Transcript
00:00Ann Lee was the founder of the Shakers, the largest utopian society in America.
00:07She created this space that didn't really exist for anybody.
00:13Ann Lee was from a poor background, the daughter of a blacksmith working in the cotton mills in Manchester.
00:23Mona and I wanted every image not to feel like something you've seen before.
00:29We started researching a lot of religious paintings.
00:32We talked a lot about contrast in light and finding a lot of darkness, sort of evoking these works.
00:38It was not easy because we're motivating everything by candlelight or moonlight.
00:44But I wanted the image to feel like a painting literally at times,
00:49which is why we ended up using a traditional matte painter.
00:54I cannot preach without being harassed.
00:57They will kill me, eventually.
01:02Ann Lee emigrated to America with a small group of followers, creating a space where people could live free of these societal norms.
01:11She believed this was the way to help them find peace.
01:15People of this community are well-wishers to the country and we will do all the good to the country that we were able to do.
01:22For the production design.
01:25We really wanted to silo the different worlds into their own tonal, chromatic and textural spaces.
01:31Manchester wanted to be murky and muddy.
01:35You have lots of maximalism because you have cramped, crowded conditions.
01:41You have lots of different color tones that your eye is drawn towards.
01:44But once you're in New York, we want the whole film to open up wide.
01:47Be not discouraged. God has not sent us to this land in bed.
01:51Sam Bader had to build this community and he dreamt up an incredible village.
01:56I mean we built every little detail.
02:01It had to look unimpeachably Shaker.
02:03We did as much research as we could.
02:05We really looked at many different witnesses.
02:08Their statements.
02:09The pencil drawings of the community.
02:11The Shakers were completely self-reliant.
02:14Made everything that they could possibly need.
02:17These incredible objects that the Shakers made.
02:21We had to honor that.
02:23The beds, the chairs, the apple core.
02:26So many of their inventions still exist today.
02:29So a lot of the things we were fortunate to get to use.
02:34Oh!
02:35Mona and I would go out and shoot what the frames were going to be in the locations.
02:39And then we would print those out like on Polaroids.
02:42And I'd put them up on the wall.
02:44And Ghosh would then start putting fabric underneath that.
02:46Sam would then come and say I'm going to be painting this wall this.
02:48We wanted to keep some kind of continuity.
02:51So that's why it was reflected in the costumes as well.
02:55So much of these costumes were produced.
02:57Which is very, very difficult to do in our budget.
02:59Ghosh is so artful and so specific.
03:03If you were ever to see a sleeve, it is all just beautifully hand stitched.
03:07She was dyeing things with natural dyes.
03:10To really take you into this period in American history.
03:16Every department was just locked in.
03:19Ann Lee said, you know, work each day as if it was your last day on earth.
03:24Just striving for perfection.
03:27So we all just worked tirelessly.
03:30To really bring Ann Lee's world to life.
03:33And there appeared a great wonder in heaven.
03:39A woman clothed with the sun.
03:42And the moon under her feet.
