13:46And so much of the talk ahead of this North London derby
13:49was about those names who weren't there.
13:51And was this going to give Spurs an opportunity?
13:52Well, there was only one name on everyone's lips at the end of it.

13:59But I have to say, the Arsenal team performance was incredible.

14:17But getting back to Eza, I mean, his best performance in an Arsenal shirt.
14:22He showed all aspects of his game and his play.
14:25He's got this wonderful knack of making the game look easy
14:28and finding space so effortlessly.
14:30Here, he doesn't even see Rice till late.
14:32Still manages to find him with that beautiful little flick and creativity.
14:35This is why they brought him in, to unlock defences that sit deep
14:40and put numbers behind.
14:41Talking about the team performance, Timber there.
14:43You need runners when you've got a packed defence.
14:46Timber was exceptional today.
14:47But Zubamendi there is the central defence midfielder.
14:50He's ahead of Eza.
14:51And every time someone runs past him,
14:53he just drops into that little space that's vacated.
14:56Great feat on the edge of the box to skip through there
14:59and get a little bit of luck with the deflection, but still a good finish.
15:02More of the same in the second half.
15:03See how he just drops into the space when Rice penetrates.
15:08And when he gets the ball, it doesn't matter with him right or left foot.
15:11It's elegant.

15:13There's one thing you have to do if you play for Arteta, and that's defend.
15:16They carry nobody.
15:18And if you don't do it, you don't play.
15:20Now they've got the competition for places and squad depth.
15:23And look at this for a turn of pace as well.
15:24I mean, Koudis is no slouch.
15:26And not only does he get back and help his team.
15:30Probably doesn't want this back from the keeper, actually.
15:32But when he gets it, a little bit more composure around the corner.

15:37The fans adore him already.
15:38When he gets in this position again, just patient.

15:47He's the type of player now that Arsenal can rely on.

16:16Let go by Arsenal at 13 years old and then finding his way through Millwall,
16:20QPR, Crystal Palace to come back to the club that he left as a kid
16:24and do what he did in a North London derby today is just extraordinary.

16:30Resilience, self-belief, just complete single-mindedness
16:35and wanting to achieve his goals.
16:37To play for your boyhood team and score in a game of that size
16:41is something that will live with him forever.
16:43And he will not be sleeping tonight, trust me.

16:47The great thing about this now for him, he's got the fans on side.

17:19Okay, on to a slightly drier, kind of less glitzy part of the game today.
17:23Because the second goal Spurs fans would feel maybe a little bit aggrieved by.
17:28It was awarded and was judged not to have contravened the interference rule.
17:33Now, this has been applied inconsistently, some might say, over the last few weeks.
17:37We've seen different examples of where goals have been overturned or goals have been given,
17:41and yet things appear to be similar or the same.
17:43Should we remind ourselves of the rule and the examples that we've had lately, Joe?
17:47And you can tell us why you think this could be cleared up quite simply.
17:51Yeah, last two game weeks it's been front and centre.
17:54No getting away from it.
17:55We see the law there, four different things that you've got to understand when you're looking at an offside,
18:01especially from a goalkeeper's point of view.
18:07Okay, so we've got the first example that we had today.
18:09Abreche Eze, Trossard in an offside position.
18:13Then we had Van Dijk two weeks ago at the Etihad, Roberts in an offside position.
18:17And here we have Murillo and Doy at Anfield yesterday.
18:21Okay, so first example, so Trossard.
18:23So this is the one that I think, this is Vicario's vision.
18:27I think this is preventing an opponent from being able to play the ball by clearly obstructing the line of vision.
18:32As it leaves his foot, Trossard is in Vicario's line of vision, offside in my opinion.

18:44As it leaves Van Dijk's head, he's not obstructing Donnarumma's view.
18:49As we roll it on, Andy Robertson here, look, he's ducking out of the way.

18:56Could be trying to flick it on, make an obvious action which clearly impacts the ability of an opponent to play the ball.

19:13But if we roll it on, at some moment, Ndoy, who's in an offside position,
19:18is preventing an opponent from being able to play the ball by clearly obstructing the line of vision.

19:24In my opinion, you'd have an argument to rule that out.
19:26So for you, it would just be more consistent to say anything, anybody who's obscuring the vision of the goalkeeper in an offside position?

19:37I think that makes it, well, that's what the rules are, but they've obviously not taken them because two of those goals were given.
19:43So it makes it very difficult, and we have these continual conversations, but with VAR, the ability that they've got is to slow it down and pause it like I have there,
19:52and you can point out why the goal should be ruled out.
19:54Yeah, and a lot of Spurs fans will probably even concede that actually, had the goal been ruled out,
20:00they would have gone 1-0 down instead of 2-0 down at half-time, but they were totally overpowered on every area of the pitch today
20:06and would hold their hands up and say that they just didn't have the fight they were looking for in that North London derby.
20:11Well, yeah, the lack of fight, but it's the lack of creativity in the last couple of games, Arsenal and Chelsea at home.
20:16You can see here the XG, top two, lowest in the last two games, and obviously they won at the bottom three out of the worst eight this season.
20:24Yes, you can hide behind Kulisevski, Madison, Solanke not being there, but the players they've got in that squad are struggling,
20:31really struggling to be brave enough to get on the ball, to make things happen.
20:34You could argue only Kudos out of all their front players can hold his head up high a little bit and then say he's created stuff and had to go.
20:43There's a lot of fear in that side, probably too much pragmatism.

20:54The reality is they've got to pick up soon because the level of performances the last couple of games is causing discontent amongst the fans for sure.

21:24Aston Villa didn't register a victory until the end of September, but since then, Unai Emery's side have won eight of ten in all competitions.

32:15There was a technique that you used there.
32:17Describe it if you can.
32:18I call it the Emi Buendia.
32:20He did it, obviously, the last game before the break.
32:23It's something I've been practising on.
32:24Probably not as hard as him.
32:25Maybe not as much as I should.
32:26But once he was off the pitch and I looked around and there was no one else really that practised him,
32:31I thought, why not?
32:32I know I've got it in the locker.
32:33It's just about consistency.
32:34And, yeah, I'm really happy that that one went in.
32:37Yeah, it was fantastic.
32:38But is it the Emi Buendia free kick?
32:41Well, my experience of that technique was Gareth Bale.
32:44And it used to frustrate me when I was at Tottenham of why he was kicking it so softly.
32:49There was so much movement.
32:50And I wasn't able to move because I couldn't pick up the line.
32:54So when I saw that today, I was so, so impressed.
32:56Like I say, that's the Emi Buendia to Morgan Rogers.
32:58But to me, it was the Gareth Bale.
33:00He was telling me to use, almost use your ankle.
33:03So hopefully later in the piece when I show you what he means by that.
33:07But it's quite a confusing technique.
33:08But it's such a special technique if you get it right.
33:14And here we are.
33:15This is versus Bournemouth.
33:16This is Buendia.
33:16And, like, I've got to clear up why this technique is leaving.
33:20Premier League top goalkeepers stood there just watching the ball go in.
33:24It's such, it's so frustrating.
33:25And I know exactly how they feel.
33:27This was today.
33:28This is their 20-yard free kick.
33:29Like, Buendia, I've got the miles per hour up there because these boys are capable of hitting 70, 80-mile-an-hour shots.
33:35And the fans on the side are probably thinking, whip it goalkeeper's side.
33:37Whip it goalkeeper's side.
33:39Here, first ever free kick in the Premier League, by the way.
33:4247 miles an hour.
33:43To have the confidence and step up and do it.
33:46Right, so what I'm going to talk you through is the technique we've known for years.
33:48Almost the David Beckham technique.
33:50We're standing almost two, three yards to the left, ready to approach the ball.
33:54And when you see someone with that technique approaching from two, three yards to the left, as we see it, there's only one style of free kick.
34:01It's the right to left.
34:02If you're a golfer, the draw.
34:04But what we see here with Morgan Rodgers approaching it from straight, that already makes it difficult for Perry.
34:11As he steps up, uses that technique.
34:13I think I've talked about with Gareth Bale.
34:14It almost looks like he's just hit below the ankle.
34:17Usually you want to be using much higher up the foot.
34:20And his technique, he's just looking to softly get it up and over the wall.
34:23It makes it very difficult.
34:25And then leaves Perry stood there.
34:27And I'm going to tell you why.
34:28Here we go.
34:29This is it.
34:29So eight, here we are.
34:31Eight foot ten.
34:32Goalkeeper, the goal's eight foot high.
34:34Ten inches above the bar when it goes over the wall.
34:36And he has no idea of the trajectory, Perry, when he sees it.
34:39So this is the time frame.
34:40He's got to make a decision, move and save it.
34:42And a millisecond later, it's five foot above the goal line.
34:47Unbelievable movement.
34:48Unbelievable dippage, as you would say.
34:51And as we move on to our third example, which is the teller of why he's just stood there.
34:55Like I say, Ellen Road, everyone's looking and going, why has he just stood there?
34:59So as the ball leaves Morgan Rodgers' foot, it just threatens to swerve left.
35:03That right to left that I was talking about earlier.
35:07It leaves his foot and then just dips the other way.
35:10And this is the moment Perry's set for that ball to come towards him.
35:14Calculations in his head.
35:15Try and get his foot moving.
35:16And in the end, he's stuck in the mud.
35:18Can't move.
35:19Morgan Rodgers.
35:20Over to McPhee.
35:21Big high five.
35:22And they absolutely delight because they've given him the confidence to do that.
35:25They've worked on that and they believed he could.
35:27There is something of the sand wedge about it, isn't there, in the kind of trajectory and
35:31how it comes down again.
35:32Do you know what?
35:32I'll tell you this because I've practiced that many times.
35:35It's a very difficult technique and there's not that many players who can do it.
35:38I mean, you need a certain type of posture with your feet.
35:41A certain kind of feet because the flexibility.
35:43Yeah, call it like 10 to 2, 10 past 2, if you like.
35:4610 to 2, sorry.
35:48Rather than, you know, more 12 o'clock feet where you can't open to get the groins.
35:52I know that sounds a bit weird, but I remember.
35:54It was just the 10 past 2 feet that I had in my head.
35:56Yeah, 10 to 2, sorry.
35:58The first time I ever was with England, I was lucky enough to be called over to practice
36:02free kicks with Beckham.
36:04And he had this wonderful flexibility within his legs, his feet, his groins, to be able
36:09to get that amazing whip, which nobody else could quite copy because of the way he set
36:14up.
36:15Physiologically, he was set up ready for it.
36:16Right, let's talk about the second half of Villa.
36:18We've seen this a couple of times where, obviously, you and I, Emery, was itching to get in and
36:22make a few tweaks and a few changes because Leeds had had a really good first half.
36:26Leeds were terrific first half and a lot for them to be pleased about in that respect.
36:31But he brought Marlon on to play high up with Watkins instead of the first half where Rodgers
36:35played as a 10 behind Watkins, Buendia was on the left.
36:38So he brought Marlon on to occupy the two centre halves to stretch the game and try and get
36:42behind Leeds, which they didn't manage in the first half.
36:45What that also did is it left a space for Rodgers to come in when he could off the left
36:49hand side.
36:50And this is how they got the first goal.
36:51It's a brilliant impact substitution.
36:54We know Marlon's quick.
36:55We know he wants to run in behind and we know he's had a couple of good games recently.
36:58He probably feels a little bit disappointed he's not starting with Watkins.
37:01But look, both wanting to run that way.
37:04They didn't.
37:04Watkins was isolated in the first half on his own.
37:07Two centre halves against him.
37:08It was more difficult.
37:10And then when they get out and they beat the press, look, there's the pace.
37:14There's the options.
37:15And all of a sudden, it's game on.
37:17They're finding themselves getting into the Leeds final third more often.
37:21This time it's Watkins with the shot.
37:23It really was a clever bit of management from Emery because he needed to do something.
37:30They were flat.
37:31Leeds were comfortable.
37:32And this is a player who wants to impress.
37:34I love it when subs come on and try and impact the game.
37:36He's beating people.
37:37He's dynamic.
37:38He's making things happen.
37:39This is a great example.
37:40Look, when you play two centre forwards, they're both in between the full back and the centre
37:44half.
37:44Really difficult to play against.
37:48And then the wide men get more space, get more time to come inside and begin there unlucky
37:53with the shot.
37:54And he probably deserved a goal for his efforts in the second half, Marlon.
37:59But he just scuffs this one.
38:00But it was a really good substitution and a small tweak, but a very important one.
38:05I do have to say, though, Leeds second half, even though they went 2-1 down, they really
38:09were resilient.
38:10Came back into the game and were unlucky not to get something out of it.
38:14The attitude on the pitch, the fight that they had today, would seem to see a relationship
38:20between the manager and the players, certainly, that looks good.
38:23But in terms of the fans, there was a lot of disquiet in the crowd.
38:25And a fan actually managed to get himself right in front of the Leeds dugout and was
38:30protesting and got taken away.
38:32There were a lot of noises at the end of the game that seemed to say they may be losing
38:35a bit of faith in Daniel Farker.
38:37Yeah, well, it's another loss and they're on a bad run.
38:40And I think after their recent performances at Brighton away, where they lost heavily
38:44and they lost at Burnley, I think there was a lot of discontent.
38:48That performance today was a good reaction, even though they lost.
38:51They didn't deserve to lose the game over the 90 minutes.
38:53Yeah.
38:54But Leeds are an expectant crowd.
38:56The problem is for Leeds, we talked about Tottenham earlier, Leeds are struggling to
38:59score goals.
39:00They've got a very tough run coming up as well, haven't they?
39:03They lost five in six and home is not the fortress they would have hoped it would be
39:07in the Premier League.
39:08And that's what they've got to come.
39:10No, it's not.
39:10But I've been, you know, I was there at the Tottenham game this year.
39:13They had a really good performance.
39:15They performed well.
39:16They lost the game, which is unfortunate.
39:17Of course it is.
39:18But it's difficult coming into the Premier League.
39:20But I saw a really good performance today.
39:21They put a lot of pressure on.
39:22I mean, Martinez needs to be on his metal towards the end of the game.
39:26That was a good Premier League performance and they were undone by a bit of brilliance.
39:29But there's no doubt about it.
39:31They're up against it.

44:30Because it's not wholly unusual for a team to have a hard time.
44:34Chelsea, after they'd won the league, came back the following season.
44:37And after this stage, 12 games, only had 11 points.
44:41Ended up finishing 10th.
44:43Leicester City, perhaps because that was a slight aberration and an unusual thing, wasn't it, for Leicester to win the league.
44:48You might not be as surprised with their form the following season.

44:54United, Manchester United in 1996-1997.
44:57Only had 19 points, one more than Liverpool at this stage.
44:59And ended up winning the league that year.
45:02Danny, you've already declared that Liverpool are not going to win the league.

45:05I mean, the expectation is higher because of the amount of money invested was huge, even for Liverpool.
45:10Look, Slott's going to take a lot of stick in the next week or two.
45:16And he's going to be asked a lot of questions from the fan base, far and wide, from the media.
45:22The reality is, yes, he is the manager and he has to take some responsibility.
45:25But a lot of the players have to look in the mirror.
45:29Because out of last season's players, I'd say only Sir Bozly, Graven Birch, maybe Robbo when he's come in,
45:36have even got near to the levels of last season.
45:38And that's not good enough.
45:39And that, OK, there's lots of different reasons and theories.
45:43But a lot of it's mentality.
45:45You know, because you've won some and maybe the comfort zone a little bit.
45:48Because physically, they're not at it.
45:50And only one of the new four or five signings, Eka TK, has done well.
45:55So the players have to take some responsibility.
45:58Now, what can Slott do?
46:01He's got to make some huge decisions.
46:04And that means leaving some big players out.
46:06Because back to basics is key.
46:08Defending better.
46:09Working harder.
46:10Being more physical.
46:11Doing the hard yards.
46:12It sounds very basic stuff.
46:14But he's got to pick his most physical 11 who he thinks are going to defend the best for him.
46:18And start getting some points on the board.
46:21Don't be thinking about titles, Champions League, FA Cups.
46:25Next game.
46:25Because the reality is, if he keeps losing games, he won't be in a job.
46:30On the form table, over the last six games, Joe, only Wolves are below Liverpool.
46:37Last night on Match of the Day, Rob Green and Wayne Rooney talked about leadership.
46:41They talked about getting back to basics.
46:44And you've just alluded to the same thing there, Danny.

47:16They've probably hoped a few times they'd be able to paper over through the cracks.
47:19The new players would come good.
47:21They're not.
47:22They've got to step up and they've got to perform over the next couple of weeks.
47:24The balance is wrong somewhere.
47:27You know, there's too many players who look off it.
47:29And the ones who are on it can't compensate for the ones who aren't.
47:33So, he's got to find an XI that is prepared to just be more stable,
47:39be more compact.
47:41If it means putting more defensive players in and upsetting a few egos,
47:44you've got to do it.
47:45PSV at home in the Champions League and West Ham away the next two matches.
47:50Every game at the moment, you know, looks tough, doesn't it, for them?
47:53Yeah, of course.
47:54I think they would have backed themselves at Forrest at home,
47:56the position they've been this season, to win easily.
47:58And they've not.
47:58They've struggled.
47:59So, massive games in the season for them.

48:06which is their biggest at this stage of a Premier League season.
