00:05:22It was just a frenzy of emotions.
00:05:25You hear stories, you know, about people going missing and never found,
00:05:30but when it's someone you know, you just automatically assume they're going to be found.
00:05:37And I had hope that everything would still be all right, you know.
00:05:45I didn't realize how foolish that idea really was.
00:06:05It was after they called off the search that the reality of the situation just came crashing down around us.
00:06:20Just as quickly as it all started, it seemed like everyone just forgot about Carla.

00:06:40That's actually how her and Brian met, at a paranormal convention on campus.

00:06:46They were all part of an amateur paranormal group.
00:06:49They hit it off right away and started dating right away,
00:06:51and it wasn't long before Brian eventually proposed to her.
00:06:54The supernatural was something that always interested both of us,
00:06:59and I guess you could say it's the one thing that brought us together.
00:07:04I knew Carla and Brian mainly on a professional level.
00:07:07My husband and I run Horror News Network, which is a horror website,
00:07:10very similar to what they do, so we would see them at conventions.
00:07:14They were very much liked in the horror community,
00:07:17which was why it was so shocking when she disappeared.
00:07:19Carla was in love with Brian from the start.
00:07:23You could just tell right away.
00:07:24And everyone in the family really seemed to like him.
00:07:29The only problem was Carla's father.
00:07:33He didn't seem to approve of their lifestyle.
00:07:37I knew that her father didn't really approve of it,
00:07:40but I never forced her into anything.
00:07:43While most girls were spending their money on clothes and makeup,
00:07:46Carla was spending her money on EMF detectors and audio equipment.
00:07:51In fact, it was actually Carla who had the idea for the website.
00:07:56It gave her a chance to immerse herself in all of her passions,
00:08:01writing, photography, the paranormal.
00:08:04It was the perfect job for her.
00:08:06I didn't like all that supernatural ghost crap they were into.
00:08:09I especially didn't like them roaming around all these strange and secluded places all by themselves.
00:08:13I was always afraid something like this was going to happen one day.
00:08:17He just doesn't believe in the paranormal and it's something he definitely doesn't want to talk about.
00:08:23No, I don't believe in that nonsense.
00:08:25I think it's a bunch of make-believe and stories people like to tell each other in order to scare each other.
00:08:33And frankly, it's not Christian.
00:08:35The Bible doesn't ever mention ghosts.

00:08:40So you believe in angels, but you don't believe in spirits?
00:08:44I believe in the Holy Spirit.
00:08:47And angels, well, they're not human.
00:08:50They're God's messengers, his way of connecting heaven and earth.
00:08:54And when people die, their soul ascends into heaven.
00:08:58Which would mean there'd be no such thing as ghosts, would there?
00:09:01So tell us about this investigation that you were on.
00:09:12We were investigating a place called the Devil's Well in Connecticut.
00:09:16It's believed by some that the well is actually a gateway or portal to hell.
00:09:23Now, one of our more popular legends is about the Devil's Well.
00:09:27And it has sort of a dark past, which is why there have been a lot of sort of colorful stories associated with it.
00:09:36I think New England in general, due to its location and the history of the area, has quite a bit of paranormal activity.
00:09:43We encouraged our readers to write in to us and suggest places that they think that we should investigate.
00:09:49And one of our readers emailed us about the Devil's Well, and it sounded interesting.
00:09:54So we thought we'd check it out.
00:09:55I have never been to the Devil's Well.
00:09:58I think it's someplace I'd like to check out.
00:10:00I'm a little curious and intrigued by it.
00:10:02The well just seemed like a normal well, I guess.
00:10:07The weirdest thing about it was that it was in the middle of this basement.
00:10:10It just didn't seem like it belonged there, you know?
00:10:13No one knows who actually built the well, but the first recorded information about who actually owned the property
00:10:19relates to a family called Woods.
00:10:22In the early 1700s, they bought the place.
00:10:25It was a mother, a father, and two daughters, Mary and Margaret.
00:10:29There was some kind of an accident.
00:10:31Mary ended up dead at the bottom of the well.
00:10:35Of course, the family claimed that she had just slipped and fallen in.
00:10:38But what was strange is that her sister Margaret said, no, she had not slipped, that Mary had flung herself into the well and committed suicide.
00:10:47I don't consider myself like a religious person, so I don't necessarily believe that it leads to hell.
00:10:54But one thing I can say is there definitely is a strong negative energy in that place.
00:11:01Now, in 1915, a man named Henry Kidder bought the property, and he bought it because he wanted to put up a textile mill, which he did.
00:11:10And it was very successful.
00:11:12Lots of the local people were employed here.
00:11:14But there were strange rumors about his personal life, especially his fascination with the dark arts and the occult.
00:11:22And it didn't help any that he built the mill right on top of the well.
00:11:25And he built a room around the well, very specifically designed.
00:11:31But no one knows why he did that.
00:11:34Ever since then, well, the well was kind of associated with dark doings, shall we say.
00:11:41We got called to that area a lot, claims of Satanists and devil worshippers.
00:11:46Of course, it was the 80s, the whole satanic panic was in full swing.
00:11:51Everything was quiet up there until the 80s when there was some kind of an incident.
00:11:55I never liked getting called to that place.
00:11:59And on this particular night, there was definitely something off.
00:12:07The police were called.
00:12:08There was an altercation, and the police officer was stabbed, and another man was shot.
00:12:14I observed a bunch of people in hooded robes.
00:12:19And there's this naked girl standing in front of them.
00:12:28And I immediately noticed that she had blood on her.
00:12:32I drew my weapon.
00:12:34I ordered everybody to get down.
00:12:35And they turned around.
00:12:36They looked at me.
00:12:37I couldn't see their faces.
00:12:42Either they were wearing masks or their faces were painted.
00:12:46But I could tell from their demeanor, they weren't scared of me.
00:12:51They were pissed.
00:12:52They were angry.
00:12:53I was interrupting whatever they were up to.
00:12:54I didn't see the suspect come up behind me, but I felt the sharp pain in my back.
00:13:03I turned.
00:13:04I realized I had been stabbed.
00:13:07So I started firing my weapon several times.
00:13:12I don't know how many people I hit, but only one guy, one suspect went down.
00:13:18Everybody else fled.
00:13:19They were never found.
00:13:19And as far as what they were doing down there, I don't know.
00:13:25But it scared the hell out of me.
00:13:30And not a day goes by where I don't think about it.
00:13:33And I just always wonder what happened to that poor girl that I had found down there.
00:13:49I've done a lot of investigations, and I've never felt that sort of energy so strongly.

00:16:39It has been nearly two weeks now since we first reported on the disappearance of Carla
00:17:05Marx. Unfortunately, no sign of Marx has been discovered and police have officially called
00:17:11off their search. Resources tell us that the police are now putting their focus on the
00:17:16husband, Brian Marx. It has been confirmed that Marx was officially arrested earlier today
00:17:23in connection with his wife's disappearance. It's unknown at the time what evidence was
00:17:28discovered to warrant the arrest, but if you'll notice behind me, police tape has been put
00:17:34up around the building and they are treating the area like a crime scene. Forensics teams
00:17:39have been busy here all day. We did everything we could think of to find Carla. We sent out
00:17:46search parties. We had dogs search the building in the nearby woods. We drained the well and
00:17:51had climbers go down into it. We even searched a nearby lake just in case, but we found nothing.
00:17:58No trace of Carla. Nothing to even support the theory that she might be lost. That's when we
00:18:05turned our attention to the theory of foul play. Once I was arrested, it was all over from there.
00:18:13People just assumed that if I was arrested that I must have had something to do with Carla's
00:18:18disappearance. They had nothing and they knew it. The town was fed up with the unwanted press and the
00:18:25department was under scrutiny at the time. Now I think the police were hoping if an arrest was made
00:18:31then the media attention would go away and the whole town wanted to forget the whole thing. They
00:18:35wanted everything to go back to normal. So the police were under pressure to make that happen
00:18:41and they arrested my client.
00:18:54I thought I told you everything I know. You just don't want to believe me. Believe you?

00:20:42blame for his wife's disappearance. No one wanted to believe me anymore, and everyone just kept looking
00:20:48at me as if I was hiding something. Of course, they had to cut me loose eventually because they had
00:20:56nothing on me. But by then, the damage was done.
00:21:01It's been a while since we've seen Brian. After he was released, he tried to come and talk to us, but
00:21:07John wouldn't have it. In fact, he went after Brian physically. We haven't seen or heard from him since.
00:21:16Do I think Brian did something to Carla? Honestly, I have to believe that he did.
00:21:23Otherwise, what possible explanation is there? People just don't disappear without someone making
00:21:28them disappear, right? So if you ask me, yes. I think Brian did something to my daughter.
00:21:37John believes that Brian did something to Carla. And even if he doesn't really believe it,
00:21:43he won't let himself think otherwise. And why is that? Because it's too painful any other
00:21:49way. I still have hope that someday my daughter will be found, but it's that hope that hurts
00:21:56the most. Keeps the whole thing fresh in my mind every day. I just don't think John can live
00:22:05like that. I think he has to assume the worst so he can move on.

00:22:50I can't say what happened to Carla. Any theories I may have would be mere speculation.

00:23:20I believe in facts and evidence. In my line of work, it's always people harming other
00:23:26people. Not to mention, I spent days at that location, along with several other detectives
00:23:32and forensic professionals. And none of them reported anything unusual happening to them.
00:23:50I was part of the forensics team on the Carla Marps case. Several days after she disappeared, we were tasked
00:24:02at the job of searching the room she was last seen in for any possible trace evidence.
00:24:08During my investigation in that room, I started to hear these weird, strange sounds. It sounded almost like an animal growling.
