India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak said the team would need to revise its ODI batting template after the T20 World Cup in March, especially in light of the new rule that brings in a second ball after the 34th over. As per the change in playing conditions, bowling teams have to pick any one of the two balls to continue bowling from overs 35-50.
00:00It's been pretty good to be very honest. It's last nearly a year now. So far it's been very good.
00:25Obviously it's challenging but all in all can't really complain. It's been very good.
00:32How special is it for you and Ravindra to be a part of the India dressing room while playing at home?
00:43And where do you see Ravindra's ODI future from here from now on? What sort of a series is in this?
00:54If you don't like football, I'm not sure how it is. I'll just take whatever they want.
01:01Roshi and Ravindra, do you have any questions in the space of time when it comes to ODI?
01:07See, one thing, obviously it's a home ground, the first question that you ask. It's a lot of memories and you have a lot of dreams when you are playing or when you are coaching your own state as well, which I have been through.
01:22And coming with an Indian team. Obviously I have done it before but that wasn't the full time thing that time.
01:29So it's a great thing. Obviously for Ravindra, he has already played here. So it's great for him to be in Rajkot as well.
01:36Lot of support, obviously. And if I am very honest, I don't think I am anyone to answer about any player's future.
01:47I don't think I should be talking anything on that but I will still tell you that if you ask about Ravindra, he is fit, he is performing and for anyone as long as they are performing and they are enjoying the game, any player would want to play and do well for India and do well for the team.
02:06So apart from that, I don't really know what to answer.
02:13Kooj, can you tell us a little bit about what sort of options are you trying to identify in the middle orders because you've got Washi is obviously missing out.
02:23Ravindra can back to 5, you can back at 7, you've got Nitesh who is on the bench.
02:27So what are the options that the team is looking at to get out of forming a stable middle order?
02:37See, last series obviously Subman and Sreyas wasn't available. So Rutu and Cheswal got an opportunity, both got 100.
02:48So that's a great sign, particularly for me, for a betting line-up that we have a backup and whoever comes in, they perform.
02:57And we all know that literally if we put out another team also, they will be equally good.
03:02So that's one thing. Another thing is, I don't think them also playing last series was trying anything.
03:12It was just the two guys wasn't available, they played and they performed. And now, them two are fit and back, so they are playing.
03:19So I think, honestly, they'll have to wait for their opportunity and always healthy competition is a good sign.
03:27Reddy is waiting, obviously, because Washi got injured, Badony has been included.
03:34So let's, it depends, see the wicket and what the team management decides to put out tomorrow.
03:43Coach, a lot has been discussed and said about the relevance of the UDM combat.
03:49The context of the series given that there is a T20 World Cup starting just within less than a month's time.
03:55When you assess the series, there are two big stalwarts of the game you are playing.
03:59There is obviously a competition and there is a World Cup which is just about 20 or 21 months away.
04:04So what are your goals, what are your, what are these things that you want to achieve in these series,
04:08which are very sparsely organized in the sense that they are not regular in, I mean, not much of ODI.
04:17Say again, I didn't get exactly what you…
04:19I mean, what sort of goals do you keep for the ODI setup when it comes to ODI matches?
04:24A lot of ODI matches are not being played, ODI.
04:29We have played some, obviously.
04:31And whenever we play, because it's still a huge difference between invite ball T20 and ODI.
04:38So the goals, I mean, I don't know, just, I would say, just see the wicket.
04:43Roughly we know what's the par score on each and every venue, whether it's in India or it's outside.
04:49How our better stop orders can get adjusted to that, how partnerships, playing big innings.
04:58Those kind of things are the goal for ODI because 50-0 is a long time.
05:03More or less every game is going over 300, particularly India.
05:08So definitely we see more 300-plus score runs.
05:11And then you're chasing that as well.
05:13So there are a lot of challenges when we play ODI.
05:16And after T20 World Cup, I think there will definitely be more ODIs.
05:20So we'll have to just, for a betting department, obviously, we'll have to try and set up one template.
05:28How we play after this new rule, 34 overs, we'll only have one bowl.
05:33So up to 42 overs is the same, what before, because used to have 25 overs anyway.
05:39But after 42 overs, that bowl will be old.
05:42So eight more overs we have to bet.
05:44All that we plan and discuss and we keep going depending on wicket, how bowl will get rough.
05:50So a lot of things we discuss and we'll just, most of the time, I think our team is, the boys are so talented and they execute the plans.
05:59Obviously, it's a game and there are games which you lose.
06:03So that's part of the game.
06:04But more or less, I think what I've seen in my one year, whatever we plan, we normally execute.
06:16Coach, you talked about the matting technique with the older ball now.
06:21But has that kind of changed your perception towards power hitting in the back end?
06:27That it cannot be the same as it was maybe six months ago.
06:32Maybe the passports will have to be lesser than what they used to be.
06:37Say from the 38th over to the 50th over.
06:40That acceleration may not happen.
06:42Has that been a piece of work?
06:44I think the acceleration would happen, but the last eight overs, bowl will be older.
06:50When we were having two bowls, it was 25 overs each.
06:54Now 34 overs.
06:55So 17th over after you change the bowl, so eight more overs.
06:59And then that is.
07:01But it's new and we do discuss about it.
07:05And eventually, it's not only India.
07:08Looking ahead for a World Cup, I think every team will have to have a template
07:12about how they'll go about it if it is affecting so much.
07:16If that bowl is affecting so much.
07:18Then obviously there will be plans.
07:20How you go power play.
07:21Then how you go up to 30, 34 overs or 40 overs.
07:25And then.
07:26So it will be.
07:27Everybody will try and set their own template according to their own strength.
07:31And we obviously definitely have the plans what we need to do.
07:35Does that include bowling options as well?
07:39Bowling options?
07:40Does that affect the bowling options as well?
07:42The older bowl?
07:43The older bowl obviously.
07:44People will plan accordingly.
07:45No?
07:46Because that bowl gets old depending if the rough surface it may reverse.
07:50It gets little more softer.
07:52If it's due again, there is another challenge.
07:54So that obviously varies from venue to venue.
07:57But yes, there will be plans for bowling as well.
08:01So.
08:02Hello Coach.
08:03Ayush Baloney has been drafted in the squad in place of Washington.
08:08What exactly can you just point out about in the current scheme of things, his abilities
08:14that he brings to the table and how he can not expect his talent to do for this?
08:19I know there is a short sign, but still how is your team management doing at it?
08:24See, he has been playing.
08:25He has been performing.
08:26He has played some India matches also one dayers and he has performed.
08:31And particularly, obviously, it's selectors who pick the team.
08:35But for any common man, when Washington is out, you can't.
08:40Normally, no team would go with only five bowlers.
08:43Like say, for example, last game, if we had only five bowlers and Washington got injured
08:48on fourth, fifth over, then who will bowl those overs?
08:51So, every team would have sixth bowling option.
08:55Sometimes, if it's an all-rounder like Washington, then equally good bowler.
09:00Sometime, it might be more of a better who can bowl.
09:04But if required, somebody should be able to bowl four, five overs or three, four overs,
09:08whatever requires.
09:09So, that's probably, I'm thinking that would be the reason.
09:12And his squad runs couple of fifties in India, he can bowl.
09:17He has been performing in IPL also in wide bowl cricket.
09:20So, good luck to him.
09:22Sipan Chomey, Rohit and Virat, they are playing only one format.
09:29And there are long pauses between the matches.
09:32So, they are, of course, in very good form.
09:36As a batting coach and part of the team management, how are you actually dealing with the situation
09:41so that they know about our team's requirements or alignment with their plans or communication?
09:48Anything that you need to serve?
09:49See, both of them are so senior and so experienced.
09:56They definitely make plans.
09:59They want to practice at all the venues.
10:02If they feel they need to, they'll go a couple of days in advance.
10:06And they practice because they've both also been such an outstanding players for India.
10:11They know now they are playing one format.
10:13And I'm sure they are thinking that that one format, they want India to win everywhere when they are there.
10:20And they are performing.
10:21So, planning-wise and all, they are someone who are brilliant.
10:26They know what they need to do.
10:28They know what their body needs.
10:30Not only betting, even the fitness, whatever requirements they have.
10:35So, they are thorough professionals.
10:37So, I don't think they need to be saying they need to do this or that.
10:45In fact, the amount of experience they have, they can share a lot of ideas with other players.
10:51And they do discuss.
10:53They discuss with Gautam about ODI formats, about the matches we have, our plans going to South Africa.
11:01So, that's…
11:02Most of the time, I'm there and if I'm listening, they definitely share the experience.
11:08And I always see them talking.
11:10Obviously, in social media, you see a lot of things, which I try to avoid seeing.
11:15But what I see, there are a lot of positives.
11:18Yes.
11:19Yes.
11:26Shira Chauai, one more question on Ayush Badoni.
11:28Ayush Badoni has come in a sort of like replacement for Washington Sundar.
11:35So, does he straight away go into the playing element?
11:38Because other than Gravindra Jadeja, you are talking about that sixth bowling option.
11:43And other than Gravindra Jadeja, you won't have a speed bowling or longer.
11:48And also, another thing is that, I mean, the Vijay Hazara trophy was not among runs.
11:54I mean, 16 runs in three innings, five matches.
11:56So, and not very big results.
11:58Can that be confidence-wise?
11:59Can that be a factor playing at the highest level?
12:03Yes.
12:04Yes.
12:05Yes.
12:06I mean, no matter who is the amount of cricket they play, I don't think for any betters,
12:09two, three innings would make any difference.
12:11And it shouldn't.
12:12Because if you are scoring 300+, or you are trying to chase 300+, people are going aggressive.
12:20They will have couple of innings here and there.
12:22If we start worrying about that, then people have to start playing defensive, which we can't afford.
12:27So, I wouldn't worry about that.
12:29I don't think the team will be obviously decided tonight.
12:34But all-rounder-wise, he is there.
12:36Obviously, Nitis Reddy is in the team.
12:38So, two all-rounders we have.
12:39So, not only him.
12:40So, then it depends how.
12:42I am not even going to wicket yet.
12:43But obviously, the captain and team management will discuss and decide that tonight.
