoy?
20:28For this variation on the popular sketch,
20:31the motivational speaker finds himself behind bars teaching teens about prison.
20:36Chris Farley's entrance is full of energy and loud enough to get his co-stars on the verge of laughter.
20:41Once the comedian sets his sights on fellow cast member Adam Sandler,
20:45he really kicks it up a notch.
20:47Sandler can barely contain himself as Farley pronounces words like
20:51Purdy in his own special way.
20:53That's pretty funny.
20:55Let me rephrase that.

21:32Number 1. Matt Foley, Van Down by the River
21:37Now as your father probably told you, my name is Matt Foley and I am a motivational speaker.
21:46In the first and most iconic version of this skit,
21:49Chris Farley comes out as the fully formed character Matt Foley.
21:52The motivational speaker gives a talk to two teenagers that quickly breaks down.
21:57Farley's performance might be the peak of physical comedy,
22:00along with one of the best catchphrases in the show's history.
22:04You're using your paper not for writing, but for rolling doobies.
22:10You're gonna be doing a lot of doobie rolling
22:12when you're living in a van down by the river.
22:18Flying off the handle, the performer gets up close and personal with David Spade
22:22and Christina Applegate's characters.
22:24This leads them to hide their laughs behind their hands.
22:27Before the comedian can even fall through the coffee table,
22:31he already had his co-stars breaking down.
22:34There's you there!
22:40Whoops-a-deezy.
22:41Did we forget another time that Farley made people laugh?
