00:00Welcome to Match of the Dead.
00:30Happy New Year, four games and a managerial departure to start 2026.
00:56We've been bumped off BBC One for Mrs Brown's boys,
01:00but you'll probably get more laughs out of Dion Dublin and Steph Horton.
01:04Now, Sunderland had a 100% record against Manchester City
01:07at the Stadium of Light on New Year's Day.
01:09It is a niche stat, that, as they've only played once,
01:12but it does allow us to show Micah missing a sitter
01:15just before G-Don Wong went up the other end,
01:19danced round Joe Hart and won it with the very last kick.
01:23Your commentator today, Guy Mogher.
01:26City's 1-0 defeat here in 2012
01:29is the only time they haven't won their first league game of the year
01:33in the last 19 years.
01:36And G-Don Wong, he's still going strong,
01:38now 34 and playing for MacArthur in Australia's A-League.
01:43The Sunderland side shows one change from their 1-1 draw with Leeds four days ago,
01:48with Chris Rigg dropping out for Eliza Mayenda to come in.
01:51It's his first time in the starting line-up since August.
01:55For Manchester City, two differences from their team at Nottingham Forest.
01:58Nathan Ake gets a rare Premier League start, replacing Josko Gwardiol,
02:02and Savino comes in too, with Tijani Rinders making way.
02:09City's record when kicking off a new calendar year.
02:14Mightily impressive, but Sunderland are pretty handy
02:16at the start of January themselves.
02:19They haven't lost their first league game of the year since 2018,
02:24and it's well worth remembering that
02:26they haven't lost here in the Premier League all season.
02:30As Savino tries to deliver for Haaland,
02:33and Hitroda puts it behind for a corner.
02:40City have scored the first goal in 14 of their last 16 Premier League games.
02:44He's usually good for them.
02:55Haaland helps it on, and it's turned in by Bernardo Silva.
02:59The flag has gone up, which will cut short the celebrations,
03:03at least for now.
03:06Gary Bezik, with the flag, felt that he had a clear sight,
03:09and he does look just off.
03:11As always, it's tight, they always are.
03:15Mukherjee with Foden closing.
03:18He takes no chances, he's looking for Brobby,
03:20and there's a race on and a battle on
03:22between Brobby and Ruben Diaz,
03:24and Brobby's won it!
03:25Donnarumma with a great save,
03:27and Ruben Diaz puts it behind for a corner.
03:30He's claiming he was being fouled all the way there.
03:32Not seen that way.
03:34I think there's a bit of holding going on
03:35on both sides, and Brobby was just too strong.
03:39He wasn't giving that up.
03:40It's Mayenda who's going to get there
03:47and go shoulder to shoulder with Mateus Nunes.
03:50Now it's a ding-rah, trying to check back.
03:53Hume arrives, but Hume can't keep the effort down.
03:56And Sunderland are getting joy down the sides.
04:02Getting joy when they go over the top direct.
04:06So first Brobby and then Mayenda,
04:08just too strong for whoever was up against them.
04:11Harlow's lost out to Muchiele,
04:17but he goes back in to win the ball.
04:20There are little duels developing all over the field.
04:24It's a great watch.
04:26Everybody's up for this,
04:27in red and white, in blue,
04:29and right around the stadium as well.
04:30And played out by Nico O'Reilly
04:37to a tumultuous cheer.
04:43Might still be goalless,
04:44but proof so far that there is
04:46very much such a thing as an entertaining 0-0.
04:51Cherky finds Mateus Nunes.
04:54Foden across!
04:55Harland's shot saved.
04:57First chance he's had.
04:59Straight at Robin Roos.
05:00Le Fay.
05:06Mayenda sways out of the way.
05:09Petrauda's on a storming run upfield.
05:11This is Mayenda.
05:13And Ruben Diaz takes it out of the gloves of Donnarumma.
05:16Donnarumma happy with his contribution anyway.
05:21Thanked him for it.
05:22It's the other goalkeeper
05:23who's just been forced into a save.
05:25He back it from there.
05:27Pretty much 99 times out of 100.
05:28Didn't take long for Sunderland to get down the other end.
05:36If nothing particularly happens
05:38in the rest of the first half,
05:40then Sunderland will have achieved
05:42the honour of restricting City
05:44to the fewest first-half shots
05:46that they've managed in any game all season
05:47in the Premier League.
05:49Le Fay.
05:50A ding-ra.
05:51Now it's Granit Xhaka.
05:53Xhaka swings it in,
05:54and it's just over the bar.
05:55Trae Hulme in there for Sunderland.
06:00He had a shot earlier,
06:01he couldn't keep down.
06:03Similar story with that header.
06:05Sunderland 28 points on the board.
06:09When you think when they were last
06:10in the Premier League in 2016-17,
06:13they only got 24 in the whole season.
06:17Spada-Silva finding Rodri.
06:20Through to Foden.
06:21Now Cherki.
06:23Savinho getting into the box first.
06:25It is Savinho!
06:26Well, that looked like a golden opportunity.
06:30Foden to Cherki.
06:33Savinho's intention was clear.
06:35And he gets in front of Hitrauda,
06:37and you think, well,
06:38he's just got to get anything on that
06:40and City are in front.
06:41He got too much on it.
06:46Rodri.
06:48Back into marshal things
06:50in the middle of the field.
06:52Here's Foden.
06:53Foden to Savinho.
06:55And Savinho might have another chance
06:57to score.
06:57Saved by Rufs,
06:58and Haaland can't put the follow-up in.
07:01He was under pressure from Alderete.
07:03Robin Rufs called into action.
07:05And Sunderland now
07:06are being asked serious questions of...
07:15Serkin, strong running.
07:19A ding-ra.
07:20Le Fay.
07:22Le Fay into Mayenda.
07:25Mayenda holds off Ake.
07:27Tarried by Donnarumma.
07:28It was belted his way by a ding-ra.
07:31The pace and ferocity of the game
07:33is just as unrelenting now
07:36as it was in the first minute.
07:44Le Fay.
07:45Through to Mayenda.
07:48Through to Mayenda.
07:49Mayenda saved by Donnarumma.
07:51Really good reactions.
07:54Down so sharp.
07:57Sunderland are getting better
07:58and the stadium of light
08:00is getting louder.
08:02Tell me you've seen a better nil-nil
08:04than this all season.
08:05I won't believe you.
08:05It's a city throw.
08:12It's a city throw.
08:12Rodri takes it.
08:14Foden.
08:15Accusations that that was a foul throw
08:17as he slammed it down to the feet of Phil Foden.
08:20Rodri.
08:22Guardiola saved by Rufs.
08:25Brilliant save.
08:27Super chance.
08:29Guardiola drifting into the box.
08:31He got behind Trey Hulme.
08:34Sunderland feel that Hulme was pulled to the floor.
08:37Guardiola claims that he was being fouled along the way.
08:41Shrugged him off to test Rufs anyway.
08:44Rufs ready.
08:45Mateus Nunes.
08:51Bernardo Silva.
08:54Rodri.
08:56Ake.
08:58Manchester City now.
09:01Seem as though they're getting closer
09:02to finding the gaps.
09:04It's Dokku.
09:06Hulme forced the back away.
09:08Dokku going all the way.
09:10Straight against Muchieli
09:11and then Alderete heads it over.
09:12An heroic block from Norti Muchieli.
09:18Not that he'll have known much about it.
09:20He couldn't get out of the way.
09:22But if Manchester City are going to get the breakthrough
09:24it seems almost certain
09:27that it'll be something to do with Jeremy Dokku.
09:30Cherki.
09:34Dokku waits for it
09:35and holds off Mayenda
09:37who's holding on to him
09:38for dear life.
09:41Cherki.
09:43Rodri.
09:49Mateus Nunes.
09:53Guardiola who goes for it
09:54and it's off the post.
09:55Absolutely intent
09:58on getting something on it
09:59in front of Alderete.
10:02Look how close it was
10:03to spinning in.
10:07Rodri.
10:12That's Isidore.
10:15Cherki.
10:16There are four in the box.
10:17Cherki towards Haaland.
10:19Here's Guardiola.
10:19And Sunderland get another one away.
10:23It's Muchieli.
10:26That's with
10:26every single City sort
10:28into the Sunderland penalty area.
10:31There were so many
10:32red and white striped shirts
10:33instantly on the scene.
10:41Sunderland once more
10:41underlining that
10:42it's no fluke
10:43that they're up in 7th place
10:44in the Premier League.
10:45Guardiola's throw.
10:49This is Cherki.
10:51And this now is Rinders.
10:54And he didn't really
10:55get a hold of it.
10:58Nice and easy
10:59for Robin Roos.
11:02We're past 94 minutes.
11:05It is full time
11:06at the Stadium of Life.
11:08The players will leave the field
11:10to the sound of
11:11red and white delight.
11:13Gigi Donnarumma
11:14is a little bit
11:14too fired up
11:15and angered
11:16by something
11:16at the end.
11:18And Pep Guardiola
11:19is out to
11:20maybe play the role
11:22of peacemaker
11:23as well here.
11:24It's finished
11:25Sunderland nil.
11:26Manchester City nil.
11:28And I challenge anybody
11:29to see a better
11:29goalless draw
11:30anywhere
11:31all season long.
11:35Well Pep,
11:36I don't know about you
11:36I didn't want that game
11:37to end.
11:38It was so good to watch.
11:39What's your take
11:40from it from a City
11:41point of view?
11:41Yeah, we can play
11:42120 minutes
11:43and after in two days
11:44we play against Chelsea
11:45120 more.
11:46For you it's really,
11:47really good.
11:47Congratulations.
11:48You can say to the
11:49new rules for the referees
11:51that they like to do.
11:52But it was nice.
11:53It was four minutes
11:53so
11:53just in case
11:57at the end
11:58we can score
11:58another one goal.
12:01It's a tough place
12:02to come
12:02but the amount
12:05of chances
12:06we missed
12:06in the six-year box
12:08so not
12:09in a difficult
12:09one.
12:10A six-year box
12:10we could not convert
12:11and the first half
12:13was more equal
12:13high.
12:14We didn't do
12:15what we talk
12:16about our build-up
12:17but in general
12:20it was a really,
12:21really good game.
12:22Where does this belief
12:23come from
12:23and it just keeps
12:24on growing?
12:25Yeah,
12:26it's a question
12:26of experience
12:27and I think
12:29the standards
12:30in our team
12:31are high.
12:32They want to
12:33get better
12:35so I think
12:36it's important
12:36because
12:36if you
12:38stay just
12:40at the same level
12:41the league
12:42is going so fast
12:43that you will be
12:44punished at the moment
12:45so it wasn't the case.
12:46They are still ambitious
12:47and I hope
12:48it will be the case
12:49for the next month.
12:51Well,
12:52Sunderland's
12:53home record
12:53is very impressive
12:54this season.
12:55They're still unbeaten
12:56only Arsenal
12:57also have an unbeaten
12:59Premier League
13:00home record
13:01and Sunderland
13:02have already played
13:03the top three
13:04City, Arsenal
13:05and Villa
13:06at home
13:06and tonight
13:07they defended
13:08for their lives
13:09didn't they?
13:09They really did.
13:10I think that was
13:11the story of the game
13:12Sunderland defending
13:13missing Dan Ballard
13:14missing players
13:15from AFCON
13:15and I think
13:17Mukeleli
13:17and Aldrete
13:18were exceptional
13:19tonight in terms
13:20of the positional sense
13:21being able to
13:22clear the ball
13:22and doing what
13:23needs doing
13:23in them moments
13:24and not being
13:25afraid to go
13:26against Haaland
13:27in them 1v1
13:27situations
13:28we know how
13:29impressive he is
13:30being able to
13:31physically outmuscle
13:32him, win the ball
13:33back and Sunderland
13:34to start them
13:34attacks again
13:35here again
13:361v1 against Haaland
13:37not many centre-halves
13:38can do what
13:39Mukeleli did
13:39tonight
13:40and even in this
13:41and even in this
13:41instance when players
13:42are out of position
13:43there's Trae Hulme
13:44filling in for
13:45Aldrete who's out
13:46of there
13:46Docku gets past
13:48his man
13:48but there's Trae Hulme
13:49clearing his lines
13:50again and this was
13:51the story throughout
13:52the whole night
13:52that made it really
13:53frustrating for
13:54Manchester City
13:54and Aldrete
13:56putting his body
13:57on the line
13:57blocking balls
13:58City started to get
14:00really frustrated
14:01and in the second
14:02half Docku was
14:03probably a key
14:04player for City
14:04and trying to
14:05create chances
14:06but yet again
14:07Sunderland standing
14:08strong
14:08being physical
14:09being in the right
14:10positions
14:11putting their bodies
14:11on the line
14:12and that's what
14:12Sunderland fans love
14:13is that ability
14:14to show that
14:15little bit of
14:15passion
14:16and to try and
14:17keep that clean sheet
14:18and that's what's
14:18been so impressive
14:19this season
14:20especially at the
14:21stadium
14:21like that
14:21teams have found
14:22it really tough
14:23and this probably
14:24sums up Mikulele's
14:25performance here
14:26is just the ability
14:27to put players
14:29bodies on the line
14:29and also to get
14:30a well earned
14:31point for Sunderland
14:32tonight
14:32and as a Sunderland
14:33fan and a former
14:34Manchester City
14:35player is that
14:36the easiest result
14:38to talk about
14:38is that the easiest
14:39result to talk about
14:40on the show
14:41yeah I think so
14:41for tonight
14:42and look
14:43as well as
14:44your outfield
14:45players performing
14:46as Sunderland did
14:47you still need
14:48your goalkeeper
14:48from time to time
14:49and you probably
14:50need the opposition
14:51certainly when
14:52they're Manchester
14:52City to be what
14:53wasteful would you
14:54say
14:55yeah you know
14:56if you judge them
14:57by their own
14:58standards you would
14:58expect them to
14:59you know they did
15:00create their chances
15:01you know when there
15:01wasn't a red and
15:02white shirt flying at
15:03them and blocking
15:04they did create some
15:05decent chances
15:06Harlan got a chance
15:08as well Savino here
15:09breaking they got to
15:09get in there but
15:10you know on this
15:11occasion he gets
15:12out and he's
15:12leaning back
15:13so they had their
15:14chances you know
15:15as much as I'm going
15:16to give City credit
15:17for all these chances
15:18that they did create
15:19they didn't score
15:20because the keeper
15:21was on form
15:22tonight
15:22Robin Moose was
15:23outstanding
15:24stood firm
15:25behind his back
15:26four behind his
15:27back five
15:27this one here as
15:29well that's just a
15:29reaction save
15:30and as a back four
15:31if you've got a
15:32keeper that you
15:33know can get
15:34you out the mess
15:35with great saves
15:36like that when
15:36you're not quite in
15:37the position
15:37that's what you
15:38need
15:39it's great for
15:39confidence
15:40that's really
15:40unlucky
15:41from Guardiol
15:42there on the
15:42near post
15:43very sort of
15:43acrobatic
15:44but I've got to
15:46give credit to
15:46Sunderland
15:46they're at home
15:48and what we say
15:49about teams that
15:49come up
15:50make sure your
15:51home form's good
15:51and it is
15:52as far as City
15:53are concerned
15:54their XG was
15:55over two
15:55the highest figure
15:56in a Premier League
15:57game in which
15:57they haven't scored
15:58since 2022
16:00do you look at it
16:02as a missed
16:03opportunity for them
16:04or are you of the
16:05opinion if you get
16:06a point at Sunderland
16:07this season that's
16:08going to be a good
16:08point
16:09I think if we look
16:09at Sunderland's
16:10home record I think
16:11it's a point well
16:12earned and I think
16:13City will overall be
16:14disappointed because of
16:15the chances that
16:15they created but you
16:16look at the likes of
16:17Arsenal, Aston Villa
16:18who we've mentioned
16:18and to go there
16:19and get a point
16:20and we're halfway
16:21point of the season
16:21there's a long
16:22long way to go
16:23City play Chelsea
16:25on Sunday
16:27which is a huge
16:28game as Pep Guardiola
16:29mentioned there
16:30and we will talk
16:31about what's been
16:32going on at Chelsea
16:33today a little
16:34later on the show
16:36now Fulham had won
16:38three in a row
16:39their best run
16:40of 2025
16:41Crystal Palace
16:42had lost three in a row
16:43their worst run
16:44of 2025
16:45Mark Scott
16:46was at Selhurst Park
16:47Contrasting fortunes
16:49for the clubs
16:50since Palace's win
16:51at Fulham last month
16:53Oliver Glasner's side
16:54coming into the
16:55return fixture
16:56without a win in five
16:58which is their
16:59joint worst run
17:00under him
17:00while another
17:01Fulham victory
17:02would equal their
17:03Premier League
17:04club record streak
17:05of four in a row
17:06both sides are
17:08unchanged
17:08although already
17:09stretched Palace
17:10have lost the
17:11services of another
17:12player with Eddie
17:13Nketiah out injured
17:14Harry Wilson's
17:16Humdinger in last
17:17month's loss to the
17:18Eagles is one of
17:19seven goals in his
17:20last 11 games
17:21for club and country
17:23here's Gay
17:26going direct
17:30it's intercepted
17:31by Koenka
17:32now it's Smith-Rowe
17:33good carry by
17:37Smith-Rowe
17:37now offloads
17:38to Kevin
17:39Kevin got a bit
17:41lucky with the bounce
17:41the ball in for
17:43Smith-Rowe
17:43Wilson
17:44beaten away by
17:46Henderson
17:46Jimenez
17:47a collection of
17:49chances for Fulham
17:50there
17:50all started by
17:52Emil Smith-Rowe
17:54advancing forwards
17:55at pace
17:56Kevin got a bit
17:57fortunate initially
17:58here as the rebound
18:00came his way
18:00ball was into a good
18:02area
18:02and then on the
18:04follow-up
18:04Raul Jimenez
18:05sends it wide
18:07Oliver Glasner's
18:10new year resolution
18:10is going to be
18:11trying to see his
18:13team tighten up
18:14defending set pieces
18:15and put away more
18:17of the chances that
18:17they create
18:18Pino
18:21Mitchell
18:23a bit of pinball
18:25and then
18:26Gaye can't slip
18:27it in
18:27Hughes
18:29and there it goes
18:31first bit of
18:32positive palace play
18:34that we've seen
18:34benefited from some
18:36slack defending
18:37when the cross came in
18:38but Mark Gaye
18:39couldn't take full
18:40advantage
18:41only the current
18:43top three have won
18:44more points
18:45across the last
18:46nine Premier League
18:47games than
18:47Marco Silva's men
18:49Robinson
18:50Smith-Rowe
18:51set it up here
18:54for Lukic to have
18:55a pop
18:55Gaye got his
18:57body in the way
18:58Mitchell's clearance
18:59is straight to
18:59Tete
19:00who didn't clear
19:02the crossbar
19:03by much
19:04the initial hit
19:05from Lukic
19:06charged down by
19:06Gaye
19:07not a great header
19:08from Mitchell
19:08a very good try
19:10though
19:10from Kenny
19:11Tete
19:11and had Henderson
19:13concerned
19:14not a bit of
19:17classic so far
19:18Lerma
19:23play has been
19:31stopped here
19:32because Justin
19:34Deveni
19:34had a coming
19:36together with
19:36Jorge Cuenca
19:37it's a flailing
19:40arm from
19:41Justin Deveni
19:42but there's
19:42nothing in it
19:44despite Jorge
19:45Cuenca's appeals
19:46to the contrary
19:47look what
19:56Lerma
19:57here's Klein
20:01got away from
20:03Robinson
20:03Klein into the
20:05area
20:05Macheta
20:06Boy did he
20:12need that
20:12and so did
20:15Crystal Palace
20:16too weak here
20:19from Anthony
20:20Robinson
20:20Klein away
20:22from him
20:22and then it's
20:23an excellent
20:24delivery
20:24Jean-Philippe
20:26Meteta
20:27made sure
20:28it got the
20:29treatment
20:29it deserved
20:30and in a
20:32tight game

20:43Mateta
20:43Klein's
20:45getting there
20:46first
20:46and Klein
20:47but it would
20:49have been
20:49quite something
20:50if he'd
20:51found the

27:35is going
27:35to be
27:35this time
27:36he secures
27:37the ball
27:37unfortunately
27:38he secures
27:39it
27:39and then
27:40he's not
27:40where he
27:41should be
27:41in the middle
27:42of the
27:42goal to
27:43be heading
27:43that goal
27:44but it
27:45happened
27:45time after
27:45time
27:46you can
27:46see
27:47Jimenez
27:47in a
27:48goal scoring
27:48position
27:49and what
27:49they don't
27:50do is
27:50they don't
27:50refuse to
27:51cross it
27:52weak chances
27:53these are
27:53but it
27:54just shows
27:54that's what
27:56they're
27:56targeting
27:56they forced
27:58Palace players
27:59and Palace
28:00defenders
28:03like
28:04this
28:04Kearney
28:05comes off
28:05the bench
28:06gets himself
28:07a goal
28:07I think
28:08Marco Silva's
28:09subs
28:09today were
28:10outstanding
28:11Castagne
28:11comes on
28:12as well
28:12gets himself
28:13into a
28:14forward thinking
28:15goal scoring
28:15position
28:16I think
28:17that's a
28:17poor finish
28:17I'm thinking
28:18put that
28:19in the back
28:20of the net
28:20are you also
28:21thinking partly
28:22that's a good
28:22save
28:23no
28:23I'm thinking
28:24it's a really
28:24really poor
28:25finish
28:25that was a
28:26worse finish
28:27that was an
28:27even worse
28:28but it's just
28:29that's what
28:30they created
28:31from the left
28:32hand side
28:32with
28:33Robinson
28:33and Kevin
28:34absolutely
28:35outstanding
28:35down there
28:36Oliver Glass
28:37is saying
28:37it's not
28:38gone through
28:38yet
28:39when they do
28:41announce it
28:41do you think
28:42that's a smart
28:43signing
28:43yeah I think
28:44it potentially
28:45could be
28:45I think
28:45at this
28:46moment
28:46time
28:46Palace
28:47have had
28:47a lot
28:47of games
28:48over a
28:48short period
28:48of time
28:49the lack
28:49in bodies
28:50and
28:50Brennan
28:51Johnson
28:51with his
28:51experience
28:52and I
28:52think
28:52with the
28:53World Cup
28:53round the
28:54corner
28:54I think
28:54his focus
28:55will
28:55to be
28:55play
28:55more
28:55games
28:56he's
28:56not
28:56really
28:56featured
28:57that much
28:57for Spurs
28:58and he
28:59scores
28:59big goals
29:00and big
29:03is that
29:03help for
29:04Mateta
29:04up front
29:05and in
29:05them
29:05goal scoring
29:06departments
29:06I think
29:0718 goals
29:07last season
29:08as well
29:08which will
29:09help
29:09Palace
29:10if it
29:10goes ahead
29:11and I
29:12played with
29:12his dad
29:12that's how
29:13old I am
29:14I played
29:15with his dad
29:15at Manchester
29:16United
29:16and I'm
29:17pretty sure
29:17Davey's
29:17going to be
29:18saying
29:18listen son
29:18get yourself
29:19some games
29:20get yourself
29:20some games
29:21in a World Cup
29:21year
29:22as Steph
29:23says
29:23right
29:24Liverpool
29:24and Leeds
29:25shared the
29:26points in a
29:26six goal thriller
29:27at Ellen Road
29:28three weeks ago
29:29Martin Fisher
29:30was at Anfield
29:30for the rematch
29:31we'll be very
29:35lucky to see a
29:35game that matches
29:36that one for
29:37thrills and
29:37spills but
29:38this is a
29:39fixture that
29:39has boasted
29:40loads of
29:41goals in
29:41recent years
29:4234 scored
29:43in the last
29:44seven meetings
29:45three changes
29:46for Liverpool
29:47Sir Bosley

29:49Robertson

29:51and Chiesa
29:52who are all
29:53on the
29:53bench
29:53no Dominic
29:55Calvert-Lewin
29:55from the start
29:56for Leeds

29:57four alterations
29:59Metja

30:28Jones
30:28Eketike
30:29did brilliantly
30:33to step
30:33inside
30:34the defender
30:34and Leeds
30:35making a real
30:36meal
30:36of getting
30:37this one
30:37clear
30:37fabulous work
30:39this
30:39from

30:43and then
30:45embarrassing
30:45Gudmundsson
30:46no real power
30:48in the shot

30:50of difficulty

31:31Wietz
31:31might have
31:31scored
31:32a second
31:33goal in
31:34quick succession
31:34at Anfield
31:35having
31:35finally
31:36broken his
31:37duck
31:37at the
31:38weekend
31:38against
31:38Wolves
31:39and
31:41Alisson
31:41and that's a bit
31:46casual
31:46the first
31:47timer
31:48was on target
31:49from Ampadu
31:50but not hit
31:52with enough
31:52pace
31:52this was almost
31:55a hugely
31:55embarrassing
31:56moment
31:56for Liverpool's
31:57goalkeeper
31:58well he's such a precious commodity
32:03Dominic Calvert-Lewin
32:05and with games coming thick and fast
32:06Daniel Farker
32:08believing that he's
32:09got to be careful
32:10not to overuse him
32:12just now
32:13I'm sure he'll be
32:14utilised at some stage tonight
32:16Munson couldn't sneak it through
32:20towards stack
32:21and Liverpool can come again
32:22with Canate
32:23Robertson's delivery
32:25but Munson was trying to
32:27head that clear
32:28failed
32:30Frimpong collects
32:31and Eketike
32:33heads it back
32:34from where it came
32:35there's a buzz around
32:38Anfield at the moment
32:39as people discuss
32:40exactly what happened
32:41then
32:41with real venom
32:43Eketike just trying to
32:45get his head on it
32:46and force it goalwards
32:47sends it straight back
32:49to where it came from
32:49there's never been
32:52a goalless draw
32:53between these sides
32:54at Anfield in the Premier League
32:56this time it finished
32:580-0 here
32:58was back in April 1992
33:01in the old
33:02first division
33:04Eketike
33:05might have to do it
33:07himself here
33:07and never got past

33:28real save
33:28he's made tonight
33:29and handball
33:29against Ampadu
33:30and the Leeds
33:33captain booked
33:34and that will mean
33:35that he will miss
33:36Leeds United's
33:37next game
33:38at home to
33:39Manchester United
33:39on Sunday
33:40lunchtime
33:41easy stop
33:43for Lucas Perry
33:44to make
33:44Kierkech
33:50that's awkward
33:54and it brings
33:56Liverpool a corner
33:57Leeds have two
34:01substitutions ready
34:02but they will wait
34:03and see what happens
34:05with this corner kick
34:05before making them
34:07catch up
34:11for Leeds
34:11head
34:11it's another
34:12corner
34:12Van Dijk
34:18is there
34:19and it's wide
34:21quite possibly
34:24the clearest
34:25opportunity
34:25that either
34:26team
34:26have fashioned
34:27all night
34:27Gakpo
34:30Gakpo
34:30still there
34:35TK on the edge
34:37lining up
34:40the shots
34:40well it was
34:43worth a hit
34:44but
34:46well wide
34:47of target
34:48in the end
34:48Okafor
34:55stopped
34:56by Frimpong
34:56they'll take
35:02their time
35:03and
35:05get themselves
35:06ready for another
35:07long throw
35:08here
35:08Leeds United
35:09can they win
35:12the first
35:12ball in the air
35:13appeals for
35:17handball
35:17there by the
35:18Leeds fans
35:18Villar will
35:19check
35:19in the meantime
35:21Sir Bozlai
35:22has failed
35:23to get it away
35:24swung in
35:24by Gudmundsson
35:25and it's
35:26Calder
35:26Lewin
35:27unbelievable
35:28he's done it
35:28again
35:29but the flag
35:29is up
35:29it won't
35:30count
35:30well the flag
35:33was up
35:34ever so
35:34swiftly
35:34there
35:35dangerous ball
35:37in
35:37Bornau
35:37with the
35:38flick
35:38there
35:38and you
35:38can see
35:39that
35:39Calvert
35:39Lewin
35:39is just
35:40ahead
35:41of Virgil
35:42van Dijk
35:43but for a
35:44split second
35:44there was joy
35:45for him
35:46and the
35:46Leeds
35:46contingent
35:47at that
35:47end of
35:48the ground
35:48out of time
35:50at the end
35:51of out of time
35:51got to get it
35:53in Liverpool
35:54Eketike
35:55he's found
35:58an angle
35:58for a cross
35:59but he's
36:00also found
36:01the boos
36:02of Beal
36:03one or two
36:04well more than
36:05one or two
36:05boos
36:05echoing around
36:06Anfield
36:06after that
36:07Liverpool
36:08very very
36:09ordinary
36:10but full marks
36:11to Leeds United
36:12who continue
36:13this excellent
36:14run they're on
36:15six games
36:16unbeaten
36:17tonight
36:17and but
36:18for an offside
36:19flag
36:19they might
36:20have nicked
36:20it right at
36:21the end
36:21through Dominic
36:22Calvert-Lewin
36:23rock-solid
36:24against the
36:25ball
36:25it's always
36:25important
36:26to be
36:26like this
36:27as a
36:28promoted
36:28side
36:28and
36:29last
36:29clean
36:29sheet
36:29was
36:30a while
36:30ago
36:30although
36:31we had
36:31many good
36:31results
36:32and scored
36:32many many
36:32goals
36:33but we want
36:33to return
36:34back to
36:34this
36:34behaviour
36:34and we
36:36did
36:36today
36:37and for
36:37that
36:37this is
36:38the most
36:39pleasant
36:39aspect
36:40of this
36:40game
36:40What needs
36:42to happen
36:42to break
36:43through
36:43a low
36:44block
36:44that was
36:44so well
36:45regimented
36:45tonight
36:46by Leeds
36:46I think
36:47everyone
36:47knows
36:48if you
36:49look at
36:50football
36:50and especially
36:50in the
36:51Premier League
36:51you see
36:53unlocking it
36:53it's a lot
36:54of times
36:55an individual
36:56action
36:56which we
36:57saw today
36:57a few
36:57times
36:58Jeremy
36:58Frimpong
36:58doing
36:59or
36:59as we
37:01see
37:01a lot
37:02in the
37:02Premier League
37:02a set piece
37:03can unlock
37:04a low
37:05block
37:05we were
37:07close
37:07with one
37:08set piece
37:08with Virgil
37:08Just impressive
37:09what they
37:10have delivered
37:11and also
37:11sign of
37:12our spirit
37:13and our
37:13togetherness
37:14and how
37:14much we
37:14need
37:14each
37:15and every
37:15player
37:15and
37:16for that
37:17definitely
37:17also a
37:17great
37:18day
37:18for the
37:18spirit
37:19and
37:19togetherness
37:20in the
37:20group
37:20and
37:20let's
37:21can be
37:21really
37:21proud of
37:22themselves
37:23a big
37:23shout
37:23there
37:23for
37:23a
37:23possible
37:24penalty
37:24and
37:24there
37:25is
37:25a
37:26thought
37:26process
37:26that
37:26goes
37:27along
37:27the
37:27lines
37:27of
37:27that
37:27had
37:28he
37:28gone
37:28down
37:28he
40:23played Chelsea, they've played Liverpool twice, they've gone to the Stadium of Light and got
40:28a point there, they've demolished Crystal Palace, you know Danny Murphy said Steph on
40:33Sunday's match that he deserves so much credit because before Chelsea you were wondering
40:38whether he was managing from a game to game basis. Yeah they've definitely turned a corner
40:43I think it's not just by luck, this is with very good coaching, there's a lot of organisation,
40:47the players when they come off the pitch, they've come off the bench, they know exactly
40:51what they're doing and I'm really pleased for him because he's come under so much scrutiny
40:54when Leeds get promoted and these last six games are more what we would like from a Leeds team
40:59especially at home at Ellen Elrod. What would you have liked from Eketike in this situation?
41:07I don't know, he very rarely gets it wrong but I'm thinking to myself, I'm going for goal,
41:16I'm not going down. Right. Because I think his natural instinct is I can score here, I've got the
41:23defender on the right side, I'm still at my side. You'd have stayed up? Yes. I'd attempted to stay up and I would have stayed up and I would have hoped to, I would have scored.
41:31I thought Arna Slott's comment was great there. Yeah I did. I thought he was really good at it. He answered the question.
41:36He answered the question then he said, no actually I don't want him to change or us to change, I want other teams who maybe go down easily to change.
41:45I think what Dion said in terms of he's on the other side of the defender so I think that's what gives him a bit of hope to get his shot away but yeah,
41:51I think I like what Arna Slott says and I like to see that more in the game as everybody trying to make that effort to finish their chances.
41:57He talks about trying to beat a low block who either need a bit of individual brilliance or a set piece. Do you think Liverpool should be more than that?
42:06Do you want to see better patterns of play from that? I think that's a general rule of thumb really. Yeah that's what he was eluding to.
42:13Yeah and I think that's basically, or a mistake, you know, that could be the other one you could throw in there. I don't think there's anything special that's got to break down a low block.
42:20OK, right, edge of your seat time. Thomas Frank returned to Brentford for the first time since taking charge of Spurs. Steve Wilson was at this one.
42:31When Thomas Frank made his move from south-west to north-east London, both of these clubs were ringing out the old and ringing in the new.
42:40Who has benefited the most is a matter for debate. Spurs have two more points with Frank than they did at this stage of last season,
42:48while Brentford have two more points now without him.
42:52Keith Andrews, Brentford Vintage are unbeaten since the reverse fixture last month, most recently hammering Bournemouth.
42:59Only one change for them, Henderson in for Jenson.
43:02Three Tottenham changes, João Pallinha for the injured Bergwahl, Odebert for Colin Mouane and Christian Romero back from a ban in for Danso.
43:11Brennan Johnson seems to be on the cusp of joining Crystal Palace.
43:18Never really got the chance to bid farewell to the Brentford fans, Thomas Frank.
43:24He'll be happy to have got the opportunity to do that prior to this game.
43:29Spent nine years at the club.
43:31Initially as Dean Smith's assistant.
43:35Coyote with the throw.
43:37And is that going to be a playoff hand event?
43:40It has, it's a corner.
43:42Well, Brentford used the long throw well, and that was an absolute ripper from Coyote.
43:49Vitaly Janelt is going to take this.
43:52And it's...
43:53It's gone in, Chard is there!
43:55Vicario, and the flag's gone up, it's not going to count.
44:01Vicario safe from Collins.
44:03Chard have put it in the roof of the net.
44:07But I think you will see that he is very much in an offside position.
44:11And half an hour played, and it's been the greatest half hour of football you've ever seen.
44:22Giaupalina away to Pedro Porro.
44:26Three in the box for Spurs.
44:30Arrowed in well.
44:31Ayo got something on it.
44:32Richarlison took it on the volley.
44:34And it's back to Richarlison and wide.
44:37Well, both Richarlison and Archie Gray had opportunities to put this in the net.
44:43Really good ball in, actually.
44:47Richarlison back across to Gray, who's a little bit unlucky that his header hit Collins.
45:00And Van de Ven.
45:02With a missed kick.
45:04Brentford get a throw.
45:07Coyote can probably get it somewhere near the penalty spot from there.
45:12He's going to give it a go.
45:15Covered out by Van de Ven.
45:17And wildly off target by Yarmouk.
45:21May not surprise many to learn that he's never scored for Brentford.
45:27The game is doing absolutely nothing to dispel the stinning numbness of everybody's fingers on a cold night.
45:34Lewis Potter.
45:42That's a lovely ball for Sharder.
45:44Sharder!
45:45And taken away.
45:47But here's Henderson.
45:48And Igor Thiago, if he'd left that, maybe it would have fallen nicely for Lewis Potter.
45:56Well, certainly an opportunity this.
45:58There haven't been many in the game.
46:01It's a lovely ball into Kevin Sharder, who did pretty well.
46:04And that little touch away from Sharder only took it to Henderson.
46:11Lewis Potter was steaming in behind Igor Thiago.
46:14And who knows?
46:17He might have had more of an opportunity to do something with it.
46:19Pedro Poro for Koudes.
46:29Trying to catch Kelleher unawares.
46:31And it wasn't the worst idea from Mohamed Koudes.
46:34They've been very much better away from home this season than they've been at home.
46:4325 points gained so far.
46:4617 of them on the road.
46:49Vivian Keller.
46:50Sharder's flick on to Igor Thiago.
46:55Back into Sharder.
46:56Yarmulik's in a good spot.
46:58Sharder's found him.
46:59Yarmulik.
47:00Big chance.
47:02No kind of contact really from Lewis Potter.
47:06That's a big opportunity.
47:08It's a good run by Yarmulik and a good ball.
47:11And Lewis Potter could not get any kind of clean contact on it.
47:18Lewis Potter.
47:19Now, Igor Thiago running with Romero, who missed the ball and caught the man.
47:26And Andy Madley is given nothing.
47:30Now, that's interesting.
47:41Well, the home fans are not happy.
47:46Romero, it seemed to me, had a big old swing at the ball.
47:49And missed it.
47:52Here's Kudus.
47:55Jao Palinha to Bentancur.
47:58Archie Gray wriggling inside the area.
48:07Collins made a challenge.
48:09Spurs now appealing for something and getting nothing.
48:11And Romero on Igor Thiago again.
48:23Well, Archie Gray thought he'd been fouled here.
48:26Well, you can see why you'd appeal.
48:29Well, here is Romero.
48:32He misses the ball completely.
48:36He catches Igor Thiago and the referee gave nothing at all.
48:42And both of those incidents have been checked and cleared.
48:46Well, you can see why Archie Gray didn't get a penalty, I think, to overturn that on-field decision.
48:55He just may have been stretching things a bit, but I think Romero is very lucky.
49:00Lewis Potter, it's not a bad ball, Romero's header, scuffed by Odobe, collected by Jarmeluk, clipped in by Henderson-Janelt.
49:09Pushed out by Vicario.
49:12Well, Vitaliyanelt was on the end of this.
49:17It's a nice clip ball in by Jordan Henderson.
49:20And it's a good chance, that.
49:26Coyote's cross.
49:28Pedro Porro away.
49:31Well won by Jarmeluk.
49:33Coyote with a little change of feet.
49:35And then a swivel of the hips.
49:38Spencer's lost it, but he really couldn't afford to.
49:40And Igor Thiago misses the target.
49:44And Jed Spence will be the most relieved man in Hounslow.
49:49He's got to deal with that.
49:51Can't lose it there.
49:53And Igor Thiago couldn't find the finish.
50:00Here's Igor Thiago.
50:02Rhys Nelson getting forward.
50:04That's a good challenge by Romero.
50:07He's found Mohamed Koudas.
50:10And Rico Henry has not dealt with that.
50:14Koudas has found Kolo Mouane.
50:17Koudas wants the return.
50:19It's Richarlison.
50:21And Kelleher saves.
50:23What, in the 93rd minute, is probably Tottenham's best chance of the game.
50:28They deserved to beat us 26 days ago at Spurs.
50:31So today was a completely different performance.
50:33We wanted to quicken the tempo in the second half.
50:37I thought we did that as much as we could.
50:40They tried to slow it down.
50:41We dealt with half of the challenge here.
50:43We know they're very strong at home.
50:45We know if you open up too much, they just run counters on you and they're very good in their direct play.
50:49And that we just completely closed down.
50:53They only gave seven shots away in the whole game.
50:55So, very happy with that.
50:57But, of course, we didn't create enough.
50:59I've got to ask you about the Christian Romero challenge on Igor Thiago.
51:02Which, you know, he's taken a mighty swipe.
51:03He's trying to make contact with the ball but made none.
51:06Was he fortunate?
51:08Two games in a row he's been very fortunate not to get red cards for tackles on Thiago.
51:16I don't think it's an easy one for the officials.
51:19I thought the one in the home game was a very easy one.
51:23And I'm always very respectful of the officials and understanding of the job that they have to do.
51:27But, yeah, I thought he was really fortunate.
51:29I think there's two situations.
51:30I think there was that.
51:31There was the 50-50 with Christian Romero and Thiago.
51:34And I think there was the 50-50 penalty on Archie Gray.
51:37I think it's that given that they were not at one turn.
51:39We'll look at both of those decisions shortly.
51:42But the positive for Spurs here, Dion, is that everything defensively is better under Thomas Frank.
51:50More clean sheets already this season than the whole of last season.
51:53And yet there was still some chance of boring, boring Spurs because at the other end it isn't happening.
51:58Yeah, they are playing out from the back.
52:01They're doing well, but anything in the final third, they just cannot get the ball in the back of the net.
52:07Their finishing is quite weak.
52:09They don't believe that they can score.
52:11Those people that are getting into those goal-scoring positions aren't really saying,
52:16I'm going to score this one's caught a weak one as well.
52:19Turn shot here.
52:20Nothing in that at all.
52:21It gets blocked.
52:21Kudos here.
52:23I like Kudos.
52:24I think he's a very good player.
52:25He affects all matches.
52:26But I just don't feel that this is the right time to try a 40-yard, a half-volley angle shot when your team's not playing too well.
52:35But they really do.
52:36Richarlison, for me, he tries so hard sometimes that you can see he's trying too hard in his finishing as well.
52:44Doesn't quite catch that.
52:45Keeper, nice and easy.
52:47This kind of summed up the game here.
52:49Kudos has got nice quick feet.
52:50Can't even strike the ball right with his right foot.
52:53Gets everything wrong.
52:54Summed up the game.
52:55Wasn't a great spectacle.
52:56No, and they were the best chances for Spurs in that game.
53:02And that's where they rank when it comes to their attacking prowess this season.
53:07Still with the decisions then that everybody talks about, both Keith Andrews and Thomas Frank talk about,
53:13do you think Romero's lucky?
53:14I do think he's lucky, but I don't think it was enough to be a red card.
53:18I think at this moment in time he is trying to clear the ball, but he's very, very clumsy.
53:22I think this is a trait of Christian Romero that we've seen over the last few seasons,
53:25is that when he gets himself in this position, he's very clumsy with his tackles.
53:29And yeah, he misses the ball.
53:31He fouls Thiago, but I don't think that was a denial of a goal-scoring opportunity,
53:35as obvious as probably what more people think.
53:38And Dean, I think we're in agreeance that there was nothing to come from Archie Gray driving into the box.
53:43No, not at all.
53:44For me, yeah, he goes down.
53:45There is contact.
53:46Of course there is, but I just think that defenders do what defenders do.
53:49They make sure that that gap gets smaller, that gap gets smaller and smaller and smaller.
53:53And that's exactly how you want defenders to defend.
53:56No gap there in the first place.
53:58Good defending that for me.
54:00OK, so nothing in that?
54:01Nothing in that one at all.
54:02The Romero one, though, Chavez, I would say this.
54:04I think he's very lucky.
54:06OK.
54:07Right, let's just show you the league table.
54:10Manchester City now four points behind leaders.
54:14Arsenal, Liverpool's first 0-0 draw for over two years,
54:17means they miss the chance to pull away from the sides immediately.
54:20Below them, Brentford and Palace, just inside the top half.
54:24Leeds' improved form has taken them seven points clear of the relegation zone.
54:29Tottenham are up to 12th.
54:34Well, before we go, we're going to deal with the news that Enzo Mareska has left Chelsea this afternoon.
54:40Nizar Kinsella covers Chelsea for BBC Sport.
54:45And we will start, Nizar, by trying to understand who made this decision,
54:50because the statement says part of company.
54:52So who drove this, the Chelsea board or Mareska himself?
54:57Right, yeah, chappers.
54:58It's suitably vague, isn't it, the language in the statement?
55:01So I'll try and bring some clarity to it.
55:03It's absolutely right to say that Enzo Mareska, he certainly accelerated it
55:09and his position became untenable because he wasn't really feeling
55:12that he was getting on with the hierarchy at Chelsea Football Club.
55:16So really, it was driven by him.
55:18It was driven in that sort of, you know, way that it was like mid-season.
55:23He was the one who pushed for it to be sort of mid-season.
55:26And Chelsea weren't totally happy with him either.
55:29We must say that because certainly he was under pressure to improve results.
55:33And I think they would have preferred an end-of-season change,
55:35but it's ended up a mid-season change, really, because it became untenable.
55:39There have been suggestions, Nizar, as well, that one of the problems here
55:45was that there were interferences in team selection and substitutions
55:51and that Mareska wasn't having that.
55:55Where are you with that?
55:57Did the Chelsea board feel like they had a right to interfere in those kind of things?
56:03Well, I think let's firstly say what Chelsea is.
56:05The club makes the big decisions.
56:07This is a club with five sporting directors and a very influential owner
56:11who's very hands-on.
56:12So the manager is probably the sixth or seventh most important person at the club.
56:17So that's what it is at Chelsea.
56:18But they say that they're not influencing those decisions in terms of
56:22you've got to pick him in this game to win the game.
56:25It's more medical, that kind of thing.
56:28Like, they weren't happy with how Enzo Mareska was pushing players back.
56:31He'd just come back from injury, maybe playing too many minutes.
56:34So it just shows you that there's a lot of disagreement here.
56:37Now, Enzo Mareska would probably disagree with that as well.
56:40And he'd say he was being pressured to make changes, rotate, things like that.
56:44So those are the sort of stories we're getting out of the camps,
56:48out of the two camps now that have become totally divided.
56:50This ownership will now be moving on to their fifth manager since they took over.
56:56Is there still a belief that this project is being run the right way?
57:01Well, I think Enzo Mareska doesn't believe in it, does he?
57:04And Maurizio Pochettino similarly sort of ended his tenure here,
57:08having not totally agreed with the ownership's direction.
57:10But if you actually talk to people at Chelsea, they would say that they want to win.
57:15They have the youngest squad in the Premier League.
57:17I mean, it was very fitting that Mareska picked the youngest team in the Premier League
57:21this season with his last 11 against Bournemouth.
57:24But they still think they can win, even with that, absolutely.
57:28And they think that they'll get gradually better and better and better.
57:30And they are looking for stability, but they just haven't found it.
57:34The main name in the running to take over is Liam Rossini,
57:38who is within the same football group.
57:42Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
57:43He's definitely the frontrunner to become the next Chelsea manager.
57:48The Strasbourg project is very similar to Chelsea.
57:50So I went over there to France and saw what they're doing.
57:53And they've got the youngest team in the big five leagues.
57:56So it's very similar to Chelsea.
57:58And yeah, he's working very well with the ownership.
58:01He's very highly regarded and things like that.
58:03But of course, he's quite inexperienced.
58:05He's never managed in the Premier League, has he?
58:07So it absolutely would be a big step up if he came to Chelsea to replace Enzo Mureska.
58:13But very quickly, it seems like there's no other people really being mentioned in the running.
58:18Well, Chelsea do say there's others, but it just feels like there's such a firm frontrunner.
58:22And also, it's so difficult to appoint someone mid-season, right?
58:25So it's easier to hire somebody from a club you already own
58:28and give him an opportunity at another club you own, isn't it?
58:31So it kind of makes Liam Rossini the obvious choice.
58:34All right, Nizar.
58:35Thank you very much for that.
58:37Nizar Kinsella, who covers Chelsea for BBC Sport.
58:40Right.
58:40Thank you, Steph.
58:41Thank you, Dion.
58:42After sitting through those four matches, we need a drink.
58:45Dry January lasted less than a day.
58:47Good night.
58:48Welcome to a brand new series of...
