00:13On Thursday, the U.S. State Department said Washington supports Taiwan's efforts to share
00:17the burden of its defense, and while President Lai Qingdeh's pledge to increase military spending,
00:23Lai put forward the record budget in November, aiming to strengthen Taiwan's deterrence and
00:28asymmetric capabilities. But addressing reporters' questions about a similar statement from the
00:33U.S.'s de facto embassy in Taiwan, Opposition Taiwan People's Party Chair Huang Guochang said
00:38defense spending should serve Taiwan's interests first, not the U.S.'s.

01:08He says only a quarter of Lai's proposed package would go toward buying weapons from overseas,
01:14and is now questioning how the rest of the money would be used.
01:17But the defense ministry says Huang's figure is not accurate.
