00:00Ucranian refugees have been wrongly blamed for the Swiss bar fire in a fake video.

00:09This looks like a standard, trustworthy Euronews report about the fire that tore through a bar

00:15in the Swiss ski resort of Kronmontana on New Year's Day, doesn't it?

00:20In reality, though, it's a manipulated video that uses a real Euronews report

00:25as a basis to spread misinformation and wrongly blame Ukrainian refugees for the blaze,

00:31which officials say killed 40 people.

00:33The fake video has spread over Russian Telegram channels

00:36and has the hallmarks of being part of a propaganda campaign

00:40designed to discredit Ukrainians under the guise of legitimate news outlets.

00:44Looking at them side by side, the real Euronews report and the fake video start off in the same way,

00:50talking about the number of casualties at the Le Constellation Bar,

00:54their ages and nationalities.

00:56But things start to get questionable when the fake video mentions

01:00that the tragedy could have been the result of jealousy-driven arson.

01:04It launches an unfounded accusation against a Ukrainian refugee called Oleg Kay,

01:09who it claims allegedly started the fire after arguing with his girlfriend the day before

01:14over her involvement with other men.

01:16She supposedly died in the fire.

01:18Oleg Kay worked at Le Constellation and was familiar with its communication system,

01:23the video says.

01:24But there is absolutely no evidence for any of these claims

01:27and all of the official announcements from the Swiss authorities refute them.

01:32The only people currently under investigation for the fire are the bar's owners,

01:36French couple Jacques and Jessica Moretti,

01:39for suspected manslaughter by negligence, bodily harm by negligence,

01:43and arson by negligence.

01:44They deny wrongdoing.

01:46There have been no reports of Ukrainian involvement

01:49and official numbers say that there were no Ukrainian casualties or injuries.
