What happens when Republicans turn against a Republican president? Today — it’s Greenland. And this time, Donald Trump is facing resistance from his own party.

In a surprising bipartisan move, Republican lawmakers have joined Democrats to shut down any attempt by President Donald Trump to seize Greenland — a territory governed by Denmark and protected under NATO. Yes… Republicans are helping block Trump.

For weeks, Trump has floated the idea of the United States taking control of Greenland, claiming it’s vital for national security and necessary to counter Russia and China in the Arctic. He’s even suggested the U.S. would get Greenland “the easy way or the hard way.” That rhetoric sent shockwaves through NATO — and Congress.

00:00What happens when Republicans turn against a Republican president?
00:29Today, it's Greenland, and this time Donald Trump is facing resistance from his own party.
00:36In a surprising bipartisan move, Republican lawmakers have joined Democrats to shut down any attempt by President Donald Trump to seize Greenland, a territory governed by Denmark and protected under NATO.
00:51Yes, Republicans are helping block Trump.
00:54For weeks, Trump has floated the idea of the United States taking control of Greenland, claiming it's vital for national security and necessary to counter Russia and China in the Arctic.
01:06He's even suggested the U.S. would get Greenland the easy way or the hard way.
01:11That rhetoric sent shockwaves through NATO and Congress.
01:15Now comes the backlash.
01:18Democratic Senator Gene Shaheen and Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski have introduced the NATO Unity Protection Act, a bill designed to block Trump from using U.S. funds to occupy, annex or seize territory from any NATO ally, including Greenland.
01:35Murkowski didn't hold back, calling the idea of America using force against its allies deeply troubling.
01:42That's a Republican senator openly rejecting Trump's foreign policy vision.
01:47But there is one thing that we should not be doing, one thing that we should not be spending our time doing, and that is an effort, any effort that would seek to annex Greenland, whether it is taking it by force, taking it by coercion, taking it by pressure or threat, or really, in fairness, any related method.
02:11It is not an issue that I would have ever expected to raise here on the floor of the Senate.
02:17In my time here in the Senate over the past two decades, I have immersed myself in all things Arctic.
02:26I have strong relationships with friends across the Arctic and in Greenland specifically.
02:33I've been the co-chair of the Arctic Parliamentarian Conference for years now, and my co-chair is a strong Greenlandic woman who I just spoke with this morning about the situation and the rhetoric that is coming out of Washington, D.C., directed towards her country.
02:57And it doesn't stop there.
02:59Republican Congressman Don Bacon joined House Democrats to introduce the No Funds for NATO Invasion Act, specifically aimed at stopping any military move against Greenland.
03:11That's two chambers of Congress and members of Trump's own party saying not happening.
03:16Greenland is governed by Denmark, a NATO ally that has fought alongside U.S. troops in past wars.
03:23Any attempt to take Greenland by force would violate NATO commitments and international law, something even Trump-aligned officials now admit they're not planning to do.
03:34So while Trump talks tough about Greenland, Republicans are quietly drawing a red line, this isn't Democrats versus Republicans anymore, it's Congress versus the President.
03:46And the message is clear, when it comes to NATO, Trump may be standing alone.
