00:09This looks like a standard,

00:11trustworthy Euronews report

00:13about the fire that tore through a bar

00:15in the Swiss ski resort of

00:17Grand Montana on New Year's Day,

00:19doesn't it?

00:20In reality, though,

00:21it's a manipulated video

00:22that uses a real Euronews report

00:25as a basis to spread misinformation

00:27and wrongly blame Ukrainian refugees

00:29for the blaze,

00:30which officials say killed 40 people.

00:33The fake video has spread

00:34over Russian telegram channels

00:36and has the hallmarks

00:37of being part of a propaganda campaign

00:39designed to discredit Ukrainians

00:41under the guise of legitimate news outlets.

00:44Looking at them side by side,

00:46the real Euronews report

00:47and the fake video

00:48start off in the same way,

00:50talking about the number of casualties

00:52at the Le Constellation Bar,

00:54their ages and nationalities.

00:56But things start to get questionable

00:58when the fake video mentions

01:00that the tragedy could have been the result

01:01of jealousy-driven arson.

01:03It launches an unfounded accusation

01:06against a Ukrainian refugee called Oleg Kay,

01:09who it claims allegedly started the fire

01:11after arguing with his girlfriend the day before

01:14over her involvement with other men.

01:16She supposedly died in the fire.

01:18Oleg Kay worked at Le Constellation

01:20and was familiar with its communication system,

01:22the video says.

01:23But there is absolutely no evidence

01:25for any of these claims

01:27and all of the official announcements

01:29from the Swiss authorities refute them.

01:31The only people currently under investigation

01:33for the fire are the bar's owners,

01:35French couple Jacques and Jessica Moretti,

01:38for suspected manslaughter by negligence,

01:40bodily harm by negligence and arson by negligence.

01:44They deny wrongdoing.

01:46There have been no reports

01:47of Ukrainian involvement

01:49and official numbers say

01:50that there were no Ukrainian casualties

01:52or injuries.
