Orange Power — Orange Power 1977 (Austria, Folk, Progressive Rock)
The Austrian rock band Orange Power was founded in 1973 in Vienna, and its early history ended that same year with the release of its debut single, "Fly Away/Carry The Blues," which enjoyed moderate success. However, the band disbanded shortly thereafter, and it was not until 1975 that keyboardist Peter Janda reunited. While he had no trouble finding the right instrumentalists, finding a suitable vocalist proved a much more difficult task. Finally, in 1976, after brief stints with Rudi Nemeczek, Bruno Möbs, and Hannes Neubauber, Gino Pertot, winner of that year's Pop-Odroms song contest, was found. Soon after recording a trial single, "For Stefanie Marrian/Me And Johnnie Prerider," with their new frontman, Orange Power released an album of the same name. However, despite numerous positive reviews in the press, the band again failed to achieve a breakthrough. One of the main reasons for this result and the band's rapid dissolution was the musicians' divided focus. For example, the ardent pragmatist and bandleader Peter Janda preferred to work more in the studio, while the rest of the band members preferred to play live. Perhaps Orange Power's best concert was at Sophiensälen in Berlin, opening for Stanley Clarke. Peter Janda went on to become one of the most sought-after producers on the local music scene, and continued to release instrumental albums under the band's name, which were used as background music on radio and television.
